The position of the Emperor in the Japanese government has essentially been abolished. While the Emperor still does exist and is recognized by many Japanese, he no longer has any power within the government.
The National Diet, composed of two houses, the House of Representatives and the House of Councilors. They are the legislative branch of the government and solely responsible for lawmaking. The house of Councilors is made up of 480 elected representatives; The house of Representatives has 247 elected officials. Both houses have the same power except in some special circumstances where the House of Representatives decision precedes that of the House of Councilors.
The Executive power is rested in the Cabinet which consists of the Prime Minister and no more than 17 ministers of state. The Prime Minister is elected directly and serves a three year term. The Prime Minister appoints his cabinet.
The whole judicial power is vested in the Supreme Court, and in such inferior courts as High Courts, District Courts, Family Courts and Summary Courts. The Judges of the Supreme Court are appointed by the Cabinet.
