Nation Name: Nation of Tanal
Inhabitants: Humans 81%, gnomes 12%, hobgoblins 7%, others 1%.
Population: 200,000.
History: Tanal's current government stems from a small theocratic state that possessed a secret weapon - an oracle of Gond, god of craftsmen. Gond provided them with technological secrets (at the time, mainly metallurgy), which enabled them to defeat their foes through superior weaponry. It wasn't long before every other tribe on the islands had either willingly joined or had been conquered.
About 100 years ago, Tanal recieved an extraordinary secret - firepowder. This was used first to create catapults that hurled bombs at enemies, and shortly thereafter was used to create new weapons - muskets, cannons, and pistols.
The next development, twenty years later, was not of divine origin, but was the invention of an adventurer and artisan named Midoc, who invented the rifle. By increasing accuracy, this increased the range of Tanali firearms dramatically. The Midoc rifle soon became the standard weapon of the Tanali military.
Sixty years afterwards, Midoc's granddaughter Cerra went a few steps further with the carbine, or repeating rifle. By adapting the reloading system of the repeating crossbow to firearms, Cerra dramatically increased the firing rate of Tanali weapons.
The Tanali also possess other forms of wondrous machinery. The one area they are deficient in is steam, due to a lack of coal deposits. The Tanali do have other sources of fuel, mostly alchemical in origin - the Tanali are also master alchemists.
