Timeline of Recent Events
2006: Hugo Chavez is reelected for another six-year term with 64% of the vote. Turnout ratings are at record lows with only about 25% of eligible voters voting. Some domestic watch groups question the legitimacy of these elections, but they are largely ignored.
2006: After a bill passed in the leglislature endorsed by Chavez the oil industry comes under even more government control.
2007: Two Year War begins and Venezuela exports more of its oil to the US since Saudi Arabia cannot supply as much because of the war.
2008: The leglislative elections are a considered a joke in Venezuela because of Chavez's control over them so voter turnout is at 15%. Chavez's party, The Fifth Republic Movement(MVR) wins 90% of the seats in the leglislature with its allies controlling the other 10%. Most other political parties boycott the vote.
2008: Venezuela's first satellite, Simon Bolivar, is launched marking the beginning of Venezuela's space program. Several satellites are launched later that year.
2009: Drug Trafficking increases with drugs going from Columbia through Venezuela to the MS-13 gang in the US.
2010: In another round of leglislative elections the voter turnout climbs to 30% while the MVR and its allies lose ground, controlling only 85% of the seats. A coalition between the Justice First Party and the Civil Resistance Party control the other 15% of the leglislature. The Democratic Action Party failed to gain any seats because supporters though it was boycotting the election again.
2011: After the US hits Pakistan with the largest nuclear payload ever, Chavez tells the US that he might be forced to stop oil shipments if this continues, though this doesn't happen mainly because the Venezuelan economy would crash. Anti-US sentiment reaches an all time high in Venezuela.
2011: A constitutional amendment is passed so that Chavez can run for president for more than just 2 terms. There is widespread opposition throughout the country and many riots. Chavez's approval rating drop.
2011-2012: Suicide rates climb in Venezuela since there is no sunlight for a whole year.
2012: Amazingly, Chavez wins the presidency again with 54% of the vote, though the election is considered by everyone to be faked since before the election an independent group had put Chavez's approval ratings at 30%. In the leglislature, the MVR's coalition drops to 48% of the seats, the Justice First and Civil Resistance coalition gets 40% of the seats and the Democratic Action Party gains 12%. So for the first time in 12 years the MVR cannot pass a bill alone.
2013: After the oil market crashes on Black Monday, the Venezuelan economy, closely tied to the US economy, goes spiraling downward.
2013: Riots break out and there are calls for Chavez's resignation, but El Presidente declares martial law. There are rumors of a coup and bloodshed is widespread.
2013: A coup backed by every political party except for MVR overthrows Chavez. Upon hearing of this celebrations break out in most cities.
2013: A special election is called for to bring in a new president. Civil Resistance's candidate: Raul Gallegos wins with 51% of the vote. His main goals are to limit the government and open up the economy towards the free-market. He also tells people that he will find other industries to fuel the economy other than oil.
2014: The economy begins to return to normal conditions yet with less dependence on the exportation of oil.
2014: In another round of legislative elections Civil Resistance gets 39% of the vote(65 seats), Justice First 32%(54 seats), Democratic Action 15%(25 seats) and Movement Towards Socialism(MAS) 14%(23 seats).
