ELECTIONS CALLED AFTER KING MAKES SHOCK ANNOUNCEMENT THAT NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE IS TO BECOME A FULL REPUBLIC
Nouvelle Angleterre is in a state of shock this morning after the elected leader, HM King Tristan MP, announced that Nouvelle Angleterre was to become a Republic. Speaking outside his country residence, the King had this to say. “We are not a Monarchy in the conventional sense of the word. The Royal Family holds a ceremonial position only. We receive no taxes or benefits from the state and I am an elected national leader. This is why I believe that it is in the best interests of the country for us to become a full Republic, which we have been in all but name for some time. I believe that it is the fair and just thing to do to call an election to coincide with the countries new status. I hereby call the first Presidential election of the Socialist Republic of Nouvelle Angleterre. I would also like to announce my intention to stand as a Presidential candidate and I would like to assure voters that my policies and beliefs will not change. Carpe Diem!”
The Nouvelle Angleterrais Parliament is made up of 522 seats. The parties that have signalled their intentions to stand in the elections are detailed below.
THE GREEN PARTY
An environmental based party standing in their third election. Want the motor car to be outlawed and all carbon emitting activities to be banned.
Candidate- Kirsty Bannister MP
Current Number of MP’s- 3
THE CONVSERVATIVE PARTY OF NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE (formerly The Republican Party)
Right wing party that call for the abolition of the monarchy. Tend to favour the well off and look on the poor with suspicion. Have done badly in the last four elections. Sympathetic to right wing regimes world wide. Strongly in favour of immigration quotas.

THE DEVOUT REPRESENTATIVES OF THE HOLY SEE
Devoutly Catholic party whose proposals include turning the country solely Catholic and outlawing the use of the Lords name in all none Catholic circumstances. Have struggled to gain ground in a largely atheist country. Want all proposals to be approved by the Pope before becoming law.
Candidate- Rt Reverend Seamus O'Brien

THE NATIONAL PARTY OF NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE
Far right party, similar to the NAZI's, although despise being liken to the NAZI's because they are not "filthy foreigners". Propose to deport any resident whose family is not of "pure" Nouvelle Angleterre decent going back at least 4 generations. Have growing support in inner-city areas. Leader Richard Walton MP is idolised by the party’s supporters and is an unlikely sex symbol to the party’s female members.

THE CHRISTIAN ARMY OF NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE
A devoutly Protestant party rebound for its policies on sexual behaviour. The believe that sex before marriage is a criminal offence and members must have consent from the parties leader to engage in any sexual activities. They want all non Protestants to attend compulsory "Soul Saving" sessions and want the country to adopt creationism as a national principle. Have lost even more ground since the last election.

THE LIVE FOR TODAY PARTY
Trying to shake off its image of being a novelty party by adopting some serious policies. It wants all citizens to have ID cards and believes vehemently in ensuring life is good for the people of Nouvelle Angleterre in the short term and makes no plans for policies more that 2 months in advance. Their candidate, Gary Phoenix, is the countries most popular male porn star and the party hopes that including short previews of his films in campaign DVD's will increase their vote from the gay and female voters.

THE LIBERAL SOCIALIST PEOPLES PARTY OF NOUVELLE ANGLETERRE (Formerly The People’s Party of Nouvelle Angleterre and the Liberal Party)
The ruling party since the country gained independence from tyrant dictator Jon Hammant in 2002. It is a left wing party whose policies focus heavily on education, healthcare and the environment. Since coming to power it has turned a once frightful economy into a good one capable of competing on the world stage. Civil Rights and Political freedoms, once unheard of, are held sacrosanct and big business is tightly regulated to prevent monopolies. Crime is totally unknown. This Governments proposal of making "Carpe Diem", meaning "Seize the Day", was met with unanimous approval in a referendum. The party that finally named Nouvelle Angleterre as an official Republic.

The election results will be known by 22:30 BST 04-08-06 and many national leaders are expected to come out in support of their favoured candidate
