The history of Atoranath

Before the state

The lands now under the empire of Atoranath were once a part of a grand union known as the Free Land of Cold Plains. The Free land started out as a loose coalition of the local Anior tribes, under the rule of a singular high-tech faction known as the Fannar. Details are sketchy at this point, but it is confirmed, that the Free Land soon joined a commonwealth of some sort. Several battles ending with stalemetes with various enemies later, the coalition’s fanaticism died down, however. Meanwhile, the leader of the Fannar, known today as The Guide, amassed great power to himself and his party, building up an authoritarian dictatorship. Civil unrest grew sporadically, with the people getting less and less involved in politics. The fact that the former war veterans were given only very little support also caused strife, for they were the most technologically savvy of the nations common citizens.

Soon, a civil war erupted. The destruction of several power plants threw the capitol into disarray, for without power, the heating systems faltered. People were forced to huddle together despite wearing thick pullovers and bear skins, for the name ‘Cold Plains’ was really a bit of an understatement.

The more barbaric members of the populace, the Gelati of the plains also overran the cities, revealing just how safe the country really was. They had been kept largely under control by a ‘special police force’, but with that now fighting the insurgencies in the main towns, the wild men were free to strike at their oppressors.

The death of the Guide, reportedly due to some sort of a mistreated blood disease, threw the Fannar into disarray. A last desperate plead of help from the allies of Atoranath ended up as a pointless exercise, for the countries that replied soon discovered how poorly equipped they were for the arctic climate they faced – even the most advanced tanks soon died down and entire platoons ended up with frostbites that resulted in amputation at best.

For a time, there was a period known as the Era of Chaos, when cities fell swiftly, culture and science declined and the last remnant of the once great state crumbled. Neighboring countries whose people could survive in the harsh weather bit huge chunks off the old land, yet even so they feared approaching the more savage areas.

The birth of a nation

At last, the conflicts died down. As people settled down, one of the more enterprising members of what was once the countries educated upper crust saw his chance. He had teamed up with a group of more civil Gelati and old army members and was looking for work of some sort. His chance came, when a village in the hospitable Atoran valley needed help with a tribe of barbarians. The group of entrepreneurs won and quickly settled in the valley, offering their services as its guards in exchange for a small amount of taxes from the villages within. As time went on, the influence of Nallak Sundan spread troughout the large valley, quite likely the largest hospitable part of what was once Northern Cold Plains.

Villages prospered under the protection of the fair master. Soon, Okkren and Essun grew into sizeable towns. When the protectorate enveloped another valley, Atareth, Nallak Vundan proclaimed that it would be time for the state to grow into a nation.

Just as another town was being built above the valley of Atoran, the country was heralded as the Empire of Atoranath. Many civil laws were made by Nallak Sundan to foster democracy and freedom. At the first election, he was a candidate for the first emperor. Emperor Sundan won by a landslide.

Smart usage of natural resources coupled with a greatly supported retail industry led to a stable economy and the UN accepted the new country as a fact. Some clever lobbywork by the Arch Ambassador of the empire ended with its inclusion in the democratic capitalist powerhouse that is Liberalia, ensuring that the other northern nations would not mistake their little neighbor for a soon-to-be extension of their own state.

To be continued as things progress and the nation ages...
