The Comets are a group of bandits frequently at conflict with the survivors at Talon Peak. Formed mainly by groups of outlaws and gangsters, they are led by a mysterious man known only as "the General." After the collapse of the national government, he styled himself as a military dictator, and governs as such. Any questioning of orders or governing is met with brutal punishments; being buried in cement, dragged behind a truck, or being sent out into the desert to die. They have various outposts in locations of the former American Southwest from which they conduct operations from, but are said to be headquartered at the former city of Amarillo, Texas.

The Comets as a whole number about 320,000 with about 60% of them in Amarillo. Around 85,000 are in the active militia, though the General will often try to gather as many able-bodied people as practical. The active militia is really just a measure of how many fully-equipped troops they are capable of fielding. Though many of the supplies the Comets possess were raided from former American military bases, there is always a problem making everything work. Aircraft that had been taken from the boneyard at Davis-Monthan are notoriously difficult to keep flying because of sheer age, and because of the lack of parts, existing planes are scavenged for spares, making the number of working planes dwindle all the time. Fuel for the planes is available from oilfields in Texas and Oklahoma, but is difficult to refine quickly, and more difficult to transport in sufficient quantity to make operations possible; a common phrase being that it‘s always "arriving tomorrow." Worse yet, because of the breakdown in communications and navigation, moving around means using maps, compasses, and human eyes. Planes occasionally fly off into nowhere after getting lost, never returning, which furthers the problem. Their ground vehicles are somewhat more reliable, the main limiting factor being ammunition and competent operators.
