My Country

The love of field and coppice
Of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance,
Brown streams and soft, dim skies
I know, but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

The stark white ring-barked forests,
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops,
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us
We see the cattle die
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine
She pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gazeā€¦

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand
though Earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

ooc: If you want accurate names I'll look them up later. For now I'm just warming up

*It was another quiet winter's day in the city of Melbourne. For once during this time, it was not raining thanks to a late breeze blowing in from the harsh open plains of north western Victoria.*

*The Australian treasurer had decided to keep his old office after his country came into being a few years ago. Back then as the head of the Victorian trade and accounts department he had spent many a day going over the colonial accounts making sure everything fit the bill and where improvements would be needed. Today, not much had changed. He still balanced accounts, only now he did it from all over the country.*

*At least he had more lackeys these days.*

*It was during on of these heavy number crunching sessions that the domestic trade minister made his enterence, unannounced as always.*

"Bloody hell Bill, how many times do I have to repeat myself? Don't bloody interrupt me when I'm in the middle of budgeting!"

"You're always in the middle of budgeting... anyway I thought you might be interested in having a look at this."

"*Sigh* Fine. Let's see what you're all excited about..."

*Mark Haragan took hold of the item that the enthusastic trade minister had all but thrust into his face. It was a leather document wallet, nothing overly fancy, and inside sure enough was a pile of faded documents. The title on the front proudly proclaimed: "Pacific Trade Agreement - 1907"*

*Mark dropped the folder on his desk and held his head in his hands. He could feel another one of those familiar headaches coming on.*

"...what?"

*Mark looked up at the man in front of him pretending - poorly - to act confused.*

"You bloody well know what. We've been through this before."

"Look if you'll just hear me ou-"

"First of all, it's almost August so I doubt this thing would be wrapped up by the end of this year."

"Now I know th-"

"Second and most importantly, you'll need the endorsement of several nations for this even to get a look in not to mention getting it through cabinet-"

"I have."

"Then there is- wait what? What do you mean you have? You saying cabinet actually approves of this pipe dream?"

*Bill Harris stood back, standing as straight as possible with a very smug look on his face. Mark had never before seen anyone look so pleased with himself.*

"Yes, but not only that I've organised through our foreign department a meeting of a number of foreign dignitaries on our shores to discuss the details."

"Through our- mate, your cousin Jimmy does NOT count as 'our foreign department'. At any rate why the hell am I only hearing of this now?"

"You didn't want to be disturbed remember?"

"Oh bloody hell..."

"Also if we had an official department I would've used it."

"Are you- mate, this is the Dominion of Australia, not a bloody republic. Hell why are we even discussing this? How the hell does your cousin Jimmy get the ears of foreign dignitaries, wait no. Stop. Don't tell me. I don't want to know."

"...no. No you don't. In any case it doesn't matter. I have full cabinet support on this, just recently they sent out a petition to mother england so we can have more such deals."

"And if they refuse to allow such dealings?"

"Well by the time any response of the sort gets back here it will be too late."

"God blimey..."

"Hey mate, what's the big deal? You should be happy! I'm putting more money into the coffers!"

"Not bloody yet your not!"

"Come on mate, don't stress. This is state approved, no need to be thinking of paddling up the creek just yet. Come, let me get you a beer. This is celebration time!"

"Celebration time!! Mate, we'll see just how much celebration I'll be doing when I have to deal with the clerical mess these dealings are sure to create!"

"Mate. Beer. On me. You need it."

"...fine. But this better bloody work out."

Pending the new "competition" with the United States, the Governor-General requests that any spare points that Australia has either be loaned off for profit, invested in the economy in the form of merchant marine, or, preferably, sent to Britain to be used to assist in the modernization of the Navy.

OOC: Not sure if you know this or not, but I'm still paying for your army.

ooc: I thought it was just the navy?

*The Australian Parliament is more than happy to contribute to the prosperity of the empire, eagerly pointing out the number of different policies it has in place to help further the economy.*

(Note - by the time I complete the first production facility I'll be at my production maximum... suggestions as to where to 'invest' these extra points would be more than welcome).

you can build production centers as a market economy... examples Tennessee Valley Authority, government investment in aerospace and naval construction, tax breaks, loans, credits etc

its just that they are expensive

Huh? Really? Might wanna change this then...

"Industrial centers may be built (for 48 points or 24 points if built to replace a resource area) or repaired (for 12 points). In addition, 2 damaged industrial centers can be combined (reflects salvage efforts) to form 1 undamaged industrial center. This represents direct government spending on industrialization, and only command economies may build industrial centers in their own countries. (as its direct competition with the free market). No more then 5 production centers a year may be added in this way by any one country."

Note - I have been informed that as a result of 1913 resource exploration +6 resource has been added to the countries economy.

That means therefore,
+ 6 build points (I'll save that for next year)
Growth is in fact, 0.0265 + (25.375 x 0.05) = 1.26875

*In a message to the Australian populace and the world in general, the government has announced that it intends on organising and funding a number of expeditions to various locations for both scientific and economic interest.

Amongst areas indictated are the following areas of interest:

* Papua (exploration of the internal regions; scientific and economic interest)
* Antarctica (exploration; scientific interest)
* North Western Australia (the Kimberlies, scientific survey each for botany and geology; scientific interest)

When asked how the government intended to fund such extravagant ventures and why, a speech on the recent boost in mining projects due to the labor government's dedication to exploration of the interior and the recent global focus on exploration due to the Antarctic dispute is used to highlight both the importance and opportunism of such projects.

The news is expected to be met well by the Australian Scientific Community which is always often on the look out for grants and funding.*
