A Western Wind...

The Open Seas

The waters of the wide blue sea were gentle, nudged on by a refreshingly light western wind. There was no land as far as the eye could see; none for miles and miles. The air was peaceful and broken only by the sound of the waves breaking against the hull a sailboat cutting through the waters.

The sailboat in question was no ordinary boat. Measuring over two hundred and eighteen feet, this yacht was a behemoth of the seas. The custom design cost over a hundred million dollars and for good reason; it was extremely luxurious with all of the necessary amenities, but best of all, it required no crew to sail. Every function of the boat had been mechanized and wired into the main bridge where the sole captain and prized owner could do as he pleased. At the moment, he was doing just that...

Captain John Wolf was the lucky man who could afford such a marvelous boat. He was remarkably handsome, charming, and a billionaire by the ripe age of twenty-four. A self-made man, Wolf had made his fortune in the real estate business, starting as an agent and quickly moving up until he started his own company. Now though, he had decided to take a little time off to enjoy his worldly possessions... and his not so worldly possessions...

From where he stood manning the bridge, Wolf could see the breathtaking figure of Alexia (http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b360/DMG2005/Alexia2.jpg), his first mate - in more ways than one - lying on a lounge chair and taking in the warm rays of the sun. She was an amazingly beautiful young woman with long golden hair that glistened in the warm day's sun and a body with all the right curves. As her nicely tanned body shimmered, there was no doubt in Wolf's mind that he had made the right decision when he first met this splendor.

Apparently, she had finished her sun bathing as she now got up from her lounge chair, sprayed herself gently with a mist of water to cool down, and walked from the deck of the sailboat inside to the luxurious cabin area. Wolf needed no other urging to get him going. After typing in a few commands to the control console of the bridge, Wolf tossed his captain's hat to the side and quickly made his way down the stairs to the main cabin. She would be waiting for him, he knew. Swiftly making his way through the corridors of the boat, he eventually arrived at his main suite. The only two passengers aboard the ship, himself and Alexia, each had their own private suite... but she was evidently not in hers. The door of his suite was slightly ajar and he peered through to see her angelic figure lying on his master bed and looking back at him seductively. I definately made the right decision... he thought as he entered into his room, removed his shirt, and kicked the door shut...

From dusk to dawn, though the seas remained calm, the boat was a'rockin all through the night.

Before racing down to the main cabin area, John Wolf had let the boat loose, meaning that it would just go where the wind took it. That night had been quiet on the seas as a western wind continued to blow them across the ocean, but far from it inside the boat... It was good there were no other passengers or crew members, because the noise would have kept them up all night.

But when the sun dawned the next morning, it was once against peaceful and quiet. Alexia was still sleeping soundly in the main suite, while Wolf went on deck to get some fresh air. It was another beautiful day with the sun warming the air and the water sparkling off the side of the boat. Leaning over the railing on the port side of his wonderful sailboat, Wolf stared into the light blue-green depths of the water. They seemed lighter than usual, but perhaps it was just his good mood after the previous night. As he stood in his robe, drinking coffee, he heard the sounds of a gull overhead squawking and looking for fish.

He glanced up at it briefly before returning his gaze to the soothing waters below. Wait a minute! He did a double take, looking back up at the gull as it all suddenly hit him. Why didn't I notice it before? The light blue-green water, the presence of a seagull... it could only mean one thing: "Land ho!" he shouted excitedly as he sprinted to the starboard side of the boat and saw a beach and open land laid out for miles.

His cries of land obviously woke up his 'companion' who walked sleepily from the cabin to the main deck. When she arrived, Wolf had already sprinted up the stairs to the bridge where he was checking his instruments and satellite read out. "I've found new land!"

"What... are you talking about?" she asked between yawns as he came running back down with a piece of paper clutched in his hand.

Waving it in her face he proclaimed, "Terra Recedentia! A massive land just being colonized by the few nations who have found it.... and the wind has guided us here! It must be destiny that brought me to this land!" Sure enough, the piece of paper she managed to wrestle away from him so that she could actually read it, was a printout from a satellite showing them stationed just off the southern coast of an eastern island of Terra Recedentia.

"This is unclaimed land! Ours to do with as we please!" His outburst continued excitedly as he practically danced around his ship in glee. When he finally calmed down, Alexia had taken a shower and returned in a pair of short shorts and a tight fitting, tank top.

"Come on... we are going to go exploring," the captain stated as he anchored the large yacht a few hundred feet from the boat and lowered a dinghy so that they could explore the new lands. The two clamored in and Wolf sped off towards the beach in line for a new adventure...

As they traveled across the calm waters to the beach where destiny lay at hand, there was an understood silence between the two companions. They said not a word to each other the entire journey from the boat to beach as there was nothing to say. Their minds were still attempting to understand and analyze what this new discovery would mean for them that their voices were lost.

A new life? Alexia contemplated as she sat at the front of the dinghy on one of the sides. By no means was her life back home bad, especially since she met John Wolf a couple of years ago, but this was an opportunity few would ever know. The ability to shape a place exactly to your liking weighed against the place that has shaped you exactly to your likeness... It would be a tough question to answer when the time came, but now she had to remind herself just to enjoy this time.

The repetition of continuous sounds - the motor of the boat, the waves crashing against its sides, the seagulls cawing above - had provided an easy setting for her mind to wander and forget about reality, but the sound of the motor slowing down brought her back and made her mind actually take-in what her eyes were staring at. A pristine beach... unmarked by man... uncontaminated by mankind. Her blue eyes peered over her shoulder and into the water surrounding her and were met with a very similar pure color of blue. She could see all the way to the bottom, not more than ten feet down, where the pure white sands graced the ocean's floor. As she stared down at the water a school of Holacanthus ciliaris - better known as Queen Angelfish, a beautiful and elegant looking fish - swam by without caring that her hand, which she had dipped into the water, was only inches away. "Remarkable... unscathed by hostile interaction."

John Wolf apparently didn't notice what she was talking about if in fact even noticed she was talking. The glee of finding a new island that would be all his was still sending waves of dopamine through his brain, sending him into a state of euphoria. "We are here!" He announced triumphantly for the world to hear, though no doubt there were no other humans within a hundred miles at least and probably more. They were indeed 'there,' floating just a foot from where the waves broke against the white sandy beach. Wolf hopped out of the boat from the back first only to find that where he stood in the water was only a foot deep, and was soon followed by Alexia. As John pulled the dinghy onto the beach so that it wouldn't float away, Alexia was drying off her feet and slipping on a pair of hiking boots for their venture. When she had finished tying up her boots, so had he finished tying up the boat, and then it was time to hike...

The two crossed the adequately sized beach and found themselves in front of a beautiful scene. "This is amazing..." Alexia uttered as she stared open mouthed at nature's beauty. "It is like a thinly layered rainforest. I've never been to a naturally occurring rainforest before..." It was particularly thin, especially near the coast, so that crossing through it wouldn't be that hard - it was nothing like what most people expected a rainforest to be. Although, it was quite pleasant and the sounds of numerous different animals resounded off the trees. The two explorers noticed all kinds of birds, animals, and a few of nature's beauties, like small hidden waterfalls, as they walked hand-in-hand through the new land of dreams...

After hours of wandering through the realm of the untouched, Alexia and Wolf returned to the beach with a new view on the world. Quickly as could be, John dashed to the boat and removed a satellite communication device, though he would actually be sending the signal through his yacht's dish as it was much stronger. Alexia collapsed onto the warm sand of the beach and kicked off her hiking boots as John exchanged a few brief words on the phone. She rolled up her shirt so that the sun reflected off of her toned stomach as he hung up his call. "Can you believe this? I mean... can you actually believe we are here on this unexplored land without anything human in hundreds of miles?" She asked rhetorically.

"M'lady," John said quite chivalrously as he reached into the dinghy and removed a pole. Alexia leaned her head upwards to see John sticking the pole into the beach, and now she noticed that there was a textile attached; a flag. "Welcome... to Wolf's Isle."

Paradise
"You... mean...?" Alexia asked as she leaned forward even more, startled by his words. John wasn't one to joke around about something so serious - of course he was and had a sense of humor, but certainly not with what he was talking about - this much she had learned by now.

"Yes, I do," he replied calmly as he walked through the warm sand towards her. "This territory was officially sanctioned as property of one John Frederick Wolf and ratified in the name of the Dominion." He beamed proudly at his accomplishment. With one quick phone call to his friend 'downtown' in the government, he had successfully acquired a large piece of real estate that was prime for development and could easily be advertised as a little piece of paradise.

A smile appeared on her face as John stood over her. "Come here you...!" She grabbed him and pulled him down to the sand where they wrestled playfully before embracing lovingly on the sands of paradise...

Two Weeks Later
Somehow, someway, the two lovebirds had managed to pull themselves apart long enough to jump on the dinghy and make their way back to the yacht. The first night they had decided, rather more by indecision than convenience, to sleep on the beach... if you could call what they did sleeping. The next morning, the once perfect and untouched sands were messy and disheveled as if a storm had come through.

But that was all two weeks ago... Two weeks before Alexia caught sight of the first heavy transport ship on its way to the island. As she stood at the bow of the large yacht, a massive transport ship could be seen in the distance over the waves. Wolf's dream was becoming a reality, even if he just had this dream a couple weeks ago. After finding the island and exploring what little of it they could on foot, John hurriedly called back to the Dominion and once he received territoriality over the island, he contacted Mar'ki Ticron; a friend and very powerful man. Risking nearly all of his multi-billion dollar fortunate on the proposal, Wolf had bought a town's worth of pre-fabricated buildings (though very nice ones to be sure) as well as a large team of contractors to build everything and install infrastructure. The next step was to create a marketing plan that would entice the well-off to move or at least buy real estate from him on the island. The final step was simple: to wait. Thousands of miles away from home, John and Alexia waited on the pleasurable yacht until that fateful day would come.

And now it had. First it was just one ship, but as it got closer, Alexia noticed another one following a short way behind the first... and then another, and another, and another. The convoy of HT-LD (Heavy Transport, Low Draft) ships had arrived. "John! John! Come quickly... they are here! The boats are here!"

Wolf, who had been snoring as he napped in a hammock on top of his boat, startled awake by her cries, sprinted down the stairs and arrived at the bow of the boat next to his lover. There was no mistaking them. The gargantuan ships steamed on closer and closer to shore. The pair of 'explorers' stood waving their hands to get the attention of the convoy, though no doubt they had already been recognized as the only sign of civilization for miles...

Over the next few days and weeks, much to the joy of John Wolf, the crews from DMI worked rigorously to set up the town and create enough infrastructures to support many thousands of people. A beautiful town was established right on the waterfront, so the least amount of the rainforest possible would be destroyed. Other than the small town itself, the contractors also built a port slightly to the west of the town so that large ships would have an easier time unloading but would not interfere with the town's tranquility and sereneness. In the north, near the border of the claimed territory and unexplored lands, a small fort was built to house a military presence and maintain an outpost in case some unknown or known people attempts to invade.

The Dominion Military sent a small task force of one hundred soldiers and an assortment of vehicles to man the fort and protect the townspeople, but they would never be seen as they remained through the rainforest and down a long road that stretched for miles. The town was connected by a system of paved rods - though they were abutted by grass at most points to maintain the feeling of being in a resort rather than a city - but other than that, there were almost no other roadways to be seen. The one other official road ran from the port, into the city, up into the rainforest where it winded around, passed a farm half way up, and eventually arrived at the military base; this was there 'highway.'

The town was settling in nicely and numerous people, over a thousand, had flocked to the new colony. Many of them were wealthy, if not at least well-off, and bought up expensive tracts of land and houses. Under the Colonial Charter of 1879, the creation of the colony was officially completed with the establishment of town hall at the center of the village. The crews and transport ships shoved off for home with the new colony brimming with energy. The colony was thriving; paradise had been discovered...

Sunbathing on the beach in a skimpy bikini and sunglasses, Alexia looked up when a shadow shrouded her and blocked her precious sun that had been bathing her in warmth for over an hour.

Standing over here, Wolf seemed almost giddy as he said, "I have something to show you."

"What?" she asked as she propped herself up on her elbows to get a better angle.

"You have to see it," he pouted with a puppy dog face that he knew she couldn't resist. "Come on." Without waiting for her, John darted off the beach and in a moment's time was standing on the grass outside of Town Hall.

Following behind, Alexia arrived a moment later wondering what she was looking at or for. "What is it...?" she asked, full well knowing it wasn't the establishment of Town Hall, which she had seen yesterday and celebrated all last night...

Without saying a word, Wolf pointed to the fresh lettering above the door.

One Week Later
A week after the official establishment of the colony, joy was still in the air and it was time for the big celebration. After receiving confirmation of their colonial status, the people of Alexandria quickly went about organizing a party to celebrate the occasion and to thank the two people who had all made it possible. And tonight was the night of the Grand Ball of Alexandria...

A banquet house had been constructed in less than six days for the purpose of holding the ball. It was quite large, though much of the building was hidden in the woods so from the front it didn't appear that massive. Inside was lavishly decorated with the reds and purples of royalty and deity, thousands of flowers from all around the world, statues, sculptures, paintings, and artwork of uncalculated value. A large, crystal chandelier graced the high ceiling and hung over the marble floor from a good height. And to top it all off, a marble stairway, laid with red carpet at the entrance so that all of the guests could see those being introduced. A beautiful site if there ever was one...

The trumpets blared. "And now," the herald at the top of the stairs began to announce as the chatter died down and the guests below turned towards the elegant entrance way. "May I present to you... Count Jonathon Frederick Wolf of Alexandria and the Duchess Alexandra Griffyn." The two entered the Grand Ball with grace and elegance as the people below clapped gratefully for everything they had done...

Three Weeks Later
"Sir, sir! It is here!" A messenger went flying down the corridors of Town Hall after John Wolf, the Executive Minister of Wolf's Isle. "It is here!!!" The messenger continued his cry all the way down the hall until he nearly collided with his objective when rounding a corner. "Sir! It is here I tell you!"

"Slow down... take a deep breath... now tell me, what is here?" Wolf asked, attempting to get the messenger to relax enough to actually deliver his message.

The messenger did as Wolf advised and took a long moment to gather himself despite the glee. "Sir, the main office just received an inbound fax from the mainland... they sent the writ."

"Well why didn't you say so!" Wolf declared, as he sprinted down the hallway towards the front of the building where the main office was located. The light wooden door flew open as his outstretched arms pushed it away. "Where is it?" he demanded excitedly.

The entire staff of the main office, eight people to be exact, was standing around an empty desk that had naught but a piece of paper and an official pen. One of them pointed to the paper in front of them, though it was all too obvious where the document in question was. With lightning speed, Wolf was leaning over the desk and reading the document.

Writ of Ascendancy On this day, the 17th of June in the year 2006, the Dominion of DMG hereby issues the following Writ of Ascendancy to the Dominion Colony of Wolf's Isle. At the same time, the Dominion will no longer be required to provide military, economic, or any other kind of aid. For all intents and purposes, the Colony of Wolf's Isle will be a sovereign territory - of the Dominion in name only.

Once he signed the document, the small garrison of soldiers in the north would be removed via UH-48 Highwind, but he had a previous agreement for a supply ship to stop at the port once a month to drop off the necessary supplies. But first, he needed his witness. After reading it, Wolf ran from the main office, out the main entrance and into his awaiting jeep that was kept running by his official driver. "Quickly now... drive like the wind up the highway."

The driver confirmed with a quick, "Aye, aye," before slamming his foot on the gas pedal and tearing down Main Street until it merged into the highway. The jeep screamed down the road as he began pushing eighty even on the winding and dangerous route through the rainforest. Had he not been so carefree and full of glee at the moment, Wolf would probably have been going insane at the prospect of veering of course and smashing into a large tree. But at the moment, it didn't matter; there weren't likely to be cars on the highway - there never were - and he was in a rush.

Less than ten minutes later, the jeep screeched to a halt out front of a grassy plain enclosed by a wooden, two-barred, fence. There was a very large wooden building that was the stables for the animals on the ranch and just off to the side of it was a vastly smaller building for the owner, Alexia. A little wooden sign hung on a signpost, blowing in the gentle wind: Delassena Ranch.

Wolf leapt over the door of the jeep and hurdled the fence of the enclosure. "Alexia... Alexia! Come quickly!" he cried as he took a few steps into the green pasture and stopped.

The ground began to shake lightly as Alexia rode down towards the man on the back of one of her prized animals... an elephant. Delassena was an elephant Ranch set on vast area of land for the herd of one hundred elephants that Alexia had imported from Kreynoria. The elephant she was riding stomped up close to Wolf and stopped obediently, fully responsive to its rider. "What's up?" she asked.

"Come on... I need to show you something," he said urgently. The words flew from his mouth like rapid-fire.

"Well, what is it?" she asked though she was already sliding off the beast and onto the solid ground below. The way he spoke, she knew it was important and at the same time she knew she wouldn't receive an answer other than...

"Just come on - you'll see."

They climbed into the jeep, Wolf in the front and Alexia in the back, and sped off back down the winding road. The way the driver was flying down the highway, Alexia knew that it was definitely important and now she was eager to find out what it was.

Arriving outside Town Hall, Wolf barely even let the jeep stop before jumping out and pushing Alexia to move faster. He took the steps three at a time, bounded through the main entrance past the two guards, and into the main office where the same staff of eight still stood vigilantly over the lone document. John waited excitedly at the door as Alexia came a moment later. She walked into the office slightly confused at his behavior and gave him an odd stare before noticing the staff of the office standing over a desk. Another inquisitive glance at Wolf and she strode to the desk, reading over the paper. As she did so, an apparent smile overtook her face from ear to ear. Of course!

"Are you going to sign it?" she asked, wondering why his spot remained unfilled.

"Yes..."

"Well what were you waiting for?"

"My witness." He walked towards the desk where everyone was gathered and took a seat in the leather chair the way a proper dignitary would when signing such an important official document. With the official pen of the Dominion, he elegantly signed his name and placed the pen back in its holder. He looked over it again and then pushed the chair back, standing for all to see. "And now... if you will," he said to Alexia, indicating the chair.

It was an obvious gesture that even she in such a state of elation could not misinterpret. She smiled once again at him before taking his seat and pen. She read it once again, just to make sure it truly was real, and then over the three signatures, Vincent Alexander, Marius Templarica, and Jonathon Frederick Wolf... and the blank spot. She moved the pen to empty space and began to sign, barely remembering to write Alexandra Griffyn instead of Alexia.

"Thank you, Minister," Wolf commented as he took the official parchment and gave it to a nearby aid.

An odd term, Alexia thought. But then it dawned on her. Her memory flashed and she realized what it said under her name in tiny script: Vice Minister of Wolf's Isle. She was officially the second in command of the territory, right below John Wolf. "Oh my...!" was all she managed to say after a moment of silence in which they simply stared at each other, completely ignoring the other eight men and women in the room. "We're going to have to celebrate..." she added seductively with a gentle touch of his face. "Meet me in thirty at the house..." she stroked his cheek once and then walked out the door, swishing her hips behind her.

As she exited the Town Hall and took the jeep back to the house they were sharing as lovers, Wolf had his aide fax the signed document back to the Dominion and then frame it. It would be placed on the center wall for all of the people to see when they came through Town Hall. "I think I would like to have the honor of hanging it..." John said to his aide as the document was placed inside the perseverance frame and sealed against the elements.

"But of course, Minister," the man replied as he handed Wolf the framed document.

The party of nine strode out of the Main Office and to the center wall of the Hall, directly across from the Main Entrance. A nail had already been put in place weeks before in anticipation of the event... and now was that time to hammer it home. A photographer was brought for the event and found a good spot to capture the scene from just to the side one of the entrance way pillars. "Prefect..." the professional said after five minutes of tinkering with everyone's placement and appearance. He walked back to his camera aside the pillar and looked into the viewfinder; John Wolf stood at the center, holding the framed document as he was about to hang it on the peg, with his staff flanking on both sides. "Don't move an inch..." the photographer warned as he backed away from the camera and held the button in his hand. What a scene... He jerked his thumb on the trigger and shot...
