Beating and whirring steadily, Denel TVL88 slowly brought itself to a stop a little less than three hundred feet in the air in almost complete silence. It was the kind of ride that President Alejandro had taken dozens of times before but the silence that seemed to surround the still helicopter never ceased to amaze him, and remind him how different things were from his teenage years, and just how old he was. Unstraping himself from his seat, Alejandro reached for the handle and gave it a sharp tug, flexing his aging but strong arm muscles until the door shot back revealing the open countryside below, something that was rare in Haven, and getting rarer everyday. Land was now a commodity that put gold and oil, prices so high it was almost impossible for someone to get their hands on it, which made exercises like this so much more special.

“Sir, the exercise should be starting in just a few more minutes.” A well shaved young man with a headset and cap on leaned back to pass the good news to the President and the other passengers in the cabin. That got Alejandros’ attention for a second, enough to make him look away from the soft countryside below to respond, “Good, I suspect I’ll be happy with what I see.”

“Mr. President I have a surprise for you today, you will be very happy with what you see today.” A broad shouldered, thick man with a large array of colors covering most of his chest on his military uniform confidently proclaimed. “I don’t think there is much left out there that can surprise us General Noe.” Marcos didn’t get a chance to continue before the sound of hundreds of engines revving up easily penetrated through the air up to the Denel they were riding. A full armored divisions worth of armored vehicles began moving out, tearing up the soft soil as they went. Dozens of tanks formed up beautifully in formation, platoon by platoon. It was almost a guarantee that it wouldn’t look like this when the real thing went down, but this was the best they could do, for now. Halting suddenly in place, one of the squat, ugly looking Badger HMBT’s quickly traversed its turret. The long barreled 155mm gun exploded out, the force somehow managing to pick up the nearly 100 ton tank and force it back, even if just an inch. The heavy “shell” completed its trek a second later, the penetrator easily ripping into an obsolescent KAF-90 tank. The KAF-90 quickly brewed up, flames spurting out of an open hatch.

That got Alejandro and Marcos both to jump. “Live ammo?” “Yes sir, there going to be using it in a few days, might as well let them use it now.” The grin on Alejandro’s face showed Noe it had been a good idea.

The retired KAF-90’s amongst other vehicles were remote controlled and comprised the enemy force. They soon showed that they to could bite back and flames spurted from their own turrets, except no rounds came out to the badgers, just tiny laser beams that set a host of lights off ad turned the vehicles into a Christmas show. The exercise continued for another two hours but Alejandro had seen enough and waved to the pilot to take them away. Quickly, a squadron of F-133 Valkyrie fighters took the Denel’s side and escorted her to the airbase.

Once they touched down, Alejandro jumped out, refusing the help of an air force sergeant. He straightened his shirt and slowly walked down the carpet provided him, making sure to smile and shake hands with as many people as he could along the way for the dozens of camera’s and lights on him. Without knowing it, the media in all its nosiness, was helping the state out, Haven wanted the world to know about the exercises, of which the part Alejandro had seen today was just a fraction of the exercises that had gone on throughout the country that past week involving all arms of the military. The media had known about the exercises months before hand and were freely invited to attach themselves to various units during the exercises. What know bow was guessing, in the media at least, was that the exercises had an alterior motive, they were a mobilization. Much of Havens standing military had mobilized and participated in the exercises that were country wide, from the air force to the navy, these men and women were already out in the field, with adrenaline pumping, or in the case of the 3rd, 6th and 8th fleets, out to sea. What made it harder to figure out was the fact that the majority of the military did not participate in the exercises or even mobilize for them, but continued on as if nothing was happening. It had take a lot of work, but Alejandro had gotten Haven in a position to reach its potential, and he promised himself, and privately, his people and country that he would see to it that that potential was reached. The problem that had plagued Haven for so long would be rectified. Looking back at the airfield right before he reached the door, he watched as aircraft with full load outs took to the skies and others came back down. “Daemon Revelat Ipsum.” Marcos looked away from waving to the media and up at Alejandro, his smile wiped from his face, “Ya, a Demon is rising.” Smiling once again, they entered the makeshift conference room together and put on another show for the media and its audience. In a few days Haven would touch off its first act on the world stage.
