The Death of an Icon [Earth II Only]

As the lazy moon slowly sank in the night sky, sadness would soon shake the Republic to its core. The day started as slow as any in the heat of summer slowly loosened its grip on Stockholm. Defense Minister Gordon Wells began each day reading over the usual reports over a much needed cup or coffee. As he scanned the boorish news of events in seemingly unimportant third world countries, the telephone rang.

“Hello, yes this is Wells. What is it? Which hospital is he at? I will ring my driver immediately! Good bye!”

Gordon rushed to put on his clothes as he scrambled about is sprawling suburban flat. Immediately he called out to his Aide. “Charles, get my car out front ASAP Prime Minister Wales has been taken to Merciful Rhodes Military Hospital. Apparently he was unresponsive to the medical escort on the way in. Hurry man!”

Wells nervously began to sweat in the backseat of his Mercedes. The driver weaved through traffic with speed and agility. As they approached the edge of the Military Hospital property, a small infared tag was scanned granting instant access into the complex. Quickly they slid into the cordoned off area around the entrance of the facility. DM Wells sprang from the car blurting instructions to the plain-clothes security team belonging to PM Wales. “Men seal these entrances, we don’t want this to turn into a press circus. We are on a military installation but those fools may try and get in here.”

DM Wells took long strides as he entered the long corridor marked along the walls with decorations adorning many famous surgeons and doctors of the military realm. As he approached the team doctors assembled in the small waiting area of the Operating Room he asked, “Who’s in charge here?”

Doctor Mira Dorme stepped forward. “I am Defense Minister. I have a SITREP for you and it’s, well bad.”

“Let me have it doctor, I have some decisions to make today that are obviously going to be tough.”, blurted out DM Wells.

“Well Defense Minister Prime Minister Wales arrived here at approximately 8am in an unconscious state. We had a faint pulse upon arrival and exhausted all possible options to revive PM Wales. We fought through 3 separate heart attacks on the operating table trying to stabilize the Prime Minister. After over an hour of emergency CPR and electroshock attempts we had to call the time of death on Prime Minister Wales at 9:17 AM sir.”

The color left Gordon’s face, a white pale was followed by an acute sense of nausea. Wales dead, so sudden, what to do, whom to call, how to tell the nation? Everything hit him at once. With the poker face of a politician he stated, “I need a moment with him.”

“Certainly sir, right this way.” Doctor Dorme led Wells into the room that had been vacated by the staff. Prime Minister Wales lay motionless on the table still attached to the machines that had so frantically tried to save his life. As the doctor’s closed the doors behind DM Wells he knelt on the floor and sobbed. The loss of a great friend of so many years was hard on him. They had been through the gauntlet together through thick and thin. As Gordon softly prayed for the salvation of Wales in a higher place he asked one solemn prayer. “Lord grant me the wisdom to lead in the manner in which you see fit. May your advice and wisdom shine down on me in my moment of despair and may the Republic move forward from the loss.”

Wells emerged from the cold room a changed person. He immediately began to take control of the situation by calling some of the security detail to his side.

“Contact the UnderSecretary of State. I want them to begin the failsafe plan for a dignitary funeral. We are to honor this man by allowing him to lie in state at the capital for one week. We have a nation that will need healing. Inform the UnderSecretary that there office will handle all arrangements for foreign leaders that wish to attend. Coordinate with MI-9 for security details, your office liason can handle those items. I will draft a speech to address the nation shortly. Inform all federal buildings and institutions flags will be at half staff for one month following my announcement. I will share this tragic news personally with the leaders in the House and the Senate. Get it done.”

The agents scurried off to handle there tasks as DM Wells returned to his waiting car and sped towards the office to address the nation.

Live Feed in three, two, one....

We interrupt this broadcast to bring you a special news alert from the Desk of Defense Minister Gordon Wells…………………………………………………..

Good Morning fellow Hawdawgians, I join you this morning not to bring you news of joy but of sadness. At 9:15 AM this morning we lost the larger than life leader of our nation Prime Minister Josey Wales. The gallant efforts of our experts at Merciful Rhodes Military Hospital worked throughout the morning to bring our beloved leader back to us. Unfortunately a higher power had decided that it was indeed time for PM Wales to join him in a better place. When I reflect back on the man he was I see a vision of how he transformed the nation into a bastion of free-trade and economic might through the hard work and toil of Hawdawg citizens and government officials alike. Join me in mourning this loss of a true friend and patriot. We shall in time move on but we shall never forget the man the iconic Prime Minister Josey Wales.

Say a prayer with him and for Hawdawg as we morn this loss together.

End of feed.

The news was recieved in the Foreign Ministry's European Section and analysed quickly. Immediately, it was classified priority RED, something which meant that it had to be in the hands of the Prime Minister within fifteen minutes. The news was faxed from the Foreign Ministry via an encrypted line to the Prime Ministers apartment in the western areas of Oslo, the best place to live in the city with multi-million dollar villas and vast parks for the inhabitants and the public. There, the security detail of the Prime Minister skimmed it before moving into the dining room where Prime Minister Thomas Rothsky and his family was getting ready to eat dinner.

"Statsminister, det har skjedd noe i Hawdawg." [Prime Minister, something's happened in Hawdawg.] the man said as he handed the Prime Minister the fax. Rothsky read it quickly and froze completely, the words repeating themselves in his brain: "...Prime Minister Wales of Hawdawg has been declared dead as the result of a series of heart attacks..."

"Statsminister?" [Prime Minister?]

"Vi må informere Kongen og Regjeringen med en gang. Få kjørt ut bilen min." [We must inform the King and the Cabinet immediately. Get my car ready.]

"Javel Statsminister." [Yes Prime Minister.]

The security officer exited the room and made the necessary call, having the black up-armored Mercedes S550 driven out from the garage and out front. After having dressed and called ahead to the Palace to have the King expect him, Rothsky appeared, dressed in a black suit with a white shirt and a black tie, clothes of mourning. Wales had been a close friend of Rothsky, and Rothsky mourned the loss.

After a twenty minute drive through Oslo with two police motorcycles and a Volvo XC 70 police car as escorts, the Mercedes rolled up in front of the Royal Palace, the soldiers of His Majesty the King's Guards presenting arms as the Mercedes rolled under the arch and stopped, allowing a soldier to open the door for the Prime Minister.

After ascending the stairs quickly, the Prime Minister was escorted to the King's personal penthouse flat on the fifth floor of the Palace, where the King awaited. The two met, and Rothsky informed the King of the tragic loss in the neighboring country. After a quick conversation, Defense Minister Alvheim and Foreign Minister Jensen arrived as well, and the four agreed on a message to send their neighbours.

[ooc: I am nearing a breakthrough for Saint Lazare, just a little longer until Jolt lets me on...]

The Grand Duchy of Saint Lazare sends its most sincere condolences to the Hawdawg Republic and its people, as one of its most esteemed leaders has passed on, hopefully to more peaceable circumstances than life can give. Prime Minister Josey Wales - while not particularly prominent among our court, perhaps to our own detriment - has left deeply embellished mark the world and passing his memory will likely be as hard as his own passing. The man is respected a noted leader, a gracious leader, a beneficient leader, and a competent leader. He has done his nation many years of service, and we only hope that the subsequent leader shall likewise follow in his footsteps to bring the Hawdawg nation prosperity and prominence.

The sky was heavy with a damp air throughout Stockholm. Scarcely eight hours before Defense Minister Gordon Wells had broadcast the news that stopped a nation in its tracks. All through the city businesses had closed at noon, many citizens openly wept on commuter trains and in public places. All along the gates of the Prime Minister’s residence an impromptu wall of flowers had enveloped the brick mosaic columns and ornate fences. Posters, flowers, and cards of solace soon completely filled the sidewalk and still they came to lay small trinkets at the doorstep of the man so influential in there daily lives. As light gave way to dark, groups of students descended upon the Complex marching silently along the streets edge. Each carried a single candle wrapped in a small cardboard stand. As one group arrived and left there burning candles, other groups arrived from all over the city standing at attention and in awe of the spectacle unfolding before there eyes. Whole congregations of churches arrived and began to sign hymns in honor of the fallen leader. As the crowd grew larger local police carefully cordoned off the streets to accommodate the groundswell of emotion that swept over the people of Stockholm. Throughout the Nation, television stations carried tributes to Wales, showing the achievements of the leader and how far the nation had come with the legendary leader.

Residence of the Defense Minister

Gordon slowly paced about his study it seemed like ages ago he had made his first official speech to the nation. He kept going over his words in mind, wondering if the words had been enough for the people. He didn’t have much time to reflect, all throughout the day, various foreign officials had called on Wells offering condolences and prosperity for Hawdawg. This combined with the monstrous task of the State Funeral and the change of power had consumed most of the day. All said Gordon hadn’t had time to reflect much at all. As his mind wandered staring out the beautiful picture window something caught his eye in the early evening light. Across the circle drive of his home little reflective lights flickered in the dusk evening slowly dancing along the fences. As Wells focused he could see it was the citizens of Hawdawg, groups were passing slowly down the street candles in hand moving towards the residence of the Prime Minister. A tear formed in his eye as he thought to himself how the influence of such a great man would move ordinary people to acts of such courtesy and respect. As he watched from afar his trusted Aide Wallace Kendall came to his side.

Kendall: “This will be a hallowed week to remember sir. Let us not mourn the man, but celebrate his accomplishments.”

Wells: “Indeed Wallace, indeed.”

Kendall: “Sir the Honorable David Combs and both the Senate and House leaders are here to see you. They wish to discuss the plans for the funeral and other matters at hand. I also have news from Cotland, the King and his Prime Minister will attend the funeral. Hirgizstan sends word the Fuhrer will certainly be here to honor PM Wales. Various other nations have offered assistance and will be sending parties to the funeral.”

Wells: “It is good to hear from our closest allies. We have been through many trials and tribulations with our fellow October Alliance members. I want them seated closest to the front Kendall, pass this on to the UnderSecretary. Please tell Judge Combs, Tarver and Kile I will see them know.”

Kendall: “Yes sir, may I ask one thing sir before I do?”

Wells: “Certainly Kendall.”

Kendall: “When do we officially start calling you Prime Minister?”

Wells: “Not until we have ended our official period of mourning Kendall. That will take 30 full days. I know it’s just a formality, but we will honor the legacy of Prime Minister Wales for this time period. Now please show my guests in.”

Kendall promptly left the room and in a few minutes the large mahogany doors of the study opened. As they slowly parted three men entered the room. First to walk forward to shake the hand of Wells was the Honorable David Combs, head of the Hawdawg Supreme Court. Combs, a small man in stature would blend into any ordinary crowd, but when he spoke the riveting voice his frame carried would convince the most uninterested party to tune into what he had to say. Following Combs was House Leader Joseph Tarver. Tarver was imposing at six feet seven inches, a former European Football standout he had hung up his cleats to work on bettering the life of middle income Hawdawgians. Following Tarver was the ever jovial Trevor Kile. Kile always managed to maintain a smile in the light of whatever trouble he faced. His skill at maneuvering legislation into and out of the Senate was legendary. However a smile was far from his face on this sad day.

Combs: “DM Wells my condolences. I know you were a close personal friend of Josey and it is always tough to deal with such a loss that was so sudden. I have met many men in my life but to honestly call myself a friend of Josey and I count myself lucky.”

Wells: “Thank you Judge.”

Tarver: “DM Wells, I have talked to the full house today and we are behind you 100 percent. I asked each of the members to refrain from calling on you to allow you some time to prepare for this ceremony. Many of our members have returned home to comfort there constituents. Is there anything you need the House to do?”

Wells: “Not at this time Tarver. We are making all the necessary arrangements through the office of the UnderSecretary. MI-9, the special security details of the foreign ministry are coordinating the security details. In addition we will have several foreign security teams working in coordination with our departments to make this funeral happen.”

Kile: “Defense Minister I have asked my members to follow the same policy as Tarver has suggested. We have assembled our members and discussed a contingency plan for your replacement. Of course this was done on a hush-hush basis. We will talk more about this in the coming weeks.”

Wells: “Yes Kile keep that information close to the vest. I don’t want any podium pundits running about degrading this national funeral. Gentlemen I have ordered several things to take place starting tomorrow that you will need to be aware of. All federal installations will be closed the remainder of the week. All flags are to be lowered to half-staff for approximately one month. We have invited the highest decorated division of each branch of the Military to Stockholm to march in this funeral. Orders were issued before lunch and these units will begin arriving tomorrow. I expect large numbers of citizens to come to Stockholm for this funeral. Even if PM Wales lies in state for one week, we will see the likes of some 15 million people here. I checked flights out of England, Fiji, Guinea Bissau, and Texas to Stockholm and carriers are reporting 110% capacity with 100% standby loads. People will be coming from everywhere to honor PM Wales. I contacted SONY Trinitron earlier today and they have agreed to assemble large public viewing screens throughout Stockholm to allow the citizens to observe the official proceedings. All major networks will be carrying the event live for citizens that cannot make it to the Capital. It is expected that the tram system and the national rail line will also shut down to observe the funeral. To further honor PM Wales most major businesses have agreed to close next Friday for the Funeral. These are just a few of the details I have been working on today gentlemen and many more decisions are to be made. I really appreciate your calling on me tonight but I must ask you to leave for I have many other things to handle before the night is through.”

All three men bid ado to Defense Minister Wells and left the study. As each slowly pulled away from the house, Wells was once again drawn to the window as more citizens slowly moved by his gated home towards the Prime Minister’s residence. Suddenly he turned and as he moved to the front door of his home he said to Kendall, “There is something I must do tonight Kendall. I will return shortly, hold all my calls.”

Kendall: “Certainly sir.”

Wells walked down the circle drive and approached one of his plain-clothes security officers.

Wells: “I know this is against protocol but I am making an executive decision here. I am going to join these mourners in there silent march to the Prime Ministers home. You can follow or you can stay but I am going. If you go, don’t make a big deal about it, for tonight I am just a fellow Hawdawgian trying to come to grips with the loss of a beloved leader.”

Wells unlocked the walk-thru gate as a small group of people walked up the street. Wells and his security officer mingled with the crowd as they rounded the corner and he was struck by what he saw. As far as the eye could see for five city blocks people stood in silence facing the home of the Prime Minister many began to sign hymns talking of a higher place. As Wells stood in awe a tug at his pants brought him back to reality. A small little girl about age five whispered to him. “Here sir, I have another candle.” As the little girl shared her second candle with Wells he couldn’t hide his emotion. As a tear streaked down his cheek the little girl offered him a handkerchief and said, “It’s okay sir, Mr. Wales is in heaven with my daddy. They are watching us right now.” As Defense Minister Wells stood in the crowd he couldn’t believe the simple words of a child could bring together the moment at hand.

Fuhrer's Personal Residence, Cape Verde

The Fuhrer had taken the morning off to make plans to attend the funeral of PM Wales in Stockholm. He had sorted out flight times and which Fuhrer Guards would attend. He was waiting now, in his office, for confirmation from Hawdawg that everything was arranged for the visit.

The 40 inch plasma-screen TV in the cabinet to the left of the desk was on with the sound low. It was tuned to Hirgizstanian News Corp where they were showing a programme about the life and times of Josey Wales. Right now they were showing excerpts from a speech made some years ago. The Fuhrer remembered seeing it before.

The flags all over the country were ordered to half-mast the previous afternoon and a two-minute silence was organised for noon the next day. Not surprisingly, Hirgizstanians had reacted to the news with shock, as Wales was one of the better known world-statesman, and a charismatic one at that.

As the Fuhrer watched the speech on the TV, an aide slowly walked into the room, bowed his head slightly and said "My Fuhrer, I have the information you requested." The Fuhrer turned his gaze to the young man in the centre of the room and nodded at him. The young man spoke, "The official period of mourning in Hawdawg will last for thirty days, and after that it is believed that Defense Minister Wells will become Prime Minister."

The Fuhrer nodded, "Ah...Wells, a good man. Is that everything?" The aide nodded, bowed his head slightly and left the room. The Fuhrer turned up the sound on the TV and listened to a younger Josey Wales give a speech.

Residence of the Defense Minister

In what seemed like a dream Wells awoke to the noise of his fax machine. As Wells rose and dressed, he began to mull over his activities for the day. Almost as on cue Kendall greeted Gordon in his study with a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Kendall: “I thought you might need this sir. Here are the faxes from UnderSecretary Knowles. The Fuhrer of Hirgizstan has asked for personal confirmation on the funeral arrival, procession, etc. The UnderSecretary has arranged all the seating and assignments in the Cathedral. He thought you might want to send a note to the TOA members about the arrangements personally.”

Wells: “Yes that is a good idea. I am glad Knowles is working on our side. He is very thorough and this is why I like him so much. I will draft an itinerary for our guests and post it soon. I will also pen a special letter to our closest allies about the arrangements. Let Knowles know I want him here at 9am to go over the details of the procession.”

Kendall: “Consider it done sir.”

As Wells slowly sipped his coffee he began to write out the long itinerary for the Funeral. Slowly it came together. A copy was filed on his desk awaiting Knowles as he quickly faxed responses to his closest allies.

I have made arrangements for all our October Alliance Members to set directly behind the Hawdawg Cabinet. I wish to show solidarity to the world in this time of sorrow. UnderSecretary Knowles has informed me that the International Airport is quite cluttered with Hawdawgians arriving for this event, so we have taken the liberty of securing both Business Airports for International dignitaries to utilize for arrival. I have shared this arrangement with your embassy staff. We have set aside Kelly Airbase North of town for our October Alliance associates. All inbound dignitary flights will have priority on Wednesday and Thursday of next week. I am surely forgetting something that must be covered but any items I have not specifically touched on can be answered by the UnderSecretary. If you need any special items or special arrangements please let me know.

Sincerely,

Defense Minister Gordon Wells
Holy Republic of Hawdawg

As Kendall faxed the messages to his foreign associates, UnderSecretary Knowles arrived for his meeting. Quickly Knowles was ushered into the study as Wells rose to greet him.

Wells: “Hello UnderSecretary, I hope everything is moving along nicely. I have the official schedule here for you to review.”

Knowles: “Thank you DM Wells. Yes this looks good. This will work. We have established a communications center and are arranging the necessary paperwork for all of our visiting guests. We have specially made lapel buttons that will be scanned for access to the Cathedral and the Official Seating area at the National Cemetery. I have distributed these to all the embassies in town for distribution to there respective parties that wish to attend the funeral. The Honor Guard Divisions of each armed service branch have assembled at Fort Skilig South of town. They have several days of preparations to establish the proper protocol and duties during the parade and subsequent armed services salute at the graveside. As of this morning no businesses will open on next Friday. We have asked the commuter rail lines to remain open in Stockholm to help handle the shear volumes of people, but the will fall silent during the funeral and internment. This morning the “Royal Guard” assembled in the Capital Building and I received a text message on my way here that they do have the Prime Minister in place for public viewing. The Guard awaits your approval for this process to begin. Since you have contacted the October Alliance Members I will follow up with the security details with each of there respective embassies. I also have a team in place at both Business Airports and Kelly Airbase to greet our foreign friends when they begin arriving. Travel routes and parking assignments have been laid out and the military is working with the local law enforcement offices to ensure the trip from the Cathedral to the National Cemetery goes smoothly. I can’t think of anything else at the moment that’s pressing sir.”

Wells: “You are thorough Knowles that is what I like about you. Contact the Colonel of the Guard and let him know that the viewing may begin at once. Please remind them to keep people moving along, many people will pass through the hallowed halls this week.”

Knowles: “If that is all sir, I must return to the office for more preparations. I will contact the Guard on my way back to the Capital.”

Wells: “Very well Knowles, call me if anything changes.”

Knowles: “Indeed sir. I will. God Bless you sir.”

Wells: “And may he bless you to Knowles.”

UnderSecretary Knowles hurried to his car waiting in the street. As he pulled away he contacted the Royal’s to officially commence the viewing.

Capital Building
10AM Local Time

Two dozen Royal Guardsmen stood in the rotunda surrounding the large polished cherry coffin centered on the pink marble floor. Across the casket lay a crisp Hawdawg Flag covering the late Prime Minister. Four Royal’s stood on the corners of the velvet roped area representing the four branches of military service. Each man was dressed in official Royal Guard Uniforms complete with a polished pickelhaube, full blue cavalry dress and shined knee-high boots. These corner guards each held a golden Halbert. There uniform’s was topped off with a short sword on there right hip. These men would have to endure a four hour shift of absolute stillness until the guard was changed, a small price to pay for the honor to perform such a duty. The remaining Royal’s took up stoic positions around the edges of the rotunda. As the Colonel of the guard gave the nod to open the doors of the Capital Building a quite line had already formed along the outer corridor. Many staffers and low-level government officials streamed through first to pay there respects to PM Wales. As news spread the viewing had begun, people began to flock to the Building to stand in line. Throughout the day the crowds grew larger as the wait to see the PM grew to six hours.

[Oslo]
The news of the death of PM Wales had reached Cotland, and many people were saddened by the news. By order of the King himself, all government buildings would fly their flags at half mast for the remainder of the week, as a last respect for the respected world leader that was now dead. At twelve noon the following day, a two-minute silence for remembering the Prime Minister in the neighboring country had been declared. In schools all across Cotland, in office buildings, construction sites, military garrisons, et cetera, most people got up from their seats and stood silent, remembering the man who had helped liberate the homestead of Cotland from the oppressing Kriegos. The most impressing show of respect came in front of the Palace though, with two full companies, HMKG Coy 4 (ceremonial duties company) and HMKG Coy 7 (rifle company) lining up in their dress uniforms, black L40A1 rifles on their shoulders and the banners of the two companies flying. At precisely twelve noon, a single order was barked out, and the soldiers all snapped to attention, presenting their rifles while bowing their heads. They held that position for two minutes straight, an impressive feat of their discipline.

http://img58.imageshack.us/img58/7021/hmkg7az6.jpg

Eventually, the two minutes passed and people returned to their jobs, children in the schools to learning, and the soldiers were dismissed. At 12:03, the doors to the Royal Palace were opened to allow people to come into the Palace to sign a so-called Protocol of Condolences, which was a book in which ordinary Cots signed their names under a statement of condolance, showing their respect and solidarity with the people of Hawdawg in this difficult time.

[Gardermoen AFB]
Inside Hangar 42 in the military section of Gardermoen international airport outside Oslo, the maintenance technicians were busy at work, preparing one of the two massive 54.1 meter long executive aircrafts for departure. They had several days before His Majesty and his entourage would board the impressive white-painted VC-16A Kongeløve royal transport, capable of bringing its maximum weight of 240,000 kilograms up to speeds of up to Mach 2.3, more than enough to get the King to where he needed to be very quickly. The trip to Stockholm wasn't longer than a few hundred kilometers, but still, they prepared the massive aircraft as if it was going to the other side of the world, tweeking the four CTJE-4A-2006 afterburning turbofan engines and stocking up with supplies. Inside the aircraft, air force personnel were busy vaccuming the carpets, making sure the leather seats were perfect, clearing what little there was of dust, et cetera.

The pilot, brigader Johansen and co-pilot oberst Sture were busy in the cockpit checking the systems while the four officers in the compartment behind the cockpit were busy running diagnostics on the systems. The Kongeløve had it all: 2048-bit encrypted communications, equally encrypted two-way datalink, an IR suppression system that reduced the heat signature from the four massive engines by nearly 750 percent, wireless broadband internet connection, weapons systems for self-defense in case the escort fighters were incapacitated or destroyed, and the new ACAJS. Advanced Cottish Airborne Jamming Suite. This system had the potential of jamming both radar-guided missiles, laser/LIDAR-guided missiles, ground radars and airborne AWACS, although it had never been tested in real combat. Hopefully, they wouldn't need to since the Kongeløve had a radar cross signature equal to that of the B-2A Spirit stealth bomber.

The Kongeløve had been created after it was decided that the former VC-737 Executive just didn't cut it anymore. After careful studies, it had been decided that the Cots needed an aircraft which could evacuate the King very quickly in case of for instance a nuclear attack. With non-supersonic aircraft, such evacuation plans were for morale only, but with a supersonic aircraft capable of operating as an airborne command central, surviving such an attack became a real possibility. After careful studies, it was decided to base the Kongeløve on the design of the Soviet Tu-160 Blackjack, but considerably improved and modified. The aircraft didn't have any weapons stores, save for two internal sidebays for two AIM.14/A BVRAAMs each, but instead had sufficient room for up to twenty-four VIP passengers in comfortable seating. The King had a personal area, complete with bed, office, bathroom and conference room, while the rest of the passengers were restricted to seats that would make even first class on the best airlines in the world look like a third-world country economy class. However, only two had been constructed, with the tailfin designations ZR-001 and ZR-002, with -001 being the primary aircraft and the -002 being the reserve aircraft. The price was whooping though. At $550 million a piece new and with an annual maintenance cost of $90 million, there wasn't any plans of buying new ones any time soon. However, ZR-001 would fly to Stockholm in a few days, and then it had to be up to specs and beyond. After all, it was going to be the first real show-off for the Kongeløve.

For days the public had streamed through the rotunda to view their fallen leader lying in state. After a week of official viewing the number of citizens and guests of Hawdawg that had walked through the hallowed halls of the Capital building had numbered some 1 million people. Finally the day had come for foreign guests to arrive. UnderSecretary Knowles hurried about his downtown office in the Capital Annex assigning various tasks for his greeter teams of Protocol specialists. Inside Knowles department a little known group of individuals worked on making sure all customs and traditions expected of visiting dignitaries were met upon arrival and their stay in Hawdawg. This department would be stretched to the limit this week with the arrival of so many foreign guests. Ever concerned about planning and preparation Knowles had worked on the arrival schedule for most of the night. As he called his Arrival Team into his office he drank from his second pot of coffee of the morning.

Knowles: “Okay here we are officially a day out from the Funeral. We have divided up the greeter group into four teams. Each will be responsible for making sure our honored guests are given a proper greeting and welcome into our Country. Please make sure that an official program for tomorrow’s ceremony is given to our guests upon arrival today. We want to make sure they are all aware of the times they will need to be in place. If I don’t have any questions, we need to head out to the airport and the AirBase because our guests will soon be here.”

As the room sat silent, Knowles quickly dismissed his staff to handle the enormous influx of people that were to descend upon Hawdawg beginning within the hour. As he sat in his office working out the last minute details of the motorcade assignments HNN news was carrying a news feed from the Stockholm International Airport. Gridlock had descended upon the city. Hotel rooms were a scarce commodity in town and for as far as the eye could see traffic snarled the routes through town as citizens throughout Sweden drove into the Capital to witness an event that would surely mark the history of Hawdawg.

At eleven o'clock that morning, the VH-23C Merlin lifted off from the helipad within the perimeter of Akershus fortress in downtown Oslo, carrying the King and the Prime Minister, as well as the eight men which made up the Kings personal guards, the Livgarde detachment of the 1st BOF - the Birkebeiners. These black operations people were dressed in non-descript dark suits and looked like assistants, aides or something that wasn't a threat, but they were highly trained in close-quarters combat and had high-power weaponry underneath the jackets. These eight would go with the King in the ZR-001 while the remaining sixteen members of the Livgarde detachment had already flown to Stockholm in the chartered 737 along with the aides, less-important officials and what-not earlier that morning.

Twenty minutes later, the VH-23C touched down gently at the tarmac fourty meters from the waiting ZR-001, fifty airmen dressed in Class A uniforms, presenting their L42A1 rifles for the King and Prime Minister as he passed, dressed in a perfectly fitting black wool suit with a white silk shirt and a black silk tie, perfectly shined leather shoes and a neatly maintained beard. The King saluted as he passed the airmen, inspecting them, although not as closely as the base commander had twenty minutes prior to ensure that there was nothing negative for the King to remark. The King passed the soldiers and stopped at the foot of the flightstairs where two sergeants saluted perfectly to share a few words with the base commander before ascending the set of stairs.

Safely inside, the King was escorted to his seat by the chief steward, a kaptein while the Prime Minister and the other passengers on this flight, the Prime Minister, Defense Minister, Foreign Minister, the King's adjutants and personal aides as well as the eight bodyguards. In all, seventeen passengers on the flight to Stockholm. The Kongeløve could seat twenty-four, comfortably. Ten minutes after the King had boarded, everything was set and the aircraft, designation Realm 1, started taxiing to Runway 2 Left, cleared for immediate take-off. Within five minutes, Realm 1 was airborne and headed for Stockholm, moving at subsonic speeds. Two minutes after take-off, the massive aircraft was joined by the escort of four F-25A Typhoon advanced air superiority fighters which were tasked with the protection of the aircraft. While there was absolutely no threat to Realm 1, the fighters would still escort the aircraft carrying the King, providing both protection with the four BVRAAMs and two IRIS-Ts each fighter carried in the internal bays, and an honor guard for the King.

The flight was uneventful, and an hour later, Realm 1 landed at the designated area for it to land, the fighters also landing along with it. After the flight stairs had been rolled over to the aircraft, the two sergeants from earlier descended the stairs quickly and took up positions at the foot of the stairs to salute their head of state, who appeared a few minutes later when the bodyguards got the all-clear from the security teams on the ground. The King descended the stairs and met both the Hawdawgian delegation and the Cottish ambassador to Hawdawg. As he shook the hand of the lead Hawdawgian, he spoke in a dignified manner.

"On behalf of my country, I offer my deepest condolences for your loss. Prime Minister Wales was a great man, and he will be sorely missed."

"Thank you Great King. We are truly honored by your presence here in the time of sorrow. I was asked by Defense Minister Wells to share with you this official program for the ceremonies tomorrow. I was also tasked with reminding his excellency that the special lapel pins must be worn for access into the Cathedral tomorrow. Is there any item or special need his majesty requires during his stay in Hawdawg?" the tall Diplomatic representative asked.

In the background a small motorcade arrived clearly this was the armed escort that would accompany the King and his party to there destination of choice.

"No, I have no special requirements. However, I would like to inquire as to the possibility of speaking with Minister Wells before the ceremony, preferably sometime later today."

The giant AN-225 had already taxied and lifted off by the time the Fuhrer arrived at the airport. It was carrying his armoured HM 'Continental' Limousine and two armoured black INDIAN Chief XL's. A squad of ten men who did not exist sat on the passenger deck, motionless, wearing strange black neoprene suits with wires running all over them. On each sat beside these men sat packed up cases, with CENTURION Battle Armor in them, and AICW rifles on top. These men travelled everywhere with the Fuhrer as a QRT (Quick Response Team) and Guard Team. They would simply guard the AN-225 and the Fuhrer's plane, a black, red and yellow colored E-4B.

The AN-225 was accompanied by two F-15L Super Strike Eagles, and the E-4B would also be accompanied by two F-15L's.

The Fuhrer and his two aides, as well as eight Fuhrer Guards, were the first two onto the E-4B after the crew. He sat in the normal cabin for take off, and was soon joined by the Secretary of Defense and the Foreign Affairs Advisor, along with their aides.

The flight to Stockholm would take several hours, and once in the air the Fuhrer retired to his office to continue the days work, after all, just because he was on a plane didn't mean the leader of the world's largest country took a day off!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stockholm International Airport

The AN-225 had already landed and had been stored in a large hangar in the airport, the crew already having unloaded the Limo and the two SUV's. Five CENTURION clad men now stood at intervals around the giant plane, as the cars teared away to where the E-4B was to taxi.

About an hour later the giant and colorful looking E-4B landed and taxied to its assigned bay, the Hirgizstanian Ambassador and the Hawdawgian delegation waiting near a set of steps. A small press crew from HNN, HNC and RWB (Reporters Without Borders) had their camera's trained on the plane the whole time, the pundits talking at the sides of the cameras.

The limo and two SUV's waited nearby. After the stairs had been locked in two Fuhrer Guards exited the airplane and took up position at the bottom of the steps, the other six coming down with the Fuhrer. The Ambassador and the Hawdawgian delegation stepped forward as he reached the bottom of the step. The Fuhrer nodded at the Ambassador, indication they would talk later, and then turned to the Hawdawgians. "The whole of the Commonwealth is saddened by the loss of the Prime Minister. Please accept our sincerest condolences."

The Assistant to the Diplomat instantly produced a palm pilot and through a wireless connection established contact with Defense Minister Wells personal secretary. After a few seconds a response quickly was rendered.

"Honorable King I have made contact with Minister Wells personal secretary and he says the Minister can see you at 5pm. He would most certainly welcome you into his home. He also wanted me to share with you that dinner will be served at 5:30pm. A meal of pototaoes, breaded steak, and peas along with fresh bread will grace the table. Security was tight around the Hangar assigned to Hirgizstan. A small detachment of descreetly armed SUV's awaited to escort the Fuhrer to his destination of choice. A squad of heavily armed men stood on station inside the vehicles should a security situation develop in transit.

Jonathan Witt stepped forward to greet the Fuhrer. "Sir we are honored by your presence. That you kindly for the words of encouragement. I was asked by Defense Minister Wells to share this intenerary with you. His excellency wanted us to remind your party of the requirements to wear the special electronic lapel pins that will grant entry into the Cathedral tomorrow. "Thank you, that is all that I had hoped for. I shall be sure to mention you favorably to the Minister when I see him."

With that, he nodded to his entourage and headed for the motorcade and got into the black limousine with the Cottish flags on the engine hood. It would take him to the hotell where he would be staying during his stay in Stockholm. The plan of the day was to get to the hotell, stay until a bit before two, when he would visit the Cottish embassy and stay there until his meeting with Defense Minister Wales at five o'clock. The plan was relayed to Livgarden, who immediately sent out a few men undercover to see if there were any potential threats to the Cottish monarch along the route. There were none.

"I have a small security team that guards my planes, and I would be most pleased if, when they are guarding my own plane, that they are not filmed or photographed by the media as their uniforms and equipment are...sensitive."

The Hawdawg Delegation listened intently to the requests made by the Fuhrer. After a pause the Greeting Team Leader responded.

"Fuhrer we can put your mind at ease. This section of the Airport has been set aside for our guests, only international diplomatic arrivals are allowed into this Hub. Our security detail monitors this section of the Airport via closed circuit television, but rest assured it is not broadcast or taped. We only use CCTV for monitoring purposes. In addition, all journalists have been barred from this area to secure privacy for our guests. The only people your security team will see will be our military ground crews brought over from Kelley AFB to handle the diplomatic jet traffic, and our security team that will be working the perimeter of this section of the Airport. In fact Fuhrer if you don't want your picture in the press we can arrange this also. Strict guidelines have been handed out to the main press agencies about the protocol's expected during this event and they will abide by them completely or suffer the wrath of soon to be Prime Minister Wells."

Residence of Defense Minister Wells
4:50pm local time

Defense Minister Wells sat patiently in his office awaiting the arrival of the Cottish King. He had been summoned earlier in the day by the greeting team at the Airfield the King wished an audience with him. It had been a long time since Wells had talked with the king. His mind drifted back to the "Fleet Week" in Layarteb City when they had briefly crossed paths at the show. My how the time had passed since that day. While he finished a fine hand-rolled cigar delivered this morning from Cuba, he was informed by his personal secretary that the Cottish King was in route to his home. As the gates swung open the Cottish motorcade slowly pulled into the circle drive in front of the simple white town home. Defense Minister Wells didn't like to put on heirs, his house was simple in design yet functional for a man on the move like himself. While decorations didn't adorn the outside of the home, certain artifacts decorated the inside from the corners of the Hawdawg Kingdom. Several paintings of the countryside were the focal point in each room, each depicting a breathtaking natural marvel somewhere in Hawdawg. As he saw the cars pull into the drive he rose and exited his office towards the front door of his home. As he made it onto his porch the doors of Cottish King's escort vehicles opened as a small security team exited to establish a perimeter around the home. Defense Minister Wells walked down to the Cottish King's sedan and waited as the door opened he stepped forward to offer his hand to the King.

"Welcome King, it is so nice to have you in Hawdawg, although it is for a somber occasion. I hope my humble home will be befitting of his majesty. Come in, I have a place we may set and discuss our matters of business in private."

"Thank you Minister Wells," The King said as he shook the hand of the Hawdawgian Defense Minister and followed him inside. As they made their way to the sitting-room, the King observed the many beautiful paintings in the otherwise spartan house. Before long, they made it to the sitting-room and the King accepted the chair offered. As he sat down, he spoke, his words well considered.

"Please allow me to express my condolences on the loss of Prime Minister Wales. His passing came as a shock for me. It is also his passing and its effects I wish to discuss with you." The King paused for a brief period of time before continuing.

"It is of my understanding that Prime Minister Wales was the unifying link between the various fractions within the Hawdawgian Parliament. How will his passing effect the political landscape in Hawdawg? Allow me to be so bold as to promise you sir that if there are any illegal uprisings or rebellions similar to those we have experienced recently in Cotland, the Realm will naturally be willing to offer its assistance to the lawful government in whatever form said government requires." If there was one thing Cotland didn't want to see, then it was a socialist or worse, communist government in Hawdawg, and they would go to great lengths to stop any such risings from occuring. Not that it was much risk of it, but still. The Realm would take no chances, and its leadership wanted the Hawdawgian leadership of today to know that they supported it completely.

"Thank you King your kind words are reassuring. As far the political ramifications of the Prime Minister's death, it is still too early to tell. I have been nominated and will most likely accept the Prime Minister position. My support in both houses is unwavering for this position. As you know all of Hawdawg Cabinet positions are set up as a lifetime appointment or until a Minister voluntarily leaves his or her post. An aide entered with a big, thick, black book and handed it to the King, excersing utmost respect for the head of state. The King gave the aide a warm nod as he accepted the book and presented it to Wells.

The Emperor had been on the plane for 3,400 of the 3,922 mile journey from Layarteb City to Stockholm. His VC-26F Condor, under escort from a flight of four F-39A Super Eagles and four F-22B Raptors had refueled over Ireland. They had taken off with a reduced fuel load and weight to allow them a shorter take off run and less resistance across the Atlantic Ocean, as they few high, at 39,000 feet and 525 mph. The eight escort fighters were all top-of-the-line products, the F-39s lisence built from the Armed Republic of Soviet Bloc and the F-22B, a very advanced and improved F-22A. They began to request clearance to land at Stockholm IAP, where the runway was long enough to support the mighty VC-26F, requiring at least 11,200 ft. to land the beast of an aircraft and then another 13,280 ft. to get it back off the ground. With the reduced fuel load and weight it could land in a shorter distance.

When he sat down in the comfortable arm chair, he looked around quickly, taking in all of the room. That was part of his old training as a Special Forces soldier, always to know your surroundings. "I am curious now with the void of the Prime Minister's death. Who would be acceding to his 'throne,' so to speak. There has been a lot of speculation but I'm not one for speculation. The Empire is concerned though that, should a politician of a dangerously different nature come to power that withdrawal from the October Alliance might be entertained as a possible thought. We're concerned about that, significantly, as we view the Holy Republic of Hawdawg as a brother in the world. We feel that the October Alliance is the strongest and most powerful force in the world and that it's balance is what keeps the world running and in check. We cannot have a factionalized world, as much as it is now. That would put all of our lands in serious danger."

Rest easy emperor. I have many friends in the Parliament and I have been told by both majority leaders that I am going to be elected to the role of Prime Minister within the month. I have no plans on withdrawing from The October Alliance nor do I have plans on waivering in support of the nations within the alliance. Our nations have long been friends even before our alliance membership and we shall remain steadfast in that aspect. As I told the King earlier today the only political hiccup I see is my potential replacement in the DoD. He has a firey temper, and could potentially cause me some headaches. Day of the Funeral
Stockholm, Sweden

Inside the Cathedral fabulous stain-glass windows decorated the outer casements of the open hall. A large hand-carved podium dominated the center of the Cathedral mad eof rich mahogany. Vaulted walls, some sixty feet high stretched to the ceilings as the ornate carved support columns stood to support this bastion of Faith for centuries. Throughout the building flowers draped all approaches as some fifty florists worked for the entire night before the ceremony to bedazzle the building with fresh cut flowers from the far corners of Hawdawg. Along the streets approaching the Cathedral crowds had already gathered several hours before the ceremony to catch a glimpse of something they would sure remember for the rest of there lives. A lone bell in the main square of town tolled once every minute symbolizing the sorrow the nation was coming to grips with this morning.

Slowly the delegates from locations all around the world began to arrive at the house of worship, ready to honor the man that had done so much for so many. Security, while tight for the huge number of dignitaries in attendance, was transparent. The idea was to blend in and not detract from the event. One by one the cars were unloaded of there precious cargo and people filed in to take up there respective seats. The Parliament, the Supreme Court, and other important government officials were seated on the right side of the church. On the left the Hawdawg Cabinet was seated directly by the Wales family, along with the selected October Alliance members in attendance. Behind these guests were the international dignitaries and various ambassadors that came to officially represent there home country.

PM Wales had made an incredibly slow journey by caisson, complete with a full escort of two divisions of soldiers to the Cathedral. Both units stood at attention outside as the main doors of the Cathedral opened, they would remain at attention throughout the service. An honor guard representing each branch of military service in Hawdawg began the slow walk, transporting the state coffin that held Prime Minister Wales to its resting place on a base slightly below the podium. As the soldiers slowly placed Prime Minister Wales Coffin in its place, the six men took up a position on either side of the flag-draped coffin. Each man looked as if they had been chiseled from stone, there uniforms crisp and fully decorated.

At 9am The Honorable David Combs Chief Supreme Court Justice stood up in his eloquent and stately satin robe and moved to the podium to address the audience in attendance.

We lost Josey Wales only days ago, he belongs to the ages now, but we preferred it when he belonged to us. In a life of good fortune, he valued above all the gracious gift of his wife Eleanor. During his career, Josey Wales passed through a thousand crowded places; but there was only one person, he said, who could make him lonely by just leaving the room. Hawdawg honors you, Eleanor, for the loyalty and love you gave this man on a wonderful journey, and to that journey's end. Today, our whole nation grieves with you and your family.

The Wales family would see its share of hardship, struggle and uncertainty. And out of that circumstance came a man of steadiness, calm, and a cheerful confidence that life would bring good things. The qualities all of us have seen in Josey Wales were first spotted 70 and 80 years ago. As a safety patrol volunteer at Kickapoo MS in Deer Park, he was the protector keeping an eye out for trouble. As a young Captain in the Navy, he was a fearless leader upon the seas. As a statesman, he was the brash, steadfast man good about taking on the task and seeing it through to the end.

Along the way, certain convictions were formed and fixed in the man. Josey Wales believed that everything happened for a reason, and that we should strive to know and do the will of God. He believed that the gentleman always does the kindest thing. He believed that people were basically good, and had the right to be free. He believed that bigotry and prejudice were the worst things a person could be guilty of. He believed in the Golden Rule and in the power of prayer. He believed that Hawdawg was not just a place in the world, but the hope of the world. Hold your heads high fellow Hawdawgians the stars in the sky shine a little brighter tonight, now they have a new gem among them in Josey Wales.

As Justice Combs finished his speech, Defense Minister Wells rose and approached the podium. As he gazed upon the room he could see many friends and associates that had gathered to honor his friend and confidant, Josey Wales.

Today I come to you as a fellow man, fellow Hawdawgian, and most importantly leader of The Republic. Throughout the days leading to this ceremony I often wondered what I would say as I addressed the nation and the world. As I sat in my study last night and reflected on this topic I asked myself what would Josey say? The answer came as clear and as crisp as a brisk fall morning. Today we honor the legacy of a gentleman who made his mark on the world in a gentle fashion. When asked, Wales never wavered in his support of his allies. Throughout his history in office he faced many struggles and trying situations and he never lost perspective of the overall goal of bettering the people of Hawdawg. Many days I would set in awe at his skillful talent at manipulating legislation through the Parliament. Whether he was dealing with a rogue nation or a posturing Senator, Wales had the skill and demeanor to handle all situations. I will miss the broad smile and the vision he cared for this great nation. On a personal level I have lost a great friend, a man that would do whatever is necessary to assist you in your trials or tribulations with total disregard for his workload. Wales always found time to help you solve your personal situations. I remember the day well when we were dealing with the New Caledonian Incident, I had just lost my Uncle. As I sat and listened to the plans being laid out by the Naval Department, Wale stopped the Admiral mid-sentence and asked him to step out for a moment. Wales could since tension in people and asked me what was troubling me. After I shared my situation with him, he called the Admiral back into the Situation Room and told him that he should lay ORBAT and fax it to his office. Wales promptly escorted me out of the DoD and took me to my families home in the outskirts of Stockholm and sat with my family for several hours. As he left my families home, he told me not to worry he would deal with the NC incident personally and I was to take care of family first. The next morning an entire van full of flowers arrived special delivery from the Prime Minister himself. That extra level of caring he exhibited with all his staff was amazing. As a statesman I have witnessed many situations that could have potentially been harmful to Hawdawg that Wales easily diffused with the power of the pen.

As the sun sets on the legacy of this true Hawdawg Icon, the sun also will rise on a new dawn, a dawn in which Hawdawg will serve as a beacon of light within the ever changing world. We will hold fast to our ideals and traditions which has made this country so great. We will remain unwavering in our support of our friends and colleagues around the world. We will remain forever true to the legacy of Prime Minister Josey Wales.

Defense Minister Wells stood at attention as the lone bag-piper began to play an almost haunting tune. The echoes of the music reverberated through the hall. The honor guard slowly began to form up around the statesman’s coffin as they carefully lifted the casket and proceeded to carry it to the awaiting caisson outside. As they carefully moved in unison out the main doors of the Cathedral, two full divisions dressed in parade uniform presented arms to a fallen leader. Slowly the Church began to clear as dignitaries and international guests were escorted to there vehicles to begin the slow journey to the church. It seemed a nation stopped, all were glued to a television or stood along the route to the National Cemetery, hoping to get a glance of the former Prime Minister. Throughout the country people joined in the moment of silence for a fallen hero, as trains, trams and even taxis honored this request. As the Caisson made its way through town, a rider-less horse was lead along behind, the somber reminder of the gravity of the loss.

As the select group gathered around the graveside for the final good-bye to Wales, the honor guard carefully removed the coffin from the Caisson and placed it on a stand close to the Tomb of the Unknown. As they placed the Colonel in charge of the Honor Guard came forward, and signaled for the military salute to begin. In the distance field howitzer’s were readied by the artillery regiment of the select divisions and one by one they fired a dummy charge honoring Prime Minister Wales. Twenty-one and then a final barrage by all simultaneously echoed a thunderous noise across the hallowed ground. On que, a flight of fighters flew over and performed the famous missing hero’s salute. Then a group of Air Cavalry helicopter’s buzzed the cemetery in formation. As a last honor for an interned leader, the national military band produced three bugle officers that played TAPS in unison to the awaiting crowd. Slowly the honor guard at the tomb began to fold the official colors and the Colonel in charge presented the flag to the fallen leaders wife, Eleanor.

Prime Minister Wales coffin was then lowered into a carefully crafted marble resting place. As this was happening Defense Minster Wells stepped forward to make a few remarks and perform one more task to finish the ceremony.

Today we grieve in the loss of a true leader. But do not fear, for today we share the vision, heart, and enduring legacy of a man known as Josey Wales with the world. The beacon of truth and justice will forever stay true to him by the lighting of this eternal flame. It shall burn forever in the hearts and minds of Hawdawgians. May god bless Josey Wales, and may god bless Hawdawg.

DM Wells stepped from the podium and bent down to light the burner on the marble face of the tomb. The flame immediately came to life and flickered in the wind. Shimmering in the daylight, this flame would truly mark the location where an iconic leader had come to rest.

The ceremony for the late Prime Minister was iconic and definitely worthy of his stature. He was a national hero in the Holy Republic and that was something that wasn't lost on the Emperor who lost far more than just a political ally. He lost a friend that day and he maintained his composure at the funeral. It wasn't easy to see friends die and that was something he never quite grasped being in the Special Forces all that time. He could handle it to the point where he did what he had to do, held his composure, and lasted through it. However, inside, it hurt him to feel the pain of loss to death. He wasn't exactly an angel when it came to that, after all, he had ordered the deaths of thousands during his tenure as the Emperor so far but those were criminals, vagabonds, and myscreants. This was different. It always was. He hoped that the Defense Minister would take the place of the Prime Minister and that his successor would have enough sense to keep himself controlled. He wasn't too worried, yet, about the revelations that Defense Minister Wells gave him about his successor.

The King observed the ceremony with a strong feeling of grief and sorrow over the loss of his friend. It was a beautiful ceremony, a worthy farewell to the iconic leader that now was among the angels in Heaven. That was what the Cottish faith said would happen to those who lived good, faithful lives like Wales had. At the grave, the King waited until the ceremony ended and the people started to walk away before conducting a little ritual native to Cotland. He walked up to the marble monument and placed his hand on it, closing his eyes. Silently, yet with a voice filled with dedication and respect, he recited a text from the ancient times, a remnant from Cotland's viking heritage with the names of the native gods replaced with that of the Almighty God. While the text wasn't very long, it wasn't able to be translated with its propper meaning intact, so I won't try. Basically it said to take care of the soul of Josey Wales as a reward for the many years of being a faithful servant to God and his country. After the prayer, he finished with Our Father's Prayer. After that, he tooked at the monument one last time before turning to walk away.

The Fuhrer sat side by side with the October Alliance leaders during the ceremony. His face was stone and he betrayed no emotion. He was from an older time, when men simply didn't show their emotions. But inside he was thinking about what Josey Wales had meant to the world, and what he had done.

The graveside ceremony was the hardest part, seeing the coffin lowered below the ground had a certain finality to it that was hard to deal with. In the coffin was a man larger than life, and now he was gone, and being lowered into the ground was the final act in a life so full of vibrancy.

The Fuhrer had left the graveside with the Emperor and the other dignataries, but he'd be back. He waited at the hotel until dark and then took his limo back out to the cemetery. Instead of a suit he wore a military uniform. The Fuhrer Guards also wore their ceremonial dress. The four Guards and the Fuhrer assembled around the freshly filled grave, breathing in the chilled night air and listening hard to the distant sounds of the city going to sleep.

One of the Fuhrer Guards barked "ATTEN-SHUN", and all five men, the Fuhrer included, snapped rigidly to attention. Then came another barked order, shattering the silence for a split second, "PRE-SENT ARMS" The five men snapped a salute and held it for around a minute in the silence before lowering their arms. The Fuhrer then stepped forward and removed a small box from his pocket. There was a small diamond inside it, with a little gold stand. He placed the diamond on the stand and then placed the whole thing at the head of the grave. It was a small Hirgizstanian tradition, on every military grave inside the engraving of the sun and the machete on the white headstones lay a small diamond that represented glorious strength. Now this diamond would sit at the head of the grave of Josey Wales, hopefully for all time, to remind people of his glorious strength.

The funeral was somber and just as the Fuhrer of the Commonwealth of Hirgizstan was from a time when men didn't show their emotions so too was the Emperor. They sat side-by-side during the funeral, taking note of everything that was going on and honoring the loss of the Prime Minister. The Emperor paid his final respects at the grave and returned to his hotel room with his guards and entourage. It was peaceful in Stockholm that night and they enjoyed it by sitting on the balcony, conducting business in the Empire while they were away from home. The Empire wouldn't run itself and though he ahd left the Minister of Foreign Affairs in charge during his absence, he still had to be notified of everything major that was going on, especially if it was crucial to the safety and security of the Empire.

It was late in the evening following a day that seemed to last forever in the mind of Defense Minister Wells. As he sat quietly in his office reflecting on the day's events and scouring over the news pouring in from the attack on the Cottish Embassy in Japan, he recieved a message from his personal secretary.

"Sir the Fuhrer wishes a brief audience with you tonight before he leaves in the morning."

"Very well, send word I will see him. I don't plan on sleeping much this evening anyway. Let his people know my door is open tonight."

A message was sent via the Hirgizstan embassy staff Wells would be able to see the Fuhrer, Defense Minister Wells patiently awaited his arrival.

The Fuhrer had only got back to his hotel room when an Embassy runner arrived to inform him the meeting with Wells was set up. He didn't have time to change out of his military uniform so he, and his Guards still dressed in their finery, went down to the basement and loaded up in the SUV's and Limo.
The night in Stockholm was chilly, the fall was fast approaching and summer was definetly over. A police escort joined the three vehicles at the front of the hotel and they roared off into the city.

Several minutes later they arrived at the Defense Ministry and went into the underground carpark. The Fuhrer took two Guards with him, the rest stayed with the vehicles and chatted with the policemen.

The Fuhrer and his two Guards took the main lift up to Wells' floor. The building was pretty much empty at that particular time of night, just a few solitary night owls and Wells' secretary. The Fuhrer was led into the Minister's office.

Wells was in front of his desk and he came forward, looking at the uniforms of the Fuhrer and his guards. The Fuhrer shook his hand and said, "It is a pleasure to finally meet you in person, Defense Minister, or should I say Prime Minister?"

"Thank you Fuhrer. I suppose Prime Minister will suffice as I have already been given the title from the vote of confidence I recieved from both Houses in Parliament. Judging by my meetings with the other members of the October Alliance I assume this is about our maintaining our membership? I can assure the Fuhrer I plan to carry on the legacy of PM Wales and plan to maintain Hawdawg's place in the alliance. We have stood side by side with our fellow members in times of peril and in times of bounty and as the eternal light burns at the former Prime Minister's grave so shall we stand with our brethern for as long as that light burns.

I wanted to personally thank all the members that attended this funeral, it was a fitting tribute to such a man in Wales."

Prime Minister Wells reached into his special box of Cuban Cigars and offered one to the Fuhrer.

"Would you like a Cigar Fuhrer? These are hand-rolled fresh from Layarteb Cuba. They make the finest Cigars I have ever had the pleasure of smoking."

The Fuhrer smiled and took the cigar, moving close to take a light from the ornate lighter the PM presented. The Fuhrer took a couple of puffs and exhaled, turning the cigar sideways and nodding in approval.

"Indeed, I realised that the continuance of relations with the Alliance would be a mere formality with yourself as Prime Minister, but as you know, affairs of state are best not left to chance and I thought it best to simply hear it from you. Is there any other business you'd like to discuss, seeing as we're here?"

Wells drew a long drag on his Cuban.

Well Fuhrer my replacement in the DoD may become a problem. I have been told Simon Olan Smithe has been named as a front-runner for the position. His fiery temper and very short fuse has caused many problems in the Senate, but he does have an apparent faction supporting his movement into the DoD. I am working on my connections to keep this reality from happening, but if he does make the transition I am going to have to use every power in the Office of the Prime Minister to keep him in check. We shall see how this plays out.

I did have another question I wanted to ask, what do your sources tell you about this situation in Japan? I am recieving disturbing information from our embassy about the terroristic activities taking place. I have been informed that the Cottish Embassy has been attacked and our staff has been on lockdown due to this. I have offered assistance to the Cot's but I we haven't heard anything back form them on this yet. I am concerned this event may expand regionally into areas of influence we currently control. This is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Terrorists only understand one thing and if we have to take drastic action to eliminate this threat we will do so.

The information I am about to share with you is top secret in nature and is only shared on a need to know basis. Hawdawg maintains an elite counter-terrorism division. We don't list them on any official tally sheet for prying eyes to see. In fact, we mingle the men among other units to disguise there units existence. I am authorized by secret Parliamental decree 153-H to eliminate any terroristic threat to the Republic abroad. In a nutshell Fuhrer, I have no qualms about sending men into any country harboring terrorists to eliminate the threat. Our operatives know if they are caught, their existence will be officially denied. We don't appease terrorists we execute them, whether in our country or abroad. I plan to move at least a Batallion of these men to our naval facilities in Papua New Guinea to begin training for an assault on Japan if needed. We will move with little notice or warning, but rest assured our October Alliance brethern will be kept informed if we feel the need to strike.

The Fuhrer took a draw on his own cuban, savouring the taste and letting the smoke curl out of his mouth and up into the air.

"Japan is starting to worry me also. In fact I received word from the National Intelligence Agency Chief of Mission there while I was driving over here. It alarmed me to read that he, a veteran in Japan, has never heard of the group supposedly behind the attacks. As you know the Commonwealth has great interests in Japan, both in trade and in a military agreement. The Embassy is currently asking whether we can send some forces to protect the Embassy and help the Cots, it would not be a stretch, if we are allowed, to send some of those forces to your own Embassy there.

My own assumptions at the moment are that the Japanese are definetly not behind the attacks, nor are they wilfully harboring these terrorists. Of course that only complicates things further as the Japanese Government will likely want revenge for attacks on their populace. Naturally, if it came to light that the Japanese were harboring the terrorists, then we would be right behind you. But right now I think we need to work with the Japanese to eliminate the threat. If you wish I could always arrange for your military forces to base themselves inside Hirgizstanian bases in Japan if you wish to pursue these terrorists. If we are seen to be helping the Japanese track them down I don't see a problem in this.

And your succesor at the DoD, he wouldn't be an obstacle to military relations with the Alliance, would he?"

We can deploy a Tactical Terrorist Unit to one of your bases in Japan. I can have a unit ready for transfer to one of your ships offshore within three days. I would rather we ferry them onto your vessels Fuhrer and then your transports take them the rest of the way in. We don't want to draw any unwanted attention to this group when they arrive and Hawdawg Helicopters arriving at your bases certainly would raise an eyebrow. The unit commander will be James Eagle Eye Fisner, don't let the name fool you. This man is an Alabama-Coushata Indian we located in East Texas. He has been on various missions for us throughout the world. I can't go into detail about most of his activities but I can say he has worked in North Africa, India, and the Pacific Rim handling various "tasks" for The Republic. They don't come any better than him, or his hand-picked team. Once he gets established, we will let him dictate the strategy and tactics he feels are best for the situation at hand. He is one of the best we have to offer Fuhrer and I don't think his work will disappoint.

As far as Smithe in the DoD and its effect on TOA relations don't worry Fuhrer. I have already penned a directive all dealings with the TOA and its members will be handled through my office. He will only be involved in planning and various other tasks not specifically dealing with policy.

"Excellent. Some of the 20th Fleet is on manouvres in the Pacific, they'd be more than welcome to accept your team."

The two men finished their cuban cigars and talked for a bit longer before they shook hands again and the Fuhrer left the building, he would be flying on to Hirgizstanian Northern Russia the next day.

Official Broadcast from the Office of Prime Minister

Live Feed.

Good morning fellow Hawdawgians. We have all been saddened by the loss of Prime Minister Wales, it is my duty to inform you that I, Gordon Wells, have been chosen by both Houses to become the new acting Prime Minister effective immediately. I have assumed all duties and assignments of the office, as well as sent a communique to the world stating the change. Rest assured fellow citizens I wish to continue the legacy of the man we had all come to love so much. I will do my best to reflect the teachings and ideals PM Wales held so true in his tenure in office.

I have also been informed Simon Olan Smithe has been chosen to lead the DoD in my absence. I look forward to working with him on the defense and protection of this great nation we hold dear and in the protecting of our interests abroad.

Many of you may have seen the horrific events that have been unfolding in Japan and may wonder if our citizens are in danger. Our allies, the Cot's have been ruthlessly attacked with no provocation, by a terrorist cell. Currently our facilities and citizens in Japan are safe, but we ask you pray for them in this time of need. We also ask you say a prayer for our neighbors, it appears the Cottish have had some losses. We will do whatever is necessary to help defend our allies in there time of need, they would do so for our sakes.

Thank you and good night from the office of the Prime Minister, Gordon Wells.

End of Feed.
