Sign-Up's closed. Go read the rules: here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=498614).

This is the first of many competitions that will be sponsored by Deserted Territories Land Reclamation Services (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=496093).

This game will be played on a parcel of land DT aquired many years ago in a conflict with Dephire. There is a large pine forest along the northern edge, and mountains form the boundary on the southern edge. On the Eastern and Western sides are oceans, and running through the center is a river. (It is not deep enough for large naval ships, or submarines.) The river is about 2-3 miles wide and it runs from one ocean to the other. There is a small desert in the South West that runs through the mountains. This Desert reaches an average high of 125 Degrees Fareinheit. The majority of the field is thin woods on rolling hills dotted with praries. The feild is 10,000 sq. miles (doubled from original) and is a rough rectangle. It sits atop several untapped oil reserves and its mountains a chock full of minerals.

The Lassitern Marines were way, way, way out of their depth. Used to the more mountainous temperate forest of home, the desert was a hell of a shock. Fortunately, they had been provided with plenty of water, and if they moved fast enough and light enough, they should make it out of the desert without any problems.

Base camp consisted of two lagered trucks, several helicopters, all powered and tied down, ready for collecting the survivors at the end of the wargames, and nearly thirty large tents, with power provided through large portable generators, allowing information from the orbitting NIRTSAT satellites to be provided directly to the Marines through their TYR combat system helmets. Brand-new, and completely untested, the idea was that they would never be going into an area unprepared, with access to infra-red cameras, high-definition cameras, and even radar systems to detect incoming vehicles and aircraft.

On the downwind side of the camp was the Lassitern's biggest advantage. one hundred Arabian packhorses, laden down with extra water, ammunition, medical supplies, food, and weapons. The rules had specified no vehicles, but mentioned nothing of the use of animals in a non-combat support role. Old-fashioned? yes. An advantage? Definately.

DT game officials headed out to the Lassitern plot, they being the first to arrive. They landed in an orange blackhawk, to the north of the camp. They quickly made their way through, surveying the vehicels, making sure they were far from useable state, ext. They were pleased with the camp and making their way out when they saw the packhorses. After a quick call back to the base at the plateau, and a look through the rules, they judged the horses were fair. After that the blackhawk took off and flew away, over the mountains to the game officials staging area. The Officials spread out, quietly observing the Lassitern camp.

The Corporation now had a vested role to play in this game, considering the money placed in to the entry. The Converted soldiers would earn thier keep in the competition. The COnverted soldiers where good, but not as good as thier purebreed counter part the SF, or Security forces for short. With 300 Converted and 200 SF plus the other non combatants they stood a good chance of taking the land. With the place set the teams where given thier Orca location and told to report ASAP.

The soldiers where fast and fliud and strapped in fast. the non combat one where a bit slower. Once everyone was on. The orders screens on the Orca transport came to life and gave the orders.

" Order one directive one- WIn

Order one directive two eliminate enemy forces not mark in orange

Order two directive one- Win"

The screen shut off and the soldiers gathered all intell on the land through sat uplinks before they reached the plateau.

Everyone knew when they arrived the sound of the blasting Orca engines as they hovered in the landing zones blasted sand and wind for what seemed like miles. As the Soldiers where let off they scouted the area and began to identify lifeform on the land. One lifeform cuagh thier eyes.... Horses. And animal that was not included in their intell packet. With the soldiers placed on ground and thier Equipment dropped the SF ordered the converted to carry the supplies. The SF then ordered the converts to tourch the land. the rules said that we could not Directly enage the enemy. And they wheren't they where engaging the land. Raining naplam missiles where fired from one time use launchers and rocketed over the land scape and detonated about 20 feet above the tree tops igniting the forest and creating a very hostile playing field.

Ten minutes in and the Toopoxican soldiers had already began to set up a base camp, HMG's defended ever convceivable entrance and weak point whilst soldiers were sent out on regular patrols and scouting missions, in the center of all this was one General Octonius.

Octonius had developed a tactic of a Defensive Convoy train, slowly moving upwards toward the Plateu setting up temporary bases along the way, for now the Army stood awaiting inspection by DT officials, it was a wise point to mention the equipemnt brought along with the Army, along with a total of 20,000 Sandbags, 200 Shovels, 250 Tents, 5,000 P21 Magazines and 2,000 P26 HMG Magazines there was also Rufus, a preserved head of a German Shepard which adorned the tip of Octonius' Standard.

As the DTR officials walked through the tented camp, they were followed by every set of eyes available. Marines would speak only in Lassitern, and more often than not, someone would say something, and the rest would burst out laughing, all the while looking at the officials.

"Huh, go figure" said one, staring at the display inside his helmet as he cleaned the rest of his kit. "Looks like someone just set fire to the forest up North"

"Schiese" said another, "glad we didn't end up there. Which unlucky bastards are under that lot?"

"Raven corps, and er, Raven corps. They're the only ones in it. Why the hell napalm a flammable forest when they are the only people in it? Idioten."

With the napalm now rushing inward in the game zone Raven corps troops waited for the forest to act like a sweeping net. walking behind the flames heat vision would be usless as well as nightvision. And with the fire acting as a net and a weapon, it was sure to stir up the nest. And with three fire started the fire would spread out. and would soon cover most of the land mass. The only safe place would be behind it....

The soldiers moved forward with weapons trained up. Converted soldiers took point and set ou to win and kill....

The Samurai deployed quickly, the Centuries unloading sledges loaded with supplies. No camp was set up, the Samurai would be moving out quickly, having to dismantle their camp would waste valuable time. Regardless of potential time wasted, the desert was a poor place to camp. The six Centuries would move out of the wastes as soon as the game began.

The convicts had all chosen weapons before deployment, most had an underground rifle known only as project s. banned in GDA for the sole reason that it did not kill its victem quickly, instead it crippled them and caused them to bleed to death. They spread out, eager to find and kill someone after so many years of solitary. Seperated in to 5 groups and then sperated again into 50 more (10 per group) they each left the landing zone 2 going north, 1 going north-east, and 2 going east.

The camp was a buzz of activity as the battalion of Groznian Marine rangers got ready to embark on an internationally publicized mission of great importance. The rangers were a select group of individuals in the Marine Corps who had proven themselves in combat and undergone rigorous training. Their speciality was hostile enviornments, anything from urban warfare to the jungle, however the mountains were their area of expertise.

Lt Col. Kirk Avraam noticed a wall of smoke rising from in the distance. A moment later a radio officer ran up to him.

"Sir, navsat report on the fires to our north, some one's torched the forest."

The battalion was just about to head out. This report did not concern the LtCol.

"Doesn't matter to us however they slow themselves up north. We march out as planned.

"Yessir!" with a crisp salute the officer was quickly gone.

The battallion marched out not 3 minutes after the start of the game. They moved out as a main group with smaller squads taking point forming a sort of arrow formation. Farther ahead of these were individual members of the ForceRecon to scout out the terrain and for any possible contact so that the main body would be ready.

DT officials flew to each of the teams staring plots. they gave everyone the okay. After all the officials had radioed in, the game was ready to start. On the plateau, an official walked over to a pair of flares; one red, one green. He lit the green one. It streaked up and starbursted, raining green tendrils down twoards the teams' goal. Accompanying it was a salvo of artillery at each team. For clarification, each DT official gave the teams they were with the go ahead.

OOC: Blackhelm, you can post your guys having already been here when the flare went off. And you can directly engage the other teams and ambusher's. the only thing you can't do is send guys off the map to take out the artilleryTand such.

Samurai Prior Kurono and his maniple had started moving almost before the flare had gone off. They were already a half mile away from their starting point when they heard the distinctive thump of artillery fire.

"Mother of god... Incoming!"

The Samurai rushed forwards, taking cover wherever they could, quickly burying themselves in the sand, face up so that their heavy armor could shield them. They could hear shells falling to the south-east, and Kurono felt a shard of shrapnel ricochet off his chest plate, another bouncing off his knee.

Thank god we were moving, otherwise those would be landing right on us...

Sucking on his oxygen supply, he waited for the thump of the guns to die down, and waited a few minutes after the fire stopped. Even if the enemy was using spotters, his men would have vanished, seemingly wiped off the face of the earth. Wiggling under the sand, he dug into one of the pockets on his pack, pulling out a clear plastic-like tarp. Pushing it up through the sand, he found a small switch and flipped it. Instantly, the tarp shifted its color and pattern, mimicing the sand around it with remarkable skill. Spreading the tarp above him, Kurono pulled himself out of the sand. Keeping the tarp over him, he pulled a set of spikes from his pack, and rapidly set up a canopy above himself as he pulled himself entirely out of the sand.

"ALRIGHT, EVERYONE UP!"

He could hear the groans of a few men that had sustained injuries as they set up their OLED canopies as well. Soon, the entire group had shade, as well as camoflague from any enemy spotters. The Prior strode through the makeshift camp, checking on his men. Thank god that none had been killed. A few riflemen were injured, and one of the mortar crewmen had taken a piece of shrapnel through his left arm. Medics were already at work bandaging wounds, while a few men rummaged through the sledges. Several bags were badly slashed, but nearly all of the supplies were intact. Kurono nodded in satisfaction. They had been lucky this time. They wouldn't get so lucky again.

*ALERT, CODE-23, CODE 23*

The message flashed up across the eye-pieces of every single one of the infantrymen, along with an audible klaxon and verbal warning. The men instantly spread out, leading the horses away with them. The had done well, and the northern edge of the desert was only another days travel away, but any more ambushes like this could cost them.

As the shells decimated sand dunes, and covered the area in a thin film of dust, the Marines did their best to shelter in flat open territory, squirming deeper into the sand. One Marine and his argumentative horse were not so lucky, the shell landing right between the two, blasting both into oblivion. Other than that, injuries were kept to a minimum, light scratches and bruises. The first operational test of the eye-in-the-sky system had saved many lives, and they hadn't even fired seen their enemy yet.

As the team moved along the burn paths of the forest fire, the first shell made contact. The soldiers made quick manuvears for cover and spread themsleves out the reduce numbers loss. One after another the shell hit. With the soldiers moving forward the none combat employees however did not have cover and 12 if the died when a ramdon shell struck them. Once the shelling stopped the soldiers retrieved any thing of use or value and continued one ther mission.

" Unit 56497-12-d retrieve map of the area. " announced the commanding unit

The unit retrieved the map and took it to the commander and ordered another round of rainers naplam missiles be luanched to opposing plots of entry. With the orders the men went and readied the luanchers. Once the areas where selected the missiles where launched and detonated over the tree line in different plots around the land.

He spoke into his radio, made a note on his clipboard, and watched as the first attack was carried out. 6 unmanned attack helicoptors started up and took off beyond the northern forest. The day was sunny as the 4th Ranger battalion marched accross the beautiful rolling planes towards the plateau. The tremor was barely noticable as soldiers noticed birds flying up all at once.

"Anyone feel that?" said one soldier.

Their commander felt it too. A thought raced through his mind as he remembered what the DT officials said about random attacks on the contestants. In a moment he realized the dreaded..

he blared into the comm channel "Artillery strike! Squad leaders spread out and get into positions!"

Instantly the squad leaders relayed the messege to their men and the entire battalion started spreading out and taking cover, hoping to be on the sheltering side of the rolling hills that dominate the plains. Their was no time to dig in and all they could to was pray a shell didn't land near them.

And then it hit. Without warning artillery shells started blasting the area in around the soldiers. Fortunately it wasn't the aim of the DT officials to wipe out contestants this early as they were using high-explosive rounds and not cluster munitions, which could decimate everything in square miles. LtCol Avraam watched, prostrated on the ground like all his other soldiers, as the radio officer he had talked to barely hours ago was vaporized by a shell that landed on him.

When the dust began to clear and the shelling stopped, the men got up to asses the damage. Avraam was surprised that casualties were alot lower than he had anticipated: only 8 dead and 19 wounded. Of those 3 were seriously injured and the rest were still well able to fight. Avraam considered how many he should leave behind to gaurd the wounded as medic crews came to pick them up... the men left behind would no doubt be out of the competition and Avraam couldn't afford to leave behind men. He was pleased, though, when the 3 wounded soldiers assured him that they would be able to hold out. An orange smoke beacon was set and the battalion set off again.

The vanguard of the battalion was luckier and got to sit and watch as the steel hell rained on their comrades. In the distance the smoke was reaching higher than ever and the vangaurd advanced again.

The Maniples were on the move again. Their OLED tarps were carried like a tortoise shell, shielding them from view as the Samurai peered out through the transparent backs of the tarps. Those soldiers not holding one of the poles that held up the OLEDs helped with the sledges, or kept watch for enemies.

Prior Kurono walked along side one of the sledges, looking over the shoulder of one of the mortar crewman for his Maniple. The Samurai was fiddling with a laptop computer, looking over a sattelite feed of the area. Especially intriguing was the massive wall of smoke that was covering much of the northern half of the island.

"Glad we aren't over there... Did the judges do that?"

"Probably not, sir. We saw contrails from locations 1 through 3 before the smoke started. IR says that the forest below there is on fire, spreading away from the starting points. Best guess is that whoever started there set 'em. Of course, it draws all sorts of attention, so I'm not sure how wise it was."

The Prior nodded.

"Good. Keep me updated on what's happening."

The two saluted each other, and Kurono moved back, checking up on the rest of his Maniple as they continued their hidden march.

<Just north of the desert region>

The survivors of the desert and the artillery strikes paused here to rest for the day. It had been a long and arduous journey, especially for these men, far used to colder climes. Sentries were sent out to patrol the nearby region, and fire-teams set up defensive machine-gun and mortar positions.

"All Echo fireteams, take a bead on that forest region along the eastern side of the map. Each team is to fire a five round chemical salvo. CS and pepper spray only. Lets incapacitate, not kill."

With that simple order, all four mortars opened up, sending twenty air-bursting CS and pepper spray chemical rounds into the flank of the Raven Corps troops. They thought they were safe from attack because of the immediately obvious firewall they had set up. They had forgotten entirely about the sky above them, what with the huge smoke marker they left cutting down visibility but making ranging long-range weapons easy. That would be a big mistake.

"Commander, Patrol Two-Two"

"Two-Two, Steiner. Go ahead"

"Sir, we have visible contact on twenty inbound hostiles, heading for you and the firebase."

"Roger Two-Two. Break, and do not engage. Fall back to base, setting traps in their route if you can. When you see a green flare, hit the deck and stay there."

*CLICK-CLICK*

The double tap of a throat-mike meant that the patrol was now carrying out their orders, but didn't want their voices to carry to the convicts, and alert them of the trap lying ahead of them.

Colonel Steiner moved quickly, pushing the mortars and four hundred men further east, away from the incoming hostile, before deploying his men behind hastily constructed sand-bag positions, setting up the two GL-3s and four flanking AR-9M light-machine guns behind sandbags, and spreading a half a dozen of his snipers across the dunes, where they hid in the sand and long grass, watching the approaching groups through their SR-12 rifles & scopes.

Patrol Two-Two crossed the defensive lines, having quickly buried a few light-anti personnel jumping fragmentation mines in the sand in front of the convicts. They turned, and pointed their own rifles outwards, waiting to spring the trap.

The 4th Ranger Battallion advanced well under the conditions. Some of the soldiers began to wonder why this being so easy for them. It had been 6 hours since the begginning of the race and they had already traveled close to 17 miles. However the men were starting to get somewhat tired from this feverish pace. When the battallion moved into a small wooded area sheltered on all sides by hills, creating a sort of bowl LtCol Avraam decided it was time to stop for a break and reorganize.

"Alpha company, Bravo company, take a breather. 15 minutes." He then opened a secure channel between him and members of ForceRecon radioed two squads of the scouts which were up to a mile and a half ahead of them, "Ghost-Two and Ghost-Five, head north and scout out enemy movements, report back anything of importance, I want to know exactly where they are in relation to us"

"Right away sir"

"Roger that"
"Copy that"

The men are hand picked from the armed forces and are some of the finest marksmen and scouts the military has to offer. Prior Kurono nearly buried himself again when he heard the sound of mortars firing. There was no way that the enemy had spotted them, especially with their OLEDs. All they'd see was a sand dune. So then, who's the target...

Halting the maniples with a gesture, he pulled out his laptop, and keyed up the sattelite uplink. Scrolling around, the program quickly found the hotspots of recently fired mortar tubes.

Gotcha...

Zooming in, he could see the competitors, taking cover behind sand bags, machine guns at the ready. Now, what the hell are they firing at... Scrolling more, he nearly missed the heat signatures of the convicts approaching the dug in soldiers, only tipped off by their movement.

He tapped out a message to the mortar crews, who had already set up their own batteries to return fire if neccessary, issuing orders to fire a salvo of gas rounds into the convict ranks. The first barrage would be corromis, to neutralize any NBC defenses, followed by a wave of mixed ordinance: DMSO, Frost, and BZ gas. Hearing the first salvo from the mortar Centuries, the Prior smiled at the irony: The poor bastards would freeze to death in the middle of a desert. Assuming, of course, that they didn't shoot each other first...

The mortar crews could accurately range tehir mortars in, lined them up, and loaded them with more CS and pepper spray shells, but with thermium-nitrate high-explosive fragmentation AP rounds right next to them, ready to fire if a single round strayed within ten metres of their front lines.
