I've toyed with this idea before, and NS is picking up for me, but Death and Glory and Nova Galactica aren't really going very quickly for my tastes. So let's do something different for all you fantasy nuts out there. Instead of doing alternate Earth history or Future Tech, what about Fantasy Tech? Make your own nation from the standard races and sub-races (Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Hobbits, Gnomes, Orcs, etc.) or introduce your own. I'll try not to go crazy on upgrading peoples to Mod like I usually do.
But this time I'm putting this all up for a vote. Please only vote if you're interested in joining. If you do join, please stick with it. I don't like inactive members, unless you have a reason for being inactive.
The vote is to whether or not to make this off-site, on-site, or an odd combination of both, like what Universe II has. I'd like for this one to actually kick off, and I will expect to see a degree of quality and knowledge in your writing.
Just a note: Archiving here and recruiting will probably happen anyway (With the latter having to happen here.)
I saw this with one of my MT nations, and decided to create a fantasy tech nation just for this.
Tanal is based on the nation of Lantan, from the Forgotten Realms D&D campaign setting. They worship the god of smiths, and they are a little further ahead of other fantasy tech nations. If it is okay, I would like to give them carbines and perhaps rockets - though these will be the products of skilled craftsmen, not massive factories. To compensate, they will have fewer spellcasters than other nations. I see some nations as putting their strength in their mages. We of Tanal put our strength in our riflemen.

Actually, it's emant to be in the classic DnD-Style setting. Not sure if I made that clear. But we can do a Fantasy-MT crossover.

DnD setting, eh?
...Iron Kingdoms. Has to be Iron Kingdoms. No way 'round it.

But not a specific setting.
I've got to be more specific.

How MT is too MT> because ive always wanted to play a world that is close to MT (say WWI / WWII tech level) but has magic. So instead of using huge artillery pieces, magic users might launch fireballs at incoming landing craft, or something like that.
Ill join no matter what (KA idea btw), but i want to know how far i can go towords my ideal nation...
Hm... Thompson vs. Magic... who will win?

No, I just had dinner.
That's certainly an option. Perhaps we could have multiple, parallel RPs of this, like one on-site and one off-site, or parallel RPs on either or.

Though Im not familiar with the DnD world, I'd certainly join as a Warhammer based nation

warhammer is Humans vs Orks with pistols and such, right?
(ive read so many SF/Fantasy books they've all blurred into a single book. I call it...
DarkStar Gem of the Robot Empire, a story of Fantastic Firearms!)
I still insist upon IK-style. Me want Warjacks!
Valley of the Giant
14-09-2006, 03:18
You can be whatever you want, so long as it doesn't go past WWI tech, how about that? And even then the weapons have to be toned down to equalize it all, okay?
And Warhammer Fantasy is Humans vs Orks as you'd normally see; Warhammer 40,000 is Humans versus Everything with cool Sci-Fi shit.

Rather demeaning in terms of scale and scope in terms of referring to WH:F. Its not like its bloody Warcraft :P. No way is it THAT limited.
You've got Vampire Counts, Tomb Kings, Greenskins, Humans, Elves, Dark Elves, Dwarves, Lizardmen, Skaven, Ogres! You can't just say "Oh, its Orks and Humans"
I'd be going for something Warhammery or something IKish

^ what I meant to say :). I'd like to go for an Ork/chaos/Skaven combo sort of nation....
Valley of the Giant
14-09-2006, 03:32
I know that, Chron; I recently bought the Battle of Maccrage set myself. Just putting into anology.
I'm glad this is picking up votes, but it's getting kind of close, so I'm going to wait untiiil....Saturday before making a decision, give or take.
Chronosia
14-09-2006, 03:35
An admittedly flawd analogy. Macragge has nothing to do with Fantasy, and so lessens the impact of your understanding when you limit it to "Orks and Humans". Of course, there is the ever present glory of CHAOS too! :D
Valley of the Giant
14-09-2006, 03:54
You know what? Let's put it this way: I know enough about the worlds to give a more detailed and more accurate anology, but I'm just going to nod, smile, and agree to everything by saying 'Yes.'

Yes, but this wasn't ignorance. It was frustration and confusion.

is it decided if it will be on or off site yet?
and ill be playing a new nation ill make, with Britain WWI tech, and very little magic users, so a magic user is about equal to about 100 infantry, so its even

I would love to have a semi-permenant fantasy-RP group. While I personally lean towards kepping it midievil in flavor, if everyone else wants to do more modern things, well...I'm willing to try any game at least once.

While I personally lean towards kepping it midievil in flavor, if everyone else wants to do more modern things,
ive revised my position actually.
some ideas of mine.
Nation Name: The Empire of New Armenica
Main Races: Human (76%) Dwarf (21%) Elf (3%)
Rifles: 5 shot Bolt Action Loaders, Machine Guns very new, rarley seen on the battlefield.
Aircraft: Bi-Planes (very few, launched from hangars carved into the mountain-side) Zepplins (more common, used for troop transport)
Terrain: Mountains and the surrounding plains.
Relationship with its neighbors: Neighbors are threatened by it, but the Armenican Technology is too advanced for them to do much.
Presence of Magic: Very Low (Most Mages are immediatley drafted into the military)
The border is guarded by a series of stone bunkers, trenches are not used yet since the Empire hasn't been at war since firearms were developed. Terrain is very mountainous, requireing most troops to be deployed by zepplin. The Empire was very aggressive at its birth, but over 500 years have passed, and most citizens are content to sit on their land and be happy. The current Emporer, Emporer Michael Rawling III, has other ideas for the Empire though.

Need it neccessarily be an either/or proposition? Would it not be possible to RP the fantasy-ish-ness within a fluid timeline much like the rest of NS?
North Mack
14-09-2006, 19:11
hm... you know, i have a question, thats only semi-related to this thread,
why is it whenever someone talks about magic, it is always assumed that their tech is medieval? I mean, eventually, even worlds with magic would discover gunpowder, nations would arm their armies with guns, cannons, biplanes would appear, tanks,
eventually, wouldnt a Magic Tech nation have modern day tanks, M-16s as standard weaponry for soldiers, pretty much be like modern day, but with magic?
Sorry. got sidetracked...
Chronosia
14-09-2006, 19:33
Well, you've got the pseudo-medievil, pseudo-steampunk and magick worlds of Warcraft, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicks Obscura, Rise of Legends, and more high tech meets magic in stuff like FF7 and 8. Look at it that way, and you'll see that theres more genre crossover out there than you'd think

See, that's why I play Shadowrun. :D
Anyway, will have a rough draft up later today. I have an exam in half an hour that I really should be studying for...
Old Atlantia
14-09-2006, 22:04
I'll wait until the techlevel is decided before posting my nation's info, but I'm currently leaning towards a evil-creature underground (IE in caverns caves and tunnels under the earth) empire with lots of low level troops. I suggest that, once everything is decided, someone makes a map.
North Mack
15-09-2006, 00:49
hm... i could seen an interesting roleplay already. Since my nation is extremely mountainis, yours could be underneath...
and... well you can guess what happens....
Old Atlantia
15-09-2006, 01:38
Yeah... my creatures (Ive yet to decide on either Orks or undead) could inhabit your abandoned/overrun mines and/or underground cities and there could be constant warfare between the two...

With regards to technology, Tanal is what Lantan will be in fifty years. Talani soldiers now favor firearms over melee weapons, and they have cannon, but they do not have any sort of electricity, nor do they have advanced medicine (why use medicine when healing spells work better), and, critically, they lack mass production (Tanal's "industrial base" consists of large numbers of skilled artisans). And to compensate, they have less magic than other nations.
