History of the Empire:
The History of the Empire begins in 1506, when Kiev broke away from Russia. It was said that Kiev was jealous of Novogrod power. It too wanted to be at the head of an Empire. As expected, the Russian Czar and Nobles weren't very keen on this. What followed was a small war between the Ukraine, which was under the control of Kiev, and Novogrod, which was the military capitol of the Russian Empire. The war, though small, ravaged much of the border country between the Ukraine and the Russian Empire. The war ended after 3 years of conflict in Ukrainian Victory. They had won after they began to starve the Russians, who lived in a cold land and can't grow as much food as the Ukraine. This war was known as the War of Kievan Betrayal to the Russians and the War of Ukrainian Dominance in the Ukraine.
Throughout the rest of the 1500s, Kiev consolodated it's power. It expanded southwards until it reached the Black Sea. It then turned east towards the Crimean Peninsula. There the Tartars, were in power. The Tartars are descendents of the Mongol Horde. The war that was fought with them was less of a war and more of a Slaughter. Thousands of Tartars were killed, the Duke in Kiev said that the Tartars are remants of the evil Mongols that conquered Russia and the Ukraine three centuries ago. With the Eastern Flank of the "Empire" firmly checked, the Ukrainians turned west. In regional terms, the Western Ukraine was under the control of various lords and ladys. Most of them held very little power seperately, but together they were quite strong.
In 1597, the Duke of Kiev, began a campaign to subjugate the western Ukrainian Lords. At first resistance was limited, and many lords sweared fealty to the Duke. All was going well. Then in the spring of 1598, resistance actually began to fight back. The Militias and Mercenaries of the remaining lords banded together to try and throw out the Ukrainian Invaders. Most of battles were minor skirmishes compared to real battles. There was only one battle of any real note. The Battle of L'viv, was noted to be most bloody battle of the entire campaign. 700 Ukrainian Soldiers died in that battle, while only 250 died for the lords. Even with a victory at L'viv, the lords time was short. Within two months of the battle the rest of lords either swore fealty to the Duke of Kiev or were dead. The Ukraine now stretched from Uzhhorod, on it's western border, to Luhans'k, on it's eastern border.
As the new century dawned, so did a new Duke of Kiev. This one was less inclinded to conquer vast stretches of land like his predecessors, but he did have the so called itch to fight like his ancestors. This itch was also assisted by the idea of making a name amongst the many great ancestors he had. He wanted to be known for something, not just a footnote in history. After much deliberation on an outdated map, the Duke set his sights on the nearby Duchy of Moldavia. Nothing major happened there. It was just a small little area, renowned only for it's farming. It's militia was poor. Nothing would stop the Duke from conquest. In truth thats what happened. The Duke's forces crushed Moldavia's Militia. Within a month, the Duchy was under Ukrainian Control.
As the years turned and 1621 turned into 1622 The Ukraine set it's sights once again on war. Further southwest of Moldavia lied the rich lands of Romania. Unlike the western Ukrainian Lords. The Romanian Lords were used to fighting. They fought amongst themselve, against the Muslims and other heathens. This was going to be no cakewalk like the operations in Moldavia. The Duke of Kiev thought much of this over. After days of thought, he came up with a devious plan. He would turn the Romanian Lords against each other. It wouldn't be hard, seeing as many of them were of different faiths. All the Duke would have to do would be to lay the blame for something on one of the Catholic Lords and then the Orthodox Lords would fight him. It was a cunning plan, but one that needed the utmost care and work. It would be 6 years before the plan went into motion. No one knows what the Catholics were blamed for, or why the Orthodox fought them. All we do know is that the Orthodox Lords, with the help of the Kievan Commonwealth crushed the Catholic Lords. When the rest of the Lords were weakened and tired from the fighting, the Kievans swooped in and conquered Romania for themselves. The fighting was still extremely hard for the Ukrainians. This war would end up being the most bloody for The Ukraine until the 1700s.
