The Empire of the Rising Sun

Population: 245,752,060
GDP: $13,670,631,731,874.88
GDP per capita: $55,627
Government: Constitutional Monarchy
Chief of State: Emperor Yasuhito
Head of Government: Prime Minister Saito Takeshi

Economy: Japan is an economic powerhouse, home to some of the world’s largest corporations, called Zaibatsu. Today’s Zaibatsu are massive, vertically and horizontally integrated businesses, and have a virtual stranglehold on the Japanese economy. The Zaibatsu have been responsible for much of Japan’s continued economic growth, due largely to the amount of political clout they wield. Indeed, the Zaibatsu have virtually written the country’s business laws, and are responsible for the Second Economic Miracle in the 60’s.

Japan is largely reliant on trade partners for food, importing roughly 50% of its food from abroad, the rest being supplied by the country’s heavily subsidized agricultural industries, which boast crop yields among the highest in the world. Other imports include a wide variety of raw materials, as the Japanese archipelago is remarkably poor in mineral wealth. Exports run the gamut of finished goods, including high grade electronics, consumer goods, and armaments.

Foreign Affairs: Japan has historically remained politically isolated, especially with the disbandment of the United Nations in 2020. Except for the occasional conference, the Japanese government has kept to itself. The Zaibatsu, however, have been quite busy, investing heavily in Asia, America, and, starting in 2014, Korea.

After the Unification, the new Korean government had extreme difficulties. The poverty of the former DPRK, combined with the festering morass that was the former DPRK government, dragged down the economy, and the new government responded by simply printing more money, too burdened with the massive task of unifying the nation to make an economic difference. Within a few years, the government was massively in debt, and the won was nearly worthless. Seeing an opportunity, the Zaibatsu began to invest heavily in the Korean economy and government, slowly repairing the damage. The Zaibatsu also began to buy out many of the floundering Korean companies, with the Yamatetsu Corporation managing to acquire a controlling interest in Hyundai Heavy Industries. The Korean economy is largely controlled by the Zaibatsu to this day, and their government is still propped up by continued Zaibatsu investment, without which is would quickly fail.

Relations have remained amiable with the United States, and Japan continues to be a powerhouse in the world market. Japan’s border dispute with Russia simmers on, with the occasional shouting match the most that has happened in years. Japan has kept a careful eye on the PAC, not forgetting the bitter wars that were fought so close to their shores only a few years ago.

Holdings: On March 29th, 2100, following the collapse of the Korean government, Japan officially declared the United Korean State a part of the Japanese Empire, with all Korean nationals granted Japanese citizenship. All do and gwangyoksi have been reorganized as prefectures, maintaining the same borders and names.

Military

Japan's military is unique. Officially, Japan has no military. Instead, it maintains the Japanese Self Defense Forces (JSDF). All personnel are technically civilians, classified as special civil servants, and are subordinate to the ordinary civil servants who run the Defense Agency.
