The Dol-Enkia Confederation [FT Intro/Factbook, Open]

Dol Nar

For hundreds of years, the remains of human colonys had remained isolated and weak on over a dozen worlds spanning over thirty light years. Finally they achieved the ability to once more fly the depths of space. At first, they branched out, discovering those closest. Some fought each other. Others maintained peace. On two on these planets however, the forms of a new government was beginning to stir.

On one, the people had returned to royal families and nobility. United under their leader, a man calling himself the Grand Duke, they took the opportunity of space flight to smash their neighbors and take them into the fold. OVer the next twenty years he successfully led a campaign of treachery, diplomacy, and war to unite nine of the twenty planets under his control.

Then the Grand Duke ran into trouble. Despite his powerful fleet and despite his sharp mind, he had found an opponent he could not beat: the Dominon of Enkia. Rising from a different planet, they too had expanded. Now they controlled the other eleven colonies. Despite the seeming disparity in numbers, both were equally matched. Their fleets and resources almost even.

For ten years they battered at each other, seeking to drive the other back and conquer all. However, the Grand Duke died. His son, being wiser, younger, and heeding the voices of his people who were weary of war, he made peace with the Dominion. Together they agreed that to fight against each other any more was foolish and that together they would prove far stronger then alone. So a pact was made, swearing loyalty to each other and promising peace.

Now their eyes turn outwards, to the rest of the galaxy. They now they are strong and together they now they can conquer. Their outposts begin to push outwards and soon they may find themselves meeting their first outsiders...

History

Like the Grand Duchy of Dol Nar, the Dominion of Enkia rose from the chuman colonies, solidfying it's power and branching out across the star systems it held. The new government built fleets and went forth, convincing others to join them and conquering them when they would not.

Then, the Dominion met the Gand Duke and years of war and bloodshed ensued, men died among the stars and in the dirt of half a dozen worlds. But the war was ended, and peace was promised between the two nations. An alliance, to protect themselves form the dozens of unknown dangers that awaited them throughout the universe.

Government

The executive power of the Dominion is the Domnitor, an offical elected for life by the Dominion Senate. This senate, made of 6 representitives from each of the planets in in the Dominion vote upon and enact laws. In the case of a tie, the deciding vote is cast by the Domnitor himself.

The Senate is in turn elected by the legislature of their planets every 10 years, who are themselves elected by plebiscite every 5 years. In this way, freedoms are preserved and power is not held in succession, but a strong central government is able to exist.

Another DontPissUsOff Class Battlescruiser was exploring the vast reaches of space. Its (http://media.battlestarwiki.org/images/6/62/TOS-galac.jpg) mission (along with the 11 other ones that were built) was to explore the deep reaches of space and at the same time, be capable of kicking major booty. This was called the CNS Leonidas, a fine ship just like the others. At 810 meters long and with strange wanky technology such as industrial sized replicaters which could continually replicate its stock of nuclear missiles, it was a ship to be feared. It was even more special by the fact that it's a plot device and it's the only ship with replicators... the other ships had to reload and have supplies. Funny right?

Its weaponry also included point defense lasers that were uber powerful and could rip through capital ships and its large fighter contigent.

Its leader was Admiral Hanna Barbarra, a male (depite the name) Cassiopeian who was one of the twelve lucky ones to be chosen for this venture. He looka like a man... with a tan... and brown hair and eyes. His uniform is like that of a US Admiral and he has the hat too etc etc.

I'm sorry it's just that the author has done this sort of explanation so many times, and it feels redundant.

Then, signs of life! "Sir!" Said Johnathon, the Electronics Officer. "Scanners show signs of sentient life in this sector. I recommend we drop out of warp/hyperspace/that thing that makes us go quite fast and say hello." Now, how he knew there was sentient life is a good question... I have no idea myself but hey! It's the future!

Hanna nodded. "Excellent." He said coldly. "Drop us out and contact them, you know the drill. Say we come in peace and we wish for relations and etc etc. Screw it I'll write it and you send."

To: All Forms of Life
From: CNS Leonidas

This is the CNS Leonidas, I am Admiral Hanna Barbarra. We come in the name
of the Cassiopeian Commonwealth, we come in peace. We will await your
response.

Hannah Barbarra

Johnathon raised his right brow. "Well that's rather cold Admiral."

Hannah shrugged. "Meh, it's to the point. If anything we waste less memory." He paused. "By the way do you see any doom daggers in the area?"

Johnathon shook his head. "No sir, not at all. No errm... daggers or whatever they're called here."

Hannah sighed a breath of relief. "Good." He said. "Everytime one of those daggers come something from our side blows up. Thank Jesus they're not here. Now then, if you excuse me I'm going to listen to my Rush 2112 album, I find it quaint. Solar Federation... amusing." Indeed he did listen, and lo, he now waits for a response.

"Yessir."

he turned back to hsi viewscreen and nodded.

"Respond...."

"Commander,"

"Yesss, what isss it?" The Dril'ev hissed in respose, triggering a nervous swallow from the Commsman.

"W-We have picked up a series of transmissions coming from deep space," the man gulped, nervous of the newfound inhabitant.

The Dril'ev flushed his eyes, turning them from angry red to a cool soothing blue, which made most Vaalites calm down and be put at ease. His species had only just very recently made contact with Crimson Vaal, which in turn granted them amnesty in exchange for weapons technology. His race didn't simply give them this, however, as all operators of Dril'ev technology were by condition the only ones allowed to operate said technology. He caught himself and banished his stray thoughts. The alien looked at the transmissions, which had been promptly translated.

"Interesssting, call for a ssship to invesstigate our disscovery."

"By your command, sir," the Comm operator said simply, and started in motion another sortie for the next availible ship. The same man typed in a message. . .

Aboard the RCVF Dara'duin. Joint Dril'ev-Vaal Cruiser.

Newly promoted Fleet Master Veganov looked over his crew manifesto. Mostly Comms crew, he noted. He furrowed his brow, many of the old Vaal tactics and, as some would put, blunt and tyrannic ways of doing things had been replaced by a more subtle approach and negotiation. Obviously, the arrival of the Dril'ev was one such thing that would have almost never been considered.

Alexei felt his face fluster, he had indeed thought about leaving the Royal Navy, due to its simple: "If its an Alien, shoot it, if it doesn't die, shoot it again," method. He had confessed this to his dear friend and half-brother Kreich Sergei Vega, and the man had nodded and said: "if it requires me to tear my country apart to keep you, then so be it."

The Admiral returned to his work and counted the number of Dril'ev, nicknamed "Drills" by some. Twenty-nine aliens were to be part of this voyage. Most prominently of them was Izs'chu, a telepath that worked as a councilor. The thought of telepathy troubled Veganov, having his private thoughts monitored by something--someone, he corrected himself, that he barely knew anything about. He pushed his discomfort aside and put on a neatly fabricated smile as he walked out of his ready room and onto the shining new bridge.

"Fleet Master on the bridge!" one of the sensor operators shouted, and the room rose as one to salute their leader. This formality irritated the Admiral, but it was necessary.

"As you were," he said, releiving the stiff-necked salutes of the bridge crew.

He picked up the datapad from his command chair, and read through it. He was amused slightly, as the data on the pad matched the one that he had just read through in his ready room word for word. He skipped to the end, and looked at the engine readiness, ninety-four percent. The data was seventeen minutes old, meaning the engines were ready for his command to engage.

"Helm, prepare to enter VL-Space on my mark," he ordered, and was quickly answered by a 'yessir'.

VL-Space was a method of travel that involved extremely complex procedures to summon a portal that enveloped the ship. Veganov didn't exactly understand its finer points, but understood that the ship rode over long spacial tethers, which supposedly held the universe together. Getting there was a process that involved billions of calculations, and a more than slight bump.

"Mark."

The angry red portal materialized in front of the Dara'duin, and jet black tendrils ventured outside. The ship moved foreward and the black tendrils attracted to the engine, causing them to become locked. The protal began to close, and the black monstrosities that gripped the ship snaked back in, taking the ship into the void. A sudden lapse in the gravity caused Veganov to rise slightly from his seat, pulling against his tether buckle. The gravity came back suddenly, and the ship was rattled to the point that most would come back to their stations with bruises. The rest of the ride was calm, and in seven hours, the ship had reached its destination.

Alexei Veganov stood from his chair, and ordered a voice and visual transmission while the area was being scanned. He smoothed over invisible creases in his dark gray uniform, and shined the gleaming image of a Scorpion on his Fleet Master's medallion. The screen snapped on, and he began the customary speech for first contact missions.

This is Fleet Master Alexei Veganov of the Crimson Vaal ship, the RCVF Dara'duin. We humbly request that our peoples will be able to communicate in peaceful manner, and remind you that though our ship is armed, we have not come looking for fighting. We await reply. Veganov, out.

Bridge of the RSS Imperator, Phoenix-class Duchy cruiser

Lord-Captain Sir Edvers Jilto, Knight of the Order of the Blazing Sun, Heir to the Throne of Arrit was enjoying his usual afternoon tea break in his ready room while looking over some status reports. The Imperator was en route to Neue Duestchland to reinforce the Confederation forces there in case the aliens turned out to be hostile. They had just dropped out of jump space and were preparing for a reorientation and new navigation information so as to avoid running straight through a major trade route and getting themselves splattered.

His console beeped and he irritably reached over and tapped the button, "Yes?"

His sensors and communications officer, Midshipman Lios spoke, his voice excited. "Lord-Captain, I would suggest you come to the bridge immediatley. We've detected an unknown ship jumping in system and we've recieved a message in both visual and auditory range."

"Give me a playback. I'll be on the bridge in a moment."

"Yes, Lord-Captain."

Edvers straightened his black uniform tunic as he watched the playback, toying idly with a bit of the scarlet piping. With a sigh he set his tea to one side and strode out the door and onto the bridge. He resumed his seat in the captain's chair.

"Begin transmitting."

"Aye sir. Channel open."

Imperator[/i]]
This is the RSS Imperator of the Grand Duchy of Dol Nar. We greet you in peace, Dara'duin. We would be honored to intiate first contact between our peoples.

As the transmission cut off he turned to look at his bridge crew, "I think we'd better get some diplomats to...What's our closest planet? Sierra? Well, inform the Court."

The crew hurried to obey.

Hannah saw all the foreign ships approach his, the Vaal ship was quite interesting since... they were Vaal, they were foreign, and they would probably to be able to kick his booty. "... crap." He says. "We're dealing with things that not even random smart people can understand, no we're dealing with... craziness. We must ask for peace, nao."

To: All Ships in the Area
From: CNS Leonidas

We are confused. I would like to know why there are three different kinds of
ships in the area, but two of the ships share remarkable similarities. We want
peaceful diplomacy either way.

"You know." Commander Bob said, who was like the 1st Mate basically. "This seems like an easy assignment me thinks. Nobody's trying to kill us, nobody's threatening us. Nope... peace. I don't like this, I don't trust this. Because every single time the Commonwealth so far as found new life something blows up, and well Admiral with all due respect, I want to blow something up."

Hannah looked at him. "And you wonder why I'm the Admiral?"

Bob mumbled random things. "Look you. I'll get my own battlecruiser. And we're gonna find foreign races that hate us and blow them up and colonize their worlds, and then I shall dance in space... naked!"

Hannah smiled coldly. "Bob as much as we all want to dance in space naked, we just can't blow up stuff. Nope, these are peaceful folk. Either way I'm not complaining. We'll just have to wait."

Aboard the RCVF Dara’duin, Commander's Quarters

Fleet Master Veganov looked at both the translated text on his ‘pad, and the original communication. Attempting to learn something about the language, he studied them carefully. Two transmissions had been picked up, one from the now identified RSS Imperator, and the other from a CNS Leonidas. The first transmission had been one of hope and confidence, while the latter seemed hopelessly confused. Veganov brooded over his options, the ship representing Cassiopeia could prove to be a threat, as ships flying that flag had usually proven hostile. Veganov also thought that they had been destroyed in a titanic war, but intel was also quite awful when it came to space travel.

He thought about the situation, calling upon his experience and training; he could either send a shuttle with an unknown diplomat, go in a shuttle himself with a guard, or have unknown peoples aboard his ship. The last thought didn’t pull much appeal from the Admiral. He ambled over to the view port, and looked down the length of the ship, and tested his knowledge, he guessed the length at two kilometers. He looked over at the ship schematic on the wall, which read the ship as 1.852 kilometers long. No luck this time, I serve on too many ships I think. The Dara'duin was a smaller ship compared to the titans that had been part of his old command. Changes had led to the recycling of these massive, and beautiful juggernauts.

Veganov decided that if it was requested, he would harbor diplomats on his ship. But Veganov would definitely prefer to go to the other ship and gain a perspective on its capabilities and possibly its defenses, just in case. He looked down at his heavy sidearm; it was also possible any meeting could be a trap and he'd get himself killed. The Dol Nar had said they were peaceful, but in Alexei’s experience, that meant next to nothing. He readied a response to the Dol Nar, and another to the Cassiopeian ship.

To: The RSS Imperator
From: The RCVF Dara'duin, Fleet Master Veganov

We are willing to engage in diplomatic meeting, perhaps we can arrange a meeting on your ship. I am afraid that my ship may prove unsuitable for such purposes. We await reply.

Veganov hated lying with a passion, but maybe his transmission might get him the situation he wished. "Choose your battlefield," was the military's motto for strategy, and he always tried to follow it. He sighed, and touched the Comm button again.

To: CNS Leonidas
From: The RCVF Dara'duin, Fleet Master Veganov

Our mission is to initiate first contact with Dol Nar, the Crimson Vaal Navy has encountered ships with similar markings to your own. In our experience, Cassiopeia has proven hostile on more than one occaision. Note that we shall be monitoring you closely. Any hostile acts will be dealt with swiftly and will prove fatal to the agressor. Veganov, out.

Veganov touched the red button, sending both messages, then slumped in his chair. He cracked a smile, the Admiral had put on a harsh tone for the second transmission, and had made sure that the Dol Nar could pick it up if they so chose. Perhaps both could discern that the Vaalites meant business, and if kicked, the proverbial flying Scorpion hive would explode and dish out a serious dose of pain.

I like to keep history together, plus it adds depth to stories by recounting what happened in old ones. TCG picked one too many fights I think, and was then brutally destroyed. If I were you, I'd want to make good on that history, and bring whatever shattered remnants of him back. Good history comes from good RPs. By instinct I used past RPs to add more depth to my story, but if you REALLY want me to change it, then I will.

Bridge of the Imperator

Midshipman Lios turned back to the Lord-Captain, "Sir, we have picked up two transmissions. One is directed at us. The other is apparently directed at the second alien ship. They should be paying on your console now sir."

Edvers listned to both messages, nodding thoughtfully. I could be the one in Dol Nar history to intiate first contact with an alien race. And it owuld be incredibly interesting to meet them face to face. But these "Casseopians" sound dangerous. Then again, the other ship could be lying because they just don't like them.

He tapped another button, bringing up what the sensor scans of the two other ships had shown. The Cassoepian was smaller then his, only about 850 meters long compared to his nearly 1.1 kilometers. The other was about a third larger then his. Both would probably present problems in a fight.

After another moment of contemplation he looked over at Lios, "Send two messages...And helm, keep your distance for now. We can't be sure what they're going to do. Mr. Johansen! Tell the marines to prepare to recieve honored dignitaries, the entire red carpet treatment. Drress uniforms, the lot."

A chorus of "Aye, sirs." Greeted his commands.

Its not terribly important, but I'm not about ready to have a war right now either. My men view you with suspicion, not the urge to blast you. You can start anew, that's fine, as my nation does not know IC'ly what happened to TCG. You can always give another series of events that can put you where you are now. CV only encountered TCG once or twice, and that's what I worked with. I just want to make this RP interesting, not just the "we want allies, send us soldiers when we are in trouble," type of thing.

Abaord the RCVF Dara'duin, Hangar Bay 2

Fleet Master Veganov strolled into the hangar with his freshly washed and smoothed dress uniform. It showed all of his medals that he had won over the years, which numbered at twenty-six, as well as his four-star rank status and numerous campaign flags. He ran his fingers through his short, silver-streaked hair while he looked over the volunteers for the mission. Two-dozen soldiers had shown up, including two of the new USTAD-IV SuperSoldiers.

He looked the USTADs, who were both clones under their bulky armor. The main blast sheild extended from their mid-torso and wrapped up over their face to end on the back of their neck which gave them a faceless look. The Admiral chose one of these soldiers, TH-657, and hand picked four other "standard" soldiers. The group maneuvered behind Veganov's lead and followed onto the shuttle. The hangar quickly cleared and the shuttle was launched into space.

After a short trip, the shuttle maneuvered into what appeared to be where the Dol Nar wished the shuttle to go. Running lights winked next to the open bay and motioned them inside. The shuttle touched down, and Veganov with his entourage in tow, moved outside.

The Fleet Master stepped off of the laning ramp and onto a red carpet, which triggered a slight chuckle. Both Veganov and the USTAD soldier looked back, and the ruffian shrank back in terror. He noted a cluster of people in the hangar, and walked towards them.

The relative silence of the bay was broken by a bosun's whistle, piping the admiral and his party aboard. Standing at the end of the carpet in their dress uniforms, Edvers and his senior officers saluted.

"Marines! Pre-sent...ARMS!"

A phalanx of marines stood off to one side. In one motion they presented arms and held it for a count of ten before returning to attention.

As the admiral's party approached the end of the carpet, Edvers stepped forward, bowing politely from the waist. "On behalf of the Grand Duchy of Dol Nar, welcome aboard the RSS Imperator."

The burst of sound from some sort of instrument pervaded the relative silence that had once been the hangar bay. After a quick order from an officer, the soldiers standing quickly presented arms. This triggered a knee-jerk reaction from one soldier, who raised his weapon into a firing position. A swift slap on the back of his helmet and a curse uttered by a fellow made the man go back into a peaceful frame of mind, and he resumed his former position.

As Fleet Master Veganov approached looked the other Leader in the eye, sizing him up. He said something grand in his language, which triggered a beep from a machine that hung over the Admiral's shoulder. The Universal Translator, nicknamed the "Squawk" was used in such cases when language was an issue in face-to-face communication. After quickly analyzing the thought patterns of a person, it found meaning and translated into the language of the user. It was on occaision very wrong, but the machine's translation was one that Veganov expected. He didn't change his expression and his face showed zero reaction. His expression was one which he had carefully constructed to be neither hopeful nor threatening, it was a skill taught at the Academy to make sure that officers did not give their intentions away.

"It is a pleasure to meet von such as yourself in person, I am Fleet Master Alexei Veganov," he greeted in his deep voice. "We thank you for hospitality," he added. The Squawk beeped in response and played back the Fleet Master's statements, Alexei winced at the awful but understandable quality.

Veganov noted that his ArmSuit-clad guards had exchanged nods of respect from the other shipboard soldiers. He also saw that the USTAD soldier stood deadly still, his right hand twitching near his sidearm. Veganov made an inconspicuos wave of his hand, triggering a calm reaction from the USTAD, who had caught the I can handle this gesture.

Edvers' quietly looked over Veganov as his greeting was translated into whatever language it was they spoke. Lots of medals... he thought quietly, He must be important.

He also made note of the armored and unarmored escorts that his counterpart had seen fit to bring along. They looked quite capable and would probably be tough to handle in a fight. Luckily, he didn't intend on fighting.

A moment later a slightly garbled translation came back. The digintary announced himself as Fleet Master Veganov. So, he was very important.

The Vaalite peoples are human, a bit taller maybe, but still grade-A humans. The Dril'ev, however, are alien and look similar to this (http://www.hlcomic.com/cast/vort.jpg), just with two eyes and no middle arm and don't shoot green lightning out of their ass.

Veganov eyed the other as he spoke. He couldn't detect any hostile intent, which seemed odd, as most diplomatic negotiations that he had attended would have already erupted into a firefight and dubbed "agressive and fatal negotiations". He fought the urge to smile and kept his face neutral. The other, who seemed to be either a Ship Master or Fleet Master, ended his sentence and the Squawk went to work. A moment or two of uncomfortable silence gave way to the translation. The man identified himself as a Lord-Captain, a part of a feudal system? It seemed odd how such old ways could still be used in the era of technology. "To each his own," as the saying went. The second part of the translation is what Veganov had hoped for. Courtesy usually meant temporary quarters, and a tour of the ship was also a prime possibility.

Veganov didn't extend his hand for a shake, as one unfortunate diplomat had done in a report he had read on the first contact reports from the Dril'ev encounter. The man had had both of his arms brutally torn off and had been shot seven times before he could even react. All Dril'ev were greeted with a nod, as they viewed "needless touching" as hostile and as a sexual advance. Disipline is what kept things in order, and Veganov waited for newfound beings to make the first move when it came to face-to-face greetings.

"I thank you, Lord Jilto, I am pleased that we can pursue peaceful meetings. But, why do we stand here? I am eager to share tales and get a perspective on your culture," he said, putting on a small smile.

Edvers laughed, a smile brightening his face. "Of course, of course. Please follow me." He turned, his staff falling in behind him. He paused for a moment, waiting for Veganov to fall in beside him. "That translator is a very useful piece of technology. Unfortunately, we haven't developed anything like it yet."

As they set off, the marines disperesed, although four of them fell in as an honor guard. He led the way through a large blast door, obviously designed to seal itself off in the event of a catastrophic loss of pressure on the hangar deck. A few moments alter they were in a large elevator, heading upwards. "I'd like to show you the observation deck first and serve some refreshments. From there we can go to the bridge, if you like."

Veganov was slightly amused when the man had laughed and blown all sense of neutrality to the meeting. Perhaps the Fleet Master was too glum, or he was distracted by leaving his family. In either case, he would keep his composure and hopefully gain an ally for later use. He followed the Lord down to a large blast door, which resembled the one used for the bridge of Vaalite ships. The man had complemented on the Universal Translator, which his countrymen had not yet developed. He would make an offer later, after he had properly discoursed with the Captain. What dumbfounded the Admiral was the fact that the other had suggested a tour of the bridge, the brain of the entire ship. If Veganov's forces had indeed been hostile to the Dol Nar, it would have probably cost them this ship.

Four of the original guard complement had fallen in behind Veganov's group, which put his soldiers on edge. His men were disiplined but the notion left them uncofortable nontheless. Soon they were in an elevator, and they emerged onto the observation deck. Serveral tables had already been set up, covered in all sorts of delicious-looking fruits and sweets. His men moved for the table, examining the foods arranged on it's surface. One man picked up a likely-looking fruit and held it up to his face.

"Remember the Academy's number one rule: always eat your vegetables," he joked, triggering a laugh from his compatriots as he popped it into his mouth and chewed.

The USTAD soldier did not join the others, and instead took up a position by the door to watch over the room. The Fleet Master had always wondered if the USTAD had any emotions, if they did, they certainly did not show it. The clone that he had chosen had killed a drill instructor during initial training, no small feat for a person that had been four years old at the time. He felt for the soldier, but the service waited for no one.

He focussed his attention back onto Jilto, and he looked for a seat.

Edvers took a seat, motioning for everyone else to do the same. His staff sat, chatting and laughing quietly while waiting for their guests. several of them looked like they might atttempt to mingle, but the language barrier seemed to effectively prevent that. The marines took up unobtrusive positions in the room, two near the door and the other two by the observation window.

Outside the stars gleamed in the distance. Eders contemplated his visitors quietly as one made some sort of joke in his language and the others laughed. It was curious to be the one to make first contact. He realized that if they were hostile, inviting them to the bridge wouldn't be the best idea...But he did have an entire ship at his disposal versus a small party. Just to be on the safe side he decided he would have the controls temporarily shunted to the auxiliary bridge while their guests were there.

He sipped at the glass of chilled water left for him, "Fleet Master, would you and your men like something to drink? We have juices, wines, water...We're very well-supplied."

Alexei watched as the other man spoke, and waited for the Squawk to get him his translation. It seemed odd that a simple ship on border patrol would be as well-supplied as the Lord claimed, but perhaps that ws the way of things here. The offer of drinks was a welcome gesture, but Veganov had something else in mind. He reached down to his canteen, which he had secretly filled with Vaalka, an extremely strong but barely alcoholic drink that was favoured by soldiers and navymen. The content sat around a half percent, so the drink was all taste and no headaches. He popped off the lid and poured the clear liquid into two free glasses, and handed one to Jilto.

"Try this, you may find it interesting," he said, taking a long sip from his glass.

Edvers nodded in thanks as the reply was translated and took a sip of his glass. He smiled slightly and took another, "This is very good."

He nocholantly snagged a bit of fruit from one of the plates and munched on it for a moment before swallowing. "So, what brings you to our little corner of space?"

Alexei Veganov regarded the man as he ate, and measured his interested tone. Veganov listened to the translation. Why had he come here? Surely this man knew of the transmission that was sent. He sipped his drink and considered his response for a moment. From what the Admiral had gathered, the man he spoke to now was part of a dual alliance, it was possible one had sent the message without the other knowing. Political instability wasn't exactly a strong point in an alliance, this realization turned Veganov's slightly good mood into a dull and unfeeling one.

"A Vaalite listening post recieved transmission from this sector, which was beleived to be uninhabited. My ship was plotted to investigate this end and to make possible first contact. Were you informed of such a transmission?" Veganov asked in a deep but careful manner.

Edvers was now in a fine mood. The drink that Veganov had provided him with, along with the food and the fact that he was making first contact were all making him feel incredibly pleased with himself. As he waited for the alien's remarks to be translated he munched on a few pieces of fruit.

He nodded slowly in understanding, "Oh, yes. We had heard about a transmission. We were on our way to reinforce one of our ally's planets in case the aliens turned out to be hostile. We'd already encountered the Casseopian ship, but we weren't sure what was going to happen. The Grand Duke and the Dominion will be very pleased to hear that you're friendly."

Fleet Master Veganov sipped his drink and listened to the other man speak. The other seemed very pleased with himself, while Veganov appeared bored. He gulped down the rest of his drink and wondered where this little chat was going. He seemed nice enough, but his amicable attitude floored the experience-grizzled Admiral. He had never encountered one with such a cheerful outlook, especially in a navy. He glanced at his chrono, which displayed the time. His preliminary report of the aliens was due in half an hour, and it seemed that he needed to work on it.

"It seems I have to leave for my ship, I am sorry," Veganov said, he motioned for his men to form up. "I have enjoyed my stay, but I must prepare a report on our meeting. I bid you well."

Edvers stood, nodding his assent. His staff followed suit, watching quietly. "Very well. I'm sorry to see you leave so soon. I do believe, however, that I can get my government to send a diplomat out here. Regardless, please, remain in touch. I'll escort you back to you ship."

Why did the other seem so bored? First contact was supposed to be exciting and new, wasn't it? After all, the first real aliens they had come in contact with. Not just other colonists.

Fleet Master Veganov left the Observation deck by means of the elevator, cloely followed by his guards. The other Captain went as well, living up to his promise of escort. It pained the Admiral that he had to leave so soon, but it would be his behind in the frying pan if he didn't get that report to Command. The trip to the hangar was quite uneventful, and they emerged into the hangar bay without a single incident. Veganov turned when he reached the loading ramp of his shuttle. He cracked a smile and switched off the Squawk, displaying clearly how the machine was operated by a simple switch. He handed the box-like device to the Captain, and offered a farewell gesture.

"Kto smeet, pobeda," he quoted. Who dares, wins.

Edvers accepted the Squawk with a slightly awed expression on his face, "Thank you, sir. I...I'm afraid I do not have anything to give in return for this gift, but I will do my best to have something on our next meeting." With a friendly smile, he extended his hand slowly, hoping they had the same tradition of hsaking hands and that he wasn't about to get fragged.
