The 1850's was a period of great change, the Crimean War, the big 'wake up call' to Europe that war had to change, has not yet happened, but with rifles, breechloaders, steamships and many other technologies well on the way, the big shift is inevitable.
So, join up now and get the good nations while they last. But please, if you are unfamiliar with the period, do a bit of research on the nation you pick.

I hate to nitpick, but the proper Latin for "I came, I saw, I conquered" is Veni, Vidi, Vici not vedi.

As to proper Latin...meh. Its kind of a running joke at this point, since the forum was originally a Rome-based RP...its kinda hard to explain.

Somebody there seems to be Sardinia [Claims to be Italy, but Italy does not yet exist, so I just assume it means Sardinia] can I play as Naples/Sicily?

Italy was unified due to a rather nasty plauge and some very good RPing on the players part. Normally I dont allow sweeping unifications, but he wrote some excellent posts that are well worth reading.

Anyway, if youre intersted, there are a number of other states. I beleive that Venice is currently in dispute by Austria and Italy, you could play as that state (since I suppose its semi-independant until a claim is solidified) and play those two against each other.

I just forgot about Siam, but at the time the UK was inactive.
AS to the US, he never posted after he claimed. India is a British colony, it technically doesnt appear on the claims list anyway since Im trying to DISCOURAGE people from taking colonies right now. Once we will some other important slots (Sweden, as you say, and the US, maybe a South American nation, and perhaps Persia) then we can open up colonies.

The world has not changed all that much from RL 1850 save for:

Europe
Italy is now united and looks to be having a "discussion" with Austria about Venice and Milan.
The Russians successfully bullied the Turks out of Europe and Thrace.
Well folks, the Crimean War is starting up. It looks to be a long and ugly affair. After the death of Nicholas due to the pressures of a growing Anglo-Russian Conflict, the Balkan Principalities have been granted independence and have a Romanov sitting on their thrones.

Asia.
British India has annexed western Siam, while France has declared a Protectorate over Eastern Siam.
France bought Palwan island from Spain
USA bought Cuba from Spain
USA "bought" Gasden Purchase and is in the process of buying Alaska.
USA and China have come to an "understanding" about SE ASIA... essentially everything south of Tonkin/red river basin is an unofficial US protectorate. Everything North of Hanoi is now directly adminstered from Nanjing.
Tiaping were crushed before they sacked Nanjing.

N. America
Siamese have began departing their occupied homelands. US settles them on westcoast.
Mexican Baja Railroad attracts Chinese migrants
USA and Mexico invades Central America...

That is about it.


Onward to 1854!!!

The Balkans are now 'free' of Russian rule, although still heavily influenced by it. Those states are now open for play.

Historical Update: 1853-1854

Europe:
- The Crimean War has escalated into a full-blown continental conflict with Prussia and Bavaria entering into the Russian Pact in response to the belligerence of France.
- The Kingdom of Denmark, upon mobilizing its fleet, closes the Baltic straits to Anglo-French shipping.
- Austrian Soldiers under Count Radeztky's Army of Italy enter occupied Venetia, while a detachment of the Levant Fleet captures Venice.
- In Greece, the German King Otto has been ousted from his throne and replaced by Alexander Paleologus, a decendant of the Byzantine Royal House. King Otto, placed under house arrest, faces possible execution as Bavarian authorities, to whom Otto is associated, attempt to buy his way to freedom.

Americas:
- The United States agrees to purchase Greenland from Denmark for 15 million American Dollars
- A large Slave rebellion, fueled by the assassination of John Brown and Frederick Douglass in Atlanta, engulfs the southern United States. Upon the breakdown of Congress due to internal tensions and the destruction of the Supreme Court by anarchists, President Pierce is granted emergency powers by the remaining legislature. At once, the entire US Army, under the command of Vice President Winfield Scott, is mobilized and prepared to crush the rebellion.
- French, Mexican and Spanish vessels prepare to take the Danish West Indies.
- The United States agrees to purchase Alaska from the Empire of Russia for a sum of 20 Million American Dollars*
- Mexico successfully assimilates Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica into its Empire with limited American assistance.

Asia:
- Sepoy Rebellion grows in India as Russian raids and support from the Northern border push southwards.
- China begins to invest in an ocean-going fleet with the intention of claiming valuble possessions of the Pacific.

Its hardly a 'Crimean War', considering that no action has taken place in the Black Sea.

Presently there is a possible opening as the United Kingdom, although I need to talk to somebody before it can be confirmed.

AND, where in the world would I find any population stats, military stats or the like?

Theyre mostly independant kingdoms now, Russia just has strong influence over them and they have Romanov rulers.
You could play one if you liked, but I would be obligated to stop you from unifying them ICly...and I dont think Greece or Austria would apprecaite it either ;)
Anyway, theres presently the above-mentioned Confused War going on and I wouldnt mind somebody to RP one of those states.

Ok, signed up as Afghanistan. Couple problems that are REALLY pissin me off:
1. I signed up...and can't post. I can't even see the f*ckin boards!
2. I'm in limbo waiting for validation. Do you confirm me, or does an email get sent?
3. Cause I pressed the "resend validation email" button several times and still nothing!

Well, peace has broken out between Russia and...everybody.
the Anglo-Alliance still wages a war on Prussia though, with heavy lossess on the German side, the war is still undecided though, Prussia was only just beaten in its first battle with the Frech, and although Bavaria is limping with the loss of most of its army, who knows what may happen in the next battle?

Only the Shadow knows!
