Overview
The Akagi-yen Imperium, or AYI as it is abbreviated, is a series of long islands and a short archipelago that historically have thrived on fishing, oil, and very little else. For five hundred years the state was split in civil war, between various shogunates, republics, and other forms of governments. Sometimes there was peace, but mostly there was war. Late in the 19th century an Emperor under the name of Horiyuko united the warring republics under his hand and waged war against the largest Shogunate, destroying it totally. The date of 25th September 1882 will live in Agaki history as the date the nation stood united at last. With the ascent to industrialized nation in 1923, the AYI found itself lacking in resources, especially steel. Previous shipping had been bought from foreign nations but the first steel plant was not made until sometime later. However, central planning from the government made possible the massive construction of infrastructure, coal mining, railways, steel, and shipping. Akagi-yen thrived.
In 2003, after ten years of civil disorder from unemployment and inflation, the Imperial Yen Army (IYA) with some support from the Imperial Yen Navy (IYN) siezed government buildings and begun their military coup, destroying the democratic government and forming a military dictatorship "for the people, from the people." Relations with neighbouring Shaxsan are currently reaching boiling point as the two nations may head for war.

Government:
The Government is lead by the Head of State, Emperor Isoruku Toroshiyo, who has little real political power, although he is worshipped by the highly religious people and the state government endorses this. There are no elections, as the military dictatorship forbids them, although the people seem to be content to be ruled by the dictatorship that provides their daily needs. The Emperor himself resides in Fokuokyo in the Imperial Palace. The government, fairly large for its size, operates on a "father knows best" system, executing political dissidents and assassinating political opponents. With control of the military, which is fully and fanatically loyal to the Emperor, the occasional riots are sometimes repressed, but the people are generally happy with what they have, even if it is so little.
Externally, the state is somewhat belligerent, but as of now has no power to back this up and prefers to secure its place, building up relations, economy, and military until it can engage in imperialism: the glorious expanse of the Akagi nation. Particularly friendly to other religious military dictatorships, if they exist, the Akagi-yen secures its diplomacy by the combined method of sucking up to existing powers while occasionally making a diplomatic show that it has the willpower to resist them.

Economy Overview
The Akagi-yen economy is a highly developed, industrialized economy with a large labour base. Production lies in corporations that cooperate with the state and each other, providing their employees with jobs for the rest of their lives and a healthy pension scheme, although few corporations offer healthcare plans, coal mining being one of the few. The economy, after a massive down-period, is on the up with exports and imports giving the people of Akagi-yen an ever growing choice, especially in food, where rice and fish and occasionally pork used to be the only thing eaten. The large manufacturing base and experience in mass production and production lines willl ensure that the Akagi people can adapt to wahtever they need to construct, be it cars, planes, ships, or weapons of war.
Giant megacorporations dominate the economy, with maybe two to three per sector, and although they have much freedom the government has the final say, and no corporation dares challenge it. Corporations also put pressure on their workers with patriotism and strong work ethics, with occasional visits from royalty or government to keep inspiring loyalty among the populace despite bad living conditions and ever darkening skies.

Education:
Education is totally privatized, however some corporations practice the Corporate Scholar Program. Children of their employees are selected if they have an outstanding result from an aptitude test, and the corporation then pays for their full education. After this education they will probably work for the corporation, either as scientists, researchers, managers, or supervisors. The government also takes aptitude tests, and some children are educated, but the education budget is low and higher education is expensive. A good way to be educated is to join the military and become an officer or engineer.

Technology
Techologically anything is available in Akagi-yen, but its probably not affordable and Akagi people have little interest in high tech gadgets that won't help them run their lives. Televisions are popular, as are radios and telephones, but mobiles and computers less so - the role of the desktop computer is for offices and is rarely used at home. The government, despite being a military dictatorship, does not run the radio or the television though it has its own channels, nor does it restrict internet access, though it has a state ISP that is much cheaper but restricts material that it doesn't want its subscribers to see.

Geography:
The north of the country descends into vast snow during the winter months and ice makes transportation difficult, even by air and sea, so hard are the conditions, but the rest of the country has generally tropical weather, especially the two southernmost islands, which are jungly with a string of mountains and cliffs facing outwards which inevitably are occupied by the military, known as Mount Kuchikensuntai (Tachi) and Mount Rukekerusentai (Ryoko). Fokuokyo itself is built on Mount Tarisentasuki although parts have been levelled for ships to dock in and planes to land on. Average heat in the south is some 32 degrees while as much as 400km north it may lower by as much as 25 degrees centigrade! There are several large fishing zones that are protected adn the government monitors and regulates, as well as oil fields.

Main highways link all the cities, and ferries and large transport aircraft ferry large material across the islands. The definitive and giant public transport network, split between rail, bus, and ferry, conquers most of transport while private transport is limited to the extremely rich or extremely mobile, not just because of the high cost and unavailability of fuel for private consumption, but the state services are very efficient and well run.

The small standing army of 120,000 and a navy half the size is dedicated to lightning operations, combined arms, and decent training.
