Mer de Noms, Mer des Ennuis — The Armed Republic of Mer des Ennuis announced the finalization of plans for a new super computer array, codenamed "Earth Array 1." The system is based on a quad core processor, each containing 8 megabytes of eDRAM. Each core, based on a classified 128-bit architecture, is rated at a maximum sustained rate of 19.6 gigaflops, and is potentially capable of higher bursts. The entire system, taking up a massive 22,500 square feet and held in 576 cabinents, contains a total of 2,359,296 cores. The system is rated at 46.24, and holds a wopping 1,179 terabytes of DDR-2 memory. The system, drawing in over 13 megawatts, is powered by a small Supercritical Light Water Reactor, and is cooled by a classified non-conducting liquid. "Earth Array 1" is 128.45 times as powerful as Blue Gene L. The system is also revolutionary in that maintenance is totally automated: Small tracked robots remove and replace all failed components, helping to eliminate potential human contamination. It is unknown what the system itself will be used for.
