OOC Interest thread: The Throws of Imperialism

THERE IS A CAVEAT FOR ENTERING THIS RP!

The purpose of this RP is to provide a backdrop to another RP I am running. The other RP is telling the story of civil discord and infighting within my feudal nation.

This RP is of an imperialist expansion by one of the feudal families who felt slighted by the last divvy of land. This family is a fraction of the total might of my country. Since I am using a subdivision of my nation I am posting the force disposition of the Koptev family below. It is secret and I am only doing it as a courtesy to keep me honest to the other players.

This RP is going to have the Koptev family invade a small fictional nation. I will not put as much effort into RPing their reactions but they will be played by me. Now I expect some of you to rally to the defence of this nation certainly. I hope however that you will keep it reasonable.

As for trying to stop the Koptev family here is the skinny. You can manhandle the Koptev’s a bit with no worry that the other feudal lords will intervene. If you attack Otares proper or go crazy then the country will rally around the Koptevs.

What I am hoping to see is a coalition of smaller nations band together and fight the Koptev family in the field. I was hoping to get some good RPers who would go through the motions; diplomatic contact, chastise the federal government for letting this happen, try to supply the small nation, and finally – maybe – mounting an aid force.

In essence I want to tie the Koptevs to this endeavor. They will bolster their numbers with a draft later, build more equipment and generally pour money into what I hope the other players will make out to be a quagmire.

To give some of you ideas here are some roles that I was thinking other players might play.

Med – Large nation: A benefactor of the Koptev’s victims. This nation will try to evacuate foreign nationals – send in humanitarian forces etc. I could also see this nation sending equipment and aid to the defenders. Tanks with no crews, munitions, well trained officers but no force commitments etc.

Gaggle of smaller nations: Nations who are obviously concerned about imperial actions. These nations fear for their own safety but are small enough that the force I have outlined below is a considerable deterrent. These nations will petition, cajole, embargo, and eventually move against the Koptevs.

Med – Large nation: The exploiter of the situations. I would expect these nations to have companies offering contracts to both sides. Paramilitary organizations deployed to protect national interests – but they basically standby as their trading partners are slaughtered. These nations might pay to have portions of airports leased to them – which these use to bring supplies into the country.

I know that I have been vague but based on what I have put up so far is anyone interested? Questions are always welcome.

My nation will probably be unable to put actual soldiers on the ground, so I'd be happy to have my government play the diplomatic mediator/covert aid to smaller nation, while I have one of the large corporations act as an exploiter.

Siap you’re more than welcome. I plan on starting soon irregardless of how many people want to join. I want this to be at a certain point before I continue another RP – which is running concurrent to this.

Here’s the map of the country.

Next I will post the governments of the Koptev family and of Burnica. Quick bios and then I will start. This should give players all they need for flavour text. I will also include information in the bios that other players can RP getting. Stuff that puts interesting perspectives on the conflict – ex. Burnica has previously maintained clandestine operatives in all Otariet noble families. It has only been in the last 12 years that they have stopped this process with a more isolationist left leaning government. (I will also put up political compass scores for both belligerents.)

The Koptev family is one of eight noble families which pledge their allegiance to the ruling family in Otares. A late joiner to the articles of The Kingdom (the constitution of the feudal system in Otares) the Koptevs once stood opposed to uniting the Otariet people. While historical details are scarce, and some sources suggest a military skirmish, the family was inducted into the agreement some 112 years ago.

Since that time the Koptevs have aggressively pursued new territories. Koptev barons would send many more troops, proportionally, than their peers in support of Otariet expansion missions. The house itself has never opened negotiations with outside entities without the federal government present, the only exceptions being accepting surrenders so that land might be obtained with some veneer of legality.

The Koptevs were the prime instigators in more than four dozen internal border disputes. The Otariet court has consistently warned, cajoled, chastised and even fined Koptev barons for their roles in what other – more stable – countries could only call coups or uprisings.

The Koptev family possesses more centralization than other noble families in Otares. This has meant that the military effort of the family functions on par with that of a free standing army of a nation of comparable size. While other noble families might have competing generals, interests, and politics inside their own ranks the same cannot be said for the Koptevs.

Proven in battle many times over the Koptev troops often form the ‘shock troops’ of Otariet actions. Brutally efficient the Koptev troops have gained themselves the recognition of the other families so much so Koptev military officers have become bartering pieces between nobles. When lords negotiate settlements it is not uncommon to see land trade hands – with the serfs being bound to the land. With these officers the reverse is true – with land being traded for landless officers.

“We are a company of firsts. We are the fastest and fiercest. We are suited, supplied, deployed, victorious, entrenched on the prize, and court marshaled for raping the women before those other bastards are even called.” ~ Captain Adrik Egorov after having taken four hills, two towns, and a large city in three weeks of continuous advancing. The captain was served with his court marshal when Ruzolky family troops came to relieve him. Waving the court marshal over his head and smiling the captain looked to his media liaison and was quoted as saying “Told you so.”

Politically speaking the Koptev family is a strong unit in the Otariet court. The cohesion that their troops display is mirrored at the federal level. While other families can expect some of their more influential members to barter their positions away for personal favors the Koptev family makes a habit of shooting those lords who do not vote the way the chancellor instructs them.

Koptev designs on Burnica seem to stem from several main motivators. With Otares having recently annexed the entirety of the land mass it rests on there are no longer any proving grounds for their troops. This period of prosperity has marked the longest term of inactivity for Koptev troops.

Burnica possesses three heavily developed cities (Moncton, Bathurst, and Saint John) which would greatly increase the Koptev family’s industrial output. Moreover two of these cities possess port infrastructure of note – Bathurst having an easily defended harbour and an operational sub pen, while Saint John is an expansive deep water port which could easily be expanded for larger operations.

Finally reports have begun circling at the highest levels of the family that the area around Minto (in Sunbury) possesses an untapped oil field rivaling the largest in the world. While very few are aware of this those who are can see that Sunbury North will be a substantial objective for any Koptev military action in Burnica.

Burnica is generally peaceful parliament ruled nation two days from Otares. Centuries ago it was used as a way stop to settle Otares, but beyond that and the Grand Manan Island Agreement the two nations have little to no contact.

Burnica at one time kept active tabs on its violent neighbour but over time isolationist tendencies pervaded its parliament and the clandestine operations were closed down. With a new government elect every four to five years Burnica has long since forgotten the issue. Otares – and its noble families – is another matter. With no real executive turnover it remembers all too well the clandestine operatives prying military secrets from the country.

Burnica’s economy is primarily service based – with a well educated middle class being its most profitable tax base. Burnica boasts an impressively small rich poor divide as well as almost no unemployment to speak of.

Burnica’s military is maintained mostly out of tradition than anything. Given time and the prevailing trend one could expect to see military spending halved in 12 years. This recession of spending has shown strong prospects economically speaking because Burnica has managed to both lower taxes and post 18 annual surpluses. Within three years the country will have repaid all of its lenders, mostly domestic, and be generating considerable surpluses. This has attracted foreign development around the coast and the hub city of Monction.

This amount of political freedom and economic prosperity has attracted illegal immigration from Otares, mostly to the Island of Grand Manan. With a fair sized ethnic Otariet population there the federal government of Otares demanded that the community be recognized. This lead to an agreement wherein the two countries both contributed to the development of the territory – allowing it to spend the money to develop and govern itself.

While not diplomatically active Burnica still maintains an embassy with Otares as well as a few other select nations.

(OOC: Hey sorry for the delay the expatriate community should be in Minto. There is an airport outside of Bathurst, Moncton, Saint John, and Fredericton. So the closest one is part way between Fredericton and Oromocto. It’d be about an hour’s drive on a winding rural highway to Minto. (at about 80-90kph)

Um...yeah

Spc. Kesson has been redeployed since the last post. As have the Betas. I am in the middle of a war that began as a "lovely little war" and was expected to be over briefly, but now a large portion of my army is engaged in a brutal CI war. Apologies, I had forgotten about this. I will post again, I just need some time.

The war itself should be over fairly. There's just a matter of demobilizing my 1 million man army, recovering economically (my nation has few natural resources so there were major shortages). I also kinda need to deal with the number of refugees created by the war (not sure the exact number, somewhere around 10 million, probably much more).
