"And by the will of the people it shall be done." Andriy Rossakov, the leader of the Daranovan Independence Movement, finished reading the declaration of Independence from the Allied States. The Allied States of Rodinakov was made up for three small states bound together by a treaty several decades old. Although population had stayed roughly within the same boundaries, the nation had progressed from its old agricultural routes to a more industrial approached, mining ore and coal from the giant, possibly unpassable mountains and coal fields that bordered them.
The largest of the three states, Varishova, also held the ethnic majority with 75% of the Allied States population being Varishovans, with a smattering of Daranovans and Kharovans, with some Jews and Indians thrown into the mix. For years since the formation of the Treaty of Rodinagrad [1956] which had ended years of bloody war, the Varishovans had oppressed the Daranovans through tyranny by majority. Despite a vast majority of communists, some Varishovans even advocated such things as race war to force the Daranovans off their land.
The Daranovan Independence Movement, set up in '73 after a Daranovan school was bombed by a Varishovan nationalist, was an Independence and partially supremacist group set up to combat Varishovan nationalism and ultimately to liberate Daranova, as its manifesto stated. With the execution of the Daranovan politican Ivan Torrokovsky for 'traitorous acts against the motherland', the Movement had gained support, and in 2005 it became strong enough that fifty percent of Daranovans supported it.
So it came on the 8th October 2006, that Daranova signed its Independence from the Allied States, with control of a pair of infantry brigades, a squadron of interceptors, and a pair of Navy frigates, and an hour later, war broke out.
Daranovan - Varishovan Border, 14:15
"Echo Four Four, radio check, over."
"Hello Echo Four Four, this is Echo Four Three, OK, over."
"Hello Echo Four Four, this is Echo Four Two, OK, over."
"Echo Four Four, radio check over, out."
The three Tupolev 95Ms drifted over the northern water border between Daranova and Varishova, followed by a 95RT. They were, of course, searching for the Air RADAR Station at Batiga, which featured a pair of fairly powerful air search RADARs and an anti air battery which belonged to a DIM Brigade. These bombers would open the war by hopefully destroying the northern anti air presence. Behind them, six Su-24s with air to ground missiles would hit the supply depot their and the six Tunguskas stationed there.
No doubt the Air search RADAR had already picked up the Tu 95s, but they were out of the Tunguska's range, and there was very little they could do when each Bear, modified for Rodinakovan use, launched a pair of Kh-31s at the two RADARs, and although one reacted competently and switched off the RADAR, the other was hit and destroyed. However, the air search RADARs had not detected the Su-24s, which came in at low altitude and launched their AS-9s, knocking out all six Tunguskas and pulling up to come over the base with a laser guided bombing run.
"Shit, get the SAMs out, quick" Lieutenant Borsch ordered. His men quickly began to open the back of the truck as an explosion rocked the Lieutenants stance, and he turned to see another Tunguska explode in flames as they tried to hit the aircraft about to come over. As explosions ripped apart th supply depot, a young Corporal fumbled with his SA-7, trying to track a Su-24. It was to no avail, and the devastating attack was over as fast as it had came, the smoke and fires drifting off into the afternoon skies of Daranova. The Lieutenant looked around at the chaos of the supply depot, the wrecks of the anti air vehicles, the mangled and bloody corpses dangling from bombed out buildings, vehicles, or just lying decapitated on the floor.
The war had begun.
