PROJECT ETHEREAL
Black Department Research Station, High Earth Orbit
The gathering of the research team had taken months. Just tracking down some of these elusive scientists had tested the resources of Starfleet Intelligence almost beyond its limits, but finally, some of the finest scientists from Earth and the near systems had been gathered together, employed by Black Department. Each one was aware of the important of his or her job, and each was aware of the potential rewards. Eventual fame and glory, as well as recognition as the greatest in their fields.. However, up until this point none of them knew what specificallythey would work on first. The entire staff, 75 scientists, had gathered in the conference room to be told.
Admiral Kelly stepped up to the podium at the front of the room, draped in medals and ribbons gained from years of service and near-space exploration. Frowning, he shuffled his papers. Kelly was unassuming, short, with greying hair and a rough face, he'd been in the military for a long time, and had definately earned the right to head up this department. Clearing his throat quietly, he began to speak.
"You have all been offered employment in this department because you are the best Starfleet can get. Many of you lead your fields, astrophysics, chemistry, quantum science. Starfleet has hired you because you have skills others don't. Starfleet needs those skills." Kelly paused for a moment, for effect. " For some time, the Admirals have been talking about the tactical possibiities that would arise if we had a system that would render our ships invisible to the naked eye and enemy sensors. We need you people to work on this technology. The full resources of the Starfleet Scientific Bureau are at your disposal. Get to work,and earn that extortionate pay!"
Immediately the room became a flurry of movement and nosie, with scientists scurrying off to their assigned labs and offices.
Admiral Kelly just stood and watched.
They better be worth it.
