Republica Argentina
Recent History:
In the late 1870s, General Julio Argentino Roca led an expedition into the Pampas region to "extinguish, subdue or expel" all Indians there and spread the rule of Argentina. This ended successfully, for the Argentinians, and brought much territory under their control. The ensuing revolution in 1880 centralized Argentina and established Buenos Aires as the capital. Roca became president in the 1880s and instituted many reforms including minimizing the role of the Catholic Church in Argentina. Another revolution in 1890 forced the President Miguel Juarez Celman to resign after an economic regression worsened by the corruption in Celman’s government. The current President, since 1892 is Luis Saenz Pena, though his reign has been marred by several radical uprisings.
