yet another Mafia RP (OOC sign up)

Yes, I am proposing another Mafia RP, but I want to make this truly better than all the other Mafia RPs that have graced II. For starters, it is going to be much more sophisticated than all of the others. (Note: If you don't want to read my rant, continue down, and I have a bulleted list of how this RP will be conducted) I will be controlling the government, or at least the political machine that rules the city, as well as the police and municipal characters. I will also be controlling the newspapers. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe it was Mario Puzo (creator of the Godfather series) who said that government is nothing but a deeply entrenched, well-connected Mafia that runs the best rackets around, with the best protection of all time. The government, the police, the unions, the church etc. will all be corruptable to a degree.

The other thing that I feel has gone astray in other RPs is realism. If you go through the streets slaughtering random people, you will attract media attention, lose support of the cops you paid off etc. Even if the entire police department is in your pocket, the newspapers will have something to say about it, as well as the average ordinary citizen. Power is only conferred upon leaders when the ordinary citizens surrender their freedoms to said leaders. If they do not like their leaders, the leaders will have bad things happen to them.

Keeping in the vein of Realism, most mafias in other RPs seem to have rather unrealistic goals. The objectives I feel that are most plausible, and therefore the politicians I control would be most likely to aid a player in, are, say, absolute control of a district in a city, monopoly on a certain business, or perhaps simply earning vast wealth and legitimizing the family. One thing that will not be welcome are massive corporations or soft-money families with desires to subjugate the city. These mafias are to be made of poor and uneducated people, most likely immigrants. Since this is how they start, they will not have vehicles, weapons and heavy equipment at their disposal.

One last thing I would like to try is a non-static time frame. The first reported Mafia activity in the U.S.A. (According to Jerry Capeci, author of The Idiots' Guide to the Mafia) was in New Orleans in the 1890's, when two families beat the crap out of each other for exclusive rights to unload ships. I figure this RP would begin slightly later than that, say 19-teens, and eventually the prohibition would be enacted, and later repealed, later gambling would be attacked, drugs would appear on the market, etc. The legalization or prohibition of all of these items are not set in stone and can be influenced by different mafia's interactions with politicians.

IF YOU DID NOT WANT TO READ MY RANT, HERE ARE THE BASIC CONCEPTS FOR THIS RP:

-I control the political machine, the police, the press, the church and the unions (Unions can be dominated by other mafias later). Some of these organizations will have no reservations about interacting with crime families. Others will require persuasion. All can be controlled to an extent.

-More realism will be enforced. Killing twenty people on the streets will result in more public awareness of criminal activities, increased suspicion etc., but constructing a children's hospital will have the opposite effect.

-All players will start as relatively poor. Blunt instruments will be, initially, more common than firearms. Cars will be extremely rare.

-Political trends will emerge. (Prohibition, reactions against gambling, drug criminalization) Players who gain political influence will be able to help determine how the government reacts to these.

-I require that all posts have provide rich detail. All major characters should be believable, and should exhibit human strengths and weaknesses. Since so much detail is required, I imagine there will only be 1-2 posts from every player every day.

All are welcome, and I am open to suggestions. I will post my characters soon.

I might be interested. Of course, as I seem to have proved the theory of abiogenesis, my time to post on it would be limited...

Interest is all that matters. Not really, but it does help my fragile self-esteem.:)

I would like to do this (note I intended to be active in the Paradise City one but was forced off line for a week and was by then more or less butt-f***ed)
Anyway, I was thinking of runnig a Jewish immigrant gang focused first around theft and gambling and moving into bootlegging. Like the Purple gang of Detroit. I'll post the info on each charector later.

Government characters (more will be added later)

Mayor: Stanton Ambrose Euewell

Stanton traces his family's lineage back to the Mayflower. He is very proud of his family history, which in its previous generation invested heavily in railroad construction, which exploded and elevated his family into the class as the Rockefeller and Carnegie families.

He was educated at Dartmouth, served in the Navy, attaining the rank of captain before leaving. He retired and forayed into politics. His deep pockets allowed him to buy the support of those high up in Hamilton (better city name, anyone?), and created laid the foundation for a political machine that kept him and his cronies in power for over a decade now. His policies have been those of a "lassiez-faire" system.

His tax reductions and investment in infrastructure allowed for an industrial explosion, however, the emerging unions and labor riots widened the social ga between those who work the factories and those who own the factories. Corruption is slowly beginning to infect Euewell's political machine. Usually, this would be dealt with immediately, however, Euewell simply blamed the "Papists, communists, Jews and atheists" for almost every ill that has beset the city as of late.

Will post the rest when I am not so tired...
