The Democratic Oligarchy of Cruxium
History
Founded in 1909, Cruxium is in fact the final colony the British Empire ever founded and was granted independence just three short years later, as Britain’s role in the First World War prevented the maintenance of order. Cruxium underwent dramatic industrial revolution during the thirties and forties, after a fifteen year period of finding its’ feet economically and politically, bringing it up to par with the then standard of Britain, for whom involvement in two world wars had taken a toll.
Despite the Cruxium Revolution, ties with Britain remained relatively strong, for many people of pure English heritage were in political power, rather than first generation Cruxians. Trade with Britain flourished, Cruxium offering large amounts of iron, bauxite, iridium and copper. In return, Cruxium was able to acquire new technologies as they were discovered. It is perhaps the nature of this that led to mining becoming the primary occupation in Cruxium until the nineteen seventies, when enormous deposits of gold were discovered and all mining operations were made public sector.
After the 1974 Gold Rush, mining was toned down due to strict government control and swiftly replaced by tourism and farming. During the late seventies, farming took a bad hit after a Cruxium was ravaged by vicious summer storms and entire crops were lost. Emergency stores of gold were broken out to secure food for the populous and unemployment hit 38%. Realising the danger, First Speaker Harris drastically cut corporation taxes to 2.25%, introduced Spiritual Tax and privatized many areas of the nation, including mining, public transport, media, electricity, water, gas and mining.
What has become commonly known as the Corporate Age ensured the continued strength of Cruxium due to the influx of foreign companies. Unemployment reached an all-time low of 0.9% and the treasury was quickly reimbursed for the expenditure of food supplies. The death of First Speaker Harris in 1987 became a day of national mourning for the man who has become the greatest Cruxian in history. His successor, FS Paxton lasted only two years before public outcry demanded his resignation, and was the last Conservative Party First Speaker.
Gradual decline followed for Cruxium as it underwent a tide of immigration and growth population that had been considered impossible. Over the course of a single year the population once grew by seven million. The birth rate continued to soar, as did immigration numbers, and it soon became clear the country could not cope. To raise the extra money, corporation tax was raised to nearly 15%, resulting in job losses nationwide as more and more corporations pulled out, plunging Cruxium close to disaster. Things righted themselves when the Socialist Party defeated the Liberal Party in a landslide electoral victory.
All areas of business deemed essential to the public good were privatized, these being gas, electricity, water, media and public transport. Nearly two and a half million immigrants were also deported in a single week, with fifteen million immigrants deported over the course of 18 months. Corporation Tax was also reduced to 7.75%, encouraging the return of some businesses and the economy gradually righted itself, before becoming once again enormous.
Cruxium has undergone steady growth over the past several years, with the economy and population leveled out. The Cruxium Socialist Party lost control of the House of Democracy in 2005 to the Evolutionist Party, causing much surprise amongst the public. A recount of the votes was carried out, however the result was the same.

Government Structure & Elections
Cruxium’s government consists of an oligarchy, nineteen individuals representing each area of the nation and whom are elected to stand as the party administration by their constituency. Once a constituency has chosen its’ candidates for each party, the general election is carried out to determine which political group is the most advantageous overall.
Constituency elections occur three years after the previous general election, ensuring two years of time for vote counting and raising public awareness. General elections are held every five years, except in the event of resignation or death of the First Speaker, where a temporary First Speaker is taken from amongst the existing government and the entire voting processed redone.
Voting in the general election was made compulsory in 1925, however is laxly enforced. Regardless, the last three general elections have each seen more than 80% population turnout. Currently, the voting age is 18 and is granted to every Cruxian citizen.
Each member of the Oligarchy of Cruxium has a personal staff whose purpose is to manage the affairs of their constituency and bring important matters to them. All issues considered worthy of full government attention are brought up during Speaking at the House of Democracy, presided over by the First Speaker. Resolutions require a 14/5 vote, while creation of, and amendments to, existing Laws require a unanimous vote.
None may be eligible for position as a Speaker without possessing suitable criteria, that being at least a Bachelors level degree in politics, sociology or economics. Generally, however, candidates for Speakerhood are extremely well educated in politics, sociology, psychology, business and economics. Candidates for Speakerhood must be 30 years of age or more at the time of general election, however may be involved in constituency elections prior to that age.
The Cruxian Evolutionist Party (CEP)
Dedicated to the evolution of humanity as a whole, and considered by many votes to be more a humanitarian group, the Evolutionists have already begun changes according to their manifesto, having raised Spiritual Tax to incredible heights, set an immigration quota and begun is in the early stages of privatizing many areas of the country.
Further issues from the Evolutionist Part manifesto is the introduction of a standing military, something claimed to have been their greatest and yet most unreasonable campaign pledge, as well as an increase in the minimum wage and a freeze on income tax.
Currently, the Evolutionists’ First Speaker is Philip Dunford, who holds a Master of Arts Degree in Sociology, a Master of Sciences Degree in Psychology and a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours Degree in Politics and Government. FS Dunford was educated at Oxford University, England.
Culture & Society
Cruxian’s have long been likened to the English, being a generally hardy people renown for their emotional control. There is a very strong, yet very basic, class system in Cruxium. Either you are highly educated, or you are a manual labourer with highly specialized, non-academic training. Approximately 12% are considered the Upper Class, whilst the remainder is referred to as the Common Class, a system which everyone seems to accept with exceptional grace upon the surface.
What other cultures might find common place to mention, or act, Cruxian’s find distasteful, boorish or plain rude; perhaps oddly, however, other things can be seen as highly questionable. Indeed it is no doubt down to the fact that the country has long been run by those highly educated in the ways of psychology and sociology. Most notable is the lax laws regarding pornography, something that the Cruxian society adopted from Japan, in comparison with the strict rules on public decency that dictate a legal minimum amount of clothing.
Tourists often find themselves questioning the people of Cruxium about certain things, such as why it is considered impolite to laugh too loudly in public, or for people to talk to one whilst in public toilets. Invariably the answer to the questions will be, “It just is not done.” Many Cruxian’s will consider themselves to be ‘proper’ and upstanding, with excess being looked at in moderate disgust.
Perhaps the most unique aspect of Cruxium is that it is governed less by Law than it is by social peculiarities that are deeply ingrained into the populous. For a person to be visibly overweight by more than two or three stone is considered outrageous; similarly the concept of smoking at all, or drinking excessively and being unable to control oneself in public, is considered most heinous and likely to result in becoming a social outcast.
Due to the long-term difficulties in being an organized religion within the borders of Cruxium, members of the population no longer comprehend the concept of it. Sciences are highly respected in all forms with the populous, however. Generally speaking, Cruxian’s look down upon religion and those who practice it, considering it something debased and rather unclean, despite World Society classes being compulsory during secondary education.
