On June 17th 1910, President Roosevelt arrives in Copenhagen on his European Tour. He is preceded by two days by the Great White Fleet, fresh from a stay in St. Petersburg. The Americans make a great show of mingling with the population and Roosevelt spends 2 days talking with state officials and touring the sights before leaving. The President is especially eager to view some of the industry funded by the United States a few years ago. However, as all good things must end, he and the American armada soon steam for Oslo, Norway on the last leg of their unprecedented excursion.

The president visited with a number of officials. The most important was the king in which re-iterated the importance of strong international relationships, such as the one being forged between the US and Denmark. To ensure world stability and as preventative medicine to deal with the disease of war.

He also got introduced to the newly appointed Prime Minister of Denmark, Klaus Berntsen, who had only been in the job for 12 days before the American President visited.

In addition to taking him on a tour of the industries formed as a result of American Aid provided when he left the 4 CP's that where being replaced with American produced Light Cruisers provided a Naval Gun Salute to farewell the president. The King, Frederik VIII, and Prime Minister Berntsen were both there to farewell him.

Hamburg, Germany, May 21, 1912 (1 week later than RL)

King Frederick the VIII of Denmark in-cognito walked along the Jungfernstieg. Suffering what was later to be called a Paralysis-attack he became faint and collapsed onto a park bench and died.

A policeman found him and took him to the nearby Hafen hospital, where he was pro-nounced dead on arrival.

A State Funeral will be held where he will be intered with other members of the Danish royal family, in Roskilde Cathedral near Copenhagen.

His son, Christian X will has taken the responsibility for the crown.

The public reaction to the Kings death is mixed, The majority beleive that as Frederick VIII was getting old and frail, as he was 69 years old, that his death was natural but there are also people that think that the death of the King was the result of an assasination, primarily with the recent bombing of Archduke Ferdinand by the Black Hand in Sarajevo.

The new King of Denmark, Christian X quietly makes approaches towards the german government asking that their secret service investigate the potential for foreign involvement in the death of Frederick VIII.

An except from an Address made by Christian C, the King of Denmark

"Danes, I come before you to announce something that has been in the works for months. The peoples of Scandinavia have long had close ties both politically, economically and socially. I am happy to announce another milestone in our relations.

Today, before the parliment, is a bill. This bill calls for the ratification of a new agreement between the nations of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. This agreement will create an organisation, the Scandinavian Regional Council.Where representatives from member nation meet together to discuss regional issues as well as make a combined stance to the International community on issues that warrant such stances."

"Together this day, Scandinavia no longer will be a region of small nations but today our voice will be combined and made so that we are heard on the international stage."

....

The SRC charter was ratified by the Danish government with little if any opposition.

In efforts to what amount internal political posturing the Danish Social Liberal Party under the leadership of Council President Carl Theodor Zahle had approached the Germans.

The Danish Road and transportation system had been upgraded to the same level as the German road system. Starting in 1909 and finished at the end of 1912. In addition to the positive view of the German people, in at least they aided the liberation of of the Finnish people. In recognition of this the Danish government had made a proposal to tie the transportation systems of Denmark's Jutland peninsula with the German road system to the south.

Meanwhile, however, the construction of a major defensive structure, a fortress, was underway in the south of the Jutland province. However Danish officials were very careful to not link the two, nor even link the fortress with Germany at all.

Ejnar Mikkelsen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ejnar_Mikkelsen), a Danish explorer had been spending quite a reasonable time preparing for an expedition for what many thought to be Greenland, however on the day he left for his expedition he announced his true intention.

On the wharf ready to depart he gave a small speech. "Greetings, today. I sail off to explore not the land of Greenland, as many of you have been led to beleive. Instead today, I, Ejnar Mikkelsen will be the first Danish explorer to reach the North Pole. On this strudy ship I will sail up into the Arctic Circle land on the Ice cap and make my way towards the the Geographical North Pole. Farewell and I'll be returning with the Danish flag flying at the North Pole."

And with that he turned and walked up the gang plank onto the ship which minutes later started on it's way to what in the end would become an ill-fated adventure.

The journey started with no sign of the bad things that would happen, infact they reached where they would drop off the exploratory team in virtually no time at all. Once the team had left it was discovered that a crucial piece of equipment had been left behind, a weapon to defend against Polar bear attack. They had other methods of dealing with the Polar Bears but the lack of a gun, any decent firearm, would start off a chain events that lead to the tragic death of a number of the exploration team.

It was expected that the team would come across at least one Polar Bear during their exploration and and infact they did come across a Polar Bear, some of the items which included the American designed Flare gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flare_gun) and other items that where thought to provide a measure of defense against Polar Bears. However the Polar Bear in which they where inevitably to come across just dodged his head out of the way and kept coming. Obviously the Polar Bear wanted something to eat.

The exploration team fled leaving the sled behind... While fleeing the explorers came upon a crevasse in the ice a narrow natural bridge was there, it had not yet collapsed. The explorers dashed across there beleiving the bear would not cross it as it obviously would not hold the weight of that monster. However the bear in pursuit knocked the sled. The issue with that is the flow of the ice from where the sled was knocked to, was down. So the sled started to gain speed as it slid down the ice towards the crevasse previously mentioned, collecting few people on it's way and head first into the crevasse. The bodies fell hard and by the time the managed to absail down the cervasse to the bottom, the Bear had lost interest at this point. All they found where the mangled bodies of 3 members of the expedition, already dead. They managed to, after a long struggle, lift the bodies out of the crevasse and with th sleds gone, containing vital equipment and food. They had no choice but to return back to the coast and live of the fish that they can catch on the coast of the Ice Shelf.

They returned to Denmark solenmly and had a memorial service for the three that had lost their lives. They where buried in the ice and snow of the Arctic. There was no grand ceremony just Ejnar Mikkelsen, the surving expedition including ship crew and families of the dead explorers. Thus where the danger's of exploring

The 4th Dutch/Danish expedition returned safely from Antarctica with naming what is presumed to be the largest mountain in Antarctica, was well received at home. Link (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12188780&postcount=252) However this success was soon over shadowed by the complete failure of the North pole expedition.. Which never returned, a rescue mission was sent but had to limp back to Denmark as it was serverly damaged by among other things a mast collapsing. A third information mission was sent, they arrived on the ice found proof of their arriving but it had been too late, all traces of where they went were gone. And so they returned back to Copenhagen with the chilling news that all had died.

In response the King had claimed the Ice Sheet for Denmark as a Burial ground and also putting a 10 year moratorium on all exploration. Link (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12188787&postcount=253)

Despite a recession, the modernisation and expansion of the Danish Naval and Army forces continues unabated with the purchase of equipment to establish and support the nations first motorised infantry corps and divisions, despite the fact that the forces are reserve the nations military is now thouroughly modern forces. However with the size of the Danish population. It is seemingly more of a mater of pride than anything else. The Social Democrats took office in 1924 and started to blame the militarisation policy of the Venstre party, the party that was previously in power.

This was the thing that pushed the Social Democrats, however pressure from the king Christian ensured that the process was completed in 1925 with the upgrading of the Garrison unit to a fortress Unit active in the Fortress in South Jutland that had been constructed.

Due to the now substantial government surplusses from the apparently endless flow of money into the Miltary halting due to the ending of the upgrade the government had substantial sums (3 pts) to re-invest into the Danish economy at a time of a time of depression, just under 1/4 of the Danish economy which relied on commerce was wiped out in 1925, The Social Democrats invested into the economy by subsidising many of Denmarks larger businesses as well as smaller ones to ensure they were able to continue to operate and keep unemployment low.
