http://www.kipar.org/piratical-resources/graphics/maps/caribmap.jpg

This is an OOC interest thread for an RP I wanted to design about the Golden Age of Pirates. It will take place in the Caribbeans during the time period of 1660 to about 1680, and will be (almost) completely open. No one is taking control of nations: you're going to be one person. Be a pirate, a privateer, a peaceful trader, or even an Admiral of a Royal Navy.
_____

Character Creation
Obviously, provide a name, age, and description/picture of your character. Also include what ship they sail on (or, if applicable, what ship they are in command of), they're rank (if necessary), and nationality. You can be any real-world nationality you pretty much want, but know that the 4 major nations in the Caribbean at this time are the Spanish, English, French, and the Netherlands. If you sail as a soldier or privateer, you sail under one of those flags.

Also in your bio, include any weapons you carry (pistols, cutlasses, etc.), and a brief history of your character (why they came to the Caribbean, what they seek to get out of travelling there, etc.)
_____

Ship Creation
If you are a Captain or above in rank, you command a ship. You can post a ship profile, but it must be a type of ship seen in the Caribbean at this time. Common vessels are sloops, brigantines, fluyts, merchant vessels, pinnances, brigs, barques, frigates, and galleons. Note that your ship type will usually define what you are. Privateers usually sail in well-outiftted sloops and brigs, traders prefer the fluyts, merchant vessels, and barques, and the larger Royal Navy ships include the Frigate and the Galleon. Of course, you can still be a pirate who sails in a Dutch Fluyt, but note that this ship is slow and big: it's more likely a pirate target than a buccaneer vessel.

For your ship, include its crew, any designs on the sails, number of guns, and any "modifications" (pirate ships were always made of stolen equipment: a ship could be an English Brig with French guns and Spanish cotton sails).
_____

Distinguishing between Pirates and Privateers

Pirate: A sailor who abides by no governmental law. Usually former naval sailors themselves, so they are well trained in war and sailing. Pirates are not paid wages: they agree to take a share of plunder at the end of their voyage. They are ruthless, murderous, and treacherous. They usually steal their own ship, so they cannot expect great equipment until they strike it rich. If they are known, they are usually not welcome in national ports.

Privateer: independent ship and crew paid by a nation to sink enemy ships. Privateers are issued "Letters of Marque," which grant the ship and its crew permission to capture enemy vessels. Privateers usually have better equipment than pirates, and they are welcome in friendly ports.

I would like to point out that, seeing as we're in the 1680s, that uniform is not, in fact, old. It's from 100 years in the future.

And seeing as we're getting tons of English types, I'll go Spanish...

OOC: Yea, 1660s-1680s, sorry bout that, but that time period is considered the "Golden Age" of piracy. In the 1800s, the pirates and privateers would have disappeared: there's no use for them since England would be the dominant power anyway.

Bio:

Name: Ciro Marinaio

Alias: Il Italiano

Age: 24

Nationality: Italian

Flag Sailing Under: Spain

Rank: Captain

Occupation: Privateer

Description: At 5'7", Ciro is rather tall for his Italian ancestry. He has very dark brown, curly hair, cut so that it hangs an inch above his shoulders, and blue eyes, a Sicilian trait inherited from his mother. A small tuft of hair has grown from his chin, but he has no other facial hair. His normal attire is a green bandana covering his hair, a plain white shirt, light brown trousers, and a regular-brown colored pair of naval boots. In battle, Ciro is known to put on a hardened leather vest for slight protection.

Weaponry (training and items): Ciro carries a cutlass, a popular weapon in Italy and a memento of his father. Made of Damascus steel, a forging process known in the Middle East, the metal of the blade seems to have a watery appearance, fitting for a sailor. The handle is protected by a basket hilt.

Ciro also carries one pistol upon boarding, and has been known to use the weapon as a club in some cases. He has also been trained in the use of the rapier, though not as extensively as Royal naval captains.

History: Born in Genoa, Ciro was the son of a trader who sold his wares throughout the Mediterranean. He learned the ways of the sailor from his father and often spent time down at the docks and naval yards, helping in various odd-jobs with the men who worked there. When he was 16, his father left for a voyage to Barcelona. Along the way, a group of French corsairs, abandoning their "holy" mission and instead becoming greedy murderers, boarded his ship and killed him. Upon learning of this, Ciro left his mother when he turned 18 and tavelled to Greece to join a Corsair ship, in the hopes that he may capture French shipping to revenge his father. He participated in several succesful raids, his anger fueling his attacks, and the French along the Mediterranean trade routes soon learned to fear the Greek pirates. Finally, however, a French warship hunted down the corsair and destroyed it near Sardinia. From there, the young Italian travelled to Spain to seek passage to the New World, believing there was nothing left for him in Europe. Based on his experience in naval combat, Holy Spain gave him training in navigation, dueling, and ship-to-ship combat. Then, at 23, he set sail for the Caribbean, and was told to seek a letter of marque from the governor of Havana. This Ciro obtained, and from there he learned that France and Spain were currently at war. Smiling inside, he took up the name of Il Italiano, and raided the lower half of the Lesser Antilles and the French ports on Hispaniola for a year. . .

Ship: In accordance with being a privateer, Ciro wanted a ship that was both fast and powerful. For this reason, he asked for a Brig, and this he recieved.

Name: Furia Giusta
Cargo Space: 70 tons
Guns: 24
Crew: 180

(running out of time, sorry for no post in long time, will add more for ship later)
