Night grasped the sky but its' hold began to slwoly slip with the sun. It had been a cool night due to the breeze. Jonensburg was quiet for the most part, except the bar crowd and prostitutes. About a few miles away, just outside city limits was the victorian style house of Senator Alexsandr Greganov. His home was finely decorated with paintings, sculptures, and a well stocked library. The life of a senator was good for the most part for this 55 year old man. His wife was away in New Archangel, visiting their grandchildren. Alexsandr reluctlantly couldn't go, pressing matters needed attended to. Life as a senator can be stressful. His bed was a king sized bed with decorated oak banisters on all four corners. The clock read 3:15 when he lazily looked to it. he rubbed the sleep from his eyes. A sound echoed from downsatairs, a clanking sound. It startled him just as he was in mid yawn.
The senator jolted up in the bed and sat there, motionless. What was that? There was no other sound. he slipped his feet into his slippers and put on a blue robe, tieing it around his body. Alexsandr was a bit hefty, nothing horrible but packing on a few extra pounds. His bifocales lay on the table which he picked up quietly and put them on. I know I heard something. It was dark inside the house. A grandfather clock downstairs ticked the time away at a steady pace. he sneaked down the hallway which was lit by shafts of light from the moon every so few feet due to the windows.Alexsandrs' aged right hand slid over the wall to help guide him. It's probably nothing but I'm up now. he sighed and continued into the darkness. The staircase led down to the first floor which was all but pitch black. At the top he stood for several seconds and listened, nothing but the grandfather clock. Confident, he stepped slowly down the stairs. One foot carefully in front of the other.
All was still, quiet, and dark. Just as night time should be. Alexsandr took in a deep breath and continued, now on the first floor. he made a turn and stopped. A window was open in the living room. The wind must've blown it open. he walked over and placed a hand on it. This wasn't the first time a gust of wind ever blew open a window. Even senators fall prey to nature's tricks. he chuckled to himself and closed it. Back to bed, that's enough suspense for one night. he turned around in the dark and carefully walked away, content in his discovery.
All of a sudden a hand clasped over his mouth and another brought his arm back behind him. the phantom began to pull the arm back further, Alexsandr tried to scream but his mouth was covered by a leather hand, his shouts were mere muffles. he winced in pain as it felt like his arm was being pulled out of its' socket.
"Don't speak, only listen" a raspy voice whispered next to his ear. "I have a message for you". The assailant whispered something even more quietly into his ear. Alexsandr's eyes shot wide open and he began to tremble in horro. The assailant's words shot through him like an arrow. His arm finally snapped...it was broken. he gave out a muffled shout. The assailant let go of the limp arm and put his large hand on Alexsandr's head. The hand covering the mouth slid away as the senator grunted and winced in unbelieveable pain, but said nothing. Without warning, the assailant snapped his neck with tremendous force. Alexsandr dropped to the ground next to the couch like a lead weight. With half of his mission complete the killer stepped over Alexsandr's warm body and went straight towards his private study. Killing the senator was only part of why he was there. The killer carefully and skillfully sifted through a drawer, finding a small black book. He took this item and quietly slipped out of a window, mission accomplished.

3:30 A.M.

The assasin slipped down the streets, like a phantom. A group of young men left a bar and spilled out onto the street. They were too drunk to notice him so he continued to walk, it was a brisk night. He put his hands inside the pockets of his peacoat and continued down the street. After several blocks he made a left into The People's memorial Park, a beautiful park filled with trees, places to eat and sunbath, similar to Central Park. The assasin walked down the paths through the trees. Then, after a short walk he declined into a tunnel. Inside the tunnel stood a man in a trenchcoat.
"Is it done?" This mysterious man asked.
"You have put yourself at risk by coming here personally" the assasin pleaded "Perhaps you should leave-"
"Is it done?" he asked again.
"Yes, the target is eliminated and I have what you seek" The assasin took out a small black book from his inside coat pocket.
"Give me the book" the man demanded. To this the assasin handed him the book. The man took out a cell phone and handed it to the assasin.
"This phone has a special number on it. It took alot of work to get this number from the secure line. Call it, and say 'It is done' say that and only that then hang up and I will dispose of the phone" the man instructed. The assasin dialed the number and waited, it rang three times, the other line picked up
"It is done" the assasin stated plainly and hanged up. He handed the phone to the man and he put it away.
"The money is in the account. I will call if your services are required again." He then disappeared into the darkness and the assasin departed as well.

Prime Minister Dantes's Residence

"Who was that, dear?" Tanya Dantes asked as she stirred from her slumber. The ring of the phone shattered their sleep. Gregor Dantes laid there, leaned towards the dresser next to the bed, holding the phone.
"I don't know who that was" he replied in a sleepy tone "Probably a wrong number" he put the phone up and went back to sleep...

Juliet opened her window to a fresh new day. The sun was shining but it was still bitterly cold outside. She turned on the TV and went into another room to get some water boiling for her customary cup of tea. Seen starting freelance work she had found that life was a little tougher, but it was better than being ruled over by that idiot of an editor. Wait she said to herself, until you get a big stroy, you'll show him. Now, tea brewed she walked into her main room with the TV blaring.

"BREAKING NEWS: Senator Alexsandr Greganov DEAD."

She raised her eyebrows, she hadn't like the man but this? She continued listening. Apparently he had been killed between the hours of 3 and 4 in his house which lay on the outskirts of Jonensburg. This was big she thought. The oppurnunities were endlesss, and Juliet had a way with chaos, which she was certain would ensue. Out og the darkness she could always bring light (or cash). She decided that simply attempting to get a Political article seen would be impossible, she had to find a new angle on this: a scoop.

She got her bag and headed for his house in Jonensburg, a fine way to start.

...

She drove up to the busy house, there were police officers, journalists, hosipital workers, you name it they were there. However she didn't give up at the sign of so much interest. On the contary, she warmed to it, got out and made for the nearest officer.

Ministry of Domestic Security, Jonensburg

Chief Director Nemrov ordered an emergency meeting with his staff. News of the death of Alexsandr Greganov reached them just a few hours ago. The government is in a flurry of activity in response to this. Members of Greganov's party made appearences as well did the Prime Minister on television. Greganov was a major political figure, one who was campaigning for the Prime Minister elections and was a favored contender. The board room was filled with leaders of the MDS. Phones were ringing, men debating, and so on.
"Gentlemen, what do we have so far?" Nemrov interrupted. He was a man in his fifties, with a gray beard and an iron will. He was a major driving force in the MDS and well respected.
"Sir, Judiciary police were the first on the scene after his wife discovered the body early this morning. Right now it's chaos at his residence as on lookers and other people surround the house. Our crime scene units are just now arriving at the scene. We'll get a status report from them within the hour" one of the deputy directrs replied.
"We need to be careful about this one. Any screw ups and heads will roll, people. How are the Judiciary Police handling their end?" Nemrov asked.
"Sir, they have detained and questioned several people who were in the area around the time of death. So far, no leads"
"Alright people you all know what to do. I want some of our agents on this asap"
"We already dispatched them, sir"
"Good, let's get to work and get to the bottom of this. Every hour wasted means the trail gets colder" Nemrov walked out of the room as it bursted into activity. He went back to his office and sat down, pouring a glass of brandy to calm his nerves.

Kulikovian News Network, KNN

"It is a sad day in Kulikovia. Prime Minister Canidate Alexsandr Greganov was found dead in his home early this morning by his wife. Authorities are not releasing much more information about this but have scheduled a news conference later this day. Judiciary Police and MDS agents are on the scene and investigations as we are sure are already underway, we now go to Sophie Mitkin who is at Senator Greganov's residence"

"Thank you, it is indeed a disasterous day here in Kulikovia. We have seen crime scene teams arrive just a few minutes ago and they are from the MDS. This has led many to believe that the Senator's death is something more than wjat we have been told, which is little at this moment. Leaders of the Revolutionary Party will be on the air a few hours from now as will Prime Minister Dantes. The nation mourns a famous and well like political leader"

"Keep us posted Sophie. Senator Greganov has been in the news quite alot in the past few months, starting when he announced his intention to run for Prime Minister. Many found his message and stances appealing as the nation traverses through rough seas. The war in Algeria has weakened Prime Minister Dantes influence and popularity. He will be missed"

After attempting to gain some information from the officer, to no avail she went and aquired herself a cup of coffee from the KNN snack van.

Juliet waited about half an hour before wondering whether or not she should leave. The sun was shining still, and the later in the day it got the warmer it got. Some journalists had given up and left, but Juliet never gave in until she was certain nothing more could be gained, sometimes should could be inventive.

Then several surprisingly chunking crime scene units from the MDS rolled up. More than a dozen different people got out of the black metal vans, police photographers, forensics, detectives, doctors etc. The gate was opened and they filed in. The news teams surrounded the new arrivals asking pointless questions shoving tape recorders, cameras and mircophones in their faces. All the cameras got was a smarm of secruity men shouting "stand back!".

When the last of the officers got out of the van, and were being caged by the media Juliet went to check out the unmanned vechicles. Spying the back door left open she hoped in looking for something. In the back she caught sight of an unwisely left white overalls (the type usually styled by forensic doctors. She conspicuosly slipped into it. and grabbed a remaining medical bag. She hurried to join the back of the crowd of doctors. She slipped in unoticed and followed the others up to the house, smiling under her mask...

A black car sneaked its' way through the crowd to the road block which led up to the senator's residence. A policeman halted the car. A window rolled down and a arm stretched out holding credentials. The policeman waved him through and the car continued up the long driveway. Around the house were police vehicles, mediacl vans, ambulance, etc. It was a flurry of activity. Helicopters droned overhead. MDS Agent Adrian Konovski stepped out of the car. He yawned from exhaustion. He awoke early that morning with the call, on his day off. He scratched his dark hair and walked into the residence. Inside, crime scene units, medical examiners, investigators were all busy. Adrian located the chief examiner.
"Status?" Adrian asked.
"Well, we've never seen anything like this before" the examiner began to brief, they walked over to the body, left undisturbed "The assailant used tremendous force to snap the neck clear around. The vertebrate, muscle, connecting tissue, all torn to pieces. Death was instantanious. That's not all. It appears he suffered another injury prior to death. His arm was broken, probably as the assailant seized him."

The senator's neck was twisted and bruised from broken blood vessels. The discoloring and injuries were sickening. Adrian looked away from the body. At that time, the public didn't know the extent to what happened. All they knew was that the senator was dead/ Already the reaction was traumatic. If the public knew at this stage that it was murder, they may begin to suspect political leaders, such as the Prime Minister. The two of them were locked in heated debates on television and a brutal mudslinging campaign.
"Is there anything else? Fingerprints maybe?" Adrian asked as he jotted down info on his notepad.
"We've found no fingerprints, no sign of forced entry, no sign of anything being stolen" he replied.
"It looks like an assasination to me" Adrian stated. He decided to go no further, he waned to wait for his partner to arrive before they got too involved.

Constitutional Party Headquarters

The Constitutional Party Headquarters are located in the port city of New Archangel. The building's exterior is black tinted windows all around and is ten stories high and of descent square feet. This was home to the party's strategists and leaders. Here fundraisers, political races, dealings, etc. are coordinated. The Constitutional Party is one of the oldest political parties. However, they have not been in power for over ten years. That was all changing when Alexsandr Greganov was chosen to be the canidate for Prime Minister. Also, enormous amounts of funds poured into his war chest and some of it was believed to have gone into the pockets of party leaders.

Party Leader Gunther Hylland sat in his office. The death of Greganov seamed to have dealt a serious blow to the party. The 52 year old man was busy all morning with meetings, phone calls, press conferences, and much more. His tie was relaxed and his cuffs rolled up as he worked hard. A cellphone rang in his jacket pocket which sat on a couch. Gunther walked over and picked it up.
"Hello?...Yes...No, everything's fine...I know your concern, we're all concerned but there's nothing we can do...yeah...I don't think you need to worry, it will all be fixed" the other line went dead and he put the cellphone away. His door opened up and his secretary, a young attractive woman named Tanya popped her head in.
"Mr.Hylland, a man from Yalta Oil is here to see you. He doesn't have an appointment, should I send him away?" she asked.
"No, send him in" he responded without hesitation. An average sized man wearing a suit walked straight in and closed the door on the secretary.
"Gunther, how do you think this will affect everything?" the man asked.
"Don't worry, Erik. A setback yes, but everything will be fine." Gunther replied as he sat back down. Erik walked to the window to survey the city.
"Gunther, the Senate's Committee on Oil Companies are breathing down my neck pretty bad. Shifts in money from account to account and that one scandal two months ago have them dogging me at every turn. We're regulated to within an inch of our lives. I need room to breath. Greganov promised that, and now-"
"We all agreed to it, even you" Gunther interrupted "We didn't want to but we had to. This whole incident will divert their attention away and then we can think about our next course of action. Just trust me, Erik. Everything will be fine." They talked for some time longer.
