Recent history:
Current President gained control in civil war 1891. Chile won war against Peru and Bolivia, the War of the Pacific (1879-83). In this Chile occupied Lima, the Peruvian capital and received the Pacific coastal region of Bolivia, Litoral, and an area of southern Peru, Tarapaca, in the peace treaty.
Geography:
2500 miles long and between 100 and 185 miles wide. Andes mountain range on eastern border. Central valley around Santiago is very fertile. Few north-south roads; easier to travel by ship along coastline.
Politics:
Poor relations with Bolivia and Peru after War of the Pacific
Good relations with Great Britain due to business interests
