Shattered Peace: A Civil War
The sun began to peak over the horizon, it’s first rays tentatively reaching out over the water from one end of the bay to the other, washing over the Telsorian capital of Nova Aquilus and illuminating the modern city in a beautiful orange light. But the sight that lay in the city’s center vanquished what beauty the present offered; its Capitol building, which housed the National Citizen’s Assembly, lay in ruins having been obliterated by an object that previous night. Even now the ruins were still sundering, pouring ominous clouds of smoke into the otherwise pristine sky above.
Standing in his office, Chancellor Alamen Hergonoy looked from the Chancellery across the vast Citizen’s Park; what he saw still made his knees weak and his heart weep in both sorrow and anger for both houses of the assembly and a good deal of everyday citizens had been present to witness his confirmation before the Council of Provinces (OOC: read upper house of the Assembly, like a Senate or House of Lords). Now, all those people were dead. Save but a few minutes from the building himself, he had seen the explosion engulf the structure and bring the once dominating structure to the ground. His arm, which was now in a cast, paid testament to the force which had severed the head of Telsoria in one fell swoop. But he could not change the past so he decided it best to look towards the future. Managing to tear his eyes away from the office’s windows, he sat behind the large wooden desk, the centerpiece of the spacious and plush office, just in time for his phone to beep.
“Yes, Jalena. What is it?”
“Minister Yurga and Marshall Byuat are here, Chancellor”, the disembodied female voice responded.
“Thank you.”
As he killed the line, the door at the other end of the room opened and Marshall Byuat, Chief of the Defense Council at the Defense Ministry and his own Defense Minister entered. Alamen gestured toward two seats before his desk.
“Please sit. What progress has been made?”
The Minister began, “Chancellor, we have reason to suspect it was indeed the PPRZ (OOC: Provisional People’s Republic of Zartamala, a breakaway ‘province’, think China and Taiwan except reversed. Telsoria is a democracy, while the PPRZ broke away to form what is now essentially a Stalinist/Maoist dictatorship) who engineered the attack on the Capitol last evening. We are still scouring the ruins in cooperation with other Federal and Local Agencies. We believe it was a medium sized aircraft, filled with explosives, which was used but the fires have left little evidence to allow us a truly accurate understanding of exactly what happened.
The Minister turned to Marshall Byuat, she was Chief of the Defense Council and thus the ranking officer in the Telsorian National Defense Force.
“Sir, if it was indeed the PPRZ then our options are very limited. Most of our Army is, as you know, a Militia so all we have at the moment is approximately two regiments of active duty soldiers, including one armoured company. However, we’ve begun drafting call-up orders to our inactive units, and they are ready to go out today. Since last evening we’ve sent out cruising orders to one AEGIS crusier and two ASW/ASUWfrigates (the TNV Libertas, TNV Gretor, and TNV Valoria, respectively) to make best speed for the demarcation line. I’ve also ordered the 3rd Attack Fighter Squadron at Tresta to standby alert. The 1st Fighter Squadron just outside Nova Aquilus is also standing up, just in case.”
And I promised peace with the PPRZ if I was elected, Alamen thought to himself. Am I a hypocrite?
The Chancellor sighed in resignation: “Very well, then.”
The two stood and left. On the drive back to the Defense Ministry, Marshall Byuat leaned over to the Defense Minister, “Will he be able to go through with a war against these people?”
“As always, he will do what he thinks is right”, came the terse reply.
OOC: My first RP. Hope everyone likes it. Right now I’d like one person to ‘back’ the PPRZ, and another to ‘back’ Telsoria. Of course, the more people the better but I’d like to have those slots filled first, if possible. And please telegram or PM me if you want to get involved.
Also, here’s (http://img279.imageshack.us/img279/4894/maptx9.png) a map of Telsoria/PPRZ for reference.
