Maraqueans Vote Unanimously to Eliminate Presidency

TURKAN (PRESIDENTIAL CAPITAL), MARAQUE - In an absolutely astounding vote today the people decided to oust the head of government and 2nd most powerful position in the Democractic Constitutional Monarchy, returning the once Democratic Constitutional Monarchy to a wholly Constitutional Monarchy with an acting Congress.

The final vote showed 59% in support of the legislation, 32% in support of of the legislation plus eliminating the Imperial Congress as well, and 9% didn't support either one.

"Once again the people have spoken, and the country will return to a constitutional monarchy as it once was nearly two centuries ago. Clearly I wish the outgoing president luck in the future." The Emperor had to say.

Nonetheless, there were massive protests outside the Imperial Palace today in Super City; 3.2 million protesters crowded the streets and blocked traffic to force the Emperor to return power, but the Emperor is constitutionally restricted to veto legislation that the people have voted in favor of.

"As much as the people had the right to eliminate the office of president, they also have the right to protest, and protest they will." The Emperor said inside the Palace.

At the Presidential Palace in Turkan supporters of Cristiano Tavoularis were seen crying at the steps, and the ex-President was seen comforting them.

The day was young, and the sun had barely climbed over the grey peaks of Krasnamoya's rolling mountains; by that time, the Premier was up and about, silently scanning the latest issue of Правда. He had already been briefed on the latest domestic news. Police captain gunned down in the metro, ceremony to be held next Tuesday. Plane forced to land outside of Bosrek due to engine troubles. Nothing of concern going on within the government.

Now, however, the international section was of more importance to him. One article caught his eye, "Maraqueans Vote Unanimously to Eliminate Presidency."

"How odd." He reached over and picked his cup of tea, taking a sip as he read over the simple yet profound piece. After finishing both the story and his tea, he decided to compose a letter to the Emporer,

Your Majesty,

Although I tirelessly work to promote the ideals of democracy, in my home and abroad, the nation of Krasnamoya and myself respect the decision of your congress. We are happy to see you've retained the representative portion of a constitutional monarchy, at the very least. I understand this letter seems frivolous, but the actions that have taken place in your country have caught my eye. Perhaps in the future our country's may open diplomatic ties, hopefully over positive circumstances; I would hardly call this the start of round-table talks.

May good fortune bless your nation, and best regards,
Premier Sergei Nikolaevich

Promptly he called for an aide to address and send the letter, before returning to the newspaper.

Premier Sergei Nikolaevich,

The people of our empire have the constitutional right to request a vote upon anything they wish. As such, the required amount of signatures - 1,000,000,000 - were attained to put this piece of legislation to vote. Obviously our people felt strongly about holding a traditional (in the sense of historically our country has always had a monarch) form of government, hence deciding that the President was to be terminated, as well as unnecessary, as I hold as much, if not more power than the President constitutionally was allowed.

Nonetheless, I would like to propose formal diplomatic ties between our two nations, and wish to establish an embassy exchange if this is all possible.

Signed,
Emperor Jovan S. Norris

From: East Lithuania Transmission Station.

Sir,
We heard about your unfortunate termination, and while we in East Lithuania have not had an election in the nations history, we feel horrible that your position was terminated like this. Dictator Scharfetter kindly asks that, if youy do not find any other political position in your nation, we would like to offer a high position in East Lithuania.

From, and with all best wishes with you,
Dictator Scharfetter

Dictator Scharfetter,

It is with much honour that I served and protected my nation, and although my nation's people have decided by a majority vote to terminate my governance as their head of government, I hold no grudges against them.

In this regard I have been offered many different positions from corporate Maraque, to even a position in the Emperor's government, as well as many different offers from other nations. I have not decided whether I want to pursue a career in politics or join the private sector. In this, I shall get back to you, in the meantime I thank you for your words of good wishes.

Signed,
Former President, Cristiano Tavoularis

Premier Scoldwather reached his hand down into his pants, and cupped his testicals, smiling as his manhood hardened.

He wrapped a hand around it, stroking lightly, and looking down at the morning paper. "Hmm... President thrown out? Sounds like as good a reason for a party as any to me!"

One hand in his pants, and one on the keyboard, he quickly typed up a letter.

My Dearest Emperor,

I have learned of your news! Rockin' man, or something like that. Whatever the kids are saying.

I am writing this as an invitation, and a congrats(or is it 'z'? Which are the hipsters using?).

I would like to invite you to a totally 'rockin' party. It's gonna' be crazy. There will be a keg.

This is a wife-swapping party, so be sure to bring your wife and get ready for a great time!

See you later dude,

Premier Charles Scoldwather, First of his Name, of the Scoldwather House.

He finished off with an "UNG!" and called his secretary in to clean up the mess.

Premier Charles Scoldwather,

I thank you for the congratuations. However, I won't be able to attend this party, as much as the temptation of there being a keg begs me to do so.

I also lack a wife.

Emperor Jovan S. Norris

Sergei was typing away at the keyboard of the dark grey IBM Selectric on his large desk, finishing up a proposal to the Bureau of Transportation when a lanky, aging man stepped inside the doorway of the room, knocking on the open door with a strong looking but bony hand, a letter in his other. His receding hair was slicked back, still a dark, healthy black, and a warm smile was on his face.

The Premier looked up, returning the smile. "Vasili, what can I do for you?" Taking that as an invitation to enter, Vasili traversed the gap in the carpet between him and the large desk quickly with his long legs, and handed the letter to the Premier. "What's this? Maraque has responded already?" As he read, Vasili summarised the letter, tucking his hands in his pockets. "They're looking to exchange embassies. Since our 'embassy row' is so empty, I think we should go for it."

Returning the letter, Sergei nodded enthusiastically. "I'll give you the honour of replying. We welcome them with open arms."

On behalf of the Krasnamoyan people and government, we happily accept your proposal to tie the diplomatic knot, so to speak, and will be proud to house your embassy on our soil. With our 'embassy row' so vacant, we can only hope you will be the first of many to begin relations with Krasnamoya, and that this fact will not discourage you from doing so.

We look forward to many years of friendship, cooperation, trade, and mutual understanding.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Government of Kahanistan notes with serious concern the popular abolition of the elected Head of Government. We see the latest developments as a potential threat to continued democracy in the Secular Empire.

However, as of now the political and civil liberties in Maraque seem to be still respected. We will continue to watch events closely.

Dear Margaret Delray,

We appreciate the concern that you have, but rest assured the Emperor shall be, and always will be, a benevolent ruler and shall uphold the strong political and civil liberties that Maraqueans have always had, and will continue to have, until the end of time.

The position of President was installed in a time when the people thought - again through popular vote - that it was a necessary position due to the fact that at the time there was no one to represent their interests, then years afterwards a tricameral congress was installed which fulfilled this need rather nicely, so the people thought the President was rather useless now that their concerns were now being voiced with a democratically elected congress which held more power than the President himself.

The constitution allows for the President to be terminated through a national popular vote, but not the Congress. In the very constitution it states that no vote of any kind can terminate the congress for any reason, not even an amendment. Democracy will always be a part of our culture and our nation; I, myself was elected and my successor shall be as well.

Signed,
Emperor Jovan S. Norris
