Current Year: 2479 BE (1936 AD)
Head Of State: King Ananda Midhol Rama VIII
Prime Minister: Dr. Pridi Phanomyong
Recent History:
2475 BE (1932 AD)-
On June the 24th, a bloodless coup d'etat by the self proclaimed 'Promoters' headed by Phraya Phahol Pholphayuhasena, Lieutenant Colonel Plaek Phibul Songkhram and Dr. Pridi Phanomyong removes much of the power from the monarchy and installs constitutional monarchy in Siam. The current King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) accepts this change and gives up much of his power to a democratically elected parliament headed by Prime Minister Phahonphonphayuhasena of the People's Party (Khana Ras). Pridi Phanomyong is made Finance minister and starts a major economic reform system, nationalising much of the country's resources.
2476 BE (1933 AD)-
Army and Airforce units clash with and supress a group of loyalist rebels, led by Prince Boworadet, trying to restore King Rama VII to power. Most of the Loyalist forces came from the Navy and Marines. In an incident in which the gunboat H.T.M.S. Ratanakosindra opened fire upon army units guarding the goverment buildings in Bangkok fierce street fightin ensued, it was eventually stormed by infantrymen of the 1st Tahan Guards Division, in the resulting fighting the leaders of the Loyalist rebellion who were onboard at the time were captured. The 2nd Tahan Cavalry Division meanwhile clashed with rebel Marines in bloody fighting outside Bangkok.
After the Royalists were subdued even though the King distanced himself visably from them relations between him and the Khana Ras government substanially worsened.
Meanwhile the internal conditions within the Kana Ras part started to change a rift between the Civillian Left and the Militarist Right steadily grew.
2477-2478 BE (1934-1935 AD)
During the first parlimentry elections in Siam Pridi Phanomyong was elected narrowly elected prime minister disagreements within the party become louder with the Civilian Left supporting Pridi and the Militarist Right rallying to Phibul Songkhram whao was appointed defence minister.
In this new position Songkhram exercisesd his power by expanding the military to assert Siam's independance against imerialist powers and gave many long speeches on the inefficiencies of a civilian government compared to a militarist one.
During the election most of the civilian Right or Royalist supporters lost their positions and seats in the National assembly. With this loss of support in parliment the King gave up all hope of regaining what influence he had and abdicated from the throne.
His ten year old nephew Ananda Midhol was named his sucessor. Ananda was to continue his studies in switzerland for the moment whilst a regency council would fll his position, the council included major Khana Ras figures as Pridi Phanomyong and Phraya Pholphayuhasena.
