The following letter handily materialized on the doorstep (or local equivalent) of a number of various national leaders:

Greetings,
Having conducted a few test flights into space, the nation of Harmonia Mortus is pleased to have discovered that not only is it not alone, but there are other beings crazy enough to dare the void and all of its hazards.
In the interest of international friendship and possible collaberation in terms of trade or defence, Harmonia Mortus is pleased to invite you to attend a meeting in Harmonia Mortus, to take place within the week. Enclosed you will find the coordinates of the meeting and the approach patterns to the planet.
It is advised that you bring landing shuttles as our port facilities cannot house ships over 45 meters in length comfortably
Please respond soon, he letters are unfourtunatly messy to send and we only have so many Goblins.

Sheogorath, Grand Prince of Harmonia Mortus

"Why'd you say Goblins?"
"'Cause some people dont like the idea that rabbit blood poweres our postal system."
"At least we found a use for the damn things."

"Regretfully, I'm not." Captain Roscoe commented with a straight face as his XO studied him for any trace of a prank.
"Guess that explains the pair of commandos and extra marines." Commander O'Leary said with a shake of her head, before brushing a strand of pale blue hair out of her eyes. Turning her head slightly to address Vince, "Lets go pay a call on these goblin powered people."

With a flicker Vince disappeared only to reappear a short while later in the given system and began following the approach patterns while sending a message tot he planet.

Approaching shuttles, welcome to Harmonia Mortus. Your landing pattern is being illuminated now, stay between the lanterns. It is advised that any thaumic-based devices on your ship should be deactivated for the duration of your approach due to high levels of thaumic background activity above the spaceport. Once your in the atmosphere you should be able to spot the landing pads.

As the tramsission ended, a long line of blue spheres lit up, leading from the ships current position to the planet. Just visible inside each one was a Goblin, a lantern and several plants. The Goblins were fiddling with what appeared to be crystals in gyrocages inside the spheres, which seemed to direct the motion of the small craft.

Sheogorath's eyebrow twitched.
"Looks like the 'Sephiroth' thing is wanting a fight, theyre acting like it." A young-ish thaumaturgist polished at the large crystal in front of him, trying to work out a stain of some kind.
Nodding, Sheogorath grumbled, "You send people a polite invitation and they get all huffy over a few minor sacrifices. Its probobly best to just ignore them, I imagine all they want is attention."
The thaumaturgist coughed, "Is that wise? I mean, its a big ship."
"Yes, and Mehrunes is a giant with four arms who pretty much cant be killed. Besides, didnt you say something about the high thaumic content of the atmosphere deflecting most forms of energy?"
"Well...yes," The thaumaturgist was sweating slightly now, "But the thing is, were not sure what kinds it WONT deflect."
Shaking his head slightly, Sheogorath turned, "Keep monitoring the situation. I will go and receive our guests. Inform the Skyship corps to be on alert, if they try to land we can blast them out of the sky."
"Milord."

---

Sheogorath arrived at the recently constructed spaceport almost instantly, having near-godlike powers within his own domain had certain benifits. The command center in the castle required somewhat subdued garments, usually he wore a fairly simple jumpsuit, but his prefered form, that of a roughly 17th century merchant or banker, was the norm everywhere else. Nobody knew exactly why, but somehow it suited him.
Looking upward, Sheogorath could just make out the distant dots that marked the descending shuttles.
Smiling, he thought to himself that this event might well put Harmonia Mortus on the map.

The three Bengal shuttles landed lightly, almost gracefully on the ground. For all that they gave off the impression of birds of prey ready to strike, which was only appropriate as the Bengal shuttle was more fully known as the Bengal MKIII Assault Ship and the favorite of the fourty marines that were presently residing within.

From the holds of the three disgorged fourty marines in light armour, sidearms ported, while following the five others that stepped out composed the diplomatic team and the commandos.

One of the five, a blue-eyed blonde, stepped forwards, "Are you hte one who sent out the message?" She asked in dulcet tones.

Varduk Myandariin examined the letter carefully, both the message it bore and the traces of magic that remained on the paper. He found both interesting - certainly more so than his day to day existance. With no war currently in progress, and the patterns of his rule impressed upon his people over the course of many centuries, there was little enough for him to do. If something of importance came up, his subordinates knew how to get in touch with him.

Turing over the letter, he wrote a brief reply on the back, folded it, and enacted a quick 'return to sender' spell. As the paper vanished with a flash of crimson flame, Varduk strode off, making the arrangements for his departure.

Greeting, Grand Prince Sheogorath.
Your invitation intrigues me, as does its method of delivery. I shall be present.
-Varduk Myandariin, Highest of the D'zukaru, Supreme Master of the Vaxintorians.

It was not long after this that the Vaxintorian flagship, the D'zer'kar, arrived at the outskirts of the system with a flash of blue light. The massive vessel, which looked more like a pile of heavily armed space junk pieced together from some old battlefield (or possibly several) than an actual warship, could still move far faster than any shuttle the Vaxintorians possessed. As Varduk departed the D'zer'kar in a 30 meter shuttle, the captain of his great ship kept a wary eye on the Doombringer, which looked like potential trouble.

"Shall we proceed?" Nicole asked as she nodded slightly at the message.

"Indeed, follow me."
The various delegates were escorted through the various layers of defence rings that surrounded the governmental seat of Harmonia Mortus, in this case a rather large castle.
It was not a friendly castle.
It was, in fact, a decidedly unfriendly castle which was clearly designed to divide the world into 'inside' and 'outside', those 'outside' were not welcomed 'inside'. From each defensive ring wall rose a defensive shield, forming twelve concentric circles above the castle itself, creating a shimmering effect against the sky.
The delegates were, once inside, taken to a large hall in the center of which was a rather large hole with no clear bottom. A rope had been set up around it and a Goblin was wandering around the edge wearing a sandwich board which read, "Do not spit into the portal to Oblivion".
The remaining space was mostly table and chairs.
"Please, be seated. Your guards may remain by the door. Now, we must await the other arrivals. I understand the Sephrioth ship has decided to send a representative. It should be interesting to see what they have to say."

One of the marines, indistinguishable from the rest in the armour gave a half-nod and replied, "Johns, Oppen, Bartho, Nicoli, Stevenson, you heard the lady."

The five named marines seperated and took a stance behind the others. "How about we get to know each other a little better while we wait?" Nicole suggested

It was easy enough to turn off most thaumic devices on the Vaxintorian shuttle, but even the drives had some magical components. Varduk supplemented the built in filters with his own work, making sure that all of his equipment was thoroughly isolated from its surroundings, and this seemed to prevent any problems.

The vessel was built from the wreckage of an Imperial assault shuttle, which had been seared through some 21 meters from the front. The entire back portion of the ship had been rebuilt, the top of the ship had been torn open and modified to make more room for the tall Vaxintorian soldiers, and most of the equipment and weapons had been replaced, but the basic structure of the scarred and battered shuttle was still visible through the armor its current owners had tacked onto the outside. Blue light pooled around the vessel as it settled gently to the ground, and then its great door ground open.

By rights, Varduk's emergence from this door should have been slow and awkward, if not downright impossible. Somehow, however, the D'zukaru managed to squeeze through an opening a third his height and half the width of his shoulders in one smooth, graceful motion. Not bothering with stairs or boarding ramp, he simply dropped to the ground and straightened easily. Varduk Myandariin usually choose a humanoid form, with red skin, two curving horns, and a long, barbed tail; this time was no exception. He was dressed in clothing that seemed woven of pure darkness, which left his clawed feet and fore-arms bare; a long black cloak hung about his shoulders.

The D'zukaru chief greeted his host and the other visitor politely, and followed them to the castle. As he walked, Varduk gradually shrank until he more closely matched human size. Shifting size was much more difficult than changing shape for his kind.
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux
01-09-2006, 01:18
"Ah, our other visitors are here as well. The Sephirothian delegation may just have to do with written reports." Sheogorath sniffed mumbled something. With a sound something along the lines of 'phoot' another figure, singificantly taller than those present appeared, addressing the wall of muscle behind him, Sheogorath said, "This is Mehrunes Dagon, my military...attache. Mehrunes, downsize please, none of these people are impressed."
Another 'phoot' and Mehrunes was about human sized, although still shaped like a body builder, he grinned widely, "Sorry, I just get excited when company arrives. Those other villages are pacified by the way, some of 'em tried to pacify back, but we showed 'em."
"Thank you Mehrunes. Please, sit down. Im sure the others who are interested will be along shortly. Now..."
Another gesture from Sheogorath resulted in a set of doors swinging open. Six mages escorted what appeared to be a large crystal ball in, carefully manuvering it with subtle gestures until it was positioned in the middle of the table. Once in position the ball hummed slightly and gave off a faint white light.
"This, as you may well have guessed, is a crystal ball. It is rather like a camera. Of course most are much smaller than this, but we felt that we could provide one for this occasion so that all of you would have a clear picture of what we wanted to show you."
"You are most likely unfamiliar with the history of this plane. Skipping the boring parts and getting right down to the important stuff will save us several weeks of tedious ramblings, so that is what I shall do."
"The important stuff starts about one thosand years ago, when the plane was divided between the so-called 'Demons' (that would be myself, Mehrunes and the others), their followers, and the Sunlit Kingdom. Various epic battles took place but the details are not important. During the reign of Cyril the Great, as the humans called him, we suffered our worst defeat. Cyril was what is generally termed a planeswalker, he could move between universes and planets at will and, with enough power, create planes.
"Cyril sought to end the war on his terms, as the Sunlit Kingdom was on the verge of breaking, its lines were stretched rather thin and its supplies of mana were dangerously short.
"Cyril invited us, the twelve most powerful Princes, to a meeting where, skipping the assorted veiled threats and insults, he locked us and our armies into a plane of his own devising called Oblivion by most. Once there, he sealed the doorway with his own blood and called upon his people to ensure that we never again escaped from our imprisonment.
"Generally such a spell lasts forever, however, Cyril did not appreciate the full extent of blood magic. The Sunlit Kingdom gradually deteriorated, its people grew weak and the roya bloodline of its rulers thinned out, the last king, the so-called 'Reginald the Just' was essentially a vegetable, the people were lazy, and we took the opportunity afforded us, escaping from Oblivion via the very portal you see in this hallway." Sheogorath gestured to the great hole in the floor, "It was a trying time and, alas, much blood was shed, but we have now secured much of this plane, only a few outlying cities present us with any challenge now, and our armies are rapidly pacifying the rebel groups that remain.
"We also took it upon ourselves to modify the castle somewhat. It was rather...fruity when we arrived.
"Anyway, to buisness. Well...does anybody have any questions first? I suppose somebody must."

Sheogorath considered for a moment, then nodded, "Indeed. Mehrunes did enjoy himself so. And were still grinding, if you must know."

Varduk grinned, showing dagger-like teeth.

"And perhaps he did contact such nations. I think you may be judging our host too quickly, though. He and his people were imprisoned for centuries, through treachery carried out at a meeting between leaders, presumably under truce. That they even atttended this meeting indicates that they were willing to consider a peaceful resolution to that war. Is it not to his credit that he is willing to discuss matters with those of a different... political persuasion... after what he has suffered?"

Turning back to Sheogorath, he added, "Please accept my congratulations on your return and victory, by the way. I understand how frustrating it can be to get locked away."

She didn't bat an eyelash at the sight of the teeth and simply replied, "Vengence upon the decendents of the perpetrators of an injustice is as reprehensible as breaking the flag of truce." She replied, "And it does bespeak a lack of external xenophobia, but by thier own admission they retain thier internal xenophobia."

"By grinding people under the proverbial boot-heel, it simply engenders further hatred and violence and will almost inevitably lead to future problems." She added as the only way to avoid those problems would be apologizing, something few goverments could do, or absolute genocide and that was condemned by many nations.

"A valid point, I suppose." he replied with a shrug. "Especially if you assume that their motive was vengeance. It seems clear, though, that no peace agreement was actually concluded in that meeting. From the point of view of our host and his friends, the war simply never ended. Is it their fault that their foes grew weak during the time of their absence? As for future problems, perhaps once the situation has settled they will develop a more amicable relationship with their subjects. Perhaps some new home can be found for those who used to live here. There are other possible solutions, I am sure.

"We have no intention of totally wiping out the current humans, nor have we any intention of carrying our war off of this planet. Presently our intention is to secure this plane and no more." Sheogorath nodded to the Vaxintorian, "As to further problems...we do not think they will be an issue, those who resisted were killed in the interest of preventing this whole affair from happening again. Beleive it or not, we are not predisposed towards violence as a means to our goal, otherwise you would not be here. Violence only damages the land and our reserves of magical energies, every death causes damage to our supplies, thus we are only killing those who we have to, although Mehrunes does get carried away sometimes" Sheogorath cast a sideways glance at the four-armed man next to him.
"Anyway, that aside, our present purpose is peaceful. While technological trade would not work in our favour, we find that technological devices do not function well in a thaumic field unless heavily shielded, we do have several resources which you would perhaps be interested in, large supplies of Octirion and Octigen gas. Octirion is a superdense metal, which, once properly forged, is quite nearly indestructable, our own experiments required a terrathaum beam to pierce properly forged Octirion one inch thick. Octigen is...well, think of it as a Royal Gas. It doesnt react with anything.
"Aside from that, we have a number of fairly mundane resources in large supply, mostly unexploited. We plan on transporting more Goblins over to establish mines and camps. In fact, one such operation is already underway, if you would care to view it, we can leave now, it should only take an hour or so."

01-09-2006, 16:31
"If what you say is true, then while perhaps a tad excessive, is no worse than many nations." She replied, "And it seems that either this room is 'warded' as you put it, or the interference is not as much an issue as you make it out to be, at least relative to our technologies."

"In regard to trade for resources, prior to any deal for Octirion and Octigen gas, they would have to be tested to see thier effectiveness relative to our present materials, and save for the most rare minerals, trade for the rest would be unprofitable. I would be interested to see how you extract the ores from the ground however."

The group was escorted outside where, floating in midair as if it was perfectly natural, a galleon was moored to a tower a hundred feet up.

"Hmph, most people are at least a little curious about how the skyships work when they first see them. Ah well, first time for everything I suppose. Sheogorath nodded, "It will take a few minutes to reach our destination, refreshments will be served shortly."

Cruising over the mines the galleon was an odd sight, on many worlds it would have caused significant comment. The Goblin labourers below didnt even look up.
"The main challenge in mining Octirion is that, as I noted, its practically indestructable. Any explosive powerful enough to break it up would collapse most of the mine network, and pickaxes dont work well either. We cant magic it out either because of the ores own magical properties. That basically means that there are two options. A pit mine, where we can use a winch to haul the ore out in great chunks to be melted in large furnaces, or tunnel mines where we locate fragments of ore and go around the larger pieces. Usually we tunnel to find the smaller chunks while mapping out the larger ore deposits so that we know where to look, then mine each one out individually, rather than digging a huge pit."
"Fourtunatly mining Octirion is a relativly safe buisness, it is usually only found in quite solid dirt and stone, very few gas or water pockets."
"Octirions main uses are armour and, less so, weapons. It reflects or simply absorbs most forms of energy, especially magic. It is also dense enough that large scale kinetic weapons are the only sort that will damage it."
"Forging it is quite difficult, because of its...unique nature Octirion will 'remember' its shape if forged correctly. IF a conventional smith were to forge a sword of Octirion (assuming he had a furnace hot enough), it would simply revert to its natural shape. Proper forging requires two mages in attendance to perform the spells required to prevent the metal from deforming. If this is done, our theoretical blacksmith could forge a blade that would not need to be sharpened for a thosand years. Octirion does not rust and only corrodes when exposed to a high-end fusion reaction for about ten years."
Theao
02-09-2006, 03:58
"Why ask a question when the answer isn't needed. As you've said the technology that you've developed has been tempermental and you have been forced to rely on magic. As such it would stand to reason that failing a zepplin style ballon, then magic would be the power source." Nicole replied calmly as they headed to the vessel.

"It would be interesting to see the composition of your metal as appears to have some interesting properties. If I understand correctly, if deformed outside of your process it self-liquidizes?"
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux
02-09-2006, 04:45
"It does not liquidize, it returns to its previous shape when exposed sunlight. The sword from the previous example would turn back into a chunk of non descript metal, usually in ingot form as that is how it appears out of the furnace, very rarely it returns to its natural state of 'lumpiness'."
Theao
02-09-2006, 04:55
"I would have to see what you mean as without at least partial liquidization it would be very difficult for matter to alter it's form under regular conditions." She commented as she wondered if he was trying to snow her.
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux
02-09-2006, 05:00
"Its fairly simple, it goes from one shape to another, I understand many humans find the transition quite...unpleasant to view. Apparently its like having your optic nerves tweaked. You must realize that magic often fails to observe 'regular conditions', if it did, this ship would not be flying."
Theao
02-09-2006, 05:23
"Even magic falls under the rules, rendering it as well as the force, psionics and all other oft called supernatural abilities, provided one has the willingness to study a subject sufficiantly." After a brief pause, she continued, "There is afterall only one true universal rule, there are no universal rules."

"Indeed, however, magic seems to obey its own rules that it makes up as it goes, and which usually have little relation to every day rules." Turning, he smiled brightly at the Sephrioth delegate, "And if you do not stop that, I will throw you from this ship, and then allow Mehrunes to have his way with you."

Sheogorath rolled his eyes, "I am aware of who you are, you told us. As to our plans, you already know them, we told you back in the hall. If you plan to kill me though, you will have to try much harder than that, as I dont have a heart, or any organs for that matter.
"However, I do know that it is generally considered impolite to attempt to rummage around in peoples minds. Do not do it again."

(well fine then :P)

"That concludes this particular portion of the tour, the Octigen extractors are fairly boring and run of the mill, and mostly underground. Unless you wish to make a half mile trek in a four foot high tunnel I suggest that we return to the castle now." Sheogorath delivered a nod to the helmsman, who put the ship into a slow turn to avoid excessive roll, potentially tipping the passengers off the ship.
"Octigen is a unique gas, mostly for the fact that it simply does not react with anything, excepting magic. It does not expand in heat or condense in cold, it does not interact with any form of matter, energy or plasma that we know of. Its usefullness lies in its ability to ampllify magic hugely.
"Say you were to cast a standard spell to summon, say, a pigeon in cloud of octigen gas. Not only would that pigeon be approximatly a hundred feet tall when summoned, it would most likely also possess psychic powers and the ability to shoot fireballs from its mouth. Of course the effect is usually random, it might also be two dimensional and deep fried. Regardless, the effect is random, there is no way of controlling it, many mages who were simply trying to light a cigarette found themselves bereft of eyebrows and their hats.
"Of course, there is a way to harness the gasses properties, the most obvious being the beam cannons. Combining a form of plasma with magic yields a fairly powerful beam, it travels in a straight line and imparts significant damage on most forms of matter, and it has few of the unpleasant side effects of 'raw' magical discharges, such as your ship turning into a bowling ball. When passed through a tube of Octigen the gas accelerates and intensifies the already powerful beam of the cannon, giving us a handy weapon in addition to the enhanced cannons and mellee devices we already possess."

"It sounds interesting, but if it installs the risk of a potentially catastrophic reaction, it would not go over well with the people in the navy." She commented after listening to the explaination of the materials.
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux
06-09-2006, 21:07
"Unfourtunatly, due to the random nature of the reaction it is difficult to harness Octirion in its natural state for this use, as I said, a mage may create a massive fireball, or may simply turn himself into a newt. You may perhaps find use for it as a coolant or in applications where a non-reactive atmosphere is required, it is not terribly expensive and is avalible in large amounts."

06-09-2006, 21:46
"Prior to that, it would be necessary for our scientists and technicians to run an extensive body of tests under a variety of conditions. You don't want something to explode when it's turned on afterall." She commented
[NS:]Harmonia Mortus Redux
06-09-2006, 22:14
"It is unfourtunatly common when dealing with alchemists and mages. You summon the wrong Dread Lord of Doom from the lower planes of Oblivion, and he explodes your tower because you didnt put down the right sigils. Its expensive in wizards, of course the new GR/S system can help prevent major damage to surrounding areas."

"Magic is hardly religion. It is an unexplored and neglected field of science, it even obeys certain rules on occasion." Sheogorath nodded at the Thean (Theaoan? Theonian? Whatever :P), "However, if you wish for a display to prove that your silly weapons are inneffective, please, attack me. I will not harm you."

"Fighting experience?" Sheogorath laughed "None at all. I pay other people to fight for me. That is not what I had in mind though." Sheogorath smiled, then vanished.
"Now then...how do you plan on attacking me? Your Force will not affect me, as I am not 'alive' by any biological standard and I have no body or centralized area of thought to attack." Now Sheogorath's voice appeared in the heads of those listening, not bothering with the assorted wax-encrusted organs on the way, "This form has its limitations though. I can only communicate by thought and manipulating objects in the world, which is difficult. Magic is easier in this form though."

OOC: @#$%&!!! Some helpful person accidently kicked the power cord of my laptop today, and I later discovered that the charger is now nonfunctional. I've got an hour of battery power, and I can borrow a charger once in a while, but my posting will be infrequent until I can get it replaced. Please forgive me, and move Varduk as needed to prevent delays. He'll want to examine an octiron sample at some point, by the way.
