Errikan Senatorial Election: Derchton

ENN Election Coverage:
Senatorial Elections in the Errikan Province of Derchton
As the end term of Derchan Senator William Robsen neared, he made it clear that he would not run for reelection due to health reasons. This comes as a shock to many People’s Democrats, who had relied on Robsen as their main voice in the upper senate and now see that what little power they have managed to hold may be in jeopardy. Robsen, age 93, had been in the upper senate for six consecutive terms, and defined Derchton’s position as the only securely People’s Democratic Province of the Empire.

As the shock of this news passed, both the People’s Democrats and the National Republicans scrambled to secure the seat that all had really assumed to be taken. They are not alone in this race, as several less well known parties have also seen their chance to be catapulted to the national stage.

Here is a quick summary of the major candidates and their major platforms:

Frank H. Johnson (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Errikland/NS/Errikans-Others/frank_johnson.png), National Republican
A charismatic and generally well liked candidate, he has served as mayor of the second largest city in the region for five years. He is strongly supportive of most National Republican platforms, especially in the case of his support of the Emperor’s policies. He supports:
-Economic Freedoms
-Increased military spending
-Expansionism
-Lower taxes
-Creation of Derchton Valley Protected Parkland
-Strict Immigration Control
-Making Homosexuality a Capital Crime

Philip K. Morey (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Errikland/NS/Errikans-Others/philip_morey.png), People’s Democrat
A leading Derchan politician, he is well known for being one of the few Derchan war heroes from the civil war. He was one of the leaders in the Robsen Administration, known for particular radical opposition to nearly all of the Emperor’s policies. He supports:
-Government recognition and support of labor unions
-Decreased Military Spending
-Military Isolationism
-Increased Economic Foreign Aid
-Inclusion of Christians and Jews in property tax
-Islamic suffrage
-Loose Immigration Control
-Limitations on Capital Punishment

Robert “Bobby” Charleston (http://www.maj.com/gallery/Errikland/NS/Errikans-Others/robert_charleston.png), Derchton First
A friendly and charming man, he is actually a major sheep owner and agriculturalist, this campaign being his first venture into government. He is a strong supporter of the rights of each province, and believes that the central government has no place in interfering with provincial affairs, making himself the natural choice for this small party. He supports:
-Strong tariffs on all imports into the province
-Minor and short term government subsides for the private sector
-Removal of all National restrictions on intra-provincial relations
-Removal of laws regarding recreational drug use

Laurie P. Seinfeld, Universal Women’s Party
A well known radical in the world of civil rights, she took control of the National Women’s Party five years ago, and has since campaigned in many different elections.
After taking the choice of a severe fine and leaving Hessenburg and never returning over a severe fine and prison sentence, she has settled in Derchton just in time to sign up for the election. She supports:
-Legalized abortions
-Legalized lesbian marriages
-Increased rights of women in employment
-Decreased rights of men in employment
-Removal of male suffrage
-Removal of immigration restrictions

Absam A. Hassim, Independent (Islamic Union)
An Islamic migrant and one of the many refugees in Derchton, his family lost their great wealth in the Errikan civil war. He has since become one of the leaders of the Islamic suffrage movement. His victory is seen as a long shot, being that none of his 124 fellow Muslims in Errikland can vote and that no one else knows who he is. Even if he were to win, he would not be allowed to take office due to the fact that he is not a citizen. He supports:
-Islamic Suffrage
-Loose Immigration control regarding Islamic nations
-Increased Economic foreign aid regarding Islamic nations
-Inclusion of Christians and Jews in property tax
-Exclusion of Muslims in all taxes
-Removal of women’s suffrage
-Making homosexuality and adultery capital crimes

ENN will continue to bring up to date coverage on events as they unfold.

Here are some numbers concerning Derchton:

Total Population: 34,118,452 people, 20,471,071 voters

Ethnicity:
Errikan: 78%
Tarki: 12%
Other: 10%

Religious Affiliation:
Christian: 68%
Jewish: 10%
Atheist: 11%
Other: 11%

Vote in Previous Provincial Election:
NR(at that time NCL): 34%
PD: 62%
DF: 2%
Other: 2%

OOC: This election will end on Christmas Eve (a little over a month from now). All nations that I am not ignoring are allowed to vote (that currently means everyone).

I thought of this and wrote most of it in early october, but forgot about it until last weekend. The main parties being Republicans and Democrats is accidental. Yes, the National Republicans have the same name as the party of Henry Clay(before the Whigs), but no, they do not have the same policies.

I will add pictures of the cantidates shortly.

Relevant Information:

Derchton is an anomaly of Errikland. One of the major centers of Socialist forces during the civil war, the city of Derchton was spared outright destruction by General Victor due to his respect for Franz Kertech, an inventor and civic leader, who had invented the Kertech line of weaponry. Thus they found themselves the sole remaining Socialist population center once the war was over.
The Commander-in-Chief of Nationalist Forces (who became Emperor upon the formation of the Empire) had spared the people of Derchton from slaughter, and now gave them their own province (containing the city and much of the surrounding countryside, part of which had been destroyed by flood) to do as they wished to themselves.

It was in this way that Derchton became a province largely out of place within the Empire, politically backwards by being Socialistic in a Christian Capitalist nation.

Immediately after the war, the Derchtonians rebuilt their government (consisting of most of the same people as they had had before the war), and elected senators (all Socialist leadership) to go to the National Legislature.

The People’s Democratic Party, which became the center of opposition to the seemingly all powerful National Republican Party (National Christian Libertarian Party for the first several years), found the most substantial of its few footholds in Derchton, and, thanks to the heavy power allowed to the provinces by the Imperial Constitution (written by the Emperor), the province became a playground for PD policies.

In the past year, however, it seemed that these policies have fallen apart. The provincial economy, formerly held up largely by the national restrictions on economic restrictions and the otherwise booming national economy, suffered a terrible year, with unemployment reaching record levels for all of Errikland. This forced the region to look at many of their other problems: the highest drug addiction and suicide rate in the nation, the smallest percentage middle class, among other problems. The lower class, a group dwindling in most of Errikland but providing the backbone for PD power in Derchton, suffered the most from these turns of events. In the view of some political analysts, it may not be purely due to health problems, which had plagued Robsen for several years, that the he retired. It likely involved fear of being the People’s Democrat that lost the only solidly liberal province in Errikland.

Also contributing to the shifting electorate is the new generation of voters, voters educated largely by the National Errikan Education System. The NEES, as it is known, is part of the Emperor’s major nationalist reform, and thus those educated there tend to reflect the image of the solid Errikans that the Emperor envisioned being the backbone of the nation. They have a strong tendency to vote National Republican.

Out of this time of economic crisis and social shift that centered on the major cities, especially Derchton itself, those in the countryside, who had always been far in the background, saw their opportunity and need to become major players in Provincial Politics. Movements such as the Farmers’ Union and Forest Hippies’ Front had been growing in power steadily, but had not gotten powerful enough to unify and agree on their own candidates for the election. However, one group, Derchton First, a radical provincial rights group, was able to unite behind agricultural leader Robert Charleston. He is expected to draw support from both the Farmer’s Union and Forest Hippies’ Front.

As of this point, the National Republicans can hope to count on the New Republicans(new generation of educated voters), the Conservative Christians, and the leaders of business. Derchton First may draw votes against them, however, as they attract the support of farmers, herdsmen, miscellaneous rural folk, and provincial rights activists. The Universal Women’s Party can be sure to get support from drunk single women and people who lose bets. Meanwhile, the People’s Democratic Party is mostly trying to hold on to their traditional base of working class people, immigrants, and miscellaneous social outcasts. They are expected to lose female votes to the UWP and hippie votes to the DF, but are now appealing to the old guard(the old veterans of the civil war) for further support.
The swing votes seem to be Liberal Christians(small group), Rural Folk(between NR and DF), the lower middle class(between everyone, but largely the PD and NR), and people who are intoxicated(between everyone, but especially the UWP and the Independent candidate). However, from here, it seems any but the most polarized of votes can be shifted.

ENN Election Coverage:
People's Democratic Rally on Kertech Ridge
The Morey Campaign held a major rally today at Kertech Ridge, the famous site of the Kertech led wing of Socialist forces in the Battle of North Derchton. The decision to choose this site makes it clear to many that Morey intends to play up his own war record in the campaign.
The rally saw huge turnout, with ten thousand Morey supporters crowding the area on the wet morning.

“Today I call upon you, the people of Derchton, to make the right choice. The choice that will lead the way to greater civil rights and economic security, the choice that will lead to a smarter, more compassionate foreign policy. The choice of Philip K. Morey for Senator!”

Amidst heavy cheers from the crowd, he went on to outline his main points: that is, government support of labor unions, strictly curbed Imperialism, dramatically expanded foreign aid, religious equality and restrictions on the use of capital punishment.

“The worker is the backbone of the nation!” he said of labor unions, “Without him, there would be no nation! But the National Republicans don’t see this. They fight for the leaders of business, the Nicholas Clarks and the Chaim Goldsteins. They endorse those who oppress the worker! But I shall not follow in their footsteps!”

“The Moslem is just as much a man as you or me,” he said of religious equality, “He breaths the same air, walks the same soil, speaks the same tongue. And yet he does not get the right afforded to all men, the right to vote for his representatives! And yet he, like the Atheist and the Agnostic, must suffer an unfair tax burden while the Christians and the yids do not! I will extend suffrage to all and end the property exempt status for Christians and Jews!”

“Murder is wrong,” he said concerning capital punishment and imperial policies, “Capital Punishment is murder by the state. Imperialism is murder by the military. It does not matter that these people are criminals and barbarians. It is still murder!”

At the end of the rally, he promised to continue and expand upon the policies of the previous administration:
“You know me! Together we can defeat Johnson and finish the legacy of the Robsen administration!”

The rally was well received by PD leadership, but drew criticism from National Republicans. Morey’s speech was notably long, and, or so his critics say, rambling. However, supporters claim that this length allowed them to get a true feel for their candidate.

ENN Election Coverage:
National Republican rally held in Derchton Square

Today the National Republicans held a rally of their own in the center of the regional capital, Derchton Square. The crowds there rival the size of those of the Democratic rally, and dominate the center of the metropolis. Johnson’s choice of this historic site is likely an effort to associate himself with rebuilding and development, as well as provide a backdrop of government importance to his speech.

“Fellow Errikans,” he began, “This election is your chance for a change. The leadership of the People’s Democrats has led this province from bad to worse. While other provinces see unprecedented growth and prosperity, Derchton slumps into the worst recession in Errikan history. Our unemployment is the highest of all of northern Mucro, and our crime rates are quadruple the next most crime plagued area. What we need is change. And what better way to show the Nation that we are willing to take it than ousting the PD from our national representation?!”

Johnson made it clear to his listeners where he stood on very important issues, such as the economy, his main issue, as well as military policies and immigration control.

“The failed policies that the Robsen administration supported must not continue,” he said, speaking of economic policy, “We must allow business, the lifeline of the economy, to work and thrive, not smother it beneath the boot of oppressive government control!”

“Our Empire is a creature of expansion,” he stated concerning military policies, “Our expansion means the spread of Errikan Christian civilization across the globe. It means more resources and living room for the Errikan people. We must use our military to further that expansion.”

“Our Empire was created for the Errikan people,” he said regarding immigration control, “And must stay for the Errikan people. If we allow the pagan and the savage free reign, allow them to move in unrestricted, they will slowly strangle our way of life, our civilization. They will take the places formerly taken by Errikans in our society. Keep Errikland for Errikans!”

Johnson wrapped his speech up by restating his original point: that he would fight for the opposite ideals of Robsen, the opposite of the ideals that had gotten them in their current situation; that his were ideals that would help them out.

As a stark opposition to Morey’s lengthy speech, Johnson’s was far more brief and, as his supporters are quick to point out, to the point. Johnson wants to convey himself as a direct leader – always going straight to the point. In his view, this is just what the voters are looking for after the “showy and emotional” Robsen administration.

ENN Election Coverage:
Bob Charleston gives Speech to Unexpected Crowd

A very unusual part of a very unusual campaign, Derchton First Senatorial Candidate Robert Charleston gave a speech today in the middle of Wamberson Center, a major marketplace. Political analysts have long since stopped guessing why he does what he does.

“My friends,” he began (the first couple minutes of the speech were only caught on a camera his wife had at the time), “Derchton has continually had her rights and interests disregarded by the overreaching central government. We have suffered through the party politics and social and economic constraints of it. And where has that gotten us? What ever happened to provincial rights?!”

Though apparently entirely improvised, Charleston (who prefers to go by “Bob”)’s very brief speech attracted quite an audience, most of whom say they will vote for him in the election. Notable exceptions include Laurie Seinfeld, who plans to vote for herself, and Absam Assim, who cannot vote. This speech focused on Charleston’s single leading issue: provincial rights.

Johnson: 5,502,624 votes, ~35.84%
Morey: 5,519,512, ~35.95%
Charleston: 4,331,128, ~28.21%
Seinfeld: 18, ~.00011%
Hassim: 21, ~.00013%

Morey victory by 16,888 votes!

Poll results show that, despite the unusually low voter turnout, there was a very high turnout on the part of old Derchtonian patriots, as well as a general turnout on the part of the traditional, loyal People's Democrat voters, which led to his narrow victory. Neither Seinfeld or Hassim took away the votes that they were expected to draw from the PD.

Johnson, on the other hand, suffered heavily from the loss of agricultural voters, who were split between Johnson and Charleston 39%-61% as well as the loss of provincial rights supporters; his votes thus relied largely on the New Republicans, who, despite large turnout, had not yet grown enough as a group to completely push through a victory, and traditional Christians and businessmen, who, like the farmers, were also split with Charleston, though they were slanted more towards Johnson.

Despite these factors, the race was extremely close; a shift of a couple key counties could have changed the results. There was some doubt (nearly 1,000 dead people in the city Derchton voted for Morey), but this was never enough to shift the overall results.

Senator Morey intends to continue his predecessor's legacy of leading PD interests in the Senate.

The Democratic Soviets of Kravania has only just liberated itself from the chains of totalitarian oppression and statist and capitalist tyranny. Being a free nation of free and equal people, we understand all to well the meaning of oppression and injustice, we value freedom, be it social and political.

We would like to warn voters of certain canidates who have made it clear, their intention to abolish the freedoms of many citizens of Derchton.

Frank H. Johnson, the National Republican Party candidate has stated of his desire to deny those of the Islamic faith their democratic rights, in a manner most racist. This is not an act of secularism, given Mr. Johnson has no problesm with people of other religious convictions, namely Jews and Christians, from having the very rights he wishes to deny to Muslim citizens of Derchton.

Mr. Johnson also aims to have, as Derchton state policy, the death penalty for people of homosexual oreintation, again this is a disgusting act of bigotry and should Mr. Johnson win power, a campaign of state sanctioned mass murder of innocent people would become a reality.

Absam A. Hassim, of the Islamic Union Party, also supports the killing of innocent people due to their sexual orientation, just as Mr. Johnson does.

Mr Hassim also supports the abolition of rights of all those citizens of Derchton outside of the Islamic faith, again we find this a gross advocacy of state sponsored racism and oppression.

DO NOT VOTE FOR FRANK H. JOHNSON OR ABSAM A. HASSIM!

Added first speech. I will add in one thing such as this for each cantidate as I go along.

Just to clear up some other details, the election results may not exactly mirror the poll numbers, but they will be along the same lines unless something really strange occurs (I could not justify everyone voting for the independent, since no one really knows who he is). I have yet to vote, but will.

EDIT: I have finally added some pictures. I admit that these guys are a bit dark to be ethnic Errikans, but that is the best I can do for now.

The people of Derchton thank you for your concern. There are some striking mistakes in your current message that we must point out, however.

First, you must know that this is an election to be a national Senator, meaning that they would be influencing national policy more than provincial policy.
Second, anti-Islamic views cannot be racist, being that Islam is a religion, not an ethnicity. It would be racist if the sentiments were to be directed against all of Semetic ethnic background, which they are not.
Also, he does not wish to change the current policies regarding Islamic sufferage.

Derchton is not an independent state, but a province within the Errikan Empire.
And his support of this policy would not necessarily mean its application, and, even if it were, it would not be "murder" but punishment for those breaking the law. In what way would this be "bigotry" and in what way are they "innocent"? These are people who are knowingly engaging in illegal activities.

For the other, we have the same criticisms: "innocent"? and that religious belief does not constitute race.

Also, your mentioning of Hassim is likely to gain him some name recognition that he would not otherwise have. For those who are largely unknown, like Hassim, the best way to attack them is to not give them free advertising.

March on Empire, to your final glory, or defeat!

We, the people of the Latican Empire, wonder if you are anti-Imperialist. Or are you just against the ideals of your current Empire's emperor. If so, we will base our decision on your past mistakes, and will add variables about your military service. We believe, here in the Latican Empire, to lead a people's voice, you must first lead the people's sword. Therefore we only support pro-military and canidates that have even a minimial ammount of military leadership. As did the great Roman Republic. We have not casted our vote in your favor, yet, but your pro-military standing and military leadership will defiently turn our eyes, nearly, soully on your canidacy.
Also how do you feel on the relationship between the great Errikan and Latican Empires? Keep in mind we have been willing to sacrifice tens of thousands of our young men for our nation, but because of your people's steel nerves we have not had to shed any un-need blood. How do you feel on a total terrorist crack down? Do you believe it an invasion of privacy when you are protecting a nation, to over here a small affair? As if we would tell the world. Do you not believe that the both our goverments do care if our people are cheating or doing other "inapporpiate" things, while we have to deal with seroius problems. Adding on that tapping our phones, in our empirehad decreased terrorist cell counts by forty percent?
Reply to these question correctly and you shall be rewarded, canidate.

To: The Lactian Leadership

My position is against expanded imperialism, especially in the case of our Empire. However, I have no negative views regarding your nation, which has been a very good ally of ours. I would support continuing this relationship.

I do not really understand all of what you are asking about terrorists. I support government power on the home front, and defense against terrorists, even if it means tapping lines and watching certain freedoms, is important. This does not mean interfereing with religion, of course.

Oh, new speech up. This is for the National Republican.

I am considering just adding the remainder in all at once. This way people who vote will know all of what they are voting for as soon as possible.
