The Blubs go nuclear (MT, open)

Blub City, United Blubland

Time had passed since the brief, efficient warfare that freed the Blubs from their captors and creators. Blubland had turned into a sprawling, beautiful country from its mountaintops to its shimmering blue and green lakes. The Blubs intended to keep their country clean and so, much thought was put into how to keep the growing cities of Blubland powered with electricity.

At first, massive windfan farms were constructed in the grassy plains at the foot of the mountain ranges. This proved somewhat inefficient and served to provide somewhat less than the projected 18% of Blubland's energy needs.

And so, the Blubs had done some research and settled on a reasonable alternative. Nuclear power.

The first plant was constructed along a river just outside of Blub City, the capital of Blubland. It was a large facility featuring no less than twenty hyperboloid shaped cooling towers and three reactors. The reactors were sensible and efficient Liquid Metal Fast Breeder Reactors (LMFBR).

This is a reactor design that is cooled by liquid metal, and totally unmoderated. These reactors can function much like a PWR in terms of efficiency, and don't require much high pressure containment, as the liquid metal doesn't need to be kept at high pressure, even at very high temperatures. Using lead as the liquid metal provides excellent radiation shielding, and allows for operation at very high temperatures. Also, lead is (mostly) transparent to neutrons, so fewer neutrons are lost in the coolant, and the coolant does not become radioactive. Unlike sodium coolant, lead is mostly inert, so there is less risk of explosion or accident.

It would be called the Crystalwater Nuclear Plant, and would be maintained by a crack team of well-educated Blubs. Further, in this era of international dangers, a military garrison would be maintained to protect the facility from harm.
