You needed a lawyer.

Contracts got tricky. Colonies refused to recognise escrow agencies. The enemy offered even more money than the ally. All sorts of things had meant, back in the Slammers' independant days, that you needed to lug a lawyer with you on most assignments. Or rather a Warrant Leader who had taken legal studies at somewhere other than the back of beyond.

Since first contact, and, to a lesser extent, since Friesland had established its "Army for Hire" policy, much the same could be said of diplomats. You never knew what could go wrong, and powerguns were only a solution to culturally incompatibility when money was not at stake. Still, they were extremely efficient when it wasn't.

So diplomats were readily available. The nearest was a Luitenant ter Zee 1ste klasse Blood, of the Friesland Navy, had been briefed hastily, shoved into a courier ship, and dispatched. Who knew what was coming?

"Client, this is Andree Blood, envoy of the Friesland Colonial Republic. What do you wish to discuss?

Klasina Molenaar, formerly Kolonel Kalsina Molenaar, had a good life. She was an accountant, which for her was high paying and easy. She had made plenty of cash publishing her mmeoirs and a little more doing field manuals for the army. She had served in it, defence and merc regiments, and had gained a reputation and a Masters Degree from the school of hard knocks on her way up the ladder to colonel of CCB, Modular Strike Division. And as a regimental XO, she had survived the biggest politically motivated FUBAR since World War One.

She was ideal: retired, adventurous, a good officer, and a veteran of the Sephriothan debacle. Unfortunately the sense of adventure needed some helping.

"You want me to do what?"

"You'll be re-enstated and count as on combat duty for purposes of pay. If you volunteer. Or I can dragoon you and not pay anything. Your choice."

Now that was an... offer that she couldn't refuse. And so, a few days later, she found herself in a cutter easing its way into a dcking bay on Hope.

You couldn't cave in to threats. After all, as a senior officer, the people who did looked at you for help.

"Okay, what's the easy way. And depending on your answer, you may wnat to call it the hard way or the Sephriothan way."

Klasina thought about it for some time. It was logical and at least they had the courtesy not to let the soldiers do it, but she had deep misgiving about stripping in front of aliens. And besides, they're supposed to be peaceful and they've payed for me. What's the worst they'll do?

And if it's more than I expected, that's why they pay us the big Gilders, said her senior officers voice. She threw a pistol, sword, and trench knife on the floor in front of them.

"I'm afraid I'm going to have to refuse."

Okay, okay, perhaps this had been a bad idea. Still, it had happened, and no-one was about to die. Hereos happen because somebody made a mistake, after all...

And there were a lot of armed men around. That changed perspective considerably, so Klasina didn't make any attempt to resis. The line between brave and stupid is well defined. If you die for no good reason, it's stupid.

Child? That was too far. There were things you called a hired security advisor, and while "insolent money-grubbing foreigner" was on of them, "child" was not.

"Look soldier, and since I'm entering your chain of command I really don't feel obliged to say "sir". There are people who don't give money to the homeless, and there are people who murder civilians for fun. That doesn't make not giving money to the homeless a good thing. And no matter how old you are, I'm not child to anyone but my dad and God."
