Climate: The climate is similar to Australia, but with larger tropical rain forests in the north, a Mediterranean climate along the east and west coasts, and a more temperate climate in the south. Two major mountain chains dominate the island, creating a large desert between the two chains. To the east of the Spine Mountains, the terrain slopes into a vast network of rolling hills and plains suitable for ranching and agriculture. The region west of the Spine and the Federation mountains is similar in climate to California, ranging from forests to desert and a thin coastal plain. It rarely snows, except in the mountains, though rain is quite common, especially in the tropical north.
Terrain: Two major mountain chains, the Spine and Federation chains. The eastern third of the country is dominated by good growing land and plains with excellent harbors and beaches. The southern part of the nation has a rocky coastline in places but several major harbors, especially in Port Wellington Bay to the east, and the Gulf of Bahia and New Albor Bay to the west. The northern region of rainforests and temperate forests has been transformed by the New Albor economy, but many forests remain in their natural state where only the very hardy and extremely foolish dwell.

History:
The Federation of New Albor was in times past the Kingdom of Albor amid several other principalities and fiefdoms, including the Duchy of Wallenheim, the Principality of Compiegne, the Commonwealth of Bahia, and the Protectorate of the Suron. For decades, the spectre of war and unrest dominated the small governments, but hostilities never reached a level that would force another group to concede. While not ethnically diverse or even politically diverse, the divide tended to be economics and freedoms. The Kingdom of Albor was a nominally free constitutional monarchy until the rise of Edwin Albor XX. His reign was one of corruption and misrule, though it did lead to the formation of the Globex corporation, who wisely moved much of their operations to Compiegne later during Edwin’s rule. King Edwin suspended parliament and fell deeper into madness. This forced the other principalities to unite in common cause to oppose the Kingdom of Albor’s mad ruler. Unfortunately, Albor’s military remained under direct control of the madman and was by far the most powerful military on the island. Still, the alliance of principalities decided it necessary to remove the King and attacked Albor. The result was a decade long war that utterly annihilated all sides involved and nearly destroyed the island as a whole. The situation was made worse when King Edwin ordered the massacre of thousands of prisoners from Bahia as well as his desire to use chemical weapons against the alliance. In the end, Edwin was assassinated by his Chancellor, Rhys Allwyn, who then ultimately surrendered control of Albor to what was left of the alliance. Alas, millions lay dead, including many of the nobility and rulers of the alliance of nations. Allwyn, using the influence of the corporations, built political bridges by proposing an equal Federation to unite the whole island under one auspice. A new constitution was drawn up allowing Albor City to remain the seat of government but with greatly reduced power. Allwyn, seen as a national hero for deposing the king, was elected in a landslide by what remained of the populace, and he set out to build a nation out of the ashes of many.

Military:
Note: Some of the naming conventions imply a monarchy, even some of the government posts. This has more to do with the history and tradition of Albor and the provinces that became the Federation of New Albor.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff:
The office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff control military policy in New Albor, answerable to the Prime Minister, who is also commander-in-chief. Still, the Prime Minister defers to the Joint Chiefs and lets the military nominally conduct military policy. The Chiefs are appointed by the Defense Minister, who is not always the Chief of Staff. In the case of the present, it is not so, though the Defense Minister represents the Army on the council. Matters involving the nuclear arsenal are decided by the Joint Chiefs, the Defense Minister, and ultimately the Prime Minister, who has final authorization regarding the release of nuclear weapons.

Nicely done. Might you be interested in importing some Lower Columbian petroleum products in exchange for some Alborian beef? We could also exchange automobiles, possibly building factories in each other's nations.

Official Communique from the Federation of New Albor Ministry of Domestic Affairs:

To: Lower Columbia Trade Ministers:
RE: Import/Export Trade Issues

The Federation of New Albor is pleased to exchange some of our beef exports for Lower Columbia's petroleum products and we think an exchange of factories (we building our autos in your country and vice versa) is a splendid idea.

Warmest Regards,
Sir Anthony Williams
Minister of Domestic Affairs
