"...perfection is finally attained not when there is no
longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away."
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was a cold day in the frozen North of Klatch. Outside the city of Moskau was pitch black. Bombers had hit the power station, but the Presidential Palace still had it's backup generators going.

Brezhnev wasn't a young man; he was short, broad, greying. He looked older now. The stress of fighting a losing war against a numerically and technologically superior foe was wearing him down. Maybe he could fight off the Lords of War, and maybe he could fight of the Vrakians, but not both, and it looked increasingly like the Vaadians might become involved too. He stared out into the darkness as the snow began to fall over the deceptively peaceful city. Tonight maybe the enemy would come again and that fragile peace would be shattered as the flames lit up the darkness.

"So." the man across Brezhnev's desk, seating in a black swivel chair, pushed his spectacles up along the bridge of his nose, "Do we have a deal Mr Brezhnev?"

The voice was cold and crisp, lacking emotion. Somehow Brezhnev found anyone with that kind of voice hard to trust, "So you believe that your ...machines can save us?"

The man nodded, "Absolutely, I can bring in thousands a day, all you need to do is allow my... men shall we call them, set up a matter transmitter in Moskau."

"Matter transmitter." Brezhnev shook his head, it sounded like crazy talk, "And you cam to Dyelli Beybi in a matter transmitter you say, and headed up North here, why?"

"Because." the man smiled, a smile that never touched his cold blue eyes, "The Dyellian Race needs it's freedom from Klatch. Soult is happy to be their dog, but you Mr Brezhnev are not."

"How do I know I can trust you?" Brezhnev growled.

Had the messenger that had meant to go north to him reached Brezhnev he would know full well just how far he could trust the man, but the messenger had been waylaid by the Lords of War, and wouldn't be reaching Moskau any time soon.

"You don't." the man smiled again, "You'll just have to trust me. You have nothing to lose though. The Lords of War will defeat you and enslave your people without my help. I give you an alternative."

Brezhnev nodded then sighed, "Very well Herr Himmler, you have yourself a deal."

"Just one more thing." Himmler had made no move to move from his seat, "If you come across a Dyellian Commisaar named Zara Alwood. Kill her, immediately."

"Why?" Brezhnev hated mysterious requests.

"She is dangerous." Himmler shrugged, "If you go up against her, send only your best and send them in numbers... and make sure she's really dead."

"Why?" Brezhnev repeated himself more forcefully, "Why kill this woman?"

"There are things that should never be mentioned aloud." Himmler grunted, rising to his feet, "This is one of them. Goodbye Prime Minister."

Brezhnev watched the man leave, then raised an eyebrow. A panel slid silently from the wall, revealing another man, who stepped out, massaging his elbow. He was a tall man, dark hair and van Dyke beard with more than a touch of grey. His features were almost cadaverous, "I don't trust him."

"Aye Felix." Brezhnev grunted, "But what choice do we have? We're damned if we do, we're damned if we don't. I will take this risk."

"He was up to something." the man named Felix grunted, "I had him watched when I was with the Cheka. He isn't human you know... or Dyellian."

"I know." Brezhnev shook his head, "He's the only hope we have."

"I just pray we're not making a big mistake." Felix grimaced, "He has these concepts of a 'master race'."

"I believe that’s us, the Dyellian people." Brezhnev finally turned from the window, "That's what I'm gambling on at least."

"I really hope so." Felix grimaced for a second time, "For all ours sakes."

Adams gave the creature a dirty look. It stared back at him serenely. He hated this, hated working with elves. There were three of them who had come with the cold man with the spectacles, Adams was sure he'd seen him before somewhere. They were tall, blonde creatures with blue eyes and unreadable expressions. They wore some kind of armour although he had no idea what it was, it looked metallic and seemed to fit together in interlocking greaves. He hated it, elves. Dyellians fought the elves, they didn't build machines for them...

A tall man sidled up to Adams, he was wearing a thick brown great coat, dappled now with a few snowflakes, a thick titanium helmet adorned his head, a Dyellian made SSA-1801 assault rifle slung over his shoulder, "How's it going Engineer?" the accent was Dyellian, not Moskauan, he was from the South too...

Adams turned to look at the man, "Should be all go in five minutes Sir."

"A word." the Septsnaz officer said no more, walking off towards Adam's office, could have asked before he walked in Adams didn't voice his concern. The officer was a Polkovnik... the Polkovnik, meaning he was head of Spetsnaz.

Adams followed the man into his own office. There was already someone else there... a woman. Quite pretty, fine features, slim, black hair and dark eyes. She was similarly decked out in a greatcoat, "May I present the Assistant Director for KGB Moskau." the Spetsnaz officer nodded to her.

She smiled, looking all together too friendly. Although if rumours were correct the woman in front of Adams was as kind and idealistic as she was cunning and deadly. It was an odd combination, he couldn't quite figure out how it worked, "It's a pleasure." she smiled, shaking his hand, her accent marked her as a third Southerner "I understand this machine will be up and running soon?"

Adams nodded, "Yes, we have power, basically it's just a case of turning it on."

She smiled, a half smile, implying she might be about to bring Adams in on some personal joke, "Got the safety in place?"

"Yes, it's as safe as houses." he nodded, not entirely certain what the Agent was trying to imply.

"I mean this safety mechanism." she nodded to the Polkovnik.

The man produced a blueprint from inside his shirt, presenting it to Adams. Adams spread the paper on his desk, it was crumpled, and a bit damp in spots. Inwardly he noted never to trust Spetsnaz as a courier service, "Let me see... what the devil? That could overflow the system, blow this whole place to Kingdom come."

She smiled sweetly, pointing to a particular spot on the diagram, "Only if you press that button I believe."

"You want me to install, what is basically a bomb under this machine?"

"Yes..." she nodded, "Don't tell Otto what you're doing... this can be our little secret."

"But... why?" Adams couldn't help but ask.

He expected no answer, and was surprised when she looked him seriously in the eye, "You have a right to know I guess... we don't trust the Elves. I believe something will come through this 'matter transporter', but as to what it turns out to be... well... best to play it safe."

"You could say." the Polkovnik grunted, "That we're hedging our bets."

"Are you guys sticking around?"

"Not me, Polkovnik Morris will, but I must leave before Otto realises I'm here." she smiled apologetically, "But I will keep an eye on the situation from nearby... I'll see you two later... take care."

She ducked out of the office, the Polkovnik watched her leave from the doorway, "Pretty thing isn't she."

"Mm." Adams wasn't really certain if he should comment on a High Ranking KGB officer. She had been quite a shock, probably not much over twenty years of age.

"So yeah... make sure Otto doesn't know what you're doing."

"Who's Otto?" Adams finally asked, he'd been wondering all through the short meeting who the girl had been referring to.

The Polkovnik looked at him askance, "You don't recognise him? Weedy fellow, spectacles, blue eyes."

"Him?" Adams nodded, he knew the man they were referring to.

"Former High Chancellor of Dyelli Beybi?" the Polkovnik suggested, "Now in league with the elves.

Adams suddenly realised where he had seen the man before. The shock was too much for words.

Chlarissa Dashwood pulled the greatcoat tightly around her as she stepped out into the frozen Moskauan night. The cold light of the facility behind her looked positively cheerful. Ahead, four red lights marked the helicopter landing pad. Snow was falling lightly, adding to the thick cover that adorned this part of the world. She was better suited for the weather than most Dyellians from the South. She had been born and raised in Quisa, the heart of the desert. At night Quisa dropped well below zero, but here it felt colder. She stepped out into the dark...

----------

"What are you doing under the machine?" the voice was cold and crisp, Himmler.

Adams rolled the trolley he was lying on out from under the matter transmitter, "We need to fit a device under here but the wires need to be disconnected first."

"I thought you said we would be running in 5 minutes." he paused, "This would be the device Chlarissa Dashwood gave you the plans."

"What, no..." the Engineer protested, but was seized by one of the elves, and hauled upright.

"You will reconnect what you have disconnected, and then you will activate the machine. Now!" the last worst was yelled. It was the first sign of emotion from the former leader of Dyelli Beybi.

Adams gulped, then nodded.

----------

"Hi!" Dashwood called out to the pilot.

There was no response, although the man could obviously hear her. It took half a second to realise something was wrong. She cursed... why had she buttoned her pistol under her greatcoat? She began fumbling with the buttons of the greatcoat. Her fingers were numb with the cold, slipped. There was a click behind her head, an all too familiar click. She raised her hands. Moments later everything went dark...

..."Wakey, wakey Djel." the accent was unusual.

"Gah?" she gasped as the world began to come into blurry vision. There were bodies and some kind of strange indented cone with three pipes extended from one end... no, there were lots of cones. She tried to move. She couldn't, discovering she was bound to a chair.

The speaker was one of the elves, "Thought you were clever didn't you?"

He seized her chin, forcing her to look up into his frozen blue eyes, "You can't touch us." she gasped, "Tainted blood."

"Not any more." the elf smiled, "Things have changed."

"It is most interesting Chlarissa." the voice was from behind her, but she recognised it.

"Hello Otto." she was beginning to feel faint again, she closed her eyes.

"Do you want to know why you are still alive?" the former High Chancellor asked.

She didn't reply, but he continued anyway, "You're the most pure blooded Djel I have ever encountered. Nearly no human blood whatsoever. Your blood will allow me to discover where I went wrong all those years ago. Then, when we are finished with you this whole Continent will once again be the property of the original inhabitants. No more humans, Walruses, Orcs, Goblins, Feegle or those ridiculous talking foxes and certainly not one last Djel."

The Front Lines....
It was mid-afternoon. And the only sound that could be heard was artillery to the north...the wrong tone to be Varian. The Moskauvites were once again likely trying to take out an embedded Var tank before the evening came on again.

Seldom was there rest for the Mosakuvites...The Var attacked both night and day...the Var and their tanks.... massive black alien pillbugs...floating...turning on a dime....firing armor peircing rounds from ports on their front...

The Var soldier was just as bad...shoot one and they fell...then get back up to shoot some more...the tall ones...those that were not of this world....they carried weapons...weapons that could wipe whole squads off the map.

The forests kept the airships at bay...but not the tanks...nor their cousins...nor the men in green...they liked the dark shadows of the woods...they liked the darkness itself.

And when the tanks did not come...the rain of death from above did...round upon round of artillery fire...heavy...heavy as a batteship would throw...down upon the defenders...and their defenses.

Where the Moskauvites dug in...the small drones would find...and the shells...the shells from the gravships would fall.

And behind the lines...the airships hunted...hunted for the supply lines...hunted for bridges and choak points...to destroy...to weaken...to win.

Timeru
Was a spot on the map now...The Var had not spared the city in the seige...the people hid under the city...the city was swept away.

And then the sound...the inhuman sound of the drills...drills with bits as large as a barrel of oil...drilling not for gold...not for water...but for tunnels...for bunkers...and behind the drill bits came steam...steam and carbon monoxide...steam to scald...monoxide to kill...

On the surface...the Var took prisioners...those who escaped the steam and the oderless death...those who stayed were the dead...even those who had not yet meet their maker.

And the Moskauans fought on. Fueled by a bitterness at what had happened in one of the Nations dual capitals, they fought with that strange fanatacism that occasionally overcame the otherwise fairly gentle Djel/Dyellian race. They fought for pride. They were fighting an enemy they percieved as honourless... and their were Orcs in the Army as well... they just hated the Var.

The Armour they threw at the LOW advance was good quality, although there was little enough of it and often used with little skill. The infantry though, were good. Snipers with comperised case guns could take out infantry or light vehicles, leaving horrific wounds on their victims, while the standard SSA-1801 assault rifle was both accurate and hard hitting (although slow firing and useless without a tripod if used on full auto).

Then there were the more unconventional weapons. It had been suspected the Dyellians had stolen a fair amount of anti-matter from the HEPA project. This was confirmed when the first anti-matter land mines and artillery shells were encountered. It was unclear how much the Moskauans had, bu it probably wasn't much. They used them sparingly.

What they did have in abundance was nerve gas. Whatever it was was some refinement of Sarin. It was absorbed through the skin and eyes as well as inhalation and was extremely deadly, but decomposed within a day when left in the environment. It tended to be lobbed in small shells. The Var would encounter a few abandoned firing mechanisms over time...

Along with the normal rockets and anti-tank rifles the Moskauans carted around minature anti-tank cannons. When set up in a wooden frame or down a pit, it could be elevervated and the small shrapnel and gas spewing shells lobbed fairly long distances.

It was night... and on a small patch of the front line North of the Highway, everything was uncharacteristically quiet. There had been quite a bit of gunfire earlier, but it had turned into nothing but eerie silence.

Naptu Ezarcar sat watching the forest around the road up ahead. His claw pulled a small rag along one of the rails of his tribarrel. The weapon was too heavy for a terran to use as a personal weapon, but it was devistatingly effective. Three rotating rail guns allowed for 990 darts per minute on a target. The tungstun darts could cut through light armor, but the creamic darts actually burst into fragments whenever they hit something hard.

The sound of someone approaching Ezarcar's position made him turn slightly in his fox hole below a fallen tree.
<Let the Moon of the Fourth House be your guide...> called out to him in low Var.
<May we dine upon the flesh of the Fifth House's enemies...> He replied. The Moskauvites inablity to learn low Var allowed for fairly secure lines. It was hard to fool a sentry with the idiotic statements that they had tried.

Ezarcar watched as two figures walked up the slope and into his position with him. One was obviously a Var, the other a terran. But both were in space combat gear. Ezarcar and his surviving caltap were only dressed in light battle armor. Ezarcar shifted slightly in the large green plates that covered his body, they were scared with bullet hits from the enemy's rifles. The newcomer's gear was quite undamaged.

<Naptu Ezarcar?....>
The Naptu shook his head, a sign of agreement amoung the Var.
<I am Zerptu Aznak, my caltap is here to replace yours and allow you to return to the rear...>

Ezarcar blanched at this. <Am I to be replaced, my caltap has only fourty percent casualties...some others have suffered much greater losses...if we had proper gear against the bastard gas...> The red eyes of Ezacar looked at the combat gear. Designed for use in fighting in space and hostile enviroments it covered the entire body. The plates of ceramic armor meshed with nanotube reinforced fabric that could protect against any gas and even light shrapnel.

<No, your caltap is to be re-equiped. The Lords of the Five Houses have not sat idly by while these vagabons have used such foul means of war. If they wish to kill by poison, then they shall die by poison..>

Ezarcar nodded, it made sense really...if the enemy wanted to use poison gas...then the Var would just equip their warriors to face it.

<That is not the only devious weapon they have...the odd terran gunundergun...>

<Direct your gaze to my Naptu...>

Escar's gaze turned to the terran, and his weapon. It was a gunundergun, obviously a redesign but the original idea was obvious. <The gun of case which she carries was designed from our enemies weapons. Rather than the primative chemical explosive they use, or even the nazar system* of the standard fast rifle of our basetaf*...these use the new light force plates....they outrange the enemy's weapons by twenty percent. And the undergun carries not just the terran HESH but also a plasma grenade.>

<Ah, so the lords have proven that they are not witless....what about the matter that is not? I have seen what those weapons can do...>

<Time runs on...Naptu...you must take your caltap back before the dance again begins...>

Ezarcar rose and walked back over the ridge. His caltrap, now only thirteen strong stood by an APC. They looked identical to the tanks but carried missles, a heavy tribarrel and two caltaps into battle rather than the 200 mm coil guns.

Ezarcar noted the large number of other pillbug shapes. They looked identical to the APC and tanks standing nearby amounst the trees, but there was something wrong about them.
Ezarcar walked over and felt the side, it was not the feel of armor, but of plain steel. Ezarcar turned and lookeked, around.
<They are decoys Naptu...coverings over surplus anti-boarding drones. The tribarrels should make them think they carry many caltaps towards the mountains....now we need to get into our Nazar before the airships cross over...>

2 Terran Hours after night Fall,

They were always silent that far up, you couldn't hear the engine roar. The line of fighters and bombers crossed over the no-man's land of forest between the two lines and began to drop their packages.

They were not bombs, the devices fell every few thousand yards and barely made a dent into the frozen ground. They looked like oversized american footballs or seed pods. The aircraft dropped them from near the start of the Moskauvite front line to twelve miles behind it. They dropped them thirty miles to both sides of the highway.

The devices opened...opened to expel the very gas that the Moskauvites had used against them. But not just that gas...another nerve agent came along for the ride...this one far more toxic but needing to be inhaled or ingested. And a third...a wave of tiny mechanical bugs. Designed to poke holes into plastic and terran fabrics...to perce human skill and inject a poison...or to leave a hole in a protective suit. The swarmed out of the white pods of death

And somewhere in the distance the grav ships fired. Two paths had been picked for their easy climb and lack of any significant obsticals; one to the north of the highway and one to the south. The gravship's guns now began to fall along those paths, to sweep the area of any resistance. For those rounds never reached the ground; fFive feet above the ground they explosed into a hail of case shot the size of a baseball. Each peice had enough with enough power to reduce a tree trunk to kindling...

The final part of this first act was the appearence of hundreads of the pillbugs...in three wide, long lines that pushed forward along the highway and the paths laid by the grav ship fire. The rush of pillbugs would not be stopped by fallen tree trunks...they could float right over.

And in the darkness...the players for act two waited. The gun crews of groundbased heavy coil guns waited for coordinates. The airships circled above the trees waiting for the flash of artillery fire to lead them to their kills.

The flash of Artillery came... but very sporadically. The Moskavite Army was in full chaotic retreat in the centre of the line, although the North and Southern sections were falling back in good order. They had taken casualties from the Chemical attack, heavy casualties, but they had before, in Timaru and the foothills, but they had never dissolved in chaos. Possibly it was the robotic swarm, it made the usual NBC suits useless.

The pillbugs would begin to find things though. Bodies that were obviously not the result of Var attack. Bodies and vehicles with melted holes bored through them, then more bodies, bodies that were not Moskauan. The Armour was far beyond the capacity of the Moskauans to produce... laser weapons... some of these had been killed by the gas.

There were other things out there. Odd cone shaped metallic objects with rounded tops. They were moving, converging, none responded to the arrival of the Var. Converging on one point, a large bunker system right in the heart of the Moskauan centre line.

OOC: Just a very quick post for now. As explained in the FKC forums, I will be out for the night. Will be back very soon, though.

Karma: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=10487507&postcount=340 It does look like they aren't exactly on your soil, but rather at your doorstep. Sorry for the presumptions here. How do you want to work this?

IC:

The true purpose of the Vrakian push through the frozen north was not necessarily to invade, but to stage a bluff in order to cow Timaru and Moskau. However, with the unexpected arrival of orcs and the harrassment of Scandavian States troops in the region, the Vrakians were forced to adopt a more defensive posture. Still, they didn't try to conceal their troop movements in the very beginning which hopefully made the so-called new 'nation' reconsider its options.

Perhaps, though, Vrak forcing T &H caused the breakaway 'nation' to become more firmly entrenched in defending their homeland. Which mattered little to the Vrakians. The outside meddlers lending support only hardened the resolve of the Vrakians to utterly crush Timaru and Moskau. The very real sabre rattling of nuclear weapons was very real - and was not limited to the ground delivery systems that showed up from the Drakonian Imperium to Haven. No, it also included the boomers that Vrak sent from the former New Shironese territory. Territory that Vrak now had a defacto claim over some of the western portion due to the significant military build-up in that part of the Klatch.

Admiral Iruk of the New Shiron Stabilizing Task Force poured over his maps. A part of his fleet was now ready to set sail to reinforce the troops that already landed in Karmanyaka. From there, the push would come into Timaru and Moskau. He turned his head as an aide told him the latest developments and he grunted his approval. Reinforcements would come shortly to further augment the soon coming push. He smiled as he contemplated the Var's rampage in the northern territory.

In the frozen north itself, the Vrakians did secure the vital bridge that was on the way to Timaru and Moskau itself, but didn't advance much further. They were out of artillery range but not necessarily out of aircraft attacks from above. The remoteness of Timaru and Moskau did play into their favour since Vrak had to rely on long-range bombers to wipe out military installions as well as key infrastruce, such as bridges. And the only certain aircover they got was from the aircraft carriers in the North Sea and their own mobile AA platforms.

A temporary airfield was constructed - large enough to accomodate the largest transport planes. More were scheduled but efforts were made to keep the supply line open from the North Sea to their position. To keep up the pressure, long-range bombers from Vrak kept on coming, despite the losses. Reinforcements were also scheduled to come at this angle as well, and someone decided that it would be a good idea to contact the Var in order to better coordinate strategy.

As far as the ill-fated secret Vrakian/Der Angst misson, they were presumed killed in action since no word was heard from them. Still, according to the last report filed by Major Uyut, the Angstians conveyed the impression of them being very, very resourceful.

Far above, Vrakian satellites kept watch. Not only on Timaru and Moskau, but on any outsider. In a word, the Vrakians were edgy and with the latest reorganization in the military, found that many more troops can be realized with more secure private Vrakian companies taking the load for logistics and other non-frontline duties.

War Cruiser Mart'ock, 20 miles behind the lines

The five Var Utlords sat around the holotable watching the results of phase one of the plan. At the top of the table sat a lone human watching the plan also.

Karlord Ne'ta looked away from the blinking lights as another Mosakuvite Artillery Unit was hit with a low yeild plasma rocket that turned the surounding eight acers into an inferno. <It would seem that the plan is working well War Leader...> The Var had addressed the human.
<Too well...the Mosakuvites I thought would have self sealing protective clothing...but this chaos at the center...it is too much...they should have prepared for a counter attack with the gas...>
<What...no it was just too much...the sudden advance just broke them...like the earth proverb of the cow...>
<I thought it was a chicken...>
<It does not matter we have them...let us...>

There was a beep and the Var became quiet as small screens appeared before them. On the screen was a Var, obviously on a ships bridge someplace...<My lords, we are begining to receive reports of a most intresting nature...an unknown force appears to be acting against the Mosakuvites in the feild.>
There were looks between the members of the war council. The Warleader spoke first, <What is the nature of this unknown force...>
<I am not quite sure yet...I have one of the commanders of the advance unit still in contact, I shall direct you to him...>
The screen changed and was filled with static. Now on the other end of the line was a Var and human obviously in somewhat tight quarters.

The Var warrior paused for a second, overcome with how high his communication had been forwarded. <My lords, Uvarc Pathas of Napar...>
The Warleader tapped his finger in impatience.
<...quite my advance line of psudo-tanks have come across some unknown creatures...and some Moskauvites who were killed with...energy weapons...>
<Energy Weapons! Warleader the Overlord has restricted this conflict to only projectile and plasma weapons...to use energy weapons...>
The Warleader placed his hand over his nose to silence the Karlord. <I take it they were not grav-fused lasers?>
<No sir...apparently weapons grade lasers only...and they did some damage to the enemy...we have some unknown bodies...not moskauvite located>

The screen split in two...the commadore reappearing...<My lords...I appologize but apparently there appear to be several mechanical drones within the forest....we have a few sighting of them...there may be more...however we have a rough indication that they are all on a course to a location here...>

The screen changed to a throbing white point over a bit of forest, not far from the bunker.

The Warleader sat back...<Perhaps we have the explination my honored lords...the center is under attack from two directions...from within and from without...>
<But energy weapons?..who in this conflict has energy weapons...the Walruses are mulling around the north and south...the JDF waits along the southern borders to stem any other attacks.>
<And are these Moskauvite drones or this new enemy?>
The Warleader satforward so that the light of the holotank cast dark shadows over his eyes.
<The enemy of my enemy is my enemie's enemy. They may also be our enemy...we shall forward this information to both the Vrakian high command, the JDF and House Crawfnord command. Further, I will be informing House Crawfnord that we will be using energy weapons due to their pre-existance in the feild.>
A Var stood...<If you do that you lose all our rights to this land...we shall be left with debts and no way to recover them...not even your House could recover from such a...>
<The Overlord's instructions were that we were not to use energy weapons unless the Moskauvites did...or their allies...I will take the broad interpertation of that order...and we will refrain from ship based weapons at the moment.>

<Still you endanger our postion...>
<Not doing so may endanger us more...these are Moskauvites...northern Dyellians...their cousins are cannibals...they themselves routinely massacare each other over minor points of power. The Moskauvites may have armed a special unit to use against us...and tested them against themselves first...>

<That is nonsense...they would not attack a front line unit to do a test...>
<Who knows what these morons would do...did they not refuse to surrender at Timeru, forcing us to level the city and force them from their bunkers? Did they not refuse to rejoin the Federation and save themselves from your attack? Pah they are idiots...>
It was completely sarcastic, obviously the Warlord was giving himself a legal pretext.
<Commadore...I want you to focus the land artillery on creating a hemicirlce killing feild between these unknown mechanicals and their target. That should at least slow them down...no direct attacks at the moment...Futher send four captla of marines with grav-lances to the target area for recon. Order a pizbat to secure some of the unknown bodies...and I authorize phase two of the plan with these amendments...>
<yes mylord...>

In the darkness the Var ground artillery opened fire to create a hemi-circle of doom east of the bunker. They shot heavy case shot rather than anything that would deeply penetrate.

The guns of the gravships began following new paths. These were two allow the lines of tanks and APCs to continue to chase the retreating Moskauvites. But along the center, the LOW troops who had been waiting, with their APCs and Tanks at the ready pushed forward across the noman's land and into the gas filled forest. They moved at a steady pace, their gear keeping them safe from the poison gas, and the outer material keeping them safe from the robotic swarm.

High above the fighting four grav-ships that looked like railcars flew over the lines and towards the bunker. The eighty four marines were not dressed in deep space combat gear, but full battle armor. In these they could carry the heavy, compact grav-lance, a UV laser that used miniturized gravity lenses acheive power densities within the square centimeter target area that would cause even the toughest ceramic based lenses to explode.

-The latest communication from the field regarding Timaru and Moskau?
-Yes, High General. The Var have relayed two new dimensions to this war. One is that energy weapons have been reported. Another is that there are reports of some kind of drones being sighted but we do not know what side they belong to. The Var believe that these drones are acting against Timaru and Moskau.
-Most odd. Very well. How are the airfields in the north?
-We have at least two constructed but our supply lines are vulnerable. The commander has increased patrols to deal with the orcs and whatnot.
-And our forces in Karmanyaka?
-Presently deploying. Railroads and roads in that state are presently being utilized. They are not being as…cooperative…as one would hope for.
-I understand. A formal complaint will be lodged through Parliament, but since the war may be over by the time that issue is resolved, I want you to explore other options.
-Yes, High General.
-As well, recall our newly acquired Stalker units from the Klatchworld expedition force. I doubt that it will go forward now with the current troubles. I want at least half of them ready to reinforce our ground troops. Also, ready the SOATs.
-Is that a good idea, High General? Especially considering they are the same units we fought against in the Dozle war? And that the Var may have an adverse reaction to their presence.
-They look the same as what Dozle made, but rest assured, they are ours. Besides, I’ve received favourable reports from the Clairmont theatre. The SOATs performed well against those Imperials. I want to see how well they will do against these…drones. Especially when supported by the Stalkers and our heavy tanks.
-The Apocalypse tank program is not finished yet.
-I know, so we have to make do with what we have. And I’m not ready to deploy our small fleet of gunships. With help from our Seraphim allies, they now can actually fly considering their bulk and have some advanced weapons. But they are small in numbers and the logistical train is, well, staggering.
-Yes, High General.
-And our lastest wet navy ships are in Clairmont. No matter. I have a plan in mind. Meanwhile, patch me through to the Var. If I recall, it was one of the lesser houses we are dealing with at the moment and not their Overlord.
-Yes, High General.

With that, the walrus slide out leaving the older and far more troubled walrus to silently contemplate his next move. He then turned to his screen and looked at the image of the VIS Intelligence Director. A low conversation began…

The bodies... the Moskauans and Dyellians were just begining to experiment with solid titanium. This armour was something else. Were they to run chemical tests, they would find it was interlocking titanium plates, coated with several milimetres of Hafnium Carbide. It had proved almost inpenetrable to Moskauan weapons, it had probabl been designed to offer protection from energy weapons. There were, however, chinks in it, points where a bullet could pass, such as the face.

What was more disturbing would be if they helmet was lifted away from any of the deceased. The ears gave the species away immediately, elves, blood tests would prove Gonad elves... although where they had aquired such technology was a mystery.

What was clear was that the bunker lay ahead like some huge grey mound. Odd blue lights shone out of the vission slits, flickering unusually. A helicopter lay motionless in the gloom, blood spattered the windscreen. Things were watching the Marines out of the darkness. The odd conical drones, if that indeed was what they were. There were hundreds of them around the vicinity of the bunker, they tracked the Grav Ship without moving, the top portion swivelling around, one long 'eye stalk' following. OCcasionally lights flickered on and off on them as well. It almost seemed the Gravships were being welcomed.

----------

Further North, on the Vrakian front, all was quiet. Too quiet almost. When this happened the Moskauans were usually about to try something unconventional...

----------

Miles to the South

Contacting Marshall Davies would become a whole lot more important when the Var picked up the latest development. A beam of intense energy blasting straight out of the Dyellian desert near Cyro, straight up, bounced off a series of sattelites (all owned by the DBFC Corporation), then out towards the empty reaches of the system. There seemed to be no reason why anyone would be firing a beam out into nowhere, however that was only the first matter to be considered.

The second was the fact that even if all of Dyelli Beybi's power Stations were linked together and stopped fueling the rest of the country, they would have serious problems with an energy beam of that magnitude. The third was, it was firing straight out of the bunker Davies had identified as where the Dyellians had built their wormhole gate.

Supreme Republican Commander Ring looked over the satellite images.

"They call us savage and then proceed to wipe out whole cities?" He grunted as he looked at the map of DBAT and the scorches that were once settlements.

"The hypocrisy of the rest of the Klatch is well documented sir. What about this energy beam?" Staff Seargent Eban Emaele said dryly as he passed over another report.

Commander Ring shrugged "Pass that report along to our Navigator Allies, it does not appear to be a weapon, let them analyze it."

Emael nodded.

"What is the word from NAO on the HAARP project? Get Dr. Mettlescmirtze over here, maybe a test fire aimed at the DBAT would cool everyones heels. Call the Minister of Defence too, let's see if we can get approval to swing the big stick, talkning softly so far hasn't attained any results with our Klatchian neighbors." Stated Commander Ring.

Emael raised his fist in salute "Yes sir, as you command." and tirned and left the room. Commander Ring leaned back in his chair and looked over the satellite info and quietly reached over and clicked a button on his console that summoned the Command Generals on duty.

[OOC: Karmanyaka, just remember that the amount of Vrakians allowed as compared to Vaadians will factor into a whole lot of things. ;) Brief post coming up too.

IC:

The troop transports disgorged thousands of soldiers, hundreds of tanks and artillery pieces along with a sizable logistics train. In fact, it would be an understatement if one would say Karmanyaka's ports were suddenly full. Vrak was moving quickly to unload, transport, and then to fight Timaru and Moskau.

As well, a huge number of fighter jets, transport planes, and attack helicopters were occupying a sizeable portion of Karmanyaka's airstrips to reinforce the offensive to the north.

The message was quite clear. Timaru and Moskau would be next and Vrak was also sending a subtle signal to the Vaadians - we are watching you as well.

====

The latest development caused the Vrakians to sit up. Analysts were pouring over the data while planners were running through possible scenarios. Somehow the Dyellians have an unknown power source - but why suddenly show it now? And where were the beams heading? As could be determined, no Vrakian satellites were adversely harmed and checks were being made as to other Klatchian sats. The secretive fusion power plants - which were basically engines from the Dozle war booty - probably could not perform at that output without a very high risk of breakdown.

The Minister of Defence, de facto First Republican, William 'The One-Hundredman' Issem, looked at the reports of Karmanyaka suddenly being flooded with Vrakian troops. He had a seat as he looked over the satellite images and various field intelligence reports. He calmly sipped at his coffee and pressed his intercom'

"Miss Naryan, please summon the Vrakian Ambassador to my office at once, tell him the request to meet with me is being made by the First Republican. Get Commander Ring on the line for me."

His assistant set about contacting the Vrakian Embassy and then connected Minister Issem with Commander Ring.

"Minister Issem, you've seen the satellite images and reports." queried Commander Ring.

"Indeed I have, Adan............." he paused as several messages popped into his 'inbox'. "The council has agreed unanimously to activate the Retaliatory Guard. Your Mandate is to secure all borders that we share with Klatchian and un-aligned powers, and remove any external forces that implicity threaten the borders of The Free Republic. I am summoning the Vrakian Ambassador to explain to him that his nation is to deal with Retaliatory Guard Command , and not the Republican Council."

Commander Ring paused "And if they want war?"

Minister Issem responded quickly and coldly "Remove them from the map. You have the full support of me, the First Republican and the Republican Council. Eliminate the whole of the Federation if need be, they are scurrilous liars and cowards and deserve no more consideration in the Republican Council, we trust you to deal with them."

Commander Ring replied "My Life for the Republic."

With that, the Tollan Massif was closed, the ports of Coventry, South Haven and Costa Tula were closed to all but military traffic and immediately nine Retaliatory Guard armies began moving to the border with Karmanyaka. After a brief discussion, the Velite Commander and the Supreme Republican Commander decided to activate the Velite Guard, adding nearly ten million active Velite Guard to the forces ready to defend the Republic.

In space the station Pyrrhus I powered up fully for the first time, preparing it's Razers to fire and contacting the incoming Navigator Fleet.

The Free Republic had received the message from the treacherous Vrakians, and they did not like it.

The Marines were not quite pleased with the idea of dropping on a bunker in the middle of the line surrounded by bots. The Var didn't trust an AI father than they could throw them. Which is why only two caltaps decended to the surface. One formed a perimiter around the bunker while the second manuvered to find and secure the entrance to the base.

Like all ambassadors, he was quite astute at gauging local reactions and kept abreast of local events. He also was responsible for hosting several socials throughout the year involving several crates of bubbly and harder alcohol. Still, he did remain puzzled with the Vaadians on some aspects of culture and their pyche and only hoped that he was able to communicate the wishes of his government as well as understand the host country’s point of view.

He arrived at the offices of the Minister of Defence and followed the usual protocols until he was face to face with William 'The One-Hundredman' Issem himself. He heaved his two and one half ton bulk and gave a bow to the Minister as his low voice rumbled through the room.

“Of how can I be of service to you today, Minister Issem?”

Deep within the bowels of the Vrak Military High Command, the High General paused as the voice of the Var crackled over the speaker. It was set in conference mode, and so would not only the rest of the most high officials of Command would hear, but the Var would also hear them. Of course, either side could also pick up the handset to make the conversation more private. As well, the techies assured the High General that the line was ultra-secure, with a remote chance of anyone picking up the transmission. Still, he made it a point to be vague if possible.

“Honour be with you, Warleader Karlord Dec'nar of House Betha. I am the High General of the Vrak Military. We need to discuss exactly how to defeat the territory of Timaru and Moskau. As you know, our limitations are evident, but we are mobilizing our resources as quickly as possible – considering the location and climate. As well, I should add the possibility of the Vaadians that may deign to interfere in this operation.”

One full wing (25 aircraft) were now at one of the hastily constructed airfield. Appropriate measures were being taken for refueling and whatnot, while the rest of the ground systems were on heightened alert. UAVs were launched towards the western front lines to try and gauge the relative strength and position of the rebels. The colonel in charge of this particular Man-gunin (occ: about 10 000 troops) took note of the relative quietness. He was ready to roll to the front and add his guns alongside the Var.

There was a pause as the troops landed, then the strange drones began to fan out towards the encircling group, although none moved into sight. Apparently they had been detected by something whether on the drones or bunker itself.

The group moving towards the entrance of the bunker would be surprised to pass through some manner of energy shield. It was hard to judge what it was set up to deflect, or how strong it was, but it was covering the bunker. There was nothing on the way, nothing to fire upon. The place was empty, until they reached the door, there was a CCTV camera covering the entry, and apparently a loudspeaker...

"YOU MAY EN-TER" the voice was harsh and metallic, definitely not a human. The voice had spoken before anyone did anything rash like step into the camera's field of view. Something was watching.

Chlarissa Dashwood groaned. She was still alive, although too weak to even contemplate moving from the gurney she'd been strapped too. Apparently her blood was of great interest to the former High Chancellor. They had drained her until she'd passed out... There were voices...

...energies...

...unparallelled calcium release...

...locate the prototype...

...D'halec...

The lights were spinning. She closed her eyes again and slipped out of consciousness again.

For anyone watching the depths of space, something was recieving the energy beam. A small satellite. It seemed to be projecting something out into space. Perhaps it was a decoy, stealing attention from what was occuring on the ground, or perhaps, something was occuring in space.

Preparations had been made to ship Vrakian troops by train towards the north and the battlefields. Meanwhile the Karmanyakan government was troubled by the recent events.

Having been caught between all the fighting factions, the Democratic Dominion was effectively caught on all sides. To the east was Ilek-Vaad, to the south the Vrakian navy, tho the east and north there were Dyellians, Moskavites, Var and the Gods know what else, maybe even elves.

Prime minister Henry Pommer stood bent over a screen set in the conference table. On the screen troop movements were marked and as intelligence trickled in to the defence headquarters the symbols moved slightly.

"So, if we can't do anything about it, Karmanyaka may become a battlefield when Vaadians and Vrakians clash togehter?" he muttered.

"There are things pointing towards that, yes sir." a grey and wizened general answered. "The Vrakians assemble their forces in the ports of Astridburg and Steamfiord, waiting to be transported by train north to Grotton and Orva. From there they will move northto the border in the mountain passes." he continued, looking down into his papers.

Another general pointed towards the map in the table. "And over here the Retaliatory guard are mobilizing to fend of Vrakian intrusion. It seems there is a deep distrust on both parts concerning the intentions of the other."

"We'll have to try and mediate between the Glorious Kingdom and the Free Republic. We can't have our country trampled by cavalry simply because they don't trust eachother!" Pommer exclaimed.

RE: Vaadian-Vrakian tension

As you may or may not be aware this matter has been relaxed to the care of the Supreme Republican Commander. The Vrakians and any other forces that threaten the Free Republic will be dealt with soley by the Retaliatory Guard.

The Glorious Kingdom has twice threatened war on the Free Republic and the presence of their forces on the Vaadian border is unacceptable. The Glorious Kingdom further sought to hide it's intent by not informing the Vaadian Republican Council of this massive build up. It is quite clear that they are acting in a hostile manner, and it is only a matter of time before the Vrakians, in their continued quest to add territory, make an excuse to stay in your nation on a permanent basis and provoke the Free Republic.

The Retaliatory Guard will act appropriately when the inevitable 'border incident' occurs and we will do our best to reduce Karmanyakan casualties.

This would be an excellent time to remind your counter parts in the Federation that had the Federation allowed a Vaadian Ambassador in Port Olympus, or sent one to Great Lassic, much of this could have been avoided. It would also be a good time to remind the Vrakians that those that have no ill intent, have no need to hide their actions.

We would also like to point out that while the Federation Constitution gives the JDF great leeway in deploying in Federation States, the Kingdom of Vrak has no claim to move through the Territory of Karmanyaka without your explicit consent. This continued consent will weigh with Retaliatory Guard Command when the time for action comes.

One thing that always made the Vrakians smile and snicker was when humans tried to physically intimidate a walrus. Our troops are being deployed in your state so as to assist LOW forces in Timaru and Moskau. Ilek-Vaad has nothing to fear as long as its forces do not enter your state or cross your air or water boundries. As well, you have nothing to fear from us since you are a Klatchian state and Vrak has never went to war against another Klatchian state. Outsiders attempting to meddle in Klatchian affairs are a different matter. It is not our fault that the Vaadians are over-reacting to the situation and cannot locate Timaru and Moskau relative to their own position on a map.

Meanwhile in the Lumpen Republic the Retaliatory Guard began to mass on the border, with the four Heavy Armies, The Panthers, Jaguars, Tigers and Leopards massed directly on the border while about one hundred miles distant of the border the lighter Lancers, Twisted Serpent, Grenadiers, Huscarls and Republicans Armies spread out and prepare themselves. Northwest Air Command is on full alert, it's fighters flying constant cover. The border and airspace with Karmanyaka is sealed and all incoming and outgoing flights and travel is halted. The Northern Border is reinforced with the Scorpion, Cold Ones, Head Hunter, Dark Horse and Fists of Vaad armies, led by the 9th Red Jaguar Command and Command General Itzcoatl, North Air Command is likewise on alert, flying constant cover. The Northern border is like wise sealed.

The Warleader's Bridge

The Warleader leaned back and shook his head. "I am afraid to tell Thee that thy understanding of mine goal is in error. Upon the use of the wicked poison gas that so devistated the Terran Forces of the Five Houses, they did call upon others to assist them. As such, they were limited to only securing the watershed of the Olympic Lake from the foul squatters. Yea, the Houses do not stand against Ye Honorable Vrakians, and shall endevor to do our best to assist Ye in thy most glorious mission. But we of the seven Houses must..."

The Warleader paused as information on the holotank screen began to scroll down. "Tis a waste of breath now fellow Warrior...for it appears thee and I are heraleded to attend upon the Privy Council at once. For our inital fears have proven true...tis the elf terrans of the Gonad who now plauge us upon the feild here. And tis only one foul behmoth who doth have the gift to bring them here. Tis the return of Himmler, the foul elf demon himself I suspect...."

****
The energy feild was noted and cataloged by the entry team. Three Var lead the team towards the door and paused when the voice stated itself. The Var had an long held hatred of AI's and something within their marrow said AI. The battlesuited group of Marines approached the door, their guns pointed down but at the ready.

Klatch One
The four deepspace gunships had left less than two minutes after the sudden burst of radiation. The bunker was considered 'beyond dangerous' to the Var and the deep space forces. They had been sent to alert the various space navies of the Klatch. Fourty minutes after launched they disappeared into n-space, becoming relativily faster than the speed of light.

There was something in space recieving the energy beam. It was small, small enough to slip off most scanners, and it was projecting something into empty space. Further investigation would be needed.

----------

The bunker door swung open to reveal 'drones' organised into neat lines, one had plugged itself into the intercom system, it swivelled, apparently watching the marines through one of the tubes sticking out of it, "You will pro-ceed" it announced with a total lack of etiquette.

"Which one of you is in charge?" this voice was demanded by something definitely organic, a trooper in the inerlapping armour, "The Emperor will only speak to the leader."

At Gordon Bay, the New Shiron enclave in the FKC, intelligence and diplomatic operatives had been watching the situation closely. As relations between Vrak and Ilik Vaad grew more and more tense, a full report was drafted and then a special courier boarded a high speed FTL passenger liner bound for the New Shiron star system. The Navigators and strange high technology traces showing up where they didn't belong also generated considerable comment (ooc what little New Shiron knows of the situation anyway).

The report recommended a massive deployment of space and ground assets if the Ilik Vaad attacked Vrakian forces. Honor required it.

FKC Parliament, Port Olympus
The Karmanyakan Key rose from his seat, beads of sweat trailing down his temples. His face was red and he was visibly trying to control himself.

"The Democratic Dominion is not at all pleased with the development we see. The Free Republic of Ilek-Vaad is threatening to enter Karmanyaka to preempt the, rather far-fetched, eventuality of a Vrakian attack on Ilek-Vaad.

"Now, this is totally unacceptable and Karmanyaka demands that Vrak and the JDF takes steps to avoid any such confrontation with Ilek-Vaad. We will not stand idly by and watch our lands being ravaged by fighting soldiers, whether they are Klatchian or Vaadian!

"Should Klatchian forces engage in armed conflict with Vaadian troops on Karmanyakan territory, we will take action to keep the peace. We will not bother to find out who attacked first, but we will stop it. Karmanyaka has contacted the Vaadian Supreme Republican Commander and will relay the same information to him.

---

Lassic, Ilek-Vaad
The Karmanyakan ambassador to Ilek-Vaad sat on the phone trying to reach the Supreme Republican Commander.

"Ah, yes this is Ambassador Igor Moulin, I'd like a few words with the Supreme Republican Commander..." he said and frowned. "Well... yes, I'll hold, thank you."

The embassy staff were preparing to leave the country in case the situation escalated, and the corridors were lined with bags full of shredded documents as the staff scurried around with stacks of secret papers to destroy. Boxes of material was being loaded into the large transport helicopters outside on the embassy lawn. It was important to leave quickly if things got (more) ugly between hte Federation and the Free Republic.

ooc: took a couple liberties, IV. Hope it's okay. As well, well, I dunno. The Vrakian walruses are larger but whether that means they are also tall enough to look a full grown man in the eye I just don't know. I have to find a walrus expert somewhere.

IC:

The Vrakian Ambassador could not believe the rudeness of Minister Iseem. They act like the pakrahs from Drakonia or Scandavian States he thought as he exited the building. Quickly, using a secure channel he informed his superiors and then, after a few moments, began to carry out a most secure cleansing of the ambassadorial residence. Secure files would be put into a large briefcase and attached to the Ambassador himself while other documents would be shredded, erased, and so forth. Then, the computer equipment would be dismantled and then ruined beyond repair along with other files and storage mediums. The artwork, which was from Vrak itself would be carefully packaged and then shipped while everything else would remain. Finally, after making sure that no important documents were left behind, the ambassador, his staff and bodyguards would leave aboard the hypersonic jet that just arrived that would ferry them back to Vrak Prime itself.

====

The Vrakian key rose to respond.

“It is not our fault that the Vaadians are paranoid. It is not Vrakian policy nor ever will be to inform everyone what we are doing when there is clearly a war theatre in Timaru and Moskau. One would have thought that when the Vaadians sent their general to the conference in Timaru that they would have been able to connect the dots and know that we intend to and are attacking Timaru and Moskau and not Ilek-Vaad. Perhaps the vaunted educational levels in Ilek-Vaad are over-rated.”

A pause, and then the tone became more menancing.

“As for your lands becoming ravaged, you should know that Vrak is deploying its troops to defend your lands against Timaru and Moskau. Vrak will also defend your lands against encroachments from any outsider, including Ilek-Vaad. We have learned that the Vaadian Defence Minister Issem, a most emotional man given to schoolyard bullying instead of acting like a civilized being, stated to our Ambassador that they, and I quote, ‘the Republican Council has voted unanimously to give Mandate to the Supreme Republican Commander. He has been asked to secure the borders of the Free Republic by any means as he sees fit.’ Well, coming from a nation that seeks to extend its influence in the Klatch through its so-called “foreign guard” bases, we find it quite ironic that they need to secure their borders. I’m sure that they will use this as a pretext to launch a pre-emptive attack at our troops either stationed in your state, key of Karmanyaka, or our troops based in either the former New Shiron territories or Vrak itself. Or, I daresay any other Klatchian state that they feel may threaten their borders. Know this; Vrak does not intend war with Ilek-Vaad, but we will not be idle if they seek to cross into any Klatchian state or violate the borders of the Klatch. We also would like to know what the state of Karmanyaka intends to do in order to squash the rebellion in Timaru and Moskau. The Klatch is not your enemy, key of Karmanyaka, but Timaru and Moskau is, and, quite possibly so is Ilek-Vaad. Tell me, what is stopping Ilek-Vaad from attacking you? Nothing now according to their ‘mandate’.”

The Vrakian key sat, waiting for a response.

The results of the meeting with Ambassador Hagwonak and Minister Issem were also made known to the Klatchian Privy Council.

OOC: Apparently a male walrus can grow 14,5 - 15 ft long, lying down. When he raises himself on his flippers he should (according to some image study) rise to 5 ft with a little effort. If the Vrakian walrus is larger than the real deal, perhaps he can keep his eyes level with a man's.

The Karmanyakan key rose again, gulping down water and loosening his tie. Realizing his initial nervousness had been misinterpreted for anger he took up the flattering tone.

"I am sure that the Glorious Kingdom strives to act for the best of the Klatch. It is therefore sad if my Vrakian colleague interpreted my statement differently than intended.

"Indeed, Karmanyaka is grateful for the protection Vrak offers her against the ravenous armies of Timaru and Moskau. Yet, it must be clear even to you that the Vaadians are feeling intimidated by your presence. Though this threat is evidently very exaggerated, the Vaadians nevertheless see it as enough cause to launch an attack force into Karmanyaka, aimed at destroying the imagined Vrakian threat.

"Karmanyakan proximity to Ilek-Vaad calls for our cooperation with the Vaadians and we wish for no animosity with the Free Republic. And we will not shun the friendship of the Glorious Kingdom either. You recognize our position, I take it.

"Seeing as Karmanyaka finds itself under considerable pressure from two ways, we therefore urge that the Vrakian forces proceed with speed through Karmanyaka and out across the border to Timaru and Moskau. We will also do our utmost to stop the Vaadians from attacking, of course. We merely wish that you will not worsen the situation. Thank you.

In Tollan , Ambassador from Karmanyaka Igor Moulin was immediately connected to Command General Lucane.

"This is Command General Lucane, Ambassador Moulin. The Supreme Republican Commander is very busy, and has assigned me to deal with any diplomatic 'complexities' that have arisen from the current situation. How may I help you?"

Lucane sounded exceedingly calm, as usual, the gravity of the situation seemed entirely lost upon the members of Retaliatory Guard Command, but then again the situation was nothing new to them.

OOC: I'll take a liberty myself then, Vrak ;)

IC:

As Ambassador Hagwonak and his staff prepared to leave after their dismantling of the embassy the Ambassador would be entirely shocked to see Sir Alec Connover, Minister of Foreign Affairs, waiting by the gate as the Ambassador and his party made their way out. The quiet street, King's Parade, was as usual stil, in the early afternoon.

Sir Alec smiled and bowed as the Ambassador and his staff passed by. "I was hoping you wouldn't leave Ambassador, the Free Republic never expels Ambassadors, or violates embassies, no matter how dire the situation.

The Federation has deprived the Free Republic of eyes and ears in Port Olympus, it's only going to make things worse if you lads leave."

Sir Alec paused and reached into his jacket and withdrew a pair of cigars and offered one to the Ambassador.

"Now, why don't we sit down and go over our options here. With the Military Mandate in place, I can't officially do anything, but I think you could use an informal advisor. After all , only a small minority of Military Mandates actually result in any fighting."

He paused and lit his cigar. The duality of Vaadian politics and personality once again moved like a hydra, with it heads each moving apparently in ignorance of the others.

Ambassador Moulin sighed, relieved to finally speak to someone after having spent half an hour listening to the Lassic Philharmonic Orchestra interpreting some famous piece of opera.

"At last!" he murmured barely audible. "Command General! I'm pleased to speak to you. As you probably realize I am calling about the 'complexities' regarding the Vaadian military build-up in the Lumpen Republic, or as you would put it, the Vrakian military build-up in Karmanyaka.

"You must also realize that Karmanyaka finds itself under considerable pressure as the tension between Vrak and Ilek-Vaad mounts. Karmanyaka is prepared to vouch for the continued respect of Vaadian integrity. That is, we guarantee that no attack on Vaadian territory will be staged from within Karmanyakan borders. Indeed, the Vrakian military presence is concentrated to the western parts of Karmanyaka with several days of marching separating them from the borders of the Free Republic.

Bearing these circumstances in mind, we must ask for a clear guarantee that the Retaliatory Guard does not intend a preemptive strike on Vrakian forces temporarily stationed in Karmanyaka. After all, Karmanyaka has welcomed Vrak, a Klatchian ally and member of the FKC, into our country in order to secure Klatchian territory against incursions from the north.

"Furthermore, the Glorious Kingdom has assured us that they have no intentions whatsoever of attacking the Free Republic of Ilek-Vaad, unless Klatchian territory is violated. We have no reason to doubt the truthfulness of this promise. As should neither the Retaliatory Guard.

"The consequences of an armed conflict would undoubtedly be devastating to both Ilek-Vaad and Karmanyaka as well as large portions of the rest of Klatchia. We must unite in our efforts to avoid such a scenario.

The ambassador spoke with a vivid tone and didn't even seem to breath between the words.

"Finally, Command General, I would like to express my hope that Karmanyaka will always find a friend and ally in the Free Republic! Mutually, of course.

The Parliament, Port Olympus

The sweaty Karmanyakan Key sat down and took a note from an assistant and read it briefly before standing to give the Vrakian a response to his question of Karmanyakan intervention in Timaru and Moskau.

"Karmanyaka has already stationed forces on the northern border, protecting the Klatchian border to Timaru and Moskau. However, Karmanyakan forces will not be sent to Timaru and Moskau under Karmanyakan flag. If JDF Command orders Karmanyakan JDF forces in, then that will be another matter, as of now, no such orders have been recieved. The Democratic Dominion has always been ready to protect Klatchian interests and territory against foreign aggression and will not hesitate in this matter either.

Thank you."

The Vrakian key rose once again to address the assembly.

“We are pleased to hear that Karmanyaka strives for peace even during this difficult time. As well, we are glad to hear that Karmanyaka is ready, ah…”

A pause as if reading from a transcript.

“…’to protect Klatchian interests and territory aggression and will not hesitate in this matter either.’ Well, that is rather pleasing to hear. Vrak always has and I daresay always will place the Klatch first and has made that clear to its other allies and friends. Thus, we are in agreement that if Ilek-Vaad crosses the borders of the Klatch then it is they who are at fault. Key of Karmanyaka, you have nothing to fear since unlike the Vaadians who believe that their ‘mandate’ gives them freedom to do as they wish, we respect their borders unless they show disrespect to the borders of the Klatch. Now, it would be good to hear from our interim president on this matter, or at least a designate from the Privy Council? I trust that their wisdom will guide us in this time. May Bok be with us.”

The key sat down, delivering the last phrase as though he were at a temple or other such holy place and not in Parliament.

====

The Ambassador paused to consider his options. Finally after a significant wait he spoke.

“When we were called ‘liars’ and ‘scoundrels’ by Minister Issem, that was an insult to the Vrakian people and to our liege. It is something we do not take lightly. I have my orders to vacate the premises and to report back to the capital. If you wish to contact us, then you may contact the Ministry of Rites directly. Our embassy is closed and all Vrakians living in Ilek-Vaad have been made aware to leave your country. This is the course that your nation has chosen, Sir Alec. I hope it was a good one. Good day.”

With that, the walrus waddled into his waiting limousine and left.

====

The High General’s eyes widened at the mention of Himmler and even more when the Var called him an elf. Luckily the speakerphone did not have visual capabilities else the Var would see a very angry Intelligence director gesturing furiously to an aide to find out all they know of Himmler and elves. The only elves that Vrak was aware of were the primitives on the Gonad.

“Of course, Warleader Karlord Dec'nar. I shall meet you in Port Olympus myself. We do have much to discuss.”

Western Timaru and Moskau

Colonel Jui-Ru Tek of the 101 Man-gunin ordered his troops to roll. Helicopter gunships would sweep ahead to locate the rebels, attempting to match the satellite images and UAV sweeps with the real terrain. And the terrain was a problem since although the Vrakians were adept at fighting in cold weather, they did not have the home field advantage.

Mechanized infantry in their IFVs along with full tank support began to move east. The rocket artillery rumbled behind, but ready to launch their payloads. They still could not see the Var but likely would in a short while. As well, unconfirmed reports of a biological/chemical attack came down from command so each soldier was suited up appropriately.

Command General Lucane sounded non-committal.

"I am afraid Ambassador that at this point I can assure you nothing. The actions of the Vrakians have made it quite clear that they cannot be trusted by the Free Republic. Their track record for honesty, while exemplary in the beginning, has tailed off. Their eagerness to send warplanes and warships to threaten Vaadian forces shows us that they clearly pose a threat to the Free Republic.

I would like to assure you that Retaliatory Guard Command has assessed the damage an armed conflict would cause would be minimal. Our estimates give the Vrakian armed forces a 'Mild' threat rating. Should action be required, Karmanyaka would be secured within seven days and fighting would be minimal."

Command General Lucane sounded completely confident in his statements and continued.

"However, the current tensions are once again caused by a Federation States deployment of forces in the Free Republics baclyard, with not so much as a heads up, or an initial consultation. We have had absolutely no contact from the Glorious Kingdom, nor do we expect any.

To diffuse the situation would be a simple. First we would like a full consultation on the military buildup on nations that border us, or that lie within striking distance of us, i.e. Karmnayaka and the DBAT. Second, we would like to have Retaliatory Guard Command staff stationed in Karmanyaka to monitor Vrakian troop movements, to asses well in advance if they do indeed pose a threat or not and to make sure that they do make any sudden rush to fortify positions against the Free Republic.

These two small steps, steps that good neighbors should have taken from the beginning, will greatly reduce the chances of any armed conflict."

OOC: My post originally read "the Vrakian military presence is concentrated to the eastern parts of Karmanyaka". That should have been western! My big bad!

Ambassador Moulin shrugged and rested switched on his phone's handsfree function to release the pain in his right elbow.

"Command General, it seems this whole affair has been caused by an unfortunate series of misunderstandings. The Karmanyakan government assumed that Vrak would inform you of this movement of forces. On the other hand it seems the Vrakians didn't expect you to call north-western Karmanyaka, more than 3000 kilometers from the Vaadian border, 'your backyard'."

"I'm afraid your 'simple' solution isn't at all that. Much of the information you ask for is classified for obvious strategic reasons. The Karmanyakan government is not at liberty to tell you much about other states' troop deployments in the vicinity of Ilek-Vaad or anywhere. However, I will do what I can to keep you updated on these things.

"Then again, I am sure that you are reasonably well-informed about these Vrakian troop movements, since they take place quite openly. I will not be fooled to believe that the Free Republic does not use 'intelligence' personnel to observe military movements in Karmanyaka, or the rest of the Klatch for that matter.

"What I can tell you for the moment though, is that Vrakian infantry, tanks and artillery are being shipped together with materials, from Astridburg and Steamfiord, by train, to the cities of Koppertahl and Grotton in north-eastern Karmanyaka. From there they are moving through the Areanne pass and into the Dyelli Beybi Arctic Territories. We have speeded up the transit through Karmanyaka and you can rest assured that no Vrakian forces are stationed anywhere east of the city of Orva.

I'll keep you posted if this situation changes."

IC:

Command General Lucane nodded as he listened and then replied.

"The Free Republic and the Retaliatory Guard most certainly DO NOT maintain intelligence personnel in other sovereign nations. We do have satellite imagery that has kept us abreast of Vrakian movements, but the whole affair is entirely mystifying. The easiest and fastest way to reach the DBAT would be through the territory of the Vrakian ally that they are supporting, the LOW and then by sea, or even by air or sea from Vrak directly to the DBAT.

The Glorious Kingdom is incurring extra expense, and time, both bad for military expeditions , by sending their troops on an extra long and onerous trip to and then through your nation. This is entirely suspicious, especially since they will meet more opposition through this route as Dyellian forces were previously re-inforcing the area.

This deployment makes no sense militarily. Either the Vrakian military is plagued by poor planning, or they have other reasons for this deployment. The other reasons are what we intend to guard against. As for your western border being our 'backyard' I will simply point out that it is still an area that could potentially be used to stage strikes at the Free Republic. Airbases there could make Vrakian bombers a real and immediate threat, and would give Vrakian forces a huge Karmanyakan civilian and military buffer if they did choose to strike. Their choice of area for deployment makes more sense as a rear base for striking further East, while it is only a nominally good route to move forces North, for reasons stated previously and simply because mountain passes are perfect places for ambushes, once again the Vrakians have made a poor strategic choice if we take their intentions at face value.

Without any contact from the Glorious Kingdom, and without our own assessors on the ground to see what is happening, I am afraid that we will have to consider the possiblilty of hostile action and remain on alert and deployed. I can assure you that any information that is top secret would not be released to anyone by Retaliatory Guard Command. The sheer size of the Vrakian deployment makes sure that it is probably the poorest kept secret in the Klatch."

The secretive high command of the Vrakian military never left their ultra-secure military headquarters located, well, somewhere in Vrak. Some believed that it was in Vrak Prime itself while others believed that it was located in the nearby massive mountains dubbed the King’s Range. Still others thought that likely there was more than one High General, much like doppelgangers while others thought that the High General did not exist at all and that all the so-called personages were merely an extension of the King himself or, more ominously, a super advanced computer. Still, conspiracy theories abounded and the Vrakian High Command liked to keep the myth perpetuated and the public confused.

From a non-descript military airbase, a sleek black hypersonic transport roared into the atmosphere. It really was overkill since the distance was short and likely the craft would not reach its top speed. Still, the Vrakians did sometimes have a flair for the dramatic and as it neared Port Olympus, it sent out a special cycle of IFF codes, alerting the air traffic control of a most special passenger about to land.

====

Colonel Tek wasn’t keen on not picking up any of the Timarians or Moskuans, or whatever they called themselves. He cursed to himself as to why some territory would name themselves after two cities. Why not a brief yet powerful name such as Vrak? He shook his great head to the driver in his personal armoured car as the Man-gunin rolled inexorably towards the western border of that irritating territory. So far, the patrols have picked up nothing unusual and while the helicopter gunships made visual contact with the Var gravships, they were ordered to transmit standard JDF and Vrak IFF codes and then give them plenty of room. The colonel was hoping more intelligence was forthcoming and silently contemplated the railway that the Vrakians were constructing from the North Sea to the airbases. It would be a quick job but it should be adequate for the task. Besides, the real brunt of attack would come from Karmanyaka, unless the Vaadians decided to launch an attack. That would tie down the troops there and also nearly the one third of the entirety of the Vrakian military in the former New Shiron territory. Hardly leaving Vrak defenseless, for Vrak did not even call upon its reserves nor even begin conscription. At the moment, the Vrakians were using their peacekeeping strength to squelch this rebellion.

He grunted at the display. No activity yet. A detailed map of the terrain would come shortly, but he was looking for the best avenue of approach so as to capture the nearest city.

-What of this beam? As far as we can tell, it does not resemble a tightbeam that we have noticed amongst our allies. Nor is it anything from the Dozle war.
-We cannot track it since it beyond our deep space capabilities. Pass this information along to LOW and New Shiron. Their equipment in this matter is far more advanced than ours and we don’t have time to ask our already taxed allies. Sketch is pre-occupied with Mercury while Clairmont is still under siege. No, we cannot ask them for help at this juncture. Besides, this is a Klatchian matter.
-Very well. Still, our satellites will try to intercept the beam if possible and them possibly we can understand it. It is a remote chance, but it is something.

"Of course, I can't comment on the tactical details of the Vrakian deployment, since I'm no military man myself." Moulin admitted reluctantly. "However, I gather that the DBAT rebels have been all but annihalated in the western territory and that the Vrakians plan to surround them on two fronts, with the LOW in the west. Besides, Karmanyaka offers the quickest way to get close to the DBAT border, since much of the infrastructure in areas adjacent to the Arctic territories is in terrible condition." He paused to wave away a clerk with a stack of papers, ending up spreading all the papers on the floor.

"Karmanyaka recognizes the need for the Free Republic to defend itself against aggressors, but I doubt that the Glorious Kingdom is such an aggressor. We therefore consider it our duty to the people of the Klatch in general and Karmanyaka in particular, to hinder any confrontation between Vrak and Ilek-Vaad. As I said, we will try to keep you informed of the progress in the campaign against Timaru and Moskau, and if your nation should be attacked, we will not deny you your right to defensive action... Of course, if your forces should attack Vrak unprovoked, then we will have an entirely different situation. Let's just hope we won't have to consider that.

"Finally I'd like to press that no-one regrets the turn of events that have led us here, more than we do. It would certainly be desirable to arrange for some sort of cooperative military effort with mutual observers to coordinate military movements within the JDF states and the Free Republic, so that misunderstandings... such as this might be avoided in the future."

Ambassador Moulin thought for himself that the day the FKC and Ilek-Vaad stopped being so damn secretive and started to recognize the need for military coordination, might coincide fairly well with the first blizzards in Hell.

In Katla and the other major cities in Karmanyaka, people were taking to the streets to show their dislike. It was sometimes unclear what it was the people didn't like, but the protests seemed mostly aimed at shop windows, cars and the police. Policemen in riot gear tried to control the angry mobs, and the battles left piles of smoldering tires and broken glass everywhere.

The few people who actually stated the cause of the protests blamed the government and the FKC. The so-called 'activists' were pushing for a secession from the FKC and a withdrawal of the "fascist pawns of that rabid ferret, from the soil of our motherland!" as one angry passer-by put it. In other words, many Karmanyakan viewed the Vrakian troops as puppets of the President of the FKC.

In truth, Karmanyakan television and newspapers had adopted the opinion that the indecision of the FKC and the endless bickering of its member states were to blame for rising crime levels, a stagnant economy and the development of several regional crisis. The governing Dominion Party were losing its grip on the nation and some people were even talking of going back to the days before democracy was introduced to Karmanyaka. Many senior citizens liked to remember the days of the ruling aristocracy as the "golden years", a time of ceremony and tradition when ancient customs mattered and talking animals only appeared in fairy tales.

Indeed, even intellectual Karmanyakans murmured against the federation, pointing out serious flaws and constraints in the constitution. The lack of affinity with the rest of the federation, both politically and culturally was noted. Popular authors and political debaters claimed that Prime Minister Pommer and the Tengil, Johan Kader, had lost touch with the common man and that their Pro-Klatchian standpoint didn't reflect the will of the people. Karmanyaka found itself in another crisis.

OOC: Just a quickie post…

IC:

The Vrakians were unperturbed with the reaction of the ordinary Karmanyakan citizenry. Some even snorted when they saw some of the effects of the riots. After all, didn’t these fools realize that they will be spilling their blood for them? Luckily, most of the military traffic was diverted away from such incidents and the forces were being marshaled westward of Orva as well as Grotton and Koppertahl. A few of the intelligence officers did quietly note the unrest and filed their usual duty reports that would make it back to VIS HQ.

As well, while it was obvious that tanks and artillery pieces were being transported, what was not so obvious were the enclosed railcars with only ventilation shafts being visible. A keen eye would note that this was not for infantry since the troops rode in passenger cars.

Still, anyone that drew too close to the military trains and somehow managed to breach the Karmanyaka escorts would be greeted by armed grim-faced Vrakians that would point with their weapons first, clearly indicating that one should move on and look the other way.

Command General Lucane smiled "Ambassador, I would like nothing better than to have some sort of agreement with the Federation and the JDF to avoid these situations. You may recall that such an agreement was included in the Draft Proposal for diplomatic relations that the Free Republic offered to the Federation, which was never even voted on by parliament, in fact parliament and the Federation have pointedly refused to even meet with our representatives, and this was before any of the current dificulties.

If you have a way to rectify this, I would be most pleased to explore such an avenue."

Meanwhile in Karmanyaka, the 'Organizers' of the Coventry Institute for Democracy that had helped fledgling political parties get organized and funded, now did their best to urge their Karmanyakan friends to refrain from violence, but to get their message out peacefully.

In fact the chief Organizer, The Right and Hounourable Theta Melin attempted to contact all parties in an effort to get them to sit down and discuss things in a mediated forum.

At the edge of the Sol System, a pin-prick of light appeared, then expanded quickly, then receeded to nothing with flash. In it's place Fleet Control Group-I (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8084180&postcount=9) quickly powered back up as the jump field dissapated from the central Voltaug Warship (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8470881&postcount=10). FCG-I also has an additional Idvar Heavy Cruiser (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8941870&postcount=12), which was acting as it's command ship.

Aboard the Idvar, it's graceful Construct bent over with a bow before the ship's commander.

"We have arrived at the edge of the Sol System. At curent speed we will be in orbit of Terra in two days." It droned in a cool metallic voice.

"Very good, contact Ambassador X-D in the Free Republic and hail Colonel Seleucas aboard the Phyrrhic I and give him our ETA." Stated the young woamn in command, her voice was not terribly deep, but it resonated like thunder, causing the Thilite Crew to cringe.

She paused and adjusted her thick goggles, and looked over to Idvar "Establish a connection with the Lagpunkt, I want my father to know that we have arrived."

Idvar bowed low again "As the Duaghter of the Dragon commands, I will do." The constuct then glided off to carry out her orders.

FCG-I began bearing don on Terra.

Something very odd was going on in space. There was that little satellite sitting in deep space... presumably doing something. Perhaps more interesting were the huge energy fluctuations nearby. Something was going on in the space near the satellite, although there was no sign of anything in that space.

The Navigators vessel might pick it up, although nothing on Earth itself would...

The Idvar indeed had noticed the Satellite. The Idvar scanned the object intently, and then reported back to The Daughter of the Dragon. It's construct glided back up to the command chair.

"Your excellency, the uplink with the Lagpunkt will be completed momentarily. I have also detected the anamolous signal that Colonel Seleucus warned us about. I have detected the object transmitting it." The Construct looked over to screen as a visual of the object came up. "I am scanning it now."

The CFG slowed in order to observe the object more closely.

Idalus, Daughter of the Dragon leaned forward and looked at the screen.

"It looks like a satellite, is it a beacon?"

Colonel Seleucus breathed a sigh of relief as the Idvar contacted Pyrrhus I. He had half expected the LOW forces to destroy Pyrrhus I when he initially powered it up, he wasn't sure he could've stopped it either, him and his crew had only fired one of it's weapons once and the OAV's in the hangars were to few to do anything to stop the LOW forces.

"I am sure glad that you are here" he replied "I will advise Retaliatory Guard Command."

He then relayed the arrival of the Commonwealth forces to Tollan.

The satellite was not terran in origin, although it did a good job to look it. There were life forms onboard, although it was unsealed and existed in the vacuum of space.

It was using over 99% of the energy it was precieving to project something into space. It was beaming some of the energy off in short beams that ended abruptly as if impacting on something. It probably wouldn't take long for someone to realise what it was doing, it was nothing good...

Idalus Daughter of the Dragon, looked over the scan results quickly and turned to the Idvar construct , issueing orders.

"Send the Voltaug and it's Drones ahead of us to Terra. Find out what the probe is discharging it's enery at and then scan it's defences and see if we can destroy it. Have the Dyan XD cruisers spectrally mask and stand by."

The Idvar responded cooly "By your command. My Spatial Distortion cannon would make quick work of the probe, I believe."

Idalus nodded and waited for further information as the her orders were carried out.

"We shall see if that is necessary."

As it turned out the sattelite was in fact a giant cloaking device, claking a large quadrant of space from all manners of scanner. Something was out there... although certainly not visible to the naked eye. The only way to really discover what it was would be to deactivate the sattelite...

The Idvar fed the information it was gathering up to the main screen, quicly showing a graphic of just what the satellite was doing and how large an areea was being spectrally masked.

"Until it is deactivated, we have no way of knowing what exactly it is hiding." Intoned the Idvar.

Idalus, Daughter of the Dragon, nodded "Power ther Distortion cannon and destroy it."

Commonwealth forces rarely made attempts to contact anyone or anything that they considered a 'threat' or even mildly annoying for that matter, the Idvar did as commanded and powered up it's main weapon, it's spatial distortion cannon. The massive charge fromn the cannon would literally cause the fabric of space to ripple, unleashing a powerful gravitic anomolythat would shatter objects within the area affected, that area was now the satellite. The Spatial Disruption Cannon was charged within minutes.

"Fire at will." Idalus commanded the Idvar as she stood to watch the monitor for the satellites reaction.

The Idvar fired.

The sattelite shattered quite satisfactorily, although there would probably have been better ways to do things... almost immediately scanners would begin to pick up ships, hundreds of ships. Moments later as the energy they were being fed dried up, they began to shut off the rather complicated projections of outside space they had been layering across their hulls, and one by one appear.

They were all more or less the same. Round central hull, with a slowly rotating disc that was cut away at one end on the outside. They were warships, the top and bottom of the dones bristling with energy and missile weapons. The disks were perhaps around 800 metres in diameter. There was a certain implication that these were not the kind of people one wanted to annoy...

A brief hail was sent to the Commonwealth ship. It was short, to the point and got the general message across; "You will be exterminated"

Idalus, Daughter of the Dragon, smiled. She had hoped to face some challenge that would make her worthy in the eyes of The Autarch and her father, to be made a system Overgovernor along the lines of such Varangian Guards like Tyvim Davor and Lathed Kyrn. She looked over the screen as the Thilite Crew looked back tentatively at her.

"Idvar, what odds did Tyvim Davor face against The Patriarchs of the Kinnick System and the Trade Alliance?" she asked

Idvar responded smoothly " In his final engagement at Kinnick Prime he faced ship to ship odds of nearly one hundred to one."

Idalus nodded "How did he compensate?"

Idvar responded again "He used his full compliment of Huscarls and targetted ships that appeared to be in command, while fighting a delaying action from his Voltaug, ordering his Dyan-XD Cruisers to use hit and run tactics utilizaing their spectral masking shields."

Idalus nodded "Deploy the Huscarls, order the Dyan-XD Cruisers to begin a flanking maneuver, and to hold off on attack until they are fully behind the enemy and I give the command, hail the aliens."

Idvar passed along the orders. The aliens would see the single ship, the Idvar standing firm, making no movement. The ten Dyan-XD Cruisers had previously cloaked and moved to get behind the large formation. Deep in the Idvar twenty Navigator Huscarls prepared to deploy, these were true Navigators, the enigmatic alien beings sealed in their near indestructable armour, and able to bend space around themselves, the masters that terrorized and controlled a nice chunk of the Milky Ways outer rim.

Idalus smiled as Idvar hailed the aliens and addressed them "Attacking a Fleet Control Group of The Autarch , would be, most unwise. Explain your presence, or I will not hesitate to attack." Idalus was blistering for a fight, and like most Varangians, the lives of those fighting for her meant less than nothing, compared to her glory.

Meanwhile The Voltaug and it's drones continued on to Terra, watching the situation as they pressed on.

Whoever or whatever was onboard the somewhat larger ship in the centre apparently saw no need to explain their prescence. The ships began to fan out in all directions, moving into a formation that vaguely resembled a hollow globe that had been sliced in half.

They were dropping what looked to be fighters as well, small cone like vessels that slipped out from the rotating discs on the outside. Each ship held perhaps 20 of the little vessels. There were probably around 200 ships, meaning they would have close to 4000 fighters and God alone knew what else was onboard.

They were closing, the huge cup-like formation closing on the enemy Capital vessel with dread, robotic certainty. A squadron of perhaps 500 of the fighter-like vessels detached itself from the main Fleet, veering away to provide cover from any flanking force.

The Armada in space that had just been uncovered had been aimed at the Dyellian space station which more or less did nothing., but which would prove to be a very good forward post for the Invasion that was planned...
The Navigators

The Commonwealth Guild of Engineers had always been mystified by the use of fighter ships, after all the Disruptor Field generated by their ships gave a protective 'white' around the 'yolk' of the ship, some three thousand yards deep , any fighter would have to be close to the ship to penetrate it's Viridian armor, and the field would tear it to pieces before it could close, same with missles, neither were used by The Navigators, they had dismissed their usefulness several hundred centuries ago.

The Idvar sat and made no move to escape, but simply began firing it's distortion cannon, aiming for gaps between the enemy armada, the distortion cannon was an area effect weapon, and if fired at the right spot could hit several ships at once, fighter craft caught by it would be crushed to atoms, capital ships would be in for a rough ride.

Idalus, Daughter of The Dragon, watched the ships coming into attack "My victory shall surpass Tyvim Davor's!" She says with obvious excitement.

The Idvar simply nods "Provided you do not underestimate these foes. If the Huscarl's cannot penetrate their defences, it will be flee, or be destroyed."

Idalus looked a bit angry, like an impetuous child "Nonsense. Deploy the Huscarls and prepare to fire a full spread of Anti-matter torpedos when the enemy are inside the effective range of the distortion cannon, and power up the main ion batteries."

The Idvar nodded silently. He ws programmed to be pragmatic, but to never refuse a Varangians order.

Deep within the Idvars hull there was a flash as the Huscarls disappeared, to reappear seconds later in space, spread out in pairs, just hanging there. The enemy, may notice the tiny flashes caused by their arrival, but no one generally scans for a single human sized life forms just drifting in space especually during a ship to ship battle. Their manipulations of dark matter would also yield no energy signature.

The Huscarls waited silently, in front of and above the avancing enemy, carefully monitoring the enemy for communication patterns and energy flow aboard the enemy ships, pinpointing command areas and power generation areas. Their attacks would be surgical.

The Dyan-XD Cruisers continued their careful circling maneuver, positioning themselves well behind the advancing enemy.

The Varangians were convinced of their own indestructability, and woese yet, their crews of Thilites were also convinced of it.

Scanning the odd craft would reveal they existed in a vacuum. There was no onboard atmosphere. A huge generator dominated the central orb. Life forms were mostly in the ring. Weapons lay mounted on the central orb as well as some manner of energy shield generator.

The enormous Wing of Fighter like Craft was bearing down on the cruisers, breaking off and arround to attack from all angles at once. It was a precise, almost computerised manouvre...

The main ships may not have been scanning for human sized objects, but the cloud of fighters still accompanying them was. An object that size could be damaging in a collision. At the moment the Huskarls ere not being treated as hostile though, rather more or less ignored.

Soon the ships would employ their laser turrets... they would target bridge and engines as primary points of attack, oddly enough more or less ignoring weapons systems... for now.

The Idvar finally gave signs of moving as the alien vessels moved in, backing away, to keep the aliens at range of the spatial distortion cannon, which fired regularly, causing large sections of space to swirl and buckle like powerful whirlpools. Idvar closed the blast shields around the bridge as the enemy began firing lasers, which seemed to be much more effective in penetrating the disruption field around the Idvar than were the missiles, and appeared to be striking and damaging the Idvar's skin, though not in any critical manner as of yet.

As the aliens closed they were suddenly sprayed by the Idvar's anti-matter torpedo arrays, fighters or vessels that managed to get to close were blasted with plasma point defence cannons.

The Dyan Cruisers ignored the closing fighters and accelerated to close in on the larger ships, the fighters that managed to penetrate the disruption fields would then have to survive the point defence cannons, the cruisers rush in to attack the aliens, fire spreads of antimatter torpedos, and bring their main ion batteries to bear when they are in range, the Dyan cruisers are much faster than the Idvar, and that coupled with their spectral masking fields, make them enourmously hard to target, though lasers that did hit them had obvious detrimental effects.

The Navigator Huskarls simply hang in space, watching, collecting information, planning for strike, if they need to do so.

Onboard the Idvar, Idalus , Daughter of the Dragon, frowned as the blast shields closed, she looked over to the crystal screens to watch the action since the live view was now obscured. Idvar calmly asessed the situation.

"We have hull breaches in sections eight and fourteen, and in engineering. Damage to equipment is negligible and casualties are insignifigant. They are targetting my engines and control systems." His smooth voice intoned.

Idalus simply nodded "Continue the attack, have we identified the enemies weak points?"

Idvar responded "The Huskarls believe they have pinpointed the enemies power plants, they are working out an attack pattern, and will test it at your command."

Idalus nodded again as the bridge shook as it was buffeted by laser fire "Have them standby, let us see what sort of damage we are inflicting first."

Whoever the alien race were, they seemed to have very strong shields, even so two vessels suffered hull breaches... which resulted in comparatively little damage as the vessels it seemed existed in vaccum with no air supply.

A few of the vessels further back in the formation diverted lasers to act as point defence, clearing away the missiles, in the same way their enemy's point defence was doing so...

The tactic was the same, keep shooting at the engines.

The huge flotilla of fighters miled around, more or less just acting as a distraction for the flanking force... Were they scanning for human sized objects. They'd note human sized metallic objects jetting away from the wreckage of downed fighters...

The battle was moving along insufficently for Idalus.

"Order the Cruisers to close and use their main ion batteries to punch through the enemies shields , then fire anti-matter torpedos at point blank range!"

It was a maneuver often used by The Varangian Guard, the heavy ion batteries would tax the shields and the close proximity would give little time for point defence batteries precious little time to stop the torpedos. Of course it was dangerous and would cost greatly in Thilite lives, not that Idalus cared.

The Cruisers raced in closing range quicly each one focusing on a sperate ship and punding it with it's main ion batteries and then when the ships were dangerously close, firing a spread of half a dozen anti-matter torpedos at point blank range.
Dyelli Beybi
17-11-2006, 12:28
Damage against the shields was perceptible, but none seemed to be going down in a great hurry. A few ships turned their attention to the Cruisers, but by and large that was being left to the fighters. Every single ship seemed to be using the same tactic aim for engines and shield generators. One ship went down to the torpedo barage, it's belly splitting open and thousands of small human sized objects jetting away from the wreckage...

If the Nabigators hadn't realised already, the enemy, whoever they were, were planning to board and capture...
The Navigators
18-11-2006, 07:21
The Dyan Cruisers continued to concentrate on the main ships, the fighters seemed to have no effect on them. The Thilite Commanders ignored the small human sized objects, they did not even seem to consider the possibility of any boarding action.

Idalus continued to watch, and seeing what was going on struck upon a plan.

"Idvar, vent plasma from the ATMOS drives and shut them down, put all other systems on emergency power." She said with a smile.

The Idvar construct tilted it's head " I don't see....."

Idalus interrupted "They are attempting to disable and board you, vent the plasma, and shut down the ATMOS drives, they have no way of knowing that the resonance generator powers everything but the drives, they will assume they've disabled our power plants and move in to board. Let them, once they are onboard, open up point blank on their ships, and I will lead the Marines to anihilate the boarders." She paused, adjusting her goggles "I'll look at them, we will watch them melt!"

The Thilites on deck shuddered as Idvar nodded and 'smiled' "I see. Very good."

Idalus looked back at the battle screens "Oh and list a bit as you vent the plasma, make it look dramatic."

Idvar bobbed it's head "I shall do my best."

As one of the enemies heavy lasers rake at the Idvar's engines, there is an explosion and a huge plume of plasma, and one engine sputters and dies, followed soon by the other, the Idvar begins a slow, out of control spin, power readings drop drastically and it's guns and spatial distortion cannon die......................................

Idalus, daughter of The Dragon, smiles "Ready the Marines."

The fact that Idalus had not alerted the Dyan-XD Cruisers to her plan completed the ruse, the Cruisers almost immediately faltered, a pair of them even pealing away, in something certainly resembling uncertain flight.

All bar one of the ships did an immediate about turn to chase after the cruisers, using the exact same, blast through the shields then shoot out the engines/power supply method of combat.

The one that hadn't belched out a torpedo which shimmered towards a section of hull... presumably it was supposed to create a breach. The orbiting platform began to send out thousands of the small pod like objects which followed the same path as the torpedo. The ones scattered about space were begining to converge on the same point...

Idvar calculated the point of impact and cleared those sections of constructs, and alerted two hundred of the ships eight hundred and fifty Thilite Marines, who began a leisurely march to that section, intending to arrive well after the explosion. Idvar also alerted Idalus, Daughter of the Dragon, showing the point of impact on screen.

"They will breach the hull here, and are forming up to enter me en masse. Marines have been dispatched, and I am currently assembling ten Nightmare Weapons , should you need them."

Idalus nodded "Very good." she then ran down the hallway, and opened the elevator door, but didn't wait for an elevator, and instead leaped into the shaft, grabbing onto the door at the appropriate deck and shot down the hall towards the area that would be breached, moving fast enough that the Thiltes whose path she crossed saw only a blur.

Idvar braced for, and counted down to impact. "Five............Four...........Three............Two.............One......................"

Hu-man life-forms det-ect-ed

Anyone near the breach would hear the harsh metalic voice

There were thousands out there, swarming around the rent, ready to enter. A slim trickle of the pod like objects moved in. Anyone who saw the first one float effortlessly into the rent woud say it was a cylindrical shape with a rounded top. Three stalks extended from it, two from the belly and one from what seemed to be the turret. The cylinder tapered as it went up and was covered in round bulges.

OOC: FINALLY , I can post again.

IC:

There was no one near the breach and the Daleks found several computer terminals within easy reach, none of the connected to anything, all shut down.

Idvar waited until all the boarders were in and well into moving deeper into his superstructure and then quickly reactivated everything, the disruptor field came back up, Idvar righted himself and immediately, every ion cannon on the ship blasted the ship that had brought the boarders.

The Boarders would find that could only move in a few directions and every passage they took led to a main passage that led deeper into the ship, at a point, no other passages would even be available to them, and they would find the passage blocked, by a young woman, and a wall of heavily armed and armoured Thilite Marines.

Idalus had removed her goggles, ready to transfix her enemies with her gaze, the red glow from her eyes bathed the entire corridor, she saw that her enemies had no eyes.

"Right then, Fire!!" she yelled as she stepped towards the Daleks, her voice grew into a boom that literally shook the floors and walls, sending anything not securely attached to the superstructure bouncing and falling, the Thilite Marines opened up with their railguns at the order, the corridor was filled with depleted uranium darts traveling at just under the speed of light. The speed increased their mass a hundredfold, giving the effect of being slammed into by a luxury car traveling at near optic speeds. The shaped depleted uranium darts focused that energy at a pin point tip, giving it enormous penetrating power, and there was nowhere to take cover from them.

Behind the Daleks Idvar began closing his bulk-heads, sealing Daleks off from retreat and sealing those that had split up from each other off from the main group. He began assembling his Nightmare Weapons to finish them off.

Meanwhile , out in space the Dyan Cruisers seeing the Idvar jump back to life, suddenly turned on their pursuers with renewed ferocity.

Closer to Terra, the Voltaug had finally reached orbit and hailed the Vaadian Pyrrhic space station, and began setting up it's MOBAT drones in a defensive arc.

The funny moving boxes hadn't boarded very fast, in fact there were all of six of them that had managed to get onboard... the remainder jetted away as soon as the shields went up again.

... and there weren't any ships that had brought the boarders, although a few of the closer ones seemed to have taken damage... one belched off something which appeared to be a huge disk from the face of the ship, that floated slowly towards the Capital vessel.

Meanwhile the huge fleet was swarming over the cruisers, farting out torpedoes left right and centre and somehow managing to miss themselves while keeping the lasers very well trained...

Meanwhile onboard the ship the six little boxes advanced along the coridoor, taking stock of their surroundings in a quiet sort of way. The marines would be quick to discover that bullets, seemed to have about as much effect as thrown rocks... in fact they didn't even seem to be hitting the targets. They seemed to have some manner of outrageously powerful energy shield around them that was affording a quite unprecedented level of protection.

"HU-MAN LIFE FORMS DET-ECT-ED" one announced, with a unfailing quality to state the obvious.

"EXT-ER-MIN-ATE" another replied politely.

On the surface there were people who had the information to disable the creatures, specifically where to aim... but they weren't present on the ship when the front three let rip with a volley of energy bolts that seemed to have been designed to instantly overcook large marine mammals.

There were six against however many thousand, but they seemed to rate their chances.

Idvar monitored the situation closely, noting their inability to defeat the enemies shields. He decided to recall the Huscarl's and put them to work clearing his decks, while he signaled for the Dyan Cruisers to withdraw at speed and join the defensive position of the Voltaug at Terra, his voice boomed over the ships intercom where the Daleks were meeting the Thilite Marines and Idalus.

"I suggest that we withdraw, we are unable to defeat these aliens shield with conventional weapons. I am analyzing now and am quite certain that the Razer Cannons aboard the Voltaug will be much more effective against them."

As he said that the air before the Dalek's flashed, and they were confronted by The Navigator Huscarls. The true Navigators had a lot in common with the Daleks, biological being who had thousands upon thousands of years ago encased themselves in their indestructible armour and used their advanced technology to enslave other races. As the Huscarls appeared the eamiang Marines ran for it, the energy beams had made quick work of them and they had no illusions about being helpful and beat a hasty retreat. Idaslus simply answered Idvar.

"Right, get us out of here." She was irritated that she could attain a glorious victory and was a bit moody as she walked away leaving the Huscarls to deal with the boarders "I'm heading back to the bridge."

The Huscarls blocked the path of the Dalek's , tall humanoids in form with crested eyeless helmets, and mock human features carved into the lower half of the helmet to give them oursed lips and rounded chins. They waited to see what the Daleks would do.

Meanwhile the whole of the Fleet Control Group got underway, leaving behind injured and damaged, avoiding the dish launched at the Idvar and made for Terra at several thousand times the speed of light.
