Fate sides with pragmatism (open FT intro)

OOC: The idea is you arrive in system (a routine survey or colony ship or something) and discover me and the planet, then choose how to involve yourself. Incidently, this is Hammer's Slammers tech.

IC: The ship was completely unescorted, and was an unarmed freighter in any case, with the exception of a couple of nukes intended for some mild ortillery support. No one was expecting an encounter with a fighting ship, rare things indeed in the gorund-centric wars of the 30th century. Aboard were a few close support satellites for signals and sensor work and several Obadiah II class armoured battalion landing boats.

For this ship, merchant as it may have once been, was carrying the Second Friesland Armoured Cavalry Regiment, "Hell's Dragoons". Colonel Buskirk, as anxious as any of his men, indeed as any ACR trooper, to get out from under the shadow of the president's personal "Slammers" regiment, had enthusiastically volunteered his unit for the mission.

It was politically and tactically something of a special case: in the wake of a humoungous invasion, the Bwyrmin confederacy had found itself as shattered as the Shavi empire it had destroyed, and now numerous conventional and guerilla militaries were attempting to carve out a place for their ideologies in the emerging new world order. This made it an excellent proving ground for the mercenaries, who had been hired out by the fascist nation of Arathan, properly the United Territories of Arathan and Kahndia.

And mercenaries they were, whether or not they flew their homeworld's banner off their tanks and combat cars.

"Attention all dragoons, we are now preparing for immediate insertion. This is likely to be a hot LZ for second squadron. Other squadrons will make passive landings."

Private Andries Devenpeck hefted his powergun and joined his platoon as they marched in step towards second squadron's boat. His powergun, very light for a 20mm weapon, was slung over his shoulder, and he wore a cast iridium breastplate painted in mottled forest camouflage, displaying his unit insignia on the shoulders and the tabs for his pain-killing and coagulation agents on the chest.

Behind him, the ramp slammed shut. Ahead of the boat, the hangar opened.

"All dragoons, ensure your safety catch is on for atmospheric entry. Good luck."

The dark form of the unmanned destroyer WRATHCHILD slunk deeper into the system, investigating the appearance of light nuclear devices on this unarmed vessel. He would watch, and wait, and when the time was right, contact the organics in question. Their reactionbs would say much about their intentions to the Solari, and WRATHCHILD himself.

coms to wrathchild sephrion forces are taking this planet

Designate nature of occupation./directive Comply or be engaged./threat

Why does ity seem like every time I show up somewhere a fool wants to take over the planet? WRATHCHILD was upset. He had a pair of conflicting directives, defend himself, and to avoid combat. Since self defense was an alpha class directive and avoiding action was not, then the only reasonable course of action was to engage the Sephrions, eliminate the threat they posed, and contact the natives. If he was unable to eliminate them, reinforcements would need to be requisitioned. It was an unpleasant situation...

OOC: This isn't a space RP, so please don't mess around with the transport if at all possible. If you must, you can sink it when all the dragoons are on the surface. And Meihm/SL, if you can detect the heavy orbital nukes, you can probably also sense the artillery "red pills".

IC: "Colonel! the captain says there's another ship in system, which has just launched some kind of light landing system."

Buskirk pivoted from the tactical display on his boat to the aide as he had learned to gunning for a combat car.

"Where!"

"Territory of the commies."

The officer relaxed slightly.

"Must be more mercenaries. Good, we can't eactly make a reputation fighting solid shot assault rifles and tracked vehicles."

"No, sir."

"It was rhetoricle. What does intel teach you these days?"

"Sorry, sir."

The skirmish band was a classic of its type. A current observer with any knowledge of military history would doubtlessly think of the Viet-Cong in a climate that was temperate... and even more hostile.

"Yeeshrala?"

One, distinguished as an leader officer by his torn "uniform", elbowed over to the speaker, and saw the twelve Sephriothan troops in the valley.

"Naktura. Kehaka getasang."

They had been told of warriors from the sky, hired by the murdering Arathan bastards. But they had been told of little fortresses descending from the sky, not these manned missiles. And they had been told of tanks that flew above the ground.

Still, who else could it be? Aliens? The mere thought was laughable.

He dropped his hand, and the valley, along with several other ambush sites nearby, became a hell of whizzing bullets, thumping grenades and shooping mortars.

The minute their boat had hit the ground, second squadron flipped off their safety catches and fired their vehicles up to about half a meter from the floor. Andries stood at one of the three 30mm triple gatlings that formed the armament of his combat car, preparing to sweep his firezone clean as he exited the Obadiah.

First came the tanks. There were 17 in the squadron, each with a crew or three of four. They packed the dreaded 200mm powergun, with a shortened 20mm gatling for local, air, and missile defense. It was their job to eliminate anything that looked tough enough to crack the lighter vehcles: combat cars and skimmer infantry would then move in to root the foe out of his fortifications.

The enemy lacked space-borne sensors, meaing they had had no way to know that one of their division parks was about to be ravaged by a mere battalion of off-worlders. Tanks and APCs were blown away as the combat cars roared through barracks, leaving a trail of corpses. Infantry swiftly stormed depots and HQs, snatching the more senior officers and useful equipment and giving the junior personell a powergun burst.

They were at the sharp end, but they were holding the knife.

OOC: WRATHCHILD is basically gonna try and kill Seph, then talk to you guys. Since you have no intentions of attacking me in space, it won't turn into a spacebased curbstomp.

IC:

Request further directives. Sephrion forces present./query

Contact and warn natives, first noted vessel. Sephrions are noted hostiles. Do not engage unless hostilities originate with them./directive

Will comply./aceptance End query./close channel

WRATHCHILD pondered his new order. Contact the other vessel. Seemed easy enough.

This is the Solari unmanned combat unit WRATHCHILD. Your resence is known to us. Hostile forces of a nation we are familiar with have landed upon the planet in small numbers. They will attempt to engage you in combat. Their numerical inferiority should make them easily defeated. If you are unable to defeat them I will supply several combat remotes to aid you.

Buskirk grabbed the urgently buzzing communicator.

"Aliens! Have you gone coping insane!"

A young signaller looked up from the cable she was laying.

"Sir, we've seen them before, Is it really impossible another group has developed space travel?"

The colonel's breathing began to return to normal.

"Point, corporal. Play this message.

He listened, too shocked to speak.

"Alien invaders! Via! Well, those pods didn't look big enough for more than a jeep. Intel, bring up your best guess on enemy drop zones."

He scanned the display, then turned back to the signals corporal.

"Thank the Wrathchild, and order first squadron to organise an all-arms troop task force with a dedicated artillery section in support. Full ammo authority: they can use all the NBC stuff they like. I want second moving to sever the enemy supply lines around river 98, third linking up with Arathan IX corps, and fourth moving northeast to link up and attack the enemy airbase here."

He stabbed at the hologram.

"The remaainder of first is to form a reserve, HQ squadron elements to be attached as needed."

Captain Faas Comstock surveyed casualties among the task force he had been assigned. There were two of his own CC platoons, plus attached tank and infantry platoons, an engineer squad, an intel squad, an artillery section, and a smattering of medics. Currently, they were rolling north, with a satellite sensor pack slaved to their displays: the targets were obvious. It was the commies everyone was worrying about.

The stole rapidly through the forest, leaving destruction in their wake: bunkers gutted with ground penetrators and cleaned out by gatlings, pockmarked ground left by mine clearing nets, rings of charred ground from artillery strikes... and the occasional fried guerilla.

OOC: Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you already said your troops disembarked in your first post. And several of your squads are under fire from commie guerillas.

IC: Moments before, the cargo airlock had buzzed with activity. Now, it was empty, except for the pair of primed nukes. As repressurisation completed, they were guided out into space but arms which then shrank back into the hull, as the ship reserved quickly to excape the enemy... and its own weapons as they sprang to life, hurtling towards the Seprioth ship at an insane speed,

Down on the surface, things were going well. Extensive artillery preperation from the crude Arathan howitzers combined with local regiments covering the flanks and securing choke points was allowing IX corps to roll almost unimpeded through communist territory, third squadron at the head, while second and fourth had linked up and sacked an airbase threatening the corps operation. But not the dragoons. There tanks were fitted with satellite linked computer-slavable gatling capable of blasting whole squadrons out of the sky. Indeed, this function was almost as crucial as their anti-tank role.

But the real action was about to start as Faas's troop thundered into the clearing where the first drop pod had landed, spearheaded by the tanks. All four 200mm powerguns put a shot into the pod itself, while gatlings swept round through the infantry. CCs followed behind, their guncrew ready to smoke out the enmy with grenades and massarce him. The other elements were kept back until the were needed.

OOC: I'm assuming you're firing at the transport.

IC: Beams of energy neatly diced through the unshielded ship, tearing it apart. Doubtless a survey teams would soon investigate, but for now, there was nothing but the fragments cooling into strange and twisted shapes as they glided through the emptiness.

But on the ground, the enemy would be the one having problems. The communists were rapidly yielding to Arathan air superiority and the seeminly unstoppable off-worlder equipment, so the troops pouring into their domain toook the oppurtunity to locate (and destroy) ambush sites, set up fire-bases, and sieze the major population centres.

Comstock's tanks pumped a full burst of plasma fire each into the surprisingly resiliant pods as a section of two CCs left to innvestigate the next drop-zone. They veered away from the sounds of gunfire, requesting infantry recon for safety, and headed for the next, on the muddy bank of a little river, tri-barrels begining to spin, ready to neatly dis-embowel any more infantry with their streams of blue pellets.

The ship muttered to itself in that vein for several minutes, as it brought its massive gun batteries online.

I regret to inform you that your vessel in orbit has been destroyed. The Sephrion ship has made a great effort to eliminate any route for you off of this planet. If you will fall back from the drop pods I will provide orbital support, and prevent the ship from causing any more mischief. Oh bloody hell, this is annoying.

The CNS Hephestian was one of the new battlecruisers (http://media.battlestarwiki.org/images/6/62/TOS-galac.jpg) built for deep space exploration. It was a wonderful wessel (yes wessel) with all sorts of advanced technology. Like replicators (especially industrial sized once that can keep making missiles), point defense lasers whose strength could be modified, and nukes. Lots and lots of nukes. Of course this battlecruiser is more a plot device if anything else. Nevertheless I'll give it stats when it starts blowing up stuff and whatnot. Its leader was a Ms. Admiral Jane Freeway. One of the few (if only) high ranking females in the Navy.

She was a brunette with short hair, her eyes were brown and like most Cassiopeians had an intense tan from living in Rosanica. She was calm and collected, and also quite patient as most Admirals were. Yet, she always had a bit of bloodlist, especially against any imperials. She heard the stories, she found them annoying.

She looked at the main screen thing (which was probably a plasma LED) and saw the situation. Big planet, lots of shooting, an unknown ship, and a Sephrion ship... or pieces of a ship. She sighed. She knew of their reputation of mindless warriors with no tactical forsight.

Or at least that's what Harrison said at the lecture in the Academy.

She looked at her Electronics Officer. "Johnson" For lo that was his name. "Scan the surface. Let's see what's going on down there."

He scanned the surface using God knows what, because I don't. "It appears to be a battle. It looks like there are Sephrion soldiers down there attacking an unknown people."

Jane rubbed her chin. "Well it can't be them putting down a colonial insurrection, we're not in the Empire. It can't be war because the HoloNet would be screaming it, I assume it's an invasion. Then again the war might just be starting now and they started it and not the Sephrions... for once."

She looked at her Communications Officer. "Uhura." For lo that is her name and it has no relation to the black one. "Open communications with all the ships here. I want to know what's going on. Go to Yellow Alert and ready all weapons to be fired on whoever is the idiot here. If it's the Sephrions at least we can be ready."

To: All Lifeforms in the Area
From: CNS Hephestian

Hello there. I am Admiral Jane Freeway of the CNS Hephestian. We are a
battlecruiser who travels space looking for new lifeforms to make peace with.
We would like to know why there is a Sephrion vessel in the area, why there
is a battle going on in the ground, and who the hell is the unknown ship. If
you could answer this we'll be quite grateful.

Yours,

Jane Freeway
Admiral of the CNS Hephestian

Jane rolled her eyes. "How much do you wanna bet that it's the Sephrions that started this mess?"

Johnson chuckled. "I'd bet my left arm Admiral."

Jane leaned into her chair. "So would I John, so would I..."

Jane started reading through the transcripts. She raged with anger, another case of imperialism. "Oh come on!" She shouted. "So it is the Sephrions, and they are attacking, and it is a semi peaceful race down there. Fighting the communists or whatever they're called. Well then, it looks like we'll either have to play Arbiter or people who blow up stuff."

She pointed at the screen. "Contact the Sephrions, we're gonna try to stop this."

Tanks moved from site to site, pouring savage amounts of fire into the pods and letting CCs slaughter the dismounts in their wake.

The officer in charge of the guerillas' parent brigade, meanwhile, had concluded that the other off-worlder troops must obviously be a secong merc unit, hired by a third faction opposed to both Reds and Blacks, perhaps the Bwyrmin? Yes, the Bwyrmin, they would need something to compensate for their losses in Shav.

As such, he decided to send the remaining companies of the nearby battalion to finish both the invaders.

Several vehicles were already burning while buzz-bombs, grenades, mines, and shrapnel from the unpleasently close friendly arty were silencing anyone who didn't take shelter. For the Sephriothans it would likely be worse.

Buskirk contemplated the offer. It seemed tempting: the ship could apparently detect organic life, which would rob the communists of their one advantage: stealth. Bases could easily be located, bombarded, and stormed, patrols detected and slaughtered. It wouldn't take more than a week to fulfill his contract, which ordered him to assist the Arathan army and air force in securing cities and the supply lines between and destroying major focal points of the Red guerillas, neutralising their ability to make war.

In the end, they decided that they needed mercs of their own.

Meanwhile, another Frieslander ship had jumped in, and was picking up the Obadiahs as they ascended to off the surface. The dragoons were done.

IC: "Sephriothan fleet, the money is being transmitted."

Buskirk sighed. What now?

"Yes, we do. What of it?"

OOC: I know you have MSN Fries, get online sometime today. If you need my address, it's Pmmiehm@hotmail.com

IC:

That changed quickly. What to do now... I'm too lazy to really make an effort to deal with those Sephrions on my own... Maybe backup would be fun. Or maybe I'll just talk to the Frieslanders and see if we can't buy their assistance...

Friesland troopers, you require transport away from this planet. I am willing to provide that transportation, in exchange for the opportunity to secure a contract with your leaders.

Jane saw as the massive Fleet of Doom(TM) warped outside the Friesland Colony. She sighed as the screen filled up with ships that could probably be beaten by a Cassiopeian Fleet. Too bad they didn't have one."Oy..." She said to herself. "Tell me, how many ships are out there?"

A random Ensign answered her. "About five hundred Admiral, a bit of a problem for us."

She stroked her chin. "Quite." She paused. "Put in a call for backup... well, possible backup. Whether they're willing to go into this hellhole is a question I can't answer. But we can play a game of brinksmanship."

Johnson looked at her. "...what?"

She leaned into her seat. "The Sephrions are not tough people. They merely have a large ego. They can't stand being challenged. We also have a Non Agression Pact with them and the memory of their defeats by our hand still haunts them. Harrison's hand in specific..." She smirked.

Johnson looked at her scared. "What are you planning?"

"Well..." She said. "I'm sure the threat of Harrison leading a force to in to destroy this fleet will put the fear of God into them. Uhura, open communications. And make it open."

Uhura sighed and did so. "Admiral I sure hope you know what you're doing."

She started to send her message via video, sitting in her chair while her crew operated the ship. She seemd serious, and stuff. "Sephrion fleet this is the CNS Hephestian, we do not tolerate this blatant imperialism. You will leave the Governments of this Colony alone. We have contacted the Cassiopeian Navy for backup and there is a fleet here on its way."

Johnson swallowed his spit. I hope anyway. He thought to himself.

Jane continued. "It will be led by Grand Admiral Harrison, do you remember him? He beat your fleet with no casualties, granted in a wargame. But do you want to risk that in a real situation? Maybe you should call for more back up." She smirked. "Oh wait, isn't that about half your Navy...? Why I believe it is, last I heard anyway. Maybe I'm wrong, I could be. I never said I was perfect."

Uhura's brow started to sweat. This nigga crazy! She thought to herself.

Jane finished. "Attack us, and you will feel the brunt of Cassiopeian justice on your homeland. Leave, and no harm will fall to you. We will be waiting for a response." She finished.

Johnson raised her right brow. "Brilliant. You will either go down as a tactical genius or as an idiot."

Jane fell into her chair. "Don't remind me I'm (EXPLICIT WORD) myself."

Uhura sighed. "Let's just hope that the Fleet does come."

If any attempts are made to impede your egress, it will be dealt with firmly and swiftly. I am but one vessel, but there are only ten of them. It's not too uneven of a fight. I will transmit this map, and have my superiors contact yours.

Goddamn ignorant Sephrion bastards. Don't they realize that I can have a battle squadron of Dreadnoughts here in just a few minutes if I desire it?
