Hit an hour and a half earlier by two or three cruise missiles,
authorities look on helplessly as a section of the Giobaldi-San
Antonino Bridge falls into the Bay of Tiberia just west of
Capagatta, taking 218 souls with it. The terrorist strike
was part of three on the day in total by a mystery group
who are now responsible for an overall body count of 260.

A new age of fear?
Terrorists strike Pacitalia, sending a message that perhaps we are not as safe as we assumed

PNN staff -- An as-of-yet unknown terrorist group struck one of the deadliest blows on Pacitalian citizens to-date in the country, killing 279 and injuring nearly 5,600 in three separate attacks on infrastructure and landmarks within the country.

The Giobaldi-San Antonino Bridge west of Capagatta, which carries the traffic of betastrada autoroute B341 across the Strait of Fentomeria, was hit, by what appears to have been a handful of cruise missiles, on the north-central section of the bridge span. The bridge sagged slightly on impact, trapping 218 people in their cars. Authorities quickly arrived on the scene to start rescue operations but their attempts were interrupted ninety minutes post-attack when that section of the bridge fell into the water, killing all who sat there, unable to move or escape from the damaged bridge. At this very moment, partially submerged vehicles and crumbled sections of the part of the fallen bridge deck serve as an eerie reminder of what transpired this morning.

About twenty minutes later, a bomb was detonated at Piazza Independencia e Societato Prosperito in the west-central district of Saronno's CBD. A large-scale device, preliminary investigation indicates the primarily C4-based explosive killed 34 innocent bystanders and wounded nearly 360 more. The explosion ripped glass clean off the windows of surrounding buildings, the panes shattering on the ground below. Light standards were mangled by the shock wave, trees had limbs torn off and parked cars were scratched or crushed beyond salvage.

And in a final attack, customers at a shopping centre in Pomenigiura, a large suburban community of Saronno, scattered frantically from the mall after a tear gas blitz was followed up by a large explosion that ripped through an anchor tenant in the huge complex. Security hurriedly escorted shoppers off the property shortly after the initial explosion, because a customer thought she had seen a second device. The suspicious backpack was detonated by the police bomb squad as a precaution but contained only schoolwork. Twenty-six souls were lost in that third and final explosion of the day, with most of the 5,216 injuries coming from excessive inhalation of smoke and tear-gas or cuts and bruises.

"We heard a 'sss' sound and the building was completely smoked out, then we heard a huge 'boom' and everything shook violently," Martina Alfonscati, 33, said of the attack. "It was an odd feeling, because people were yelling "fire" because of the smoke and were not expecting the blast. Then people realised it was tear gas and were yelling 'cover your nose and mouth, try and keep your eyes closed!' The blast knocked my daughter and I straight to the ground; I have cuts on my elbows and palms and she has a welt in her arm from where she fell on a pebble in the carpark. It was very surreal. I am still in shock from the whole thing."

Poignantly, Alfonscati added, "you never expect that to happen in your neighbourhood but you always end up proven wrong. Now there are bodybags and triages set up everywhere. It is shameful and unjustifiable to attack civilians like this. What did we... you and I, the average Pacitalian, do to justify these killings?"

"At the very least, the bridge strike was terrorism," said Pan Abscondano, a Ministry of Transportation spokesman said. "I cannot speak for the other two incidents but I can tell you that, firstly, we were obviously not planning to spontaneously collapse a section of the bridge, and secondly, the structural integrity of the crossing had just been tested in routine analysis that is always done every six months. The bridge, from end to end, was found to be functional and safe in those tests and the report was certified by the Pacitalian Underwriters' Laboratories Transportation Safety Council and the Pacitalian Transport Safety Administration."

But while Mr Abscondano was uncertain about the cause of the other two attacks, Pacitalian government officials confirmed there was "significant evidence pointing to terrorism in all three attacks".

"We have already analysed chatter among suspected organisations over the past twenty-four hours, and now even before that, to try and see whether or not there is any connections within that dialogue, but we have been unlucky so far," Paolo Simonetti, a PCIC spokesman said of Wednesday's attacks. "At this point we are hard-pressed to action, and we are working on all angles of today's events. Unfortunately, we're forced to leave a lot of what happened today open to speculation because we just do not know the facts yet. However, we have enough evidence to say that it was terrorism."

Anonymous sources within the government are pointing to domestic terrorism, saying "the new threat is definitely home-grown".

Consigliera Albinanda Serodini was quick to dispel this. "We do not know much yet... it is too early. But, the fact remains we have been attacked and, for the memory of those who we lost today we will work at full capacity until we identify the culprit and bring them to justice. I will personally ensure this happens."

Opposition critics of the CdG were quick to point out Serodini's Pomentanan heritage was "probably the main reason why she was so committed: if it had happened in Gulfera or Meritate she wouldn't [give a damn]." However, PSC leader Fernando Chiovitti slammed those people, mostly from his own party, for "ignoring clear, hard fact".

"Regardless of political affiliation, we were attacked today," he said. "Not as socialists, not as capitalists, but as Pacitalians. We need to band together and heal the wounds, and partisan comments like those from certain members from my own party, of which I am very much ashamed and embarrassed, will not help the situation right now. We need to back our law enforcement one-hundred-percent as they try valiantly to track down and punish the responsible."

Stock exchanges and general trading ground to a halt Wednesday both out of respect for the 260 who died today, and also to prevent massive losses from a probable scare in response to the attacks. Serodini moved to reassure Pacitalians and visitors "the country is still safe to visit and we are still going to move along as is normal. We will not let this hamper our progress as a society."

The 9/13 attacks, as they are being called by some already, came on the first official day of the federal election campaign, and leaders were involved more with making statements on the day's tragedies than actually campaigning. In fact, Chiovitti and Green leader Neros Constantakis said they will not "launch their campaigns for another week in respect of those we lost today". In response, Serodini said it was "an inherently good and respectful idea".

To: Albinanda Serodini, Caretaker of Government, Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia
From: Yao Yang Nelson Neo, Prime Minister, United Sovereign Nations of Southeast Asia
Subject: Pacitalian bridge and bombing incident

Dear Albinanda Serodini,

First off, I would like to congratulate you for helping you guide your country out of the crisis involving the preceding FPD administration of Constantino Sorantanali. But now, let me address the incidents at the Giobaldi-San Antonino Bridge and the bombing attacks at Piazza Independencia e Societato Prosperito. On the behalf of the Federal Parliament and my fellow members of the Executive Cabinet of the Southeast Asian Federal-Parliamentarian Government, I send my warmest condolences to those that died in this senseless act of violence. All Southeast Asian flags have been raised to half-stand to mourn those that have died.

Should the Pacitalian government wish for Southeast Asian assistance either via the Southeast Asian Intelligence Directorate (SAID) or via police assistance in the form of Southeast Asian investigators and law enforcers from the Southeast Asian police and the Southeast Asian Ministry of the Interior, we shall be willing to assist in the process of justice and shall be most delighted and honored to help, should your government accept the consent for assistance.

Most sad is it not, to witness the possibility that our two nation-states come closer as friends through this tragic event. May justice be swift and resolute, and may the Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia prevail against radicalism of any ideology.

Yours Sincerely,
His Right Honorable Prime-Executive Leadership
Yao Yang Nelson Neo

Official Statement of the Grand Voivode Petr Walasku to Members of the Associated Press

It is with a most sincere sense of concern that I direct my address today towards the people of Pacitalia still reeling from a series of terrible and senseless terrorist attacks across their great nation. The hearts of all Valachs go out to the suffering of the Pacitalian people on this day of need, and it is therefore in a spirit of charity that I announce the creation of an national Giobaldi-San Antonio Bridge Disaster Relief Fund to contribute moneys towards easing the pain of this tragedy’s victims. The Walashkan government will furthermore contribute a total of 60 million Fenning ($13,148,400) towards the fund, and I encourage all private Walashkan citizens to donate what they may to the relief effort, reminding them that they are called to charity not only in the by their Walashkan Orthodox faith, but also by their duty as fellow human beings on this planet. I entrust this donation to the Pacitalian people as a gesture of goodwill, in the hope that a friendship might develop between our two nations, and will make the fund’s accounts available to Pacitalian officials at their earliest convenience. The Lord be with all Pacitalia this day.

A symbolic funeral mass was held at the basilica Our Lady of Østklint
in Hamptonshire City to commemorate the victims of the Pomentanan terrorist attacks.
At an earlier joint press conference, Chancellor Hayek and Lord Rosecrans denounced
the violence while offering the Pacitalian government their full support.

Terrorists strike Pacitalia, Government points to Domestic threat

Three separate and apparently coordinated terrorist attacks rocked the Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pacitalia yesterday with causality figures running at nearly 6,000.

The staggered attacks began with the cruise missile barrage at 9:52am local time (15:52 HCST) and ended with the Saronno gas attack approximately an hour and a half later. Once the news of the first and second attacks reached the Capital Cities, the Royal Senate and Chamber of Representatives both unanimously passed emergency resolutions condemning the violence while offering the Pacitalian government the "unconditional and unwavering support of the United Realms". Once the full scope of the day's events become apparent, the Chancellor and Lord Protector addressed an emergency meeting of the Federal Council.

"Our hearts and minds are with our eternal friends and family members in the DCRP," Dr Hayek said, "the Federal Government will do everything within its power to assist Pacitalia in any way Madame Serodini requires. I have already notified to the DCIB and RAFIS to prepare for possible involvement in the investigation of these cowardly and inhumane attacks."

Lord Rosecrans added, "Terrorism must not be able to exist in any form, anywhere. It must be confronted and eradicated whether with kindness, understanding or the tip of the sword. The Pacitalian people must not cave in to fear. They must stand strong and, if need be, Hamptonshire will act to temper their spirit. We will not allow the intimidation and harassment of the Democratic Capitalist Republic to continue for one moment longer."

Today memorial marches and religious services were held in cities throughout Hamptonshire and the Dominion in a show of support and solidarity with Pacitalia. At a mass in Portshire a local celebrant said, "We've [Hamptonians] had to live through that sort of madness before. They [Pacitalians] didn't turn their back on us, we can't turn [our backs] on them." The marches in Port Easton, home to the largest numbers of ethnic Pacitalian-Hamptonians in the nation, were the largest with turnout at over five million.

Unconfirmed reports from Naval Command in Frederiksberg say that Defense and Intelligence Secretary Sir Geoff Kirkssen has ordered Maalestren Station to its second highest level of defense and operational readiness. When asked about the increase in military activity at the large Hamptonian military base in the DCRP, the Secretary's office refused to comment.

Yazmarea

Long bursts of automatic weapons disturbed the primal quiet of the jungle, and 82mm shells tore through the clearing. The last of the blue-clad insurgents fell to the wet grass, never to move again. The immense multi-legged Peacemaker ‘tank’ moved out into the clearing to check for survivors. There were none.

Only after that did another man walk out into the clearing – tall, moustached, and wearing a black set of uniform. He was also wearing the broad-brimmed ‘Stetson’ hat that the Allanean army was famous for. He raised a radio to his ear and spoke:

‘Bronson, this is Delta Six, reporting. Casualties, zero. Tango casualties, eight hundred forty five, stronghold cleared, over.’

‘Delta Six, this is Bronson, you are good to go home, other sectors have similar results. This was the last one I think. Big Cheese will be happy. Over.

Allanean White House, Liberty City

“Mr. Kazansky, here’s the last report from the Yazmarean AOR. We seem to have cleared out the insurgents from the AOR, casualties in the last operation are twenty-five people versus 5,685 dead insurgents and approximately 45,000 injured and apprehended. There’s also a given amount of collateral damage, and those who incurred it are currently on trial.”

“Bad. I want you to report to me on the progression of the trials.”

The phone rang. “What is it? Pacita… what?!”

Kazansky lowered the receiver slowly to the table. “Jesus.” Then, he raised it to his ear again. “Let me ask you this way. There has been a cruise missile attack? I’m not, say, mishearing you or something like this?”

There was a pause. “There were three attacks? My God.”

He dropped the receiver finally, disconnecting.

“Okay. I need my webcam. Time for another Presidential Vodcast.”

A few minutes later, anybody subscribed to the President’s Youtube channel – and soon after that, anybody after that – would be able to actually watch President Kazansky make an address from his office.

Friends! Allaneans! Freemen!

Today, the nation of Pacitalia had been a victim of ruthless, pointless, stupid terrorist attacks. So far, over two hundred people were killed and almost six thousand injured by three separate attacks, yet there is no guarantee that the terrorists will not strike again to attack peaceful Pacitalia.

I will not discuss here the technicalities of the attacks, how they were carried out, and how these particular attacks could have been avoided. I will not defile the memory of the victims by discussing technicalities where a general lesson can be learned from what happened. If we learn it, then at least we will be able to say that these people have not died in vain.

Let us remind ourselves, yet again, what the point of a free society is. The point is to have a system where political conflicts are not resolved through lobbing rockets at random civilians. They are resolved through free speech, and voting, and – if need be – civil disobedience. Only if all means are exhausted are the People free to resort to the brick and the hand-grenade, the rifle and the pistol. Even then, targeting the innocent is immoral and illegitimate.

Let me get this straight, people. No matter how much you whine on about somebody else’s terrorist being your freedom fighter, or whatever, yes, what these people did there, on that bridge, in Pacitalia, remains immoral. You can couch that in whatever postmodernist rhetoric you would like. There still is right, and there still is wrong, and what these terrorists did was wrong.

And if there is wrong, then there must surely be right. I urge you - on the very day of these atrocities – to remember the right. I want you to think about truth. About justice. About freedom. And I want you to think of these people who wanted to take justice and freedom away.

Pacitalians! Your enemies – yes, they are your enemies, whoever they are – think they can use violence to control your behavior. They are not different from Klebold and Harris, Hitler and Stalin, Saddam Hussein and Father Kraven – they’re just more inept then these people. I urge you, in this day of suffering to cancel no celebration and no event. Remember, you canceling events, living in fear and anguish, is what they want. Any adaptation of your lifestyle to fit their desires means – yes, yes, yes – that the terrorists win.

Find those people. Have your army and navy and air force go out and kill them. Here, I said it: kill them. And then let Pacitalia – save for the poor families of the victims, for whom it will not be possible – return to normal life. Only in this way you will ensure that the victims have not died in vain. Only in this way you will ensure that the terrorists will have died in vain, not achieving a single goal they were aiming at.

And remember: no matter how many lies, horrors are in the world, Truth, Justice, and Freedom still exist.

And Truth, Justice, and Freedom will prevail.

Thank you all.

May God bless Pacitalia.

And may God continue to bless Allanea.”

Broadcast networks in Pacitalia were going through a normal day, just starting to wind down their coverage of the 9/13 terrorist attacks in Pomentane and Fentomeria, ready to begin regular coverage of various news events, when something shocking happened. All of a sudden, PNN, PBC, Network Two, Trio and FBC all lost their signals simultaneously. Viewers at home thought it might have been a power outage in Timiocato causing the issues, but their confusion was soon relieved as the signals returned.

However, the face that appeared with the return of transmission was not who they expected. In fact, five networks were broadcasting the same feed. The man in view, a muscular, gruff looking thirty-something, stood in front of the camera, his moustache and light beard seeming to twitch with the poor quality of the video feed. Masked men with semi-automatic carbines and grenades tied to their belts flanked him on each side. He began reading from a script.

I, Oswaldo Perón de Fornál, hereby proclaim my responsibility in planning, coordinating, and finally, orchestrating Wednesday's attacks of liberation against civilians within Pacitalia. The successful operation has given us hope, and it has given us a taste of victory with which we will spread our message across this country.

We are the New Margherian Brotherhood, a fight for freedom that stretches far and wide along the beautiful valleys and ranges of this unique province, earning the sympathy of the oppressed Margherian who remains an unfairly underprivileged slave under the iron-fist rule of the Pacitalian heathens. We will take the fight to your doorstep if need be. We will fight until every last Pacitalian is dead, a pool of blood on a rubbled road, if need be. We will not stop until we win! We will not stop!

You may think we are just the GLNP with a new name: if so, you are naïve and wildly mistaken. We are not the GLNP. We are not the Margherian Freedom and Solidarity Party's wing of violent acts. We are our own boys, everyday Margherians all the way from the farmhand to the business owner. We are well-organised, well-equipped and ready for battle. If you are sitting now in your comfortable living rooms, fearing the worst, you are justified in doing so. Because, let me assure you, Pacitalia, we are capable.

And now, like I have warned my "fellow Pacitalians", I will warn each and every liberal democracy out there, particularly those close to the Democratic Capitalist Republic of Pigs. If you so much as attempt to stifle us, if you so much as breathe in our direction, we will come after you, or your people. Millions will die from your carelessness, your arrogance. You never know... it could be a C4 charge on a subway train... or it could be the next nuclear attack. As I said, we are well-supplied.

Give us what we want - an independent, sovereign Margherian kingdom with a rightful king, His Majesty descended directly from the House of Paras, and, an Inquisition to fight atheist corruption - and we will go away. Fail to heed to our demands, and you will regret your foolish decision.

It is time for Margheria to rise out of the bottom-feeding situation it was forced into at the time of the union of Pacitalia in 1503. You will remember us for centuries! The New Margherian Brotherhood has arrived!

The broadcast terminated, the signal dropped and the networks' original feeds returned. PNN anchor Margareta San Cristobal sat in shocked silence and it took a snap of the fingers from the director to realise they were back on-air.

"I... apologise for that technical error," she said, quickly recovering her composure. "It appears we, and other networks, have just experienced a signal hijack. We will investigate the source of that and will file a report on what you have just heard shortly. Again, we apologise for that error. We will return after this short break."

The music cut in and the network cut to break with millions sitting stone-faced but scared in front of their sets, wondering what would happen next.

(OOC: I can't exactly remember if we had an embassy exchange or not, but still... Oh, Pacitalia, TG.)

Kopstal, near Luxembourg

A blue wheeled tank, type LT-5T, slowly rolled down the road near the Pacitalian Embassy. The vehicle was marked "Marechaussee", implying it belonged to the Van Luxemburgian Constabulary, handling everything from Customs duties to Military Policing. They were, to be simple, heavier then the Van Luxemburgian Police, since they had these wheeled armoured vehicles. They hardly every came from their storages, but this was one of these moments. Some one hundred metres away, two 4x4's of the Marechaussee blocked the road, while blue warning lights illuminated the area. The personnel manning the roadblock carefully stopped every vehicle, and checked the papers. Most were diplomatic vehicles, since the roadblock was set up in the Diplomatic and Embassy neighbourhood, and the Marechaussees were actually violating Diplomatic Immunity conventions, but the commanders figured the diplomats would understand. All was set to prevent an attack on the Pacitalian embassy, after the terroristic attacks in Pacitalia earlier that week. The sight of the heavily armed tank slowly moving over the road, and officers in bulletresistant vests with Heckler & Koch MP5 Submachineguns was frightening, but "completely justified", according to the Ministry of Interior Affairs.

A DAF truck parked on the side of the road commanded the complete operation. Two guards awaited at the vehicle entrance, each with an MP5 in their hands, held closely against their chest. More of these guards awaited at the entry of the Pacitalian Embassy, looking most adequate in their profession. Inside the truck, two officers monitored the internet, and also saw the broadcast of the New Margherian Brotherhood on a news bulletin of one of many of Van Luxemburg's Commercial Channels. It was a coincidence they witnessed it, since they were actually reading the declaration by the Van Luxeburgian Grand Duchy's Premier, Nicolas Hirtz. The Grand Duke hadn't been available for comments, since he was on a conference with several international delegations at his Palace.

DIPLOMATICAL COMMUNIQUÉ

We would like to express our support for the casualties of the 13/9 Terrorist Attacks, And the complete Pacitalian population. Terrorism is an illegal weapon in the war for freedom. The New Margherian Brotherhood has no right whatsoever to include innocent citizens in their quest for freedom.

However, Van Luxemburg does not support this action in any way, and condems the present, and possible future actions of the New Margherian Brotherhood, an unlawful organ in an unlawful quest for freedom. If needed, Van Luxemburg can deliver aid in any form to Pacitalia, including Casualty Identification Teams, Engineers, or Communication officers to stream connections with the Van Luxemburgian Law Enforcement Agencies and Pacitalia. The Grand Duchy will be glad to arrest every suspect currently residing in Van Luxemburg, and will apply extra protection to the Pacitalian Embassy, to prevent any attacks that could kill pacitalians on Van Luxemburgian soil. The Van Luxemburgian Grand-Ducal Airforce has made several of their civilian aircraft available for Pacitalians residing in Van Luxemburg, to travel back to Pacitalia, if needed.

We once again want to express our sincere sympathy with the Pacitalians, and that this will not happen ever again, not in Pacitalia, not in Van Luxemburg, not in any place on Earth.

Oceanians Reaffirm Resolute Solidarity with Pacitalians

IMPERIUM - Authorities in the United Kingdom have been quick to respond to a string of terror attacks in Pacitalia, Lord Salisbury condemning the attacks as “markedly un-Pacitalian” in nature.

Although the attack came after the close of the business day in the United Kingdom, the government was quick to respond as Lord Salisbury summoned the Cabinet to the Citadel. After brief discussions, Lord Salisbury made a statement condemning the attacks calling them “markedly un-Pacitalian” and “a useless means of addressing any real or imagined grievances… in a democratic state.” The Prime Minister responded to inquiries about any official aid from the UK to Pacitalia by stating that the government “was in touch with the appropriate Pacitalian officials.”

A short time later, at a banquet for leading companies in the energy sector in Churchill, Shadow Chancellor Rodney Ingrahm expressed similar views to those of the Prime Minister, stating that the attacks were the “epitome of barbarity… in the modern era.” And although the major exchanges in Philadelphia and Breningrad were closed, Mr. Ingrahm urged restraint for Oceanian investors as “Pacitalia remains a stable investment opportunity,” and that the attacks were “minor aberrances not indicative of any long-term risks.”

Despite the Shadow Chancellor’s statement, however, this morning has witnessed a small sell-off of Pacitalian companies listed on major Oceanian exchanges. Stephen McKay, Chancellor of the Exchequer announced in the noon hour that the government continued to hold “its positive outlook on investment opportunities” in Pacitalia and urged investors to avoid “buying into any ill-advised panic.”

Meanwhile, across the UK protests against the yet-unknown terrorists were held in many cities including Imperium, Philadelphia, and Breningrad. In many churches, temples, and mosques across the UK services are being held today in remembrance for those victims. Lord Salisbury spoke at a multi-faith service in Imperium and added to his previous comments stressing that “at this hour, we Oceanians reaffirm our resolute solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Pacitalia. We shall stand by them in this hour of sadness as we shall stand by them in their hour of triumph when they overcome these tragedies.”
