Parliament today voted unanimously(with 13 abstentions) to add an amendment to the Constitution, making Esperanto the third official language, with English and French. Esperanto has been growing in popularity since the late Grand Archduke Kirby I sponsored it in 1975. There are now an estimated 15 million speakers and possibly several hundred thousand native speakers. The new addition will be implemented as usual with no forcing of any one language on the populace. All citizens will be required to be fluent in all three languages by the end of University, in addition to one other foreign language. The amendment was approved by Chancellor Jonas Pavlov, who called it "another step forward".
Similar proposals for adding more official languages have been tried with Hebrew, Chinese, and Russian...to no avail.
