Roughly South is anything south of: Upper Nile, Bentiu, Shamal Bahr Al Ghazal, Gharb Bahr Al Ghazal. North is everywhere else.

Background

Since the recent destruction of Egypt by nuclear weapons the federated United Republics (Egypt, Sudan, Palestine) fell apart and each nation looked to their own future as independent states. As the Sudan moved towards intoducing a republic parliamentary system there was opposition from those living in the south of the country. The Northern and Southern parts of Cyprus had traditionally been ruled as two seperate autonomous states during the colonial period.

Both sides are distinctly different, the North being little more than desert centred around the productive Nile valley and being predominantly Arabic Muslims, the majority of the population live in the North. The South takes after other ex-British East-African territories with English being the most widely spoken language, Christaianity and traditional African religions taking the majority. The vast majority of the nations agricultural land is in the South as is 70% of it's oil resources. With the world depression and famine beginning these will be important resources.

The introduction of a Republic system with proportional representation would give control of the country to the North (with more people there), the Southerners did not want to see this occur and sought to retain control of their resources. A bill passed by the parliament to make Arabic the official language of the nation is the final straw for the South who determine to secede from the North as a sovereign nation.

Start of the Conflict

Southern members of the recently returned military forces mutiny in several of the Southern towns at being forced to speak Arabic. The mutinies are generally supressed by the Arabic troops but several mutinies are supported by local police and civilians and the forces take several small towns. Southern forces are largely ex-military personnel and many students, they take to Guerrilla warfare successfully taking control of Bahral Jabal, Sharqal Istiwaiyah and Gharbal Istiwaiyah provinces and contesting other southern provinces. Northern patrols come increasingly under attack and more and more forces are being diverted to the area. Civilians increasingly come under attack from both sides for supporting the enemy, and casualties gradually climb into the hundreds.

The North will use the advantage in equipment and numbers to try to overwhelm the South quickly. The South will attempt to hold off the North using a combination of popular support in its home ground and guerrilla tactics.

Diplomatically the the provisional southern government seek help from abroad, as it is clear that the more populous North will win a prolongued campaign. If the South receives help the North will call upon fellow Arabic nations for aid. Though the war is still in its infancy and few military moves have been made.

OOC: See RL 1st Sudan Civil War for background. Though the situation is quite similar to the American Civil War (populous industrial north, less populous rural South)!

The Arab Republic quietly offers troops and aid to the northern government though transportation of military forces is a problem.

The Southern provisional government officially requests that the UN steps in to help to stabilise the situation and claims that the north is being imperialistic and imposing its laws on provinces which have not been able to voice their opinions.

The North states that this is not the case, that the new laws were decided by a democratic vote in the republican parliament and that the situation is not a war and merely a minor occurance of civil unrest and will be dealt with by the rightful Sudanese government and its allies. Much is made of the fact that the government was elected by the people and that the laws which have caused such unrest have been voted upon by the representatives of the people.

Nigeria immediatly recognizes the South and calls for intervention to prevent the total destruction of the Southern nation. Nigeria warns the north that failure to recognize the south's independence will result in intervention by Nigeria on their behalf.

In the meantime, the government diverts aid, in the forms of money, small arms, and equipment to the South. ((OOC: Five points))

Nigeria's Elite Light Infantry Division is ordered to stand-to, along with the marine brigade.

SECRET IC: Nigeria begins putting pressure on Chad to allow the passage of supplies and possibly troops into the Sudan. Incentives, such as increased trade and other improvements are offered.

In response to the Nigerian intervention in the conflict, the Arab Federation announces it refuses to recognize the Southern rebels as a ligetimate government as they made no attempts to use peaceful methods to deal with their issues. While the Arab Federation realizes that some of the measures handed down by the Sudanese National Government were unfair, the Arab Federation feels that local autonomy and international peacekeepers are the solution, not sensless violence on the part of the Southerns.

The Arab Government begins calling up its military forces and quietly asks what remains of the Egyptian government for military access.

France calls for non-interference in the internal affairs of the Sudanese people by any power other than the UN, by this a treaty may be crafted comitting all powers to this, with the possibility of sanctions to violators.

In addition, The French will proceed to present this matter in the UN and call for an international peacekeeping Force to intervene.

The Nigerians are "quietly" asked to support this.

Nigeria quietly responds that they will abide by the UN, but should they feel it is neccessary they will intervene to save the Southern nation.

OOC: I think you guys are realistically moving way to fast on this, nothing major has happened yet and with all the other world distractions most people would be focused elsewhere, especially France. Give it time to develop, this isn't the information age yet where you can go online and find out something that just happened minutes ago.

OOC: Ture, but the FID probably has some operatives in Sudan.

OOC: The following occurs prior to any international responses, due to the fluidity of the guerrilla war.

IC: An ex-army officer, Joseph Lagu, comes to lead much of the Southern efforts against the North. He begins to improve the military training of his warbands and operates against government depots to retrieve weapons and ammunition for his cause. Operating in small units out of remote camps the rebels are almost impossible to track down and eradicate but are too scattered to make large operations possible.

The government based out of Khartoum sends more troops to the South to stop the rebels and around 4 brigades of troops are operating there at present. As attacks on military convoys mount and the number of successful raids on rebel camps dwindles Khartoum authorises the use of force against civilians related to or otherwise supporting rebel activities. This results in many being killed or taken to military run "refugee camps" which are little more than open air prisons.

Several of the richer Southern civilians flee the country to exile in nations such as East African states, The UK and North America. These richer civilians were plantation/farm owners, oil extractors, mine operators or other landowners and soon the Southern forces are receiving small shipments of arms and ammunition from the relatively open borders of Ethiopia and the Congo. With coffers swelled by this aid Joseph Laguproclaims the creation of the Southern Sudan Liberation Movement (SSLM) based out of Juba in the deep South and near to illegal gun running routes.

Both sides remain deeply committed to their cause and prepare to raise further forces with foreign aid that both are expecting.

OOC: Prepare for this conflict to go on for at least another 10 years guys, it's a very difficult situation for both sides to win. A satisfactory peace treaty may end it early though but the UN will have to be careful of its wording and think about what an ideal conclusion would be as the RL treaty was poor and resulted in the 2nd Civil war.

At this point foreign intel agencies will begin to get some details of the conflict with the Arab Federation, Federation of East African States, Nigeria and other African nations finding out first. Followed by MI6 and KGB (due to experience and size), with Europe, South America, Asia and Oceania following closely. North America finds out last as its intel agencies are temporarily in turmoil following the Twilight War and the split up of the USA and Canada.

After a while world news agencies will pick it up and might be able to get several reporters in the country to get pictures out.

OOC: KND doesn't find anything out? I'm assuming that the KND guys in the Mideast are still there and operating to the best of their ability.

OOC: KND doesn't find anything out? I'm assuming that the KND guys in the Mideast are still there and operating to the best of their ability.

OOC: As stated the KND discovers alongside the rest of Europe (right after the "big" intel agencies). Would probably have heard at the same time as the KGB and MI6 but the nuclear blasts at home unsettled them a bit, the CIA suffered as well due to the factionalisation of the USA and Canada.

Within a few days of each other everyone knows anyway, especially when the media gets onto it.
