It was 8 P.M. in Copenhagen, Denmark. A big ceremony was about to begin in the Gardens of the Fredensborg Palace.
After almost two centuries of separation, Scandinavia, at least a part of it, would be united once again. For a long time a strong scandinavist movement has been present in Denmark and Norway, and with the mysterious subsequent deaths of the rulers in Denmark and Norway, some people saw an opportunity to the union of the Scandinavian kingdoms. Independent referendum were held at both kingdoms, with a great majority of the population voting for the unification of both countries, and the heirs of the Danish and Norwegian throne didn’t had a real choice but to support the unification.
The young twenty three-year old Karoline Olsen, from the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg branch of the Oldenburg House was chosen to be the queen of the newly formed United Kingdom of West Scandinavia. She was sitting on a big, comfortable carriage, as it headed towards the Fredensborg Palace. She was wearing her coronation robe. As they approached the Palace, she could see the enormous crowd gathering outside. She was very nervous, she has never imagined that she would one day become a real Queen. The carriage stopped in front of the Palace’s main door and a lieutenant from the newly formed West Scandinavian Royal Guard opened the door and helped the future Queen get out of the carriage.
The heirs of the Danish and Norwegian throne were already waiting on the palace gardens, waiting for the future monarch of West Scandinavia. It was supposed to be a closed ceremony, so only the nobility and the clergy were allowed, the ceremony would be broadcasted to both Denmark and Norway, however, and public screens have been set up in many important places in both Denmark and Norway.
A band played the newly-composed national anthem of West Scandinavia as Karoline walked into the Garden. After she sat on a heavily adorned chair, the Danish heir approached her and said: “Sirs, I here present unto you Karoline Olsen Oldenburg, your undoubted Queen. Wherefore all you who are come this day to do your homage and service, are you willing to do the same?”
After the people acclaimed the Sovereign at each side, the Norwegian heir said:”Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the peoples of the United Kingdom of West Scandinavia and of your Possessions and other Territories to any of them belonging or pertaining, according to their respective laws and customs?"
Karoline answered promptly: “I solemnly promise so to do.”
The Danish heir then approached. “Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgments?” He asked.
“I Will. The things which I have here promised, I will perform, and keep. So help me God.” Karoline answered nervously.
The Danish heir then presented the Queen with the Danish royal sceptre. The Norwegian heir then approached, and presented her with the Norwegian royal sceptre. Lastly, a young 10-year old girl, representing the newborn nation, placed the West Scandinavian Crown on her head, followed by a collective cry of “God Save the Queen!” along with a salvo of cannon fire.
She was escorted to the royal carriage by members of the West Scandinavian Royal Guard. Which took her to the Frederiksberg Palace, where a banquet was to be held after the Constitutional Signing Ceremony. As the carriage approached the Palace, she could see the huge crowd Gathering at the Frederiksberg Park, where a platform was built for the ceremony. The carriage stopped at the entrance, and as she walked down towards the platform people bowed in respect to her.
She climbed the stairwell which gave access to the platform followed by the former Danish and Norwegian heirs. She walked towards the lectern. She was very nervous when she started her speech. “Dear brothers and sisters, today is a very important day to our countries. Today is the day when two shall once again become one. For almost two centuries our countries have been separated, not only by the Baltic Sea, but also by politics. Now is time for us to speak up, and unite ourselves once again as a single nation, united not only by politics, but also by our rich linguistic and cultural heritage. Once we sign our new constitution, the very last step for our union will be given”, she said, followed by applauses from the crowd. One of her aides then gave her a golden fountain pen, with which she signed the document. The crowd applauded even louder, while the former Danish and Norwegian heirs also signed the document, which officially created the United Kingdom of West Scandinavia.
