Excalibur Class Ballistic Missile Submarine CSS Broadsword, somewhere in the north-east Pacific

Life was quiet aboard the submarine during strategic patrols around the pacific rim. Nothing ever happened that was serious enough for the message to go to Retaliation failsafes, many of the crew simply sit at there stations waiting for somethign to happen.
The boat toted 32 of the newest nuclear weapons delivery system in confederate service, the Eclipse II missile. Derived from the Poseidon Missile, each weapon carries an enourmous nuclear payload of up to 14 475kT warheads, giving each submarine four hundred and forty eight warheads, with a combined explosive yield of two hundred and twelve point eight megatonnes, easily enough to wipe out an entire nation and reduce its remains to nought but ash. This was the second of newest class of ballistic missile submarine in the service of the navy, it was being introduced to allow for the older and smaller Vanguard Class Submarines to be phased out, leaving just the Excalibur and Shield classes to take custody of the entire Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile Armament of the Confederacy.

Then something the crew had never seen or expected to see happened, the priority gold teletype machine started chattering, spitting out an emergeancy dispatch from Confederate Fleet Command in Peurto Princessa.

ALL BALLISTIC AND GUIDED MISSILE SUBMARINES TO GO TO FULL RETAILATION FAILSAFES, CODE ECHO-TWO. MASSIVE LAUNCH OF BALLISTIC MISSILES BELIEVED TO BE OF STRATEGIC SIZE HAS BEEN DETECTED BY BALLISTIC MISSILE WARNING SYSTEMS, DESTINATION AND ARMAMENT OF THE MISSILES IN UNKNOWN HOWEVER WE BELIEVE THAT A NUCLEAR EXCHANGE IS NOT UNLIKELY BASED UPON WHAT WE KNOW OF DOOMINGSLANDI FOREIGN POLICY
LAUNCH CODE FOLDERS TO BE VALIDATED AND OPENED IMMEDIATELY, ALL MISSILE-LAUNCH CAPABLE SUBS TO COME TO GRADE-2 BATTLESTATIONS MISSILE AND ACTIVATE YOUR RETALIATION CLOCKS, CYPHER SETTING AS OF THIS DATE AND HOUR OF SENDING. ALL SHIPS AND CREWS, GOOD LUCK AND LETS HOPE WE ALL GET THROUGH THIS.

TARGET PACKAGE:- DOOMINGSLAND ONE ALPHA ECHO BRAVO TWO DASH NINE
BREAKBREAK

Due to the small possibility that this machine would ever be used more than once or twice once it was installed it had been simply fixed to the top of the primary radio decoder assembly, a notoriously delicate peice of technology, had the machine been a normal printer the vibrations would have no effect, but this was a chattering teletype machine, the sudden vibrations were transmitted through the decoder casing and onto the printed circuit board, where it resonated with the natural vibration frequency of a certain essential resister, one of the solder ends snapped and broke the connection, preventing the submarine from recieving transmissions in a way that was almost impossible to find unless one looked for it incredibly carefully, the problem was the crew had just been ordered to maximum alert so any loss of communication would be unoticed due to the standard comms blackout. And in forty eight hours the sub would come to grade one battlestations missile and initiate a retaliatory strike for an attack that never happened

OOC: This is slightly based on Crimson Tide and Dr Strangelove

OOC: You and Doom are idiots for doing this. I would have expected better from you both. Any nuclear missiles get launched, I'll shoot them down. I can't have this BS affecting trade and stability.

OOC:
What do you mean? I havent said that the missiles are going to be launched yet, thats all in the future.

I agree, I will also have interdictions if any are launched.

OOC: I doubt you anyone can stop all 448, and to tell you the truth, this is leading up to the internal nuke fest that will begin my civil war, inwhich there will be lot of ballistic missiles flying about, i would like you not to shoot down those as they are essential to the story line.

OOC: Tough, I'll shoot down as many as I can and I'll ask other nations to help me. Simple as that.

OOC: How exactly do you expect to provide global coverage with your SDI system, and how effective is it?
Hirgizstan
11-07-2006, 15:27
OOC: 98% effective with around 400 SDI Satellites and 4 SDI Modules. I also have THAADS, MEADS and ABL systems. Not to mention other nations who will not want you to launch missiles and will happily help me shoot them down.
Tell you what Spizania, you don't stop this idiocy and I'll talk to people about cutting off all your trade. No oil, no fuel, no food, no nothing. Heck, I'll pay them for lost revenue, and whats not to like about that? Think about this long and hard.

OOC:Um, im sitting on top of huge amounts of oil, and im not short of any other vital commodity, not with the New Valley Project.
Six hours after Broadsword Launches, the nuclear part of the civil war will all be over. There wont be time for your threatened trade cutbacks to take effect

What does that horde of sats actually use to shoot down Ballistic Missiles?

OOC: I'm talking about after you launch. You only have Yemen, not much oil there. In RL they only produce 387,000 barrels a day, I say you'd be able to get that up to 500,000, but thats still not much. Your only sitting on 4.37 Billion barrels there, not very much at all.
My SDI system, called SAAMDS, uses lasers.

OOC: Check the map, i have Oman and half of Yemen, easily enough oil to supply what will be left of my war machine after the nuclear strikes

OOC: What about food? Technology? Consumer goods? Not much food growing land in the desert, nor in Antarctica. Face it, I can squeeze you if I want to. And if you launch, I'll scupper your missiles and then squeeze you.
