German military forces launch an air campaign against the Hungarian military in response to its coup. The campaign last four months, and is physically ineffective, although it persuades the Hungarian military to allow German officials to enter the government ensure the transition of power. German officials sercretly sponsor an intelligence ploy to install a puppet government in Hungary. (The operation is currently still being carried out)
Terrorist attack on the Bundestag slays the majority of the government, forcing emergency elections. The Left Party forms a new coalition government with the other parties, with its new chairman Klaus Lederer. The new Bundestag declares a state of emergency and anti-terrorist operations.
An investigation into the attacks reveal a Turkish minority conspiracy. Chancellor Lederer subtley directs the ethnic non-Turkish population against the minority, in a small campaign of intolerance. Meanwhile, distracted by the terrorism, the Left Party quietly begins to phase out non-Party Members in certain government departments. 'Evidence' points to non-Turkish collaborators, and bythe end of the year a government-run operation arrests thousands of potential conspirators.
The (LP-controlled) Bundestag begins motions to open up diplomatic conferences with Austria regarding a new Anschluss. Left Party agents begin infilitrating Austria. An elaborately planned 10-year campaign of subtle politicking is begun. Chancellor Lederer orchestrates support to keep many of the emergency powers as natural powers of the office.
LP Agents organize a pro-Anshcluss rally in Vienna, to give the appearance of Austrian intialization of the notion. Chancellor Lederer responds by announcing he will make it the work of his time in office to follow up on the united wishes of all Germanic peoples. The first of several Anschluss Conferences is held in Vienna. Meanwhile, the LP begins secret agitation regarding the return of former German lands in Poland, the Czech Republic, and Russia.
Germany begins a revolutionary campaign to end oil-dependency (this is also done to show German prominence to Austria). Pebble bed (nuclear) reactors and electric cars & trains are subsidized and a massive propoganda spree is launched to promote their use. A program to develop nuclear weapons begins.
The first Pebble bed reactor opens near Munich. By the end of the years, many more will have been finished. An indepedent space program begins. In addition, the government begins granting large tax bonuses and other generous to families who have more children, in an attempt to reverse the population droop.
Bundestag debates end in the passing of two controvesial bills. The first, called the Volksreich Bill, declaring Germany has the right to intervene anyway to portect German people, rights, and property. This bill is controversial due to the fact it could be used to rationalize a war with any neighbor holding German land. The second bill authorizes the Bundestag to enlarge the military to 'the size it deems necessary to preserve the safety of the German people'.
The Bundestag passes legislation ordering all foreign military forces to leave Germany within 3 years. Meanwhile, Bundeswehr forces overseas are gradually recalled. Germany enriches uranium and begins production of nuclear weapons.
The new Chancellor, Heinrich Jager, orders an overhaul of the Bundeswehr, with new technology developed, and an overall increase in size to start over a ten-year period. A new naval program also begins, with plans to build three nuclear aircraft carriers, and ten nuclear-warhead carrying submarines.
Second Austro-German Anschluss Conference. Results satisfy both sides, with Austria retaining independence, but Germanic ties increasing. The Bundestag announces the formation of the National German Youth Corps.
By this time, the Left Party has secretly taken over the government. Most real political opposition is either in jail, or is unaware its really working with the LP. The Bundeswehr begins large-scale war games in every front. The government begins to increase economic ties with all neighboring nations. It also begins establishing cells of agents in many countries, especially bordering ones.
Germany opens negotiations with Russia for the return of Konigsburg/Kaliningrad. By this time, it is also fairly oil independent. Other nations begin to emulate its program. Germany succeeds, after two manned-orbit missions, in landing a crew of three on the moon, thus being the first to do so since the Americans. The German flag is planted, along with a small plaque commerorating German rocket scientists. The German Space Agency then announces it will soon launch a space station.
Another terrorist attack is attempted by Turkish students on a Bundeswehr airbase. The government responds by isolating Turkish minorities from others. Another campaign of propaganda, aimed at uniting Germanics against non-Germanics, but done in a low-key way to avoid similiarites with the Nazi party, is carried out.
Germany also sends limited aid to the Albanian offensive in Macedonia, in the form of rations and medical equipment.
The Bundestag calls for 500,000 volunteers to pass through the military. This is done as a show of strength, and to dissuade terrorists. The Third Anschluss Conference is held. By this time, popular support on both sides is at a feverish pitch. But the Chancellor Klaus Steiner does not call for the plebiscite yet. Meanwhile, the German space station Von Braun is launched. The Bundestag then decreases space funding to the amount required for few launces and providing for the station.
Germany asks Poland and Russia formally and internationally for the return of land lost at the end of World War Two. Citing reperations, apologies, and humility, the Chancellor appears humble and stout to the German people, despite the request being turned down.
