Scattered Remnants of Ireland (SRI) - A Factbook
History
The SRI was a large coalition of systems in the 3rd arm of the galaxy (1st being the arm pointing galactic north). It was founded several centuries ago, by a reckless experiment that took place on their home planet. When the experiment started, the new world government was sending death squads to find and capture those it labeled degenerates (psykers, evolving/mutating humans, those with cybernetic implants, along with all the classical "degenerates" such as homosexuals or the religious) for mass extermination. A scientist secured a batch of these degenerates, mostly taken from Ireland, and loaded 500,000 of them onto what was called a "Hive ship" and launched them into the Warp, towards a distant sun. After spending 300 years in the Warp, the Hive ship dropped back into realspace, and the unwilling colonists landed on what would become the capital, a blue planet named Dublin.
(Yes, I know, a lot of that was blatantly ripped from Starcraft)
Fast forward a few millenia later, the colonists have prospered, thrived, and grown in power. The Republic of Irish Systems (RIS) was peaceful, and prosperous. However, tragedy would strike, due to events beyond the control of the colonists. A massive rift in the Warp tore through the sector that the RIS was located in, and destroyed the systems overnight. However, not all of the Irish perished with them. The RIS government had several years' forewarning (largely due to the large concentration of psykers in the population), and decided to do what was best for the people: They constructed as many Hive ships (these had evolved after millenia of colonising the area, and this generation was designated the Mk. V) as they could, and created a cross-section of the population, so that those most likely to survive the catastrophe and the following exodus were put on the ships. And so, after the cataclysm occured, a population of trillions was reduced to a little over a billion people, spread across 10 Hive Fleets with 4 Hive Ships in each (each ship holding 27,650,000 poeple), escorted be a few hundred capital ships. The Hive Fleets have one goal: Find a new home for their people.
The government of the SRI is mostly run by the military, although a civilian government takes care of security on the actual Hive ships. The Hive Fleets have no true economy. All civilians are given food rations once daily, clothing rations once a month, and are provided housing and work, usually work geared to munitions manufacture and maintenence of the fleets. The fleets are notable for their unique computer systems, and the tenacity of their regulars (the Irish Guard).
