Roughly South is anything south of: Upper Nile, Bentiu, Shamal Bahr Al Ghazal, Gharb Bahr Al Ghazal. North is everywhere else.
Background
Since the recent destruction of Egypt by nuclear weapons the federated United Republics (Egypt, Sudan, Palestine) fell apart and each nation looked to their own future as independent states. As the Sudan moved towards intoducing a republic parliamentary system there was opposition from those living in the south of the country. The Northern and Southern parts of Cyprus had traditionally been ruled as two seperate autonomous states during the colonial period.
Both sides are distinctly different, the North being little more than desert centred around the productive Nile valley and being predominantly Arabic Muslims, the majority of the population live in the North. The South takes after other ex-British East-African territories with English being the most widely spoken language, Christaianity and traditional African religions taking the majority. The vast majority of the nations agricultural land is in the South as is 70% of it's oil resources. With the world depression and famine beginning these will be important resources.
The introduction of a Republic system with proportional representation would give control of the country to the North (with more people there), the Southerners did not want to see this occur and sought to retain control of their resources. A bill passed by the parliament to make Arabic the official language of the nation is the final straw for the South who determine to secede from the North as a sovereign nation.
Start of the Conflict
Southern members of the recently returned military forces mutiny in several of the Southern towns at being forced to speak Arabic. The mutinies are generally supressed by the Arabic troops but several mutinies are supported by local police and civilians and the forces take several small towns. Southern forces are largely ex-military personnel and many students, they take to Guerrilla warfare successfully taking control of Bahral Jabal, Sharqal Istiwaiyah and Gharbal Istiwaiyah provinces and contesting other southern provinces. Northern patrols come increasingly under attack and more and more forces are being diverted to the area. Civilians increasingly come under attack from both sides for supporting the enemy, and casualties gradually climb into the hundreds.
The North will use the advantage in equipment and numbers to try to overwhelm the South quickly. The South will attempt to hold off the North using a combination of popular support in its home ground and guerrilla tactics.
Diplomatically the the provisional southern government seek help from abroad, as it is clear that the more populous North will win a prolongued campaign. If the South receives help the North will call upon fellow Arabic nations for aid. Though the war is still in its infancy and few military moves have been made.
OOC: See RL 1st Sudan Civil War for background. Though the situation is quite similar to the American Civil War (populous industrial north, less populous rural South)!
