The Rooster Reborn hung silently in black space, the Defender class ship was positioned in the far northern corner of Techon Space, along the edge of unknown space. The ship was a dull grey, but over all and all, the ship was just dull. It was a knock off of the old ship, The Rooster, which was destroyed in a valiant fight against Techon's greatest enemy, the Xan. That ship was crewed by the best, it was one of the most important ships throughout Techon's history. The Rooster Reborn was just a miserable attempt to relive glory. This was a science vessel, sent out on exploration, nothing like the conquering older version.
'But not everything in life is fair.' Or so thirty year old Brian McDough thought to himself as he sat in his office. He was one of the scientist on board the ship. He never liked it, but not many people did. His office was cozy at least, a brown wooden desk with one light on it, a book shelf, a nice swivel chair, and a couch. He took off his glasses, and rubbed his eyes, then put his glasses back on. He looked at a picture of his girlfriend; Anna Drowry. The ship had deported from Techon's capital nearly four months ago. He had only talked to her once since then.
"Doctor McDough?" A voice came, accompanied by a knock at the door.
"Come in," Brian said.
A younger man came in, looking about twenty-six, he was wearing a black sweater and had on dark navy blue pants. Brian looked at him and raised an eyebrow, waiting for him to continue.
"My name is Jeff Kleig," The man said. "I've been reassigned to your department from physics."
"That's a bit of a change of fields, physics to medicine?" Brian said. "Why have you been reassigned?"
"They said I was no good at physics, but they couldn't just kick me off the ship," Jeff said with a slight laugh.
Brian shook his head and pulled out a folder from his desk, he opened it up, and wrote something down. Jeff stood in the doorway still. He glanced around, unsure whether to leave or not.
"Nice office," he said.
"Thanks," Brian said, and finished writing, and put the folder away. He looked back up at Jeff. “We’ll figure out what to do with you tomorrow, right now I’m tired, you’re bunking with Adam Drector. Down in room 209, got it?”
“Yes sir,” Jeff said, and walked out of the room.
Even though Brian was young, he was assigned to be head of medicine aboard this ship, mostly cause there was no one else to take the position. He didn’t really do anything, because really, the entire ship didn’t do anything. It was good pay though. He soon got up, and walked through a door into his personal quarters, he took off his shirt, and shoes and socks, and lay down in bed. He looked up at the ceiling for half an hour before falling asleep.
He wasn’t asleep for more than five hours before he was woken up. A soldier stood over his bed, saying his name.
“What?” Brian asked as he put on his glasses.
“Captain wants you down on the bridge, says we’ve found something,” The soldier replied.
“Is it a cure for all diseases?” Brian asked.
“Don’t think so,” The soldier replied.
“Damn, that would have meant I could retire,” Brian asked, and got up. He put on his shirt, and shoes, and followed the soldier down the darkened cold quiet hallways. He got to the bridge to see some life. People walking around from console to console, but there was one that caught his attention in particular. Mostly cause there were about fifteen people around it, including all chiefs of the science fields aboard the ship, and the captain. He walked up behind them and looked over someone’s shoulder.
“…and look at that, architecture! My God, there used to be civilization here,” said Ronny Kilbown, the director of archeology.
“Any signs of recent life?” Someone else asked, Brian didn’t catch who.
“No,” Said Captain Drumm. “These planets have been abandoned for centuries.”
“Do you think this is it?” Kilbown asked.
“Think its what?” Doctor Meg Anders asked.
“Do you think this is where the Destiny Orb is?” Kilbown asked.
“We don’t know, but we’re going down to look either way,” Captain Drumm said. “There are three planets, we’ll send teams of scientists and soldiers to each one, three teams per planet. They’ll go to the most heavily condensed areas of civilization, and do tests there. If any group spots a sign of the Destiny Orb, report back, and we’ll send more backup to that location.”
“What kind of terrain are these planets?” Someone asked.
“One’s Terran, much like Techon, or say Earth. Another one is aquatic, almost all water, with a few islands, and one is almost completely mountains and deserts. Lieutenant!”
“Yes?” Lieutenant Briggs asked.
“Send word back to Emperor Jonas,” The Captain said. “Tell him we’ve found a system, and that we’d like backup.”
“Yes Sir!” Briggs said and walked over to a console.
Techon
“Emperor Jonas,” Admiral Kayes said bowing. “We’ve received word from The Rooster Reborn. They’ve found a system with signs of ancient civilization on it, they request backup and help from allied nations.”
“Very well,” Emperor Jonas said. “Send out word to any ally that we’ve discovered an ancient system, with potential of great discovery.”
The Admiral bowed, and walked away.
“All nations who are allies of The Galactic Empire of Techon, we have recently discovered a star system north of Techon. This system has signs of an ancient civilization, and we are requesting that any nation willing to send in a team of scientists and troops to help explore has clearance through Techon space to do so.”
