As Darkness Falls

The Earth.

It's very structure has been turned upside down. The year is 2065, 40 years earlier a small comet smashed into the Southern ice caps and melted them, sea levels rose dramatically and the climate of the Earth was forever altered. Hidden under the ice caps was a huge deposit of hitherto unknown methane gas, this sudden release punched a huge hole in the ozone layer and as a result the Earth drastically overheated.

Despite the massive increase in sea levels the temperature rose dramatically, what land was left was turned mainly to desert. Only the North remained frozen and weather conditions were exacerbated here as well, Russia and the Baltic states were turned into a frozen wasteland all the year long. Governments fell and only the hardiest survived. There were survivors.

Monolithic conurbations, 'Mega-Cities' arose in survivable areas. Much like the petty city states of classical Greece, these cities are forever quarrelling and bicker over what resources are left. The Mega-Cities survive as fortified habitations in the midst of a wilderness. In this wilderness several warrior tribes have emerged. But more on these later.

Solar winds that have penetrated the huge southern ozone hole have shredded radar networks and frequently scramble aircraft instruments. Despite the poor state of communications, survivors are rumoured to be present in the Rocky Mountains in the US, which has become a snow capped fortress in the midst of a massive desert named Talon Peak. In the centre of China a rag-tag affiliation of Asiatic peoples have settled and founded The Haven. North in Russia, Frostfang has arozen out of the tundra, a massive fortress of ice and rock, peopled by the survivors of the Baltic states and Russia, they have taken up in increasing numbers a druidic religion and survive from day to day as best they can from the attacks of the Wind Runners, a collection of nomadic bandits that attack outpost held by Frostfang.

More are rumoured to have survived but who knows what state they are in?

The lands are in a state of constant conflict, outposts held by the Mega-Cities are frequently attacked by the numerous bandits and outrunners that attack any survivors of the Apocalypse.

Talon Peak's inhabitants have to contend with the Comets, a massive group of outrunners hell bent on plundering Talon Peak. The Haven has to defend itself from the Desert Dogs, who simply delight in combat without objective. The defenders of Frostfang in the meantime have to deal with constant threats from the aformentioned Wind Runners.

Who knows what lies ahead.

Ask to join here.

Then make a sort of News Thread for your civilisation and I shall post the link to it on this topic.

Notes: Science Geeks. I KNOW this is shoddy scientifically, don't pick me up on it.

You can all make your own settlements or take the part of the outrunner tribes. I have quite an extensive plotline for some of this so I'm sure I can accomodate you if you ask me :)

The Mega-Cities each hold around 450,000 people. Military hardware is limited, some civilisations have advantages in certain areas and I will moderate and allow advantages for your civilisations as long as they are balanced with disadvantages. The military tech level is not far advanced from modern day. And please don't say, 'BUT ITS SIXTY FIVE YEARS ON'. I realise that, this is just to stop people going, 'omg, my men have super body armour, your bullets don't go through them'. Also, sorry to nuclear buffs, all nuclear armament facilites were destroyed in the floods :p Nuclear energy is still around and very much in use, but the advanced communications needed to program a rocket carrying a warhead are scrambled by the 'solar winds'. lol.

Communications are awful, once you leave a Mega City, there is no way of contacting the city again. It is as if the air outside the Mega Cities have been hit by a giant chaff grenade. This also limits air travel as the instruments are cabbaged. The Mega Cities have internal comm facilities.

There won't be massive scale military action, more like skirmishes against the outrunners and then larger battles now and again, remember, even AMMUNITION is limited.

Nuclear technology has advanced enough for most vehicle engines and the citiy's to be safely powered by it so don't worry about energy. More likely you will be fighting about possesion of strategic territory, pride comes into it a lot with the survivors.

Ask to join and you can make up whatever civilisation of survivors you want, within reason :)

Can I make my own city state? I have a great idea for one. Plus, might I suggest creating a seperate forum for this little RP? Like an invisionsfree one, it would make it easier to keep track of everything pertaining to this game.

Erm, I would prefer to keep it on NS for the moment, but I'll create an events thread soon, just save the thread links etc. But yes Taledonia by all means create your own city state. Get a news thread up and running and I'll post the link here.

Same goes for you ControlDenied :)

He left, man. And I'm pretty sure this is going to be the OOC/Sign-Up page.

I think I'd like to play as the Comets.
Gintonpar
22-06-2006, 22:48
Indeed, this will be an OOC/Signup thread and then when you set something in action you make a new thread and I will add the link to the first post.

Taledonia that civilisation is fine, as its feasible that underwater settlements would have been constructed by the start date anyway and that the technology would be available.

Chevy Rocks you can play as the Comets, write up a page for them detailing backgrounds.

Sure you can join New Ireland, write up a civ and I'll check it out.

22-06-2006, 22:56
If its going to be a new thread for everything, then I strongly suggest making an offsite forum for this.
Gintonpar
22-06-2006, 23:00
Why? By linking the seperate threads by a central post on the first page all anyone needs is the link to the main RP thread and then they go to the first post and there are all the incidents, events and news threads.
Gintonpar
22-06-2006, 23:01
I'm not being argumentative for arguments sake but it would be very easy to manage the RP from this one thread by having a management post on the first page linking a reader to all the current incidents and events.
Taledonia
22-06-2006, 23:06
Yes, but it's annoying to other people as all these threads would clutter up I.I making it harder for them to find their RPs, plus it would be a bit annoying having to come here everytime to see if somebody made a post in a thread, whereas on a seperate forum it doesn't clutter up these boards, and we can know if anyone made a post because it will light up.

But it's your RP, twas just my humble suggestion.

Can I play as a nomadic group in the desert surrounding the Rockies?

Something along the lines of a group put together from some US and Canadian military units, and looking to consolidate power.

I have a few storylines ready to go. Basically the plan is, I have a few basic themes that you can attach your civilisation to, or not as the case may be.

This is just to get the ball rolling and then you can all diverge from the initial stories. Anyway, for one, I have been talking to a guy on telegram who has agreed to play an invention of mine, the Teklos.

These are an ancient group of nomads with ties to many of the great scientific minds in history and are the possesors of many weird and wonderful pieces of technology. The most important is the Stormcaller. This item holds great religious significance for the Druidic religion of Frostfang and has great overall military value. It gives the bearer the temporary opportunity to alter weather conditions to their advantage on a major scale. All of you selfish civilisations (:p) will naturally want this for the power it will bring to you but the Teklos have a more far reaching aim.

They are attempting to gather more components for the artefact from many of the major lost capitals of the world in order to ready the Stormcaller for full effect, which is ultimately to restore stability to the Earth's atmosphere. To do this, they must travel to London, which has become a vast swamp, Athens, which is now in the midst of a micro-desert, and North to frozen Moscow. In each of these cities there are components that are vital to the Teklos, the other civilisations do not know the purpose of the Teklos as it is a secret they guard jealously, as they seek to inherit the Earth as they weild the Stormcaller to its full effect. In the meantime, they are pursued by the other civilisations.

The Teklos, though very few in number, posess some decent technology. Their radio communications can go further than the mile that the other civilisations can manage so they do not constantly have to check in with a home base for directions as they can communicate on the fly. They also posess automated defence turrets that can slow pursuit, and their grenades are extremely powerful. Nevertheless, they are scientists and travellers before they are warriors. Though they do have the facility to hire mercenaries with their practically unlimited funds.

Hey, I liked the idea of The Haven, but I changed it's name to Steel Keep, hope you don't mind :p

Steel Keep

Steel Keep started as a large industrial plant under the hereditary ownership of the Steel Dynasty, an influential guild of metalworkers that was dominated by a series of succesful business families. Latterly, the guild has fallen under the control of the Scott family, which is in turn headed by its mysterious CEO, simply known as the Controller.

In the aftermath of the apocalypse, Steel Keep became a refuge for the displaced peoples of Central Asia and a number of European employees of the Steel Dynasty. In addition to this, a good number of Australian naval personnel who's fleet was displaced in the unpredictable weather following the comet, managed to find safety, along with much of their equipment, in Steel Keep.

Today, Steel Keep is a multi-layered metropolist, the richer folk dwell at the upper levels of the city, among trendy shopping malls and restaurants, while the numberless poor inhabit the ground level of the city, among the dozen or so nuclear power generators that keep the conurbation ticking over. They live adjacent to The Pit, a high tech prison hiding numerous dissenters against the regime of the Keep. Hundreds of guardsmen patrol the white walled complex that houses many vicious gang members and members of the notorious Desert Dog skirmishers alongside the dissenters. Remote controlled gun turrets flicker constantly over the surrounding area and The Pit really is a no go area.

Steel Keep has an overwhelmingly mechanical feel to it and relies heavily on technological advancements. It's military is predominantly armour based. It has a large proportion of armoured personnel carriers, fast attack vehicles and heavy armour, it's infantry are generally poor as they fight for a rather corrupt regime, but the armoured wing of the army makes it a force to be reckoned with.
