The Emperor's Yacht

Saint Thomas was a beautiful island, year round. It was small too, only 31.24 mi². The largest city on the island was Charlotte Amalie, a small city with a deep-water port that was the cruise ship capital of the Caribbean Sea. However, on this early and warm November day, the port was bustling with activity. It was a celebratory day and a lot of high officials were present in one section of the port, a section already sealed off by police and military personnel. Today was the official launching of the Emperor's yacht, a Sonne class design, that was built by the Layartebian Defense Corporation. Two examples had been built and this was the first one, which was going to be for just the Caribbean Sea. The other one had yet to be placed and it was still undergoing initial sea trials. This one, the first boat, was ready for service. The Emperor had authorized §87,355,317.75 for the construction of the two yachts, which would serve the head of government and head of state even after his demise, he was credited as saying.

Military and police presence at the peir was definitely strong and armed guards were under orders to arrest and detain anyone found trying to break into the pier. If they were armed, they were to be shot on sight. With terrorist actions against the Empire rising, the Emperor could not be too careful. At least three hundred people were seated along the dock, with the ship in the background. The Emperor was going to accept the yacht, give a short speech, and take a one day cruise before flying back to Layarteb City. He had business to attend to and he was scheduled to take a one week vacation on the yacht in May, his first ever vacation, in more than twenty-six years of rule. The yachts would be to entertain guests, primarily leaders of other states throughout the world. There were rumors that the Cottish King and his new bride might take a week vacation on the yacht and the Emperor was thinking about inviting Premier Zhao as well.

The yacht was beautiful, white and luxurious, sitting in the bright blue water of Charlotte Amalie. Seated with the remainder of the guests, the Emperor looked over his brochure of the vessel. It was just a hair under 282 feet long, 43.24 feet wide, and drafted 15.32 feet. Weighing in at 1,350 tons, the beautiful boat could move as fast as 20 knots and was powered by a pair of 3,000 horsepower motors. It had a 6,500 nautical mile range and, aside from its staff of 10 naval sailors, it could hold up to 36 guests, comfortably. For short term affairs, such as parties, the yacht could accomidate up to 85 individuals throughout itself. It was luxurious, with lavish bedrooms, a recreational room, a conference room, and a small command center. The command center was a classified venture as were the real capabilities of the yacht. It could sprint up to 24 knots and it had four heavy machine guns concealed throughout its hull, all of them 12.7 x 99mm, hard-hitting M50A1s. There were four MANPAD launchers on hand and the yacht could have a single MH-100A Explorer land on it for short periods of time. For longer periods of time, the weight of the helicopter could not exceed 5,000 pounds. At all times, the yacht would be shadowed by two surface and one subsurface vessel. The submarine would be a Loke class, moving near it at a deep depth, just above the bottom of the sea. The two surface vessels would be light patrol corvettes or light cutters, all of them armed. If it was absolutely necessary, the yacht could be under the cover of fighters and bombers within minutes and it was more than adept at detection and countermeasures as well.

When the christening was completed, the Emperor stood up at the podium and waved to the cameras and cheering audience. "Ladies and gentlemen. Distinguished guests and honorable colleagues. Thank you. This yacht is more than a beautiful work of art. It is a symbol that the Empire is as committed to peace as it is to its own safety and security. The Caribbean Sea is an oasis of peace and prosperity. Nowhere else in the world do millions upon millions of people come to vacation in complete and utter tranquility. The Caribbean Sea is, therefore, the most fitting place for this beautiful yacht. Not only will it serve me but it shall serve those who come after me and it is my hope that in one hundred years time, someone stands here, just as I have, under the same conditions, and rechristens this vessel on its 100th year anniversary. Thank you." The Emperor smiled and waived and boarded the yacht with several guests, including the elegant Dr. Rachel Wilson.
