A Leap Into The Galaxy (FT intro)

Captain Zhao Jie Si paced across the silvery-grey metallic floor of his sleek, new starship, FNS Explorer, grinning broadly in pride. As he stepped over to the side of the ship, Captain Zhao peered out the thick glass window, still not quite believing that he and his hand-picked crew had been chosen for this particular assignment. Glancing out into the universe, lit up by billions of stars, he reflected on the enormity of his task.

Almost eight hundred years ago, the people of Earth had developed the most basic space technology, marking the beginning of a new era for humans. Not more than one-hundred fifty years after that, the United Federation of Earth had established a fledgling colony on its Moon, Luna. By 2300 AD, it had created the vastest interplanetary empire ever in existence, consisting of scores of planets, systems, and quadrants. However, all of this was not to last.

During an attempt to colonize a planet believed to be uninhabited, the Earthlings had unwittingly awakened a strange race of technologically elite, physically superior bug-like race. Almost immediately, the expedition force was sent packing, fleeing for their lives. Earth’s military forces retreated continuously, as these aliens conquered one planet after the other, completely unchallenged. Eventually, contingents of Earth Space Forces began to react to the attacks, always losing, battles generally lasting only a matter of minutes. At one point, a captured officer, tortured to the point of losing sanity, revealed the hidden location of Earth of to the aliens.
Upon learning of the planned annihilation of the planet, representatives of the Earth General Assembly devised a plan, whereby the Earth Space Forces would prepare for a last stand against the aliens, while a mass civilian emigration to an undisclosed, recently discovered planet. In only a few days, the small vanguard of the alien military had broken through the weak human lines and proceeded to commit mass genocide of the human race. Out of Earth’s populations of 8 billion, only several hundred thousand had been able to escape and found a new human home-planet, Falcaunia. Out of fear that the aliens would detect them by seeing their spacecraft, the people of Falcaunia destroyed all of their space-related technology.

Within the past thirty-or-so years, however, the Falcaunian civilization has amassed huge amounts of technology and craft for space. The knowledge destroyed by their ancestors has been restored and Falcaunia has created a small space navy for the defense of the home-planet.

FNS Explorer, christened only a week ago, is the first in a line of long-distance travel vessels that Falcaunian military contractors have designed. Its mission, under Captain Zhao and his civilian complement, Senator Boris Sergeiov, is to locate and engage in diplomacy with foreign nations and beings.

OOC: Asfaltum is open for any contact with another power. (Asfaltum is of human breed, and a basically defensive kingdom of small/middle size, whose well-built military space forces consist of 400 ships, minus recognisance ships.) We look forward to any diplomatic contact.

IC: The sleek Asfaltic recognisance ship jumped out of slip-stream. Sensors made automatic sweeps, and soon uncovered an inhabited planet. A number of ships peacefully floated around it. "What the Heck!" exclaimed ship-commander John Lukas, captain of the recognisance ship, as he stared at the screen. "Well, what do you know..." Few recognisance ships had the luck to run right into another life form like this... or the unluck... that depended on what race the planet was inhabited by.

His ship, the HMS Falcon, was actually a (dark green) military scout vessel, but for the moment it was acting as a last-minute replacement for a civilian recognisance ship that was undergoing repair. Thus, when it entered the sytem, it did not have any form of cloaking activated and so was clearly visible on sensors. "Well, at least they don't look like meat-eating insectoids with a preference for human flesh..." John joked with his crew. "Their ships look quite... OK, ...compared to some that I have seen..."
"Your orders, sir?" asked a crewman. "Er, everybody at battle stations, prepare to take us right back where we came from, as soon as they show any hostility... and, well, let's just wait for them to hail us. In the meantime, continue scanning the surroundings and the planet."
"Yes, sir!"

“Sir,” a crewman piped up aboard the Explorer, “there appears to be some sort of ship on the radar, a little bit of a distance from us.”
“Very good,” nodded the Captain, his thick Beijing-Chinese accent turning the two words into phrase which sounded more like vur gooh. “Are they military or civilian crafts?”
“By the looks of it, Captain, it could either be a light military vessel or a heavily armored civilian one.”
Receiving this information, the Captain turned to two of his aides. “Lieutenant Alanson, go alert the Senator, he’ll want to make contact personally, as soon as possible. Petty Officer Rashid, send them a communication. Tell them that we mean in peace, we’d like to open meet with them if possible.” As his two aides went off to perform their designated tasks, in a louder tone, he addressed the entire crew. “We don’t know if we’ll have to fight. Prepare for battle, it could be necessary.”

With the rising population in Mythrandir, surveyors and engineers were looking for other suitable planets to begin colonizing. It was rare to find a planet with an oxygen level tolerable enough for humans so they had settled for looking for planets suitable enough to terrafarm. Atmospheric probes were sent into a system that seemed relatively close and their surprise was astounding to learn of a planet much like their own. So now, several months later a research vessel (http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j289/Mythrandir_NS/ewar2.jpg)was prepared with surveyors, miners, geologists, and other engineers. Extra military forces were brought along as well for precaution incase the natives proved dangerous and Lady Murasaki, head of the diplomatic division, was brought along as well incase their was intelligent life below.

The sleek grey ship drifted through the turbulance of the warp while crew members were going over an appropriate plan for exploring the planet. Unfortunatly only an atmospheric probe had been sent in and had not taken enough time to scan for any civilizations. The only information garnered from the scan was surface layout and the atmosphere. Now two dwarves, a man, and an elf stood around a metallic table with a holographic projector showing the topography of the planet. The chief engineer seemed to be leading the discussion as he went over the layout and highlighting important areas. Key areas he discussed were highlighted in red. "I figure this would be the best landing spot for a shuttle. It's out in the open and a smooth enough surface while allowing us access to any areas with a short shuttle ride. Lady Murasaki will be coming along in case we run into any civilizations. As far as we know, there is nothing there that is space faring capable."

An elf woman was looking at what could possibly be different rock fissures before looking up. "It seems we've also acquired a few dwarf battallions from Thrandur before we left. Do you really think it necessary?"

"Lass, ye never know when ye'll need me and my kin. I'd hate te see that pritty face of yers be knawed on by some alien."

While the conversations continued, the ship exited warp in its typical showy fashion. White hot energy swirled around until a tentacle reached in and pulled the ship out, spewing it forth into space. A call came over the intercomm for Lady Murasaki to report to the bridge. The bridge was only a short walk and elevator ride away. A pressurized door slid open and Murasaki walked out onto the bridge to greet the Captain. "M'Lady, I believe you should see this. When we exited warp, we came across several other ships in the sector. Either there was a civilization here when the probe came through and just didn't pick up any ships, or the others are here to colonize as well. If so, we may be in for a fight. We haven't gotten close enough yet to scan the planet surface for civilizations. What do you want to do?"

Murasaki walked over to one of the glass screens at a crewman's station. Images from afar were pulled in close and magnified to give an appropriate view. "Make a short jump. This doesn't look like a gathering preparing for colonizing. Their ships are too small. Much smaller than our own. I believe we have a first contact situation."

"I guess we'll have to break the news to our surveyors. The dwarves won't be happy."

Her painted red lips pulled back in a pleasant smile. "I imagine they won't be pleased but it shouldn't be a problem. For now just get me a message link to those ships."

"Of course m'Lady."

This is Lady Murasaki, head of the diplomatic division of Mythrandir, onboard the research vessel Mythril. Our mission here has changed slightly and we wish to meet with you in person.

Outer Rim - Milky Way

The Imperial Star Destroyer Subjugator filtered through the empty cosmos, her titanic design and ominous figure bellowed against the immortality of the heavens. Her crews diligently worked, persevered for the glory of the emperor and the preservation of peace and order for countless souls. Here was the precipice on which they stood, defending their home from any untoward or advanced invasions against those how defied the will or harmony.

On board captain Tylis was overseeing the daily operations of his vessel, communications reports, intelligence briefings and now, a first contact scenario. The empire always relished such, opportunities.

"Unknown craft coming into sensor range." The shout rang from port to starboard forcing those within the bowels of the vessel to spurn to duty stations. Tylis moved towards the operations pit, preferring a more hands on experience with his crew.

"Commscan, details please." Tylis said oddly unconcerned.

"Electronic signature is small captain, power output limited. I would advise only minimal precautions."

"Commodore stand down from first alert, have fighters and gunnery crews remain on stand by." The orders filtered through the structure. "And send a traditional greeting and first contact packet."

The Asfaltic ship detected all three messages, and the captain responded.
"Tell them that we are ready to meet with them, and that they can send us docking coordinates, or landing coordinates, if they wish."
"As for the other messages... Well, that's just typical... everybody discovers the same planet at the same time... in a few moments we'll have an entire intergalactic zoo..." he said ironically. "Send the following message to the Star Destroyer:
This is the HMS Falcon of the Asfaltic armed forces. We are on a peacefull exploration voyage, and have made first contact with the inhabitants of a newly discovered planet, in case you didn't notice. Any other questions? The last sentence was added with some annoyance.
"It's not like this planet is in Imperial territory, they always have to be so bloody "Ubermensch". Notify our home-base about these recent happenings, and tell them to prepare to assist us with two Gunships, and possibly some other ships."

Probe 11467-BXN/BPP(935). No, it was best to stop there with the probe's identification. Simple devices, built to seek out and contact new civilizations - they contained three things. A basic transponder, giving out sets of numeric data, to prove its intelligence, and a Truespace beacon. And, of course, a basic scanner.

The two together then gave a signal to the New Realm exploration and diplomatic craft. The idea, of course, was to incorporate new planets, and the like, into the New Realm, or form lasting diplomatic relations with them, at the very least. Of course, the New Realm itself was well-hidden, and, at present, was not to be revealed.

It moved closer in. A series of emergency calculations were run - Spacefaring vessels, it appeared. Data was sent back through Truespace, ships residing there processing it, and waiting for their orders, as the results were sent to their operant controllers. One conclusion was reached. The New Realm would, evidently, have to step warily here.

This is the HMS Falcon of the Asfaltic armed forces. We are on a peacefull exploration voyage, and have made first contact with the inhabitants of a newly discovered planet, in case you didn't notice. Any other questions?

Tylis surveyed the communications transcript once it had been passed through several translator algorithms. “They seem to be rather upset at our appearance Commodore.”

“Most people are.” The young officer replied with a glint in his eye. “We have detected another smaller vessel on sensors captain, low power emissions and size. I would say that they are the new race we should be contacting.”

“I don’t see this race in our records either.” Tylis added obviously referring to the transcript. “I also see they’ve dispatched a communications packet, have we cracked it yet?”

“It’s going to take the protocol droids a little time sir, the races in the milky way are slightly barbaric when it comes to language, a little too simple for our droids to compute really.” The good captain moved towards the holo display.

“Commscan get me everything you have on that planet, I want it compared with our previous scans. A race doesn’t just emerge overnight. Meanwhile dispatch two communication envoys.”

Imperial Transmission to Asfaltic envoy – We are pleased that your intentions are peaceful and we hope that this opportunity can lead to open negotiations and a more formal first contact between our two peoples. We had recently conducted a scan of this system and found no presence of civilisation, naturally we are curious as to how such apparent advancement occurred.

Upon our meeting with this new race we hope to begin fruitful discourse.

Captain Tylis of the Imperial Star Destroyer Subjugator out.

Imperial Communications to Unknown Race (Falcaunia) – Greetings from the Obsidian throne! We bid warm welcome and good will from the Star Destroyer Subjugator and her crew. May we be the first to open our arms in diplomatic friendship and discourse to further mutual and beneficial relations between our peoples. If, you have translated this transmission please respond, we look forward to developing a mutual relationship between our peoples.

Jaris whistled. "That's a Star Destroyer out there!", he said.

His crewmate, the rest of the bridge crew aboard the Curious, looked at him curiously, as befitted the ship's name. Her name was Meryina. There were seven other crewmembers, although none of them were operant metapsychics. And, of course, one of the enigmatic Chiiyen were aboard. With their obsession with what they termed 'games', and their near-terminal innocence and gullibility, they were almost a liability aboard a ship such as this.

Meryina chuckled. "The Curious could outgun a Star Destroyer, Jaris. You know that."

The Curious was one of three diplomatic ships, otherwise dedicated to the war. Officially, they were to contact other races. They also served as quick-response to the outer edges of the Realm, which had proved useful more than once.

He looked at her. "This is an Imperial Star Destroyer, from what the scans have shown us. Ineffably different from those.. others."

"Others?"

"You know... uhhh... what was that little delightful empire with Star Destroyers? Some sort of numeric code, wasn't it?"

"Ah, yes. I know the ones you're talking about. But the point is moot. The Curious should be able to equal a Star Destroyer!"

Jaris took a deep breath. "Those Star Destroyers were merely.. imitiations, if I say so myself. Make no mistake, Meryina. Although our ship could, perhaps, outfight, or at least outrun one of those Star Destroyers.. this one is nothing like those. Let me make an analogy. If I had a radio, and I gave it to a man with no electronic components to imitate - he could probably make a fair imitation of the shell, but..."

Meryina looked at him irritably. "Just tell me the status quo. I don't need a lesson in ship design about the Empire. We're at war with the Union, if you'd care to take a moment to remember that. And we're here for the purpose of garnering aid towards that end."

Jaris changed over to mindspeech - vocal chords and mental ones worked equally well, from time to time.

Jaris: <Meryina, that ship could reduce this one into nothing more than rubble in short order, I'm afraid. That's really it.>
Meryina: <WHAT?! But it's a...>
Jaris: <Yes, I know of your prejudices. Most nations churn them out wholesale, and tend to do rather badly at it, I'm afraid. This Star Destroyer, however.. yes. I advise we tread rather lightly, perhaps moreso than usual, not possessing a big stick.>
Meryina: <Youdiplomacydo? Me?>
Jaris: <I will, younotsweet. Arrogant. *laughter*>
Meryina: <Heyfuckyou!>
Jaris: <Shutup! Dropping out of Truespace in 5...>

The mental conversation ceased, and the ship suddenly materialised, a reasonably safe distance, from the Star Destroyer. Scans flooded in, and Meryina shuddered. "I.. see what you mean. Yes, let's power down the main guns. It's not like they'd do any good, in any case."

A message was sent, compiled from mindspeech to the ship's computer, and into a few data packets. The Imperials could understand standard transmissions, sofar as he knew. It's not like their protocols differed from those of the majority of the galaxy.

Greetings. We represent the New Realm, and are currently tasked with initiating diplomatic contact with new and arising civilizations. As such, we would merely like to inform you that this diplomatic vessel has no weaponry armed, and has no intent to threaten your vessel at this time, or in the future.

Greetings. On behalf of the New Realm, we greet you! We are an exploratory and diplomatic ship, and wish to open contact with your nation!

"Are there any more ships, Jaris?"

"I.. think there's one. But it's hardly registering as a threat. No, we know that Star Destroyer doesn't belong to this new starfaring civilization. We can't be sure about the other ship. We'll just wait. If it seems to be another ship of the new race, we'll ignore it. If not, we'll hail it."

He sighed, sat back, and raised a hand, a snack flying into it, prodded by his psychokinetic force. He looked at the caffeinated gas, something that was easily metabolized by the New Realm brand of humans. He leant back further, and shook the bottle - and it exploded in his face, gas condensing on his face, and spraying his shirt with the sticky coffee-gas.

Meryina: <Haha! Don't be such a showoff with your PK!>

He cursed at her, and tossed the bottle aside. Now he'd have to go get cleaned up.. and he knew he had little enough time before someone would want to speak with him..

“Captain, we’re receiving communications from the ship,” squeaked the miniature man, who was monitoring the Asfaltic ship. “They say they’d like to meet with us, shall I give them docking co-ordinates?”
“That’ll be just fine,” announced Senator Segeiov authoritatively, as he strode into the controls cabin of the Explorer. After receiving Captain Zhao’s nod of assent, the little man began to type up a reply to the Asfaltic communication, requesting that they meet aboard the ship.

Several seconds later, a woman seated next to her own monitor noticed several other blips enter into her radar screen. “Captain Zhao, I’ve got two objects on my screen, coming in from different directions. One’s obviously a ship, I’m not sure what the other is… We’re receiving a transmission, they’re saying ‘This is the Imperial Star Destroyer Subjugator, state your purpose here whether friend or foe.”
“Commander Meier,” ordered the boisterous Sergeiov, “respond immediately. Tell them that we come in peace, we’re looking for...”
“They’ve sent another transmission, take a look at this, Senator.”

The Senator and Captain both walked briskly up to the woman’s station and gazed at her monitor as the signals appeared on it, in some sort of foreign communication, and watched and waited a good ten minutes as the strange symbols were modified into moderately sense-making Falcaunian sentences, with the Falcaunian-Roman alphabet. “Sir, they’re some sort of an aristocracy…” trailed off the woman, with a slight tone of disappointment. Like many Falcaunians, she valued democracy extremely highly.

“Good observation, Meier,” stated Captain Zhao sarcastically. “Send them a nice, peace-loving, cuddly message about how we’d like to be good friends too.”
The woman nodded curtly, slightly offended by her Captain’s rebuke of her and followed her task through.

“Another transmission, Sir, from the Mythril, a ship from some place called Mythrandir, they wanna meet with us.”
This mission is already turning into one great damn success, thought Captain Zhao and, as he looked at the huge smile planted on Boris Sergeiov’s face, he could tell that the politician was thinking along the same lines.
“Alright,” said the Senator, turning to Zhao he continued, “You meet with the Mythrandir delegate and I’ll take the other meeting. You,” he commanded the woman, Meier, “Send them communication, we’d like to meet soon, as well.”

The following message was sent:

Greetings!
This is Captain John Lukas, of the HMS Falcon, recognisance ship of the Asfaltum military. We have observed the activity in this area, and have come to the conclusion that all ships are more or less foreign to each other. So, I suggest that everybody should send an envoy to our ship, where we will all meet and discuss different matters. That way, everybody meets everybody.

Another tap of a few buttons, and the message was sent.

Well, it's certainly the best of neutral ground. As it stands, the rest of us are either capital ships or planets, and, as much as I'd love to go and visit the new planet we've seen, we don't deal all that well with heavier gravity, such as Earth has. Although we do have one request. If you're running artifical gravity on your ship, could you lower it to approximately 0.7 gees?

The Subjugator hovered steadily in the cosmos, engines low and weapons invariably inactive. The Galactic Empire had no qualms with war in this place and time, though perhaps in her home Galaxy this first contact scenario would have gone another way…

Tylis sat in his command chair meditating on the last rather pressing orders received from the Imperial Palace. His gloved fingers rolled along the arm rests while his eyes stared into the magnified ship beyond. “Focus in on the port quarter, see if you can catch a glimpse inside.”

“Rodger Rodger.” The battledroid responded characteristically. The Falcaunian ship grew suddenly, her sleek yet bulky design stretched the holo-emitters to their maximum range.

“See this Commodore.” Tylis’s hand pointed towards the general design. “This is a race that is in fear, yet still demonstrates an unquestionable curiosity.” The commodore stared blankly at the design, another so called Thrawn he thought with an inward sigh. So many imperial officers had turned to artwork for revelation on their foes, yet it had never truly worked out for anyone except, the Grand Admiral.

“If I may be so bold captain.” Commodore Netter dared. “Perhaps we should leave our first summaries until we have met them face to face?”

“A traditionalist commodore, I respect that.” Tylis curled a smile. “Yes, we can leave our impressions until we learn more. Have they agreed to a first contact yet?”

“Yes.” Netter handed over a data pad. “I would advise we send a protocol droid and the political advisor? The palace has clearly reinforced its desire for us to remain out of policy decisions.”

“Yes the palace……..” Tylis faltered. “Send a quick transcript of the ships log and our intentions to the anchorage. Have them relay it to Coruscant.. I suppose the Emperor will want to be informed of this.” Netter nodded his agreement. “Very well, alert Inquisitor Malorus that he is to report to the main hanger bay and brief him on the situation.” Netter turned informally towards the hyperlift “Commscan, relay the following communications.”

Communication to New Realm vessel ~ We thank you for your consideration and prompt communication of your intentions. I would like to take this opportunity to offer our warm regards in friendship, and state that our purpose here though unintentional are peaceful in their entirety.

From the vast hanger bay of the Imperial Star Destroyer, Inquisitor Malorus ascended the ramp to the Lambada class shuttle, his flowing crimson robes gently bellowing in the coolant exhaust. Only a few moments later, the pronged wings had extended, and craft was on her way to begin first contact.

Yet another ship entered the system - or rather three. Ji-Tan, captain of the mining barge Prosperity, had come to this system in the hope of mining the asteroids until his hull was jammed with minerals. His friends were flying escort duty in assault frigates - Jack Black in his Ishkur, and White Terror in his Harpy.

When they discovered a number of ships in the system, Ji-Tan decided that stealth might be a better option. They entered an asteroid belt, and began mining.

The shuttle slid out, and Meryina stood aboard it, plugged into the metapsychic-enhancement brainboard. With a gentle nudge, she moved the shuttle along, slowly bringing it towards the Falcon, the engines disabled entirely. Although using PK to move a ship was generally not done - after all, the engines were there for a reason, trying to dock with another ship was much more easily done when you were in control of the ship as you were with your own body.

The shuttle moved easily towards the Falcon, docking within it, the airlock preparing to open. A message came out from the shuttle, radioed directly into the Falcon's sensors - wherever they assumed they might be.

The shuttle door rattled open, and Meryina walked out, her clothing rearranging itself on her body, smoothing out, and looking very.. neat. A simple silver lifesuit, covering her entire body, which uncovered her face as the environment was deemed to be safe - lifesuits were not all that effective for a long time, but they also doubled as diplomatic clothing, easily changing to other colours and shapes, unlike EVA suits.

The first thing anyone would notice about New Realm humans was that they were short. In a universe where nutrition saw the average man at six feet, the four-and-a-half feet New Realm humans were tiny by comparison. Then again, where a normal six-foot person might weigh a hundred and ten kilograms, she only weighed a third of that, and that was, perhaps, a generous estimate.

Of course, she made up for it through sheer.. presence. Walking daintily out into the ship, her hair spun itself into intricate braids, and, seemingly undecided, gathered itself up in a bun above her head. And then it fell down around her face, silver-translucent strands arrayed around her face artfully, not hiding her face, but accentuating it.

She followed the droid, quickly meeting with the three men, and the single woman. Bowing her head gracefully, she spoke. "On behalf of the New Realm, and the First Magnate Exaionae, I am here to enter diplomatic discourse with all here. "

OOC: You're planning on coming directly to the Explorer, not the conference on the Asfaltan ship, right?

Irritation lay at the forefront of Inquisitor Malorus's mind. The Navy, he assumed would be dealing with such a minor first contact. He was a political officer a representative of the Galactic Empire and voice of the Emperor beloved by all. He was a holy instrument in a Galaxy of sin: and now, as his shuttle approached the explorer all he could do was clasp his hands.

Small, the Explorer was completely dwarfed by the Subjugator, Malorus couldn't help but feel smug as his shuttle passed through the grav shields and entered into the compressed airlock of the landing bay. The pincered wings folded and the ramp descended; the entrance of which was obscured by vast jets of Hyperdrive coolant.

"Very well, lets begin shall we?" Malorus said passively. "Accompany me pilot, we shall meet our hosts." Emerging through the hazy cloud of white exhaust, Malorums robes trailed behind him as he made his way to greet this new people.
