The Armed (ironic I know) Republic of Germania V is currently looking for the help, advice and opinions of more experienced nations on training, supplying, equipping and maintaining a force of roughly 500,000 soldiers, and a 10,000 man specialized goverment guard, with a view to rapidly expanding in the future. A rough outline of the cost or help to refine and further discuss these ideas would be appreciated.

OOC: Well, I'd go to one of the various storefronts around here. A lot of them have starting kits, and I think some of them (Pudite Millitary Arms springs to mind) have kits for individual soldiers that are country specific, so you could outfit your troops with German weaponry.

The Ansurian Empire maintains more than a million men under arms, and would gladly share it's field experience and advice with Germania V in return for good international relations.

OOC: Half a million right now is far, far too many to be practical. A big military on NS is 5% of your population, and that would be 250,000 for a brand spanking new 5 mil nation (You). I normally use either 0.7%, or (right now) 1.1%. It doesn't sound like much, but I usually find that I don't need more.

OOC: Oh, this (http://nstracker.retrogade.com/index.php?nation=Germania+V)should be extremely helpful. Let's you know how much you have to spend on military equipment.

Ok, maybe our ideas of a 500,000 man military were a bit hastily planned, I would be happy to settle then for a 240,000 man military aswell as the 10,000 man specialized government guard. I was originally considering the factor of compulsary military service when I came to the conclusion of half a million.

If 250,000 is an acceptable amount, then how about now getting down to talking about what exactly I will need to purchase in order to obtain an impressive standard of military personnel.

The Armed Republic of Germania V is more than happy to maintain good international relations with any nation which is willing to help in the upgrading/advancement process.

(OOC: The Aeson, what are these storefronts you speak of?)

OOC: Basically, it's a place where you can buy weaponry. There's all sorts of different types. I've linked a few below.

DMG (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=440478)

Kriegzimmer (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=409787)

United Earthling Military Systems (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=471334)

Pale Rider Arms (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=454065)

There's quite a few others as well. You can also buy things besides weaponry in some of them.

At this present moment in time the government of Germania does not see the reasoning behind any need to purchase missiles or anti-missile defences. Your invitation may be taken up in the future, but for the time being we will not be pursuing your offer.

I'm just going to call this a discussion thread from now on. It'd take too long to say this within the confines of IC letters.

Firstly, your military is divided into the three or four arms. Army, Navy and Air Force. Marines are either a seperate service, a la Amerika, or part of the Navy. Navy and air isn't really my thing, and I find ground combat makes for far better rp anyway, so I'll tell you a bit about the Army side.

You have your infantry. Infantry comes in four or five flavours;

Light Role Infantry or Light Infantry
Mechanised Infantry
Armoured Infantry
Airborne Infantry
You might also want to include specialists, like the US Army Rangers. This might be your 10,000-strong Guards regiment that you said about.

You can form your army around either Light or Mechanised infantry, or even change depending on the objective. Armoured Infantry is more of an assault unit, as is Airborne, though most Airborne units are used simply as hard-ass regular infantry.
Everything else, including tanks, close air support and helis, complements the infantry. The British Army has around 300 Main Battle Tanks for it's 100,000 army personnel, so that should give you an idea of proportions. The German Bundesheer is a more mobile force, made up of Mechanised and Armoured infantry supported by heavy battle tanks and armoured artillery.

Before you can make your army, you need a structure to build it around. Choose - Foot or Vehicle?

At the moment I'm just looking at a huge mass of footsoldiers. I'm not interested in the navy or airforce for the time being, and if I was to start buying tanks or other vehicles my defense budget would be gone in an instant. I would first like to fully equip the soldiers and then if there's anything left maybe supply them with some light armoured transport vehicles.

I am also considering shortening my force again to 200,000 soldiers, and forgetting about the governments personal guard for now as that can be covered by the police and/or the military during peace time.

Alright. You have 200,000 patriots outside your front door, armed with nothing but party pamphlets.

What kind of rifle are you looking for? Cheap and cheerful with an AK, outside the box FN FAL or battle rifle, or a high-tech high-cost carbon this that and the other Colt or H&K tech monster?

From this link I have compiled the following basic idea of guns I would like for my force of 200,000 soldiers, but I have not yet considered other things, bombs, explosives, uniforms etc that I will also need to purchase. Also I will need to know how much I am able to spend.

200,000 x M9 Beretta ($263) = $52,600,000
100,000 x Patriot MP ($600) = $60,000,000
75,000 x M-16 Series ($595) = $44,625,000
10,000 x Dakota T-76 Longbow ($3,300) = $33,000,000
5,000 x M60 7.62mm Machine Gun ($6,000) = $30,000,000
5,000 x Benelli M3 Super 90 ($870) = $4,350,000
5,000 x RPG-7 ($960) = $4,800,000

That is basically for every single soldier one primary weapon, and one standard issue handgun which would have the role of a back up weapon. Plus I would still need to purchase ammunition for all of the weapons, and possibly hand to hand combat weapons.

The Aeson made a post earlier, with a link to your nation on NSTracker. That shows your defence budget.

I guess the M16 is a good mass weapon, and would suit a cheaply-trained force. The M249 would be a better choice than the M60, as the ammunition is identical to the M16, easing logistics.

Sorry to break off right now, but I have to go out.
